Monitor – Jason Puncheon

Having delivered 131 points in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game last time around, hopes were high for Jason Puncheon’s prospects as the new season got underway. The Palace winger quickly found his form and served up a goal and three assists in the opening six matches under Neil Warnock to suggest he could be worthy of our attentions once again.

As the Eagles started to struggle, Puncheon fell completely off our radars on the back of 14 successive blanks which saw his price slip down to 5.5 by the time Alan Pardew rolled up in Gameweek 21. Under the new manager, it’s been a different story altogether – two goals, four assists and eight bonus points has earned him 46 points in eight appearances, compared to 47 points in the first 20 rounds of matches.

With Palace poised to host QPR, West Brom and Hull in the next six, in addition to travelling to Stoke and Sunderland, expectations are building for Puncheon to maintain his recent momentum over the final three months of the campaign. We cast an eye over his displays across both periods and assess his contribution against other midfielders to ascertain his impact since Pardew took the Selhurst Park helm.

@zasa re: Sturridge - I really can't say. I was really looking at bringing him in a couple weeks ago and honestly how good they looked against City without him made me more pessimistic on bringing him in. If they were still struggling for goals like they had done for that long time period when he was out then I think BR would start him every game as a way out of that period. But they've looked really good without him on the pitch so I think as you mentioned BR will continue to micromanage his minutes. He had such a ridiculously long layoff and no preseason etc. that BR can afford to give him breaks. Although he scored against Burnley, he looked like complete crap against Besiktas and was rusty as he could possibly be. He might be coming out of it right now, but it's risky. I would probably hold on to him though if I were you instead of looking to shift him out. He is still a great differential and always capable of a brace whenever he starts.

As a Liverpool fan my opinion is that Sturridge isn't worth it.
      Austin/Kane/N'Doye are around 5M less!
Coutinho is the one to take a punt on.
For now I'd leave LFC players until the next three games are over.

Yeah I mean the price is also looking like such a ridiculous prohibitive thing. He's not even 10m but 11m and change. Again, wouldn't look to bring him in right now but if I already owned him I'd probably hold steady and look to downgrade in a double move at a later date.

I'm very happy with my attack:

          Eriksen Sanchez Hazard Silva
          Austin Kane Aguero

Some may not be a fan of Austin but I rate him as a player.
Allows me to strengthen my defense too.

Yeah, Moses to Silva my new likeliest transfer will give me that same attack. I also have really come back around on Austin after digging a little deeper into his stats. QPR have also looked a whole lot better on the road under Ramsey than they did under Arry. His price is too good to be true, and although he may not be the most fashionable can't argue with his returns.

And if it goes wrong there are plenty in that bracket you can get instead. Sakho, N'Doye, etc.

Giroud's form is worrying me but I have a feeling he'll get rested one of these games. Especially since Theo isn't getting gametime.

Tough part is organizing my defence. Someone always gets injured or dropped!

😯 That all seems reasonable Walsh, solid insight. Thanks for clarifying the dilemma up 😀

I think I can only hope for the best with him, I just think BR needs him more than ever now and is the final piece to the top 4 puzzle and this incredible run they're on. His appeal to me, like you said, is his ability to bag a brace with ease and Pool's fluid attack is more than capable supplying Sturridge for that. He also gives me a great captaincy differential and worst case scenario, I get rid in the DGW with my WC.

But aye, wouldn't be looking to get rid of him as it makes it nearly impossible to have all of, Sanchez, Hazard, Silva, Ivan and Aguero in the same team. That's my only problem, the only player who can really harm me right now is Silva, hoping he starts getting marginalized when Bony and Aguero start ticking.

Thanks for the much needed advice, as always Walsh, top lad!

Cazorla would be my priority to go in that attack. And Vert should probably go soon too in defense. I like your team overall though. Vert to Ivan would be my transfer most likely and think that is better than saving it. I'd also bench one of the Soton boys as I expect PvA to come back in for their game against Villa. I'd also bench Cazorla and start Puncheon this gameweek.

Bit slow on here so would appreciate some advice on this team.

    Pant, Mannone
    Cawson, Lescott, Rose, Kosc, PVA
    JWP, Phillips, Walcott, Sanchez, Hazard
    Austin, N'doye, Kun
    1 FT, 6.2 itb. and a WC

Walcott, JWP > Silva or Özil seems straightforward.

Nice side, would do Walcott to Silva as others pointed out and hope for the best.
He's no starting and he costs too much for only a 30 minute cameo.

Would then upgrade JWP to a mid priced mid, and after the United game get Kane in ASAP for
      N' Doye

Missed the thread on what I'd like to see changed in FPL.

    1) Remove Jan WC or give 1.5 WCs (0.5 one is max or 3 transfers)
    2) From 1st Feb have a new (c)/(vc) - vc give 50% (rounded down) but cant be on the same line as your C - no 2 mids or 2 strikers.
    3) Active and Inactive league tables - 1 month without a transfer moves you to inactive.
    4) faster price rises and slower drops - to make good players stay more expensive (might help reduce template)
    5) Max rise of 0.4 or 0.5 a week.

    Just some ideas really.

      1) remove captains
      2) add in more scorable attributes (like UFPL but not the full extent, a happy middle ground)
      3) give players who play multiple positions variable pricing depending on where you want to add them
.....for example price Rooney at 10.5m as a midfielder but 9m as a striker

Costa and Ivanovic seem damn near essential to bring in for the DGW. Fitting them in will require most if not all of my FTs til then. Seems a bit dull that all my transfers are basically set in stone. But then again Id rather that than numerous injuries and panicking and hits lol Though if any more teams have DGWs hits may be on the cards 😆

Ivanovic far from essential, but I do think having a Chelsea defender would be a wise move. Although they have two away games they could keep a clean sheet against anyone. Costa though probably should be owned for it.

Currently I have Zouma but hes a rotation risk I dont need for the double. Normally Im inclined to agree on defenders not being essential. (I did say damn near lol) but Ivan has serious potential for a huge score.

true that..loving that I still have my WC available..may use it for the DGW seeing as it's not too difficult to set up for a double AND the rest of the season at the same time when it's GW34..

Not essential by any means, but nice to have nonetheless for the DGW, especially as there isn't much to pick form on that side based on current form. Would have to hope Oscar/Cuadrado get a nice little run before the DGW to spice things up

I asked earlier today what the value of a wildcard is now and the consensus was 20-30 points.

Having now researched a bit further, I think it may be more than that.

I will play my wildcard in GW 34 but it's not all about what I do with it that week. I can plan a smooth progression for my team for the next 5 GWs with no hits and no concerns about fixtures after GW33. I can happily remove players with blanks in GW33 (not that I have many, irrespective of the results this weekend) knowing I can bring them back for the DGW in 34.

In other words it will enable me to maximise points over the next 5 GWs, avoid any hits, have a very strong team in GW 33 despite the blanks and have a great team in 34 as well, together with setting my squad up for GWs 35-38.

Obviously unforeseen injuries could damage my plans a bit but that can happen in any case (and has been doing recently). But I reckon I should be able to get 40-50 points of value from the wildcard when you put all that together.

There is absolutely no way to put an agreed upon figure to answer that question. It is just a big advantage at this point for your planning as you put instead of having to come up with one course of action for a prolonged period of time you can have two shorter term planning periods with the restart button to break them up.

      1. Ruth_NZ
        • 9 Years
        9 years, 2 months ago

Yep. I'm not trying to get agreement to my estimation, just offering my assessment now that I have looked more closely. In the end it will be what it will be.

But I do think the 2 shorter term periods you mention is a big 'invisible' value. You can assess a wildcard by the points you score in the GW when you play it. But actually it can help you both in the weeks beforehand and the weeks after.

Good to know, i feel like i should have used it at the start of the season, but hopefully gw34 will be a big one!

Any regrets at saving it so long?

No, not at all. This is my first FPL season so I will have a measure to assess by next season.

As far as I can see you either take it very early (GW 3 or 4) in which case it helps you build TV and get off to a very good start. Or you take it to coincide with a big DGW late in the season.

Most of the "pros" seem to take the early wildcard route but I don't know whether that's the best strategy or not.

I took it in GW 16 as my team was plagued by injuries and I am so glad I did it then. Was a great move in hindsight and would not change it even if I could.
I got through early GW's really well as my team was set up fantastically from the start.

Yep. I guess an injury crisis would be the other reason to use it. Fortunately I have been able to muddle through injury problems with a few -4 hits here and there.

He could probably get the same result in less than 8 transfers which would cost you 28 pts. I think it's worth closer to 20 pts

      1. Ruth_NZ
        • 9 Years
        9 years, 2 months ago

        8 transfers wouldn't be enough.

Assuming Arsenal and Villa win this weekend I will probably bring in 3 Arsenal, 3 Liverpool, 2 Villa, and 1 QPR as well as 2 new GKs and a refreshed defensive rotation. I doubt I will keep more than 4 or 5 players at most from my GW33 squad.

I suppose if you assess it in terms of hits not needed the value would be around 30 points in that case.

        1. Amateur Pundit Zan
          • 11 Years
          9 years, 2 months ago

If you did not have a WC, would you pay 30 pts to make those transfers?

          1. Ruth_NZ
            • 9 Years
            9 years, 2 months ago

No. I'd never take that much of a hit, I don't even like -4 hits though I take them sometimes. The point is that I can do them for free and that gives me a lot of flexibility both before and after the wildcard.

But as I said earlier, it will be what it will be.

            1. Amateur Pundit Zan
              • 11 Years
              9 years, 2 months ago

I'm not saying it won't give you flexibility.

My point is that a WC is worth how many pts you would pay to make the same transfers, which should be based on the number of points you expect to gain from doing it.

I would struggle to find any set of transfers that I would pay more than 20pts to do and therefore that's my max price of a WC

      I honestly think we'll win..

..when we were playing far worse as a unit months back we still outplayed Chelsea at OT and drew and were unlucky to lose to City at the Etihad (stupid Smalling)

My gut tells me we will rise to the occasion of these tough matches and finish in a CL spot and progress in the FA Cup..

Just please KEEP the 4-3-3, add Carrick as a starter, and keep Rooney up top.

we're boring but we're holding the ball and creating chances..even if they're few in number.

Start Clichy for sure ahead of Dawson IMO, he either plays or doesn't, so low risk of a cameo and this looks like a great fixture for attacking returns as well.
Mane first sub IMO, nice team ILB!

All good options as Downing and Hammers seem to be struggling. Toss a coin.

All 3 good choices, monitor mane this week, he could start playing up front if pelle keeps failing

Quiet in the DZ, would really appreciate some input

    Foster (pants)

    Terry - Clyne - PVA
    Hazard - Moses - eriksen - Sanchez
    Austin - Aguero - giroud

    Cork, Baird , hutton
    2.4 inB
    1 FT

Wildcard in tact to use around GW33-34 for doubles

Thinking Baird > zouma (can get rid on WC)

    Thanks

Baird out definitely. Zouma a good option though he will miss a few which may might you this week with hutton out and PVA rotation. Probably worth it overall if you intend to ditch on WC for the doubles

Arsenal and Liverpool. Don't bother thinking about the others.

Considering 6 teams will have blanks before they get to the DGW that's a bit short-sighted isn't it?

    My defence :

    Terry / Fonte / Dawson / Hutton / Wolly

Should i dump wolly for zouma? Feel like double up on Chelsea game (SOT)

Zooms might just have one more game before rotation.
You could risk it if you don't fancy Costa.

I'm thinking about the same issue. Zouma can be a decent gamble, allowing access or more coverage of a very good defence at a good price, but with a risk of missing games. You will probably need a solid fifth defender if you decide to select him and it depends whether you think Hutton is that defender.

i would push the button if Hutton wasnt suspended

Chelsea vs Soton sounds like a nil nil or one goal game

Template Hazard Sanchez Eriksen Silva I have Yaya in place of Silva which has cost me 30 points in 3 weeks.. do I hold in hope Yaya can get these points back and have a point of different's or cut my loses and join the rest and get Silva?

Tricky. I have Silva and I'm not shifting him but when I looked at his stats a couple of weeks ago they suggested he was over performing. If that's still the case (I haven't looked) he could be due for a slow down. But he's not showing signs of it yet... If he does, Yaya could be a good differential to make up ground, but 34 points isn't a huge gap.

Tricky indeed if Silva gets another brace v Burn 34 could be 50 point gap. I have Giroud to his Ings Ivan to his Terry Eriksen to his Punch the two players that have hurt me is Punch and Silva. Yaya is due and could of scored v Lei. Might keep for one more week. Depending on price change

u have a strong team, but i would go silva (becos silva is taking corners, spot kicks)

u have enough differentials, this is my first season and i learn something, dont have too many differentials in the team, it could hurrtttttt

Cash in the bank too Yaya clearly not worth his 10.7 price tag Silva is going in..watch Yaya score a few v Burn now though...and I will cry!

someone said zouma is probably a starter for all home games

if Chelsea is still in CL, i think zouma will get more game time if Cahill is involved in CL?

The home games thing is a myth.

The CL element may have an influence.
