The Digest – Gameweek 26

We cast an analytical eye over last weekend’s fixtures this afternoon, evaluating the evolution of City’s fleet-footed No. 10, Liverpool’s defensive fortitude on their travels and the blank Gameweek headache.

The Player

David Silva’s brace in Manchester City’s 5-0 humbling of Newcastle city underlined his heightened goal threat this season. This is the first campaign in the Spanish playmaker’s Premier League career that he’s notched more goals (nine) than assists (seven); it’s also already his most profitable season in front of goal, eclipsing the seven strikes he accrued last term.

Among the highest scoring midfielders in the league this season, the former Valencia star’s nine-goal haul puts him on par with Christian Eriksen and Eden Hazard, and three shy of Alexis Sanchez’s 12 – although, it’s worth noting that Silva has clocked at least 330 fewer minutes than each of these competitors.

In light of Yaya Toure’s return from the African Cup of Nations, many Fantasy managers would have earmarked the Ivorian as the premier route into the Champions midfield – a fair deduction given his streak of six goals in eight appearances before international duty beckoned. However, Toure’s inferior tally of goals (seven) and assists (one) in near-identical minutes to Silva, and weightier price tag (10.7 to 9.4) has thrown up an interesting contest between the pair.

Certainly, pinpointing coverage for Manuel Pellegrini’s side has been afforded greater importance by the absence of numerous high-ownership players next Gameweek. With Chelsea and Tottenham’s blank forcing many managers to bench their big-hitters and field less illustrious back-ups, it’s no surprise to see that Silva has been granted an upsurge in new owners – over 31,000 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers have already drafted him in since his 17-point haul against Newcastle, far more than any other player so far.

For now, Silva sits eighth among his midfield counterparts in the Fantasy ownership stakes, having been selected by 19% of managers but one look at the fixtures suggests that could be set to rise further. Although City’s next match-up – a trip to Anfield to face a resolute Liverpool defence – is potentially tricky, the following four fixtures (LEI, bur, WBA, cry) could see Silva wreak havoc as the champions chase down Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea at the top of the table.

The Team

After shipping 16 goals in their first eight away league matches, Liverpool have now recorded five clean sheets on the road for the first time in 30 years. The Merseysiders are unbeaten in ten and have accumulated 23 points out of a possible 27 in their previous nine fixtures as Brendan Rodgers’ side make a belated claim for a top four finish.

This feat is made all the more impressive when you consider that Rodgers has fielded the likes of Lazar Markovic and Jordon Ibe as wing-backs in a 3-4-2-1 formation, balancing the conflicting requirements of width and defensive cover. Liverpool will do well to maintain their newfound defensive resilience as they embark on a run of fixtures (MCI, BUR, swa, MUN, ars) that includes three of the Premier League’s current top four, though with Martin Skrtel in imperious form and Emre Can’s addition proving crucial at the back, there seems little doubt they can prevail. Frustratingly, Rodgers’ decision to bench Alberto Moreno at St Mary’s has lessened his appeal, though, and with Can classified as a midfielder, Skrtel looks the safest option here.

The Reds have been impressive going forward, too, netting five in their last two outings, but Daniel Sturridge’s restoration as a viable high-cost forward will have to wait a little longer – the former Chelsea striker wasn’t named in the starting line-up, having featured in their midweek Europa League clash against Benfica.

With attacking returns in two of his last four league appearances, Philippe Coutinho (7.7) edges ever close to relevancy in the mid-priced midfielder bracket, though fellow weekend scorer Raheem Sterling (8.4) has served up returns in five of his last seven now and, as evidenced by their 2-0 win at St Mary’s, the Reds have the form at both ends of the pitch to trump any fixture right now.

The Talking Point

One look at the ownership levels in the FPL game highlights the issues caused by Gameweek 27 blanks for the likes of Chelsea, Tottenham and QPR. Two of the top four defenders (Branislav Ivanovic and John Terry), three of the top six midfielders (Eden Hazard, Cesc Fabregas and Christian Eriksen) and three of the top five forwards (Harry Kane, Diego Costa and Charlie Austin) are all affected, handing Fantasy managers a real weekend headache.

Heading into a double Gameweek 28, Spurs’ involvement in crucial domestic and European cup ties leaves us with rotation doubts. Allied to this, the north Londoners face two relatively kind fixtures in their double, so you’d expect boss Mauricio Pochettino to possibly rest a select few during the league ties. Whilst Kane’s 12 goals in 11 outings makes him virtually undroppable, Pochettino’s decision to bench Eriksen against the Hammers yesterday clearly backfired and will surely persuade his manager to start with the Dane as the north London club attempt to get their bid for a top four finish back on track.

With regards to Chelsea coverage, few will want to cash in on the FPL’s leading defender (Ivanovic) or midfielder (Hazard), though Costa may be deemed dispensable as more look to the in-form Aguero as an alternative, with the Argentine finding his stride again.

With our benches set to be fully tested, our struggle to field 11 active players has been further compounded by the declining favour of budget defenders like Patrick van Aanholt and Andre Wisdom, with the latter still sitting third (20.3%) among defender ownership rankings. Balancing our squads and keeping points hits to a minimum looks a tricky task, then, and navigating the options to ensure we take advantage of the next two Gameweeks could well prove critical to many a mini-league success.

Just doing a spot of reading up on Thorgan Hazard after the news of his transfer....and noticed that Kylian Hazard has now made his debut for Zulte Waregem as well...It's like a production line that family.

Don't forget Ethan and Mumma Hazard... 😀

'“There are four brothers. There's me, Eden Hazard, 23. After is Thorgan, who is 21. Then it's Kylian who is 19 and Ethan who is 11. They all play football. Who is the best? My mum! She was a player. Everybody plays football in our home.”

She played in the Belgian Women’s First Division before quitting when becoming pregnant with Eden and interestingly he did not say his dad Thierry, who played with La Louviere in the Belgian second division, was the best.'

    This week:

    Jones&Sig > Ivanovic&Ameobi for -4 thus fielding:

    Krul
    Jones-Wollscheid-Fonte-Bellerin
    Sig-Silva-Sanchez(C)-Blind
    Aguero-Sturridge

    Then for the following GW:
Blind and PVA/Bellerin/Jones out for Bentaleb&Spurs defender, also, for -4, fielding for example:

    Pants
    Spurs defender-Fonte-Wollscheid
    Hazard-Sanchez-Silva-Bentaleb
    Aguero-Sturridge-Kane(C)

Any thoughts GREATLY appreciated, with PVA, Bellerin and Ameobi all doubts to start and Ivanovic, Hazard and Kane obviously out I will likely only be able to field 8 players. Don't see the value in taking -4 to exchange Ameobi and PVA for similarly priced alternatives, really don't want to loose Ivanovic but could get him in later, especially for the double GW. Completely lost so any advice would be very well recieved!

Right I need advice guys, I'm 60 points behind the leader in my ml. This is my team.

    Forster Hamer
    Terry clyne bellerin Dawson Bruce
    Sanchez yaya sterling hazard Ameobi
    Aguero giroud Kane

As u can see, I have made a conscious effort to make my team value high. If not for the extra transfers id probably be top. However now is my time to shine! I have loads more money in my team than the guy above me. The question is how do I use it most wisely? I like my forwards and keeper, but not sure about my defense and midfield. Do I

    A) stick with wot I have
    B) switch yaya to silva and use the additional money on other transfers such as ivanovic for terry
    C) something else?

Problem is he has silva and I worry ivanovic will be the one gaining me extra points not silva

haha same thing here (the being behind the ml leader and having a high tv)

who do you sell for eriksen of that midfield?

and you should do something else than him I feel. I'm considering siggy. good fixtures and stats look good too.

you think ivan is worth the transfer and the extra money? he has terry?

I'm switching sterling for Erikson next week, I might switch back the week after!
He has terry so it would be a good way for me to go! I have a much better team but he's a jammy sod! I can't afford siggy as 5th midfielder and if I make him my 4th that means he will replace Erikson/sterling.

          I looked at yaya -> siggy 😀

what about a punt on nasri if you want a city mid?

if you have 2ft and nothing else to sort I'd go for the sterling to siggy for one week I think. But sterling is also nice 🙂 It depends a lot on your ml leader's team...
Mane is no option for me, because of that, sadly...

Im looking at bringing him in GW28. If he drops by 0.1 then that allows me to pick Dawson over Naughton and Bruce over a 3.8 non player for my 4/5th defenders lol.

That's why Im hoping he does drop. As I need to ship Wisdom tonight.

I figure most people will find a way to leave him on the bench considering everyone's picking him up as soon as the DGW starts

According to FPL Stats he needs only approx 15,120 more transfers out.

Guess work yes, but that isn't many.

    Evening Chaps,

First year playing fantasy football and am at a loss what to do this week!

    1.0 in the bank, 2FT
    Heaton (Foster)
    Hutton Clyne PVA* wisdom* (Terry)
    Johnson Boyd Sanchez(c) Cazorla (Hazard)
    Aguero Defoe (Kane)

Think Wisdom may drop tonight so will probably do a straight swap for Dawson leaving 1FT.
Was planning on doing Cazorla to Eriksen and Defoe to Austin next week.

    Do I:
    A) use the other FT to remove PvA and have 11 playing this week but if so, take a -4 hit next week or sack of Austin for dgw
    B) save and use both next week for eriksen and Austin
    C) something quite ingenious I haven't considered

One last thing - what do you all think about bringing in a spurs def for the dgw and is it worth a 4pt hit?
Was thinking of getting lloris for heaton but ended up short by .1 even if I brought in Haidara not Dawson.

whom would you bring in for pva?

      I prefer your initial plan.

and I decided half that tot defence is not necessary for the dgw. esp. not for a 4pt hit.

        Cheers for the quick reply.

The one transfer I'm tempted with would be Toby in for PvA for 4pts (hit next week) if Koeman said something fairly reassuring about him being for.

        Thanks for the advice!

would be a good transfer. yea agree, wisdom out and wait for pva/toby news.

but everything else, e.g. haidara, bruce etc is not worth it I think...

I have a similar situation to this and there is another option I am considering... swapping Terry out for a Soton defender (Bertrand or Toby?).

You can bench PvA for the blank GW instead, and get Austin & Eriksen in for the DGW.

You'd gain extra money to bring in Lloris for the DGW OR you could swap PvA for Rose.

Looking at fixtures, chelsea's blank and the Matic situation, I don't think Terry will be outscoring Bertrand by much in the next few weeks if at all.

good arguments. che will have a dgw though.

but even so matic out is a blow and considering schneiderlin/wanyama and bertrand back for sou is even more encouraging.
my worry with bertrand is though if elia plays on the left side, he might not get forward as much as before... what do you think about that?

I'm not sure about tot def for dgw...

Hm this does sound interesting. I got terry for 6.6 so if I wanted him later there's very little if any loss on value.
I had similar thoughts however was more thinking as a ft when Toby is back playing, terry -> Toby (gwk 29 or something), however agreed that without Matic, Chelsea will be sketchy to say the least at the back.

Anything worth taking a hit for here? Most of my main rivals are screwed it seems so I might be able to finally gain some ground. I do have some obvious issues though.

    Heaton
    Aldy, Bellerin, PvA, McShane
    Sanchez, Mane, Downing, Puncheon
    Aguero (c), Defoe
