The Midweek Team News

Laurent Koscielny is rated as doubtful for Arsenal’s home clash with Sunderland due to illness. Liam Bridcutt is ruled out for the Black Cats, though Jack Rodwell returns after a hamstring injury.

In his Tuesday pre-match press conference, Arsene Wenger confirmed that Laurent Koscielny is considered a doubt for tonight’s clash against the Wearsiders due to illness:

“We have an uncertainty about Laurent Koscielny that we will check today.”

The centre-half was then pictured in training later in the day, boosting his chances of making this evening’s match as the Gunners look for the win that would clinch third spot.

Wenger went on to admit that Mathieu Debuchy won’t be back in full training until Friday before conceding that he’s uncertain whether Danny Welbeck or Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain will prove their fitness in time for the upcoming FA Cup final on May 30:

“They are progressing well but they will not be available for Wednesday. I don’t know yet, let’s see how they all recover next week. Danny Welbeck is not available yet, he is not in full training, so I honestly don’t know. They all have to get fit very quickly now because there is not a long way to go [to the final]”.

Sunderland’s problems in central midfield are building ahead of the Emirates clash. Liam Bridcutt, who stood in for the injured Jordi Gomez at home to Leicester on Saturday, has been ruled out, though Jack Rodwell is back in contention after missing out recently with a hamstring problem.

Black Cats boss Dick Advocaat has hinted he may be ready to hand Adam Johnson his first start since the Dutchman’s arrival:

“He’s in the squad and when you are in the squad, there’s always a chance you will start.This team works so hard and you have to be fair to all of them, but Adam is a player who can do something different for us. His style is different from others – you saw that when he came on against Leicester.”

Advocaat also confirmed that Billy Jones has recovered from the knock that forced him off against the Foxes. With his first-choice right-back available, the Dutchman admitted that, although he won’t be parking the box tonight, his players need to be defensively aware:

“I still think we have to think about goal difference. I think we have to try to get a goal there [at Arsenal]. But we can’t give the game away 2-0, let’s put it like that. And certainly not like we did against Crystal Palace. We have to stay clever to the end. Arsenal have too much individual skill to do that (park the bus). But we have to try and make it as hard as possible for them defensively.”

    As it seems to be awards season, who do you think have been this season's overachievers and underachievers?

    For teams I would say.....

    Over = 1) Southampton, 2) Swansea, 3) Chelsea
    Under = 1) Liverpool, 2) QPR, 3) Everton

    And for players (that have been fit).......

    Over = 1) Kane, 2) Clyne, 3) Austin
    Under = 1) Balotelli, 2) Di Maria, 3) Yaya

      Liverpool likely to finish 5th - haven't underachieved.

      From a FPL point of view - Coleman / Baines have underachieved!

        Liverpool finished second last year and scored over 100 goals. They spent a shed load of money this year and are 22 points behind the leaders with one game to go. I predicted them to finish 5th before the season started but it's difficult to argue that that's not under achieving in the context of last season.

          But with the team they had after the transfers were done didn't underachieve.
          They surely underachieved in the transfer window though.

          Point noted, however: if Chelsea, man city, arsenal, Utd are all richer n more expensive squads, and achieve their correct level or higher Liverpool finish 5th. 5th most expensive squad, 5h highest wage bill - Generally they should b 5th bar exceptional circumstances ie Suarez last yr.

          Unless one of others underachieved nigh on impossible for them to get higher than 5th.

          Liverpool fan btw, an honest one

      Agree with a lot of yours. Here's mine.

      Teams

      Over = 1) Swansea, 2) Southampton, 3) Crystal Palace
      Under = 1) Liverpool, 2) Man City, 3) Newcastle

      Players

      Over = 1) Kane, 2) Forster, 3) Terry
      Under = 1) Balotelli, 2) Falcao, 3) Rio Ferdinand

      Can't agree with Chelsea as over as myself and probably most people had them winning the league before the season even started.

      Overs I'd go: Leicester, Swansea, and West Brom.
      Leicester: Never thought they'd stay up. Certainly didn't expect them staying up beginning of April.
      Swans: Already 14pts better than last season.
      West Brom: 17th place last season. Can't finish below 13th this one. If not for goal dif could technically go 10th.
      Not going for Southampton because I thought they'd still do well. The players they picked up were all good, only English pundits who know not of the rest of players quality outside England slagged them down.

      Unders: Newcastle, Everton, Liverpool
      Newcastle: 10th to maybe relegated
      Everton: 5th/72pts to 10th/47pts w/ 1 to play
      Liverpool: 2nd/84pts to 5th/62pts w/ 1 to play

    At the time of writing this it is 5 hours and 40 minutes until we get the Arsenal team sheet.

    Stop worrying yourselves about whether Koscielny or any other Arsenal player will play. Sit back, take a break and think about something else 🙂

      Ospina
      Schlupp Terry Skrtel
      Cazorla Sanchez Silva Henderson
      Aguero Benteke Kane

      Krul Lescott PVA Sinclair

      Thinking of doing either Sinclair -> Mahrez/Albrighton or Kane -> someone!

      As its quite quiet here thoughts on the managers?

      Mourinho - Best in the world
      Pellegrini - Very good manager should not be sacked
      Wenger - Good manager, good squad, few more players and theyre title contenders
      LvG - Disappoimnting in first season considering money spent
      Rodgers - Good manager, not the man for the job if Liverpool want to challenge for the title again. Suarez carried them last year.

        I'm happy enough with LvG. 4th or higher was what we set out for this year, loads of money or not.

        We still don't really know how much the Di Maria purchase was because of him and not just Woodward wanting a marquee signing.

        Blind has been a decent signing, Rojo potentially too (if he stops being injured!). Shaw another that we've been earmarking for a while so not sure how much LvG wanted him.

        Think you have to judge LvG on next year, not this.

          Very fair points. I would have hoped for more in his debut season though.

          I think United have 4th because the others have been bad not that united have been good. In saying that you can only beat whats in front of you.

          Agree, however I think Moyes should have been given that extra year too

          Mourinho will now chase the Champtions League with CFC and if he win this then he goes down as the best ever IMO, also has responsibility to blood youngsters after the last few years success in the youth teams.

          not sure I agree re: Pellegrini. They have gone backwards since he has been in charge and he looks lost tactically in the big games.

          LVG turned it around after a couple of dodgy spells, will build on this now. Next season is the true test for him

          Wenger - too stubborn for his own good, always buys the same sort of player. specialist in failure!

          Rodgers, deluded, tactically inept and poor record in the transfer market. Liverpool should defnitely keep!

        Mou - The best in the league, all time great, Mr miagi.

        Pelle - Overated. Well I used to think so but now probably rated about right. Don't come monday.

        Wenger - Legend. Criminally underrated by arsenal fans. All time great. Does everything in arsenal's best interest. Hope he wins another league.

        Lvg - Meh so far but expect and fear much more to come.

        Rodgers - Has my full support. Needs to make the next signings count. Whoever was responsible for the last lot should be on thin ice. If that was BR so be it.

      No choice but to play a defender with dire chances of a clean sheet (or even playing in C's case):

      A McAuley away to Arsenal
      B PVA away to Chelsea
      C Monreal home to West Brom

      Which one, ya think?
