The ScoutCast – Episode 153 – March

Simon March, aka Dufflinks, has been hanging around these pages since August 2011. A veteran of six Fantasy Premier League seasons, this campaign started more casual than ever, with Simon resigned to snatching the occasional live match from the other side of the world.

Against the odds, by Boxing Day he was fourth in the world. Six weeks ago, he reached the summit. As you read this, Simon sits on top of the FPL world by 30 points with his Wildcard still tucked away in his pocket and the whole Fantasy Football Scout community behind him. No pressure.

With Granville absent with a hangover from a mid-life stag do and another United disappointment, this week’s ScoutCast is dedicated to Simon’s story, as he wakes in the early hours to join Jonty and myself for a special edition.

We overcome countless gremlins to discuss how Simon gets by on rations of four live matches a season, how he can recall every point hit he’s ever taken and how one lucky cat may just hold the secret to his success over the remaining ten Gameweeks.

We end this episode with a shout-out to community legend, Doosra – get well soon Doos.

We’ve included a fully edited version of the ScoutCast on iTunes and via this link or the player below.

If you want to see Simon, myself, Jonty and the lucky cat in person, you can view the full un-edited Hangout movie below. Be warned – it really is a “warts and all” production.

Be sure to subscribe to our YouTube channel if you want to get an alert for next week’s Hangout and future live episodes.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    Terry Kompany Clyne N.Taylor Hutton
    Hazard Cazorla Eriksen Walters Boyd
    Aguero Kane Giroud

    1FT, £1.3m in the bank

Planning to bring in Ivanovic, Sigurdsson and Naughton for Terry, Walters and Kompany next week.

Which is best for this week?:

    A) Eriksen -> Silva
    B) Cazorla -> Silva
    C) Something else?

I also frequently fall more than a week behind in terms of watching Match of the Day which I invariably record so that I don't have to put up with the tedious interviews and analysis between the matches. At times I can be 3 or 4 weeks behind before I manage to binge watch when I have a free evening to myself. Currently in Brighton on work so I've got a few things watched off iPlayer 🙂

As a husband and father I can relate to binge watching two or three MOTDs in a row. Always a fight to save it as it is using precious space on the recorder...

That's a very familiar story. Normally, I'm up early enough on Sunday to catch the repeat but, if I miss that, I'm sometimes struggling to catch up. Definitely do the analysis skip to save precious time.

I haven't watch any live PL this season
The odd UCL game (if I go the ironing)
And get to watch MOTD (recorded) about %75 of the time

I used to average 4 live games a week & highlights (MotD & GoS). Cutdown on live games especially midweek European games this season. Watch Motd & Goals on Sunday (+Sunday supplement)
The nagging wasn't the issue more the fact I usually fell asleep which was a clue to the quality of a lot of the games. Always been a lot of hype but we've hada good run quality wise in BPL & UCL but last couple of seasons I feel there's been a big dip especially in Barclays PL.
Kids won't diminish this, they need to be weaned on it imo. :).

              Having kids? Perhaps.

Watching less football? Not necessarily. My Dad had two kids - he watched every game that came on - granted - back in those days, that wasn't that many but he never missed Jimmy Hill on Saturday and Brian Moore on Sunday.

Other than that i only watch for fpl purposes. so those games is just if we don't do anything else or if i can work while i watch. i've had some succes with fpl earlier and got my minutes on the localtelly and papers. That really helped.. ;-D

I'm a family man - 2 kids aged 6 (boy) and 1.5 (girl) - and nearly always find time or make time for a live game on Sunday. We're more likely to be out as a family on Saturday.

It really surprises me some of the responses to this Hot Topic. My other half is a Liverpool fan so maybe that makes a difference, and my lad is getting into football now loving the likes of Ronaldo and Messi.

I don't think I could play FPL based purely on the Opta stats. I have to get a feel for form and whether a result is deserved or not.

Nah, that's just the English mentality. We're too self conscious and not enough confidence/arrogance so we end up over thinking it and bottling it. Our most 'freely' performing batsman is (was) South African. Says it all.

That's a bit OTT, using stats badly kills teams. But its unfair to say stats are bad for sports because some people can't use them.

If I'm home then three games on Saturday and one or two on Sunday, plus the interesting midweek games. As I often go out on Sat evenings and miss the late game I like to turn my phone off to avoid seeing the result and download and watch the game later on when I'm home, so that's not live but pretty close.

No kids, as you might have guessed by now 🙂

Best of luck if you do try - it's a cliche but it really is life changing in the best way.

Attention span isn't a strong point in the early years - I've a 3 year old daughter and a 5 month old son but I'm holding out hope that football becomes a more attractive proposition for them in the next few years 🙂

That's nice. Most of the time you only get to hear people at work complaining about their loss of sleep and the trouble their kids are up to.

It's easy to complain and sometimes you really do get driven to the edge (sleep deprivation is a killer) but when push comes to shove you can't help but love the little buggers 🙂

I'm with you, Greenwindmill. And in some ways FPL complements fatherhood quite well. It's something you can do on your phone when you're stuck under a sleeping baby or singing kids to sleep.

Very true - my previous best FPL season was the year my daughter was born. The extra hours staring at FFS and mulling over transfers whilst trying to look after a newborn unwilling to sleep alone really pay off!

I don't have Sky so only MOTD and the cup games, which means a disproportionate amount of Spurs and Everton this year. I'd been wondering how much of a disadvantage lack of live football is, but Dufflinks comments on the Scoutcast give me hope

Lately have only had time to watch MotD because of my double shifts and off days on Sunday.
Generally try to at least watch whoevers in the top 5 though and if i can spare an extra match, I'll watch a game with someone I want to transfer in, so I'll likely try to squeeze in the Palace and Swansea games to get a feel of how Siggy and Fruitpuncheon are doing.

I am in Australia, so at this time of year I really only watch evening games live as they're at breakfast time for me. Once daylight savings changes over, I watch the 12:45 kick offs, as they're at 9:45pm here. I have three kids under 6 years of age, so most of my watching is the hour-long highlights packages for each round. I spend some time looking over the stats in the members area, as I find this is a good way of picking up some of the info I miss by not watching full games.

2 or 3 on Saturday and 2 on Sunday, usually all PL games as well as Champions League footy, especially now that it's in the knockouts.

I work and I live with my girlfriend but she knows weekend is football time for me and she usually has university work to do so there's no real conflict.

      Have a 7 month newborn.
Like GreenWM said, all those hours trying to help him go to sleep have been spent watching recorded football.

UCL games and 2 or 3 Portuguese League games.

Great question - Been wondering this myself. Also a new father and manage about a match a weekend. Watched A LOT more last year and definitely feel that the more you can watch, the less likely you are to fall into those 'looked good on MOTD' type traps, and avoid a few bandwagons. Also those stat tricksters like Coutinho last year, who look fantastic on paper but in reality don't look like they're going to score in a month of Super Sundays (see what I did there).

I read an interview with the winner of a couple of seasons ago who discussed the importance of both stats and watching (full) games, and I strongly agree. Unless you can watch every game like that fella above!

It's tough in Australia due to the timing, but I get up each weekend to watch newcastle play, regardless of the time (usually 2 am). If there's a good early game on (or I have a fantasy interest), I'll watch the early game prior to that as well (11:45 pm) and if there's a good game afterwards I'll watch that too (4:30 am).

It's a tiring life, made worse when newcastle get thrashed, but i wouldn't have it any other way 😛

Then I travel up to Everton about three times a season

then probably a few random games dotted about

However BBC final score has been a favourite of mine recently. That and SkySports News are by far the fastest way to get football results (without going to the live game).

However ive realised I cant listen FinalScore then stream another live game because finalscore is always 10-30seconds infront of the stream

This is a good hot topic, was thinking about this myself after Simons interview.

I can go weeks without catching a match but will always try and watch United games when they're on. I'll tend to prioritise watching the big games too.

My missus is pretty good about it if I tell her there's a game I want to watch. The kid just has to deal with it 🙂

As a married man with an impending daughter at the end of June, I guess things will change when she arrives. But for now, I catch a game or three each weekend. During the week, the games come on at 10pm here GMT+2 during UK winter... so it is a bit late.

I love football and will watch as much as I can, but also know that priorities always come before a game. I make sure to get all the chores done so the afternoon games on the weekend become an option. It is really all about compromise, getting the most important things done so your family and home are not neglected. And there is also a chance that your kids can enjoy a game as they get a bit older... sweet deal!

I think it's a blessing in disguise from an FPL perspective, but I watch very few live games (normally the Manchester derbies and maybe less than 5 more) and watch highlights when I can.

I say it's a blessing in disguise because I'm not spending time trying to figure out who is looking dangerous and might be the next surprise source of points and instead just look at who is on form.

It seems to be working well as I'm pushing for my first top 1k finish. I used to watch a lot more football and maybe overcomplicated my team selection with more punts.

    One last time:

At a decent rank (15,000) right now. Thinking about punting it on Kane this week. I'm aiming for a four digit or 3 digit rank. Does anyone else agree its worth the punt this week given that Aguero could be protected this week for Barca? Or is it better to wait for other opportunities. I also feel this is the right week as City would most likely be out after next week, so Pelle would use Aguero freely. Probably this is the last week Aguero might be a bit protected. Feel that the time is running away to get into 4 or 3 digits. I've played all safe and popular captain choices till now.

    Cheers.

    Which option? 🙂

    A) Keep FT. If Jones doesn't play Bertrand isn't a bad substitute.

    B) Jones>Zouma. Jones for the long-term is awful. Negatives: takes up a Chelsea DGW spot and isn't nailed on.

    c) Jones>Naughton and Fonte>Ivanovic (-4). Hits are bad but both are good picks until the end of the year.

Personally b followed by d. Not too bothered about Costa 2bh. I feel you want me to say a though.

Nah Costa bores me but it could be hard not owning him in the dgwk!

        I can't do b & D but I could do C & D
