Injuries

The Treatment Table – Gameweek 31

The weekend’s nine fixtures have heralded in a number of new injuries, with yet another hamstring setback for Chelsea’s main striker proving the headline-grabber.

Arsenal
Laurent Koscielny and Aaron Ramsey were both forced off during the Gunners’ win over Liverpool on Saturday lunchtime. After the match, Arsene Wenger revealed he was optimistic on the pair’s fitness:

”Koscielny has a little tightness in his thigh..He had a muscular problem, but a small one..and Ramsey’s is an ankle problem, but it’s not bad.”

Wojciech Szczesny missed out yesterday due to a rib problem.

Aston Villa
Tim Sherwood is pessimistic over the prospects of Ashley Westwood and Scott Sinclair making Villa’s home clash with QPR on Tuesday after the duo missed yesterday’s trip to United with hamstring injuries. Sherwood also rolled out an update on Alan Hutton’s fitness after the defender was forced off at Old Trafford:

”They’re both injured. I wouldn’t have thought they’ll be back for Tuesday. It’s disappointing. The injuries are crippling. But we’ve just got to get on with it. We lost Alan to injury today. As quick as we are getting them back, we are losing them. Alan wanted to stay on the pitch desperately. He was desperate to stay on and do well for the club but unfortunately he couldn’t. His ankle was too sore. It’s going to be a struggle for him. I’ve never known injuries like it. It’s unbelievable.”

The Villains’ boss is a little more optimistic on Aly Cissokho and Kieran Richardson’s prospects of being available to face the R’s:

“I hope so but I’m not holding my breath.”

Chelsea
Diego Costa lasted just 11 minutes as a second-half substitute before his hamstring issues forced him off against Stoke. Discussing the likely period of absence, Jose Mourinho reckons the Spain international is set to miss the Gameweek 33 showdown with United:

“It’s too early. He has to go home, he has to wait 48 hours. He has to do all the scans again. He will be out for sure a couple of weeks, but we have seven weeks until the end of the season. Seven weeks and eight matches. For sure, in half of it he has to be with us.”

Mourinho also conceded that the decision to throw Costa on at the break with the match all-square was a risky tactic but refused to blame the club’s medical department as a result of his star forward’s setback:

“I don’t say a gamble because we did every test, we did every scan. The player trained two days 100 per cent with the team, the medical department was convinced that he was ready. The player was convinced he was ready, not for 90 minutes, but he was ready to play and to help the team. Sometimes as a manager I have to risk things. Medical departments have to do the same, if they want to be top medical departments like our department is. The safe medical department cannot work with me. People with fear, afraid to risk, cannot work with me. My medical department is fantastic, they do fantastically well for us. Today between them and the player and myself, things didn’t happen the best way, but I’m happy with that, because it’s football.”

Everton
Darron Gibson is set for a period on the sidelines after sustaining a foot injury in training on Friday morning, Roberto Martinez has confirmed:

“We don’t know yet how long Darron will be out because, obviously, the specialist needs to give us an answer as to how we are going to treat the injury. Yesterday, in a very innocuous action just in the box, he rolled his ankle and didn’t realise anything was wrong. Then, this morning, it was swollen and when we checked it he has a fracture in his metatarsal which is really devastating and our win today is for him. It’s such a tough period, we need to support him and make sure we get him back as quick as we can.”

Hull
Curtis Davis was unavailable for the Tigers’ trip to Swansea due to a thigh problem. Andrew Robertson missed out through injury, whilst Gaston Ramirez lasted less than 30 minutes before being forced off due to injury, according to match reports. The on-loan Uruguayan is unavailable for next weekend regardless as he cannot play against parent club Southampton.

Liverpool
Mario Balotelli missed the trip to Arsenal after sustaining a knee knock in training, Brendan Rodgers has revealed:

”He trained yesterday afternoon with the team and took a slight knock to his knee. He deemed it that he was not able to travel with the team. He felt it was too sore to travel. The medical staff have looked at it. It was something that he himself didn’t feel comfortable with to travel.”

QPR
Eduardo Vargas was forced off through injury just 30 minutes into yesterday’s win at West Brom. Club medics are waiting for swelling to subside before sending the player for scans.

Sunderland
Jack Rodwell missed today’s derby win over Newcastle due to a hamstring injury.

Swansea
Kyle Naughton was forced off with an ankle problem during the Swans’ weekend win over Hull. Naughton was involved in a challenge with David Meyler which resulted in the latter’s dismissal but after the match, Garry Monk refused to blame the Tigers midfielder:

“He’s gone to hospital for an x-ray. His ankle swelled up after coming off. I think it was a 50-50 ball. It was a bad challenge, but I don’t think there was any malice from the player.”

Tottenham
Jan Vertonghen was unavailable for today’s trip to Burnley due to illness, the club has confirmed. Kyle Walker lasted just two minutes of the second-half before limping off with an ankle problem sustained prior to the break. The right-back left the stadium in crutches but Mauricio Pochettino remains optimistic on his prospects:

”We expect and we hope that it’s not a big issue.”

    Thoughts for this week:

    Transfer - Austin to Remy.
    Captain - Kane.

Made a habit of sticking to early thoughts/decisions this season. Saves a lot of stress and deliberation 🙂

Your captain rate seems good to me. You've suggested a few in recent weeks and they have paid off. Austin and Kane in recent weeks, off the top of my head

I've done okay but wouldn't say my picks have been out there or anything.

Kane and Austin in double game weeks were almost a no brainer (although I did for a small spell consider Kane this week).

Then Kane v Leicester was also a no brainer (for me) - although got a bit lucky with the way the goals went in maybe.

If I don't go Remy there's lots of potential candidates including:

        Murray
        Gomis
        Berahino

Berahino would probably stand out with fixtures but I like the idea of Gomis.

Yeah I'd say the Remy wagon will be in full swing by Tuesday night.

Kane and Hazard look like the standout captain options in my team and usually I'll go striker. I've had Hazard since GW1 but rarely captained him - to my own detriment.

Haven't really looked into it but what else would I do? I need the DGW players.

      There is a chance yeah.

      Here's my thinking on it:

I don't want Austin this week and am looking to get a striker in. If I go Remy he has QPR this week and no blank with a potential DGW.

I can just get him in, keep the money I have in reserve for Costa and if Costa is confirmed fit and ready to start I can just make the transfer which I'd do if I hadn't gone for Remy.

Appears to me Koeman likes Shane Long in the forward role and refuses to embarrass Pelle by benching him. That leaves Mane out on the wing where he has looked useless the last two matches. I love the talent and fixtures - I don't like how he's utilized.

I've got mine but I'm not convinced. It's a WC for 1 week, whereas I always think of a WC as something that sets me up for a few weeks after.

Question to those playing UFPL - how do you find it?

What is good / worse than "normal" FPL?

I really like the thought of subbing in players midweek and changing captaincy. I'll definitely be involved next year, hoping to get in / start some leagues.

I'd consider that won at this point. A big double game week haul from someone random / you don't own could close the gap quite a lot in one week but not enough with that lead for me

If we don't take into account the rest of this game week that's 17 points they have to gain on you every week. Very tough.

We'd like to think so and it should be, but we really don't know whether Mourinho will have a mad moment of nostalgia and feel some sort of swan song coming up for Drogba...well at least for one game maybe.

Uh huh. I see. Or don't. It's really uncertain, I guess, with perhaps yesterday's remy start, and Drogbas elder years, as indicators.

You can't post in the original thread?

In GW30 I captained Costa for 24 points. I had Kane as vice captain.

Had I done it the other way around I'd have scored 5 points more.

Care to explain what your point is? Or is it just to try to make me look deceptive?

Perhaps that was the case. If Kane wasn't a captain option then FPL would be more boring. Plenty captained in the last 2 GWs & it's gone both ways. I've been on the right side of it twice whereas those who haven't have probably received red arrows. Hard to say he's ruining FPL with the attraction he provides now. Player 12 is very important in FPL. Someone like Suarez ruined it more last season.

I wonder if all these WC people have considered not using it for a DGW and just making the best team they can now.

A new team from now could earn far more points in the long run than a one week bonanza

              1 Arsenal, 2 at most.
At present, I've 7 blankers with 3 ft's so it saves me taking ahit. Will plan for all the dgwers - Liverpool & gw37ers.

I him they're worth less win the way the doubles have fallen but could be handy is Liverpool win and get put in with arsenal. I only have Bellerin from those 2 teams currently and only 2 Chelsea for the upcoming double.

Wildcard is still handy, just maybe not as much as they'd have hoped

He's an odd one for sure. Never looks like a good pick and yet this year, just like last year, he sneaks up the rankings with his pts. He's only 1pt behind Cesc now and 2 behind Sterling...

Pffft, Chelsea are conceding goals coming from outside their own half 😉

Realistically it is tricky timing but he's a very creative player, so he can always create something. However, with his old club coming up, possibly Mata will be the one doing the damage.

Just seems no matter what my start is like I don't like my team after a few weeks.

This season was partly because I did little research into defence and was returning from holiday deadline morning. Had my worst ever start and decided to wildcard gw3 to get Aguero.

Next season I'll try and be more patient.

True, hoping I can build on it next year. Certainly got my love back for FPL

No way! Early WC every season, i never seem to pick a good early team

Somebody posted some analysis on the top 1k WC's a couple of seasons ago. It showed a break down of when the WC's were played. It was a really even split between early/late and DGW's..and didn't prove a damned thing one way or the other.

Oh yeah? Interesting. I just can never resist getting on the early wagons as i never seem to pick them 🙁

Is Costa still an option for the DGW?

He's out for a minimum of 2 weeks it seems. However there is 21 days between his injury and his DGW fixture against Arsenal. Should we still plan to bring him in?

I'm tempted to get Remy and hold the money I had planned to use for him anyway until we hear more news

One thing is for sure, the injury has nailed Hazard as everyone's captain.

            The double.

This week he's a good choice but I'll go Kane probably

If Costa is a doubt then most certainly. He has a tendency to come back relatively quickly though (not always a good thing).

Speaking of this weeks captaincy, there are loads of options. Kane, Giroud, Sanchez and Hazard all look like good bets.

Why? he could very well be fit for the DGW

It looked nasty, and more like a tear. He will be very gently eased back in after longer than 3 weeks imo

Is he due to get scans? would like more detail on the severity.

By the time he is fit the title will be won. I don't expect to see him again this season.

      Hail King Remy! 😉

Golden boot not have an impact? Of course if the tests come back looking bad then he may well be done, but otherwise i'd expect him to come straight back into the team when fit

If he's still in with a shout maybe, but I think he will be out of the hunt by the time he gets back.

Ha, I suppose Remy supporters have to rule Costa out 😉
