Captain Sensible – Gameweek 38

For the final time this season, our pre-Gameweek members article, which focuses on the main captaincy contenders, arrives in time to guide the armband thinking. As always, we take a three-part approach which includes the weekly poll standings, the Opta statistics and our Rate My Team projections to help steer your thoughts on the captaincy conundrum.

The Captain Poll

Sergio Aguero leads the way in this week’s Captain Poll, with over 35% of the votes cast. The City striker faces a Southampton side that’s picked up a single point in their last six away matches and has scored in each of his last three at the Etihad, including the 23-point haul against QPR in Gameweek 36. Manuel Pellegrini’s men are looking for a seventh straight win in front of their own supporters and have been in fine scoring form, netting at least twice in their previous six home matches.

Christian Benteke is next in line with almost 18% backing. The Belgian has racked up 11 goals, an assist and 15 bonus points in his last ten ahead of a home clash with Burnley, but with next weekend’s FA Cup final also to consider, there remains a slight fear that Benteke’s minutes could be managed come Sunday.

Alexis Sanchez sits just behind the Belgian in third spot ahead of Arsenal’s home encounter with West Brom. The Chilean’s form is a concern, however – he’s scored in just one of his last six, whilst Arsenal have failed to net in their previous three at the Emirates. Bearing in mind that the Baggies have four clean sheets in five, Sanchez will need to up his form considerably. Like Benteke, there’s also the possible threat of rotation ahead of the Wembley final to factor in.

Eden Hazard takes fourth place for Chelsea’s clash with Sunderland. There’s no doubt that his 6% of votes were accrued prior to the news that that he’s undergone emergency dental surgery – a factor that makes him a serious doubt for Sunday’s encounter. Although he’s scored just once in his last five, three of those matches have been away – Hazard has netted in three of his previous four at the Bridge and, if available, could emerge as an armband differential. The Black Cats defence will be no pushover, however, as they arrive in West London off the back of three successive shut-outs.

Further down our poll listing, Hazard’s team-mate, Diego Costa has emerged as another potential differential. Unlike the Belgian, he looks certain to start against Dick Advocat’s side, although, with Cesc Fabregas and perhaps Hazard missing, there are question marks about Costa’s likely ammunition, as well as his sharpness in front of goal following injury.

Romelu Lukaku is also amongst the chasing pack after producing two goals and an assist in his last three. Only just under 3% are willing to consider him for the armband, though visitors Spurs have been defensively dire on the road and managed just three clean sheets.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

I've gone for Mata. I expect him to start and he's on penalties. I'm a United fan though so perhaps I'm a bit blinded here

They are playing Hull and United will want to make a statement going into next season. No mercy will be shown and they certainly won't be on holiday. In fact they might even fancy themselves to bridge the 7 goal gap with Arsenal and hope for an improbable 3rd place. Might as well try at least.

plus we played well vs Arsenal and drawing was one giant tease. LVG will want to get back that euphoric release to end the season.

not to mention, though Mata is not one of these, there will be a handful of culls from the XI so this could be some players' last chance to save their standing at the club

Yeah and thats what I expect as well. Should be a very positive game because Hull will go for it too.

I fancy the game setup too. Hull need a win, so they have to be attacking. Man Utd will be motivated by the thought of bridging that seven-goal gap. And the Man Utd players will be motivated by a possible player clearout in the summer. It all adds up to suggest a high-scoring game and I expect Mata to be among the points, as well as Rooney. I've seen almost no mention of Herrera in these discussions -- if I had him in my team I'd be pretty happy. I think that Mata is worth captaining and might be a great differential (since I don't expect Aguero will score that well against Southampton. Mata wasn't even a captain option in the poll, nor is he mentioned among the candidates above. Odd!

All the main United assets will be worth a look Herrera included. Will probably depend on peoples budgets but from Young to Rooney the full price spectrum is covered.

Heading into the last day of the season I figured I should update the Dead Team Comp...

Athletico Timbo has taken the lead for the first time this season (talk about timing). Kroos Control, Il Brutto and Mull are hot on his heels trailing by just 6, 7 and 11 respectively.

Check where your team is at on this link... https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1raAyvT8NYalwe4_-1EqJZBOOcbwjmixKpFu18ySKGVQ/edit#gid=1424366027

You can also check the actual teams on the "Teams" tab (you can search for your name), and week-by-week scores and ranks on those respective tabs.

Rambo + Giroud > Mata + Lukaku for free to give me:

    ...............Schmeichel
    .......Terry - Smalling - Morgan
    Albrighton - Mata - Silva - Sanchez
    ......Lukaku - Benteke - Aguero

    Panti; Hendo, Skrtel, PvA

now to just pick a cappo

ML is long since wrapped up, and trying to climb higher in OR. I've managed to save 2 transfers (playing the ESPN game), so now is the time, and cash is no object as I'm moving Hazard out.

M1 - Walcott (already have Sanchez and Ozil)
M2 - Yaya (already have Silva and Aguero)

    F1 - Costa
    F2 - Lukaku
    F3 - Benteke

Please pick 1 midfielder and 1 forward.

AND, if trying to make a final big jump (and don't care about a similar big fall), would you captain any of the names above instead of Aguero???

    Thanks.

leaning toward Lukaku between the two of them, although it partly may just be a moment of psychological stubbornness as I was going to get Benteke weeks ago and opted for Giroud in part to block someone who was chasing me, so it pains me to circle back after suffering through these past weeks. i also wonder how many minutes Benteke will get and feel Lukaku is likely to get more.

Since you probably have other Arsenal coverage, and since I think there is a greater chance that Giroud doesn't start than there is that Kane doesn't start, I think I would get rid of Giroud at this point.

Can't comment on doing it for a hit without knowing what you're doing as that factors into the equation.

tough one. i was all set to go Costa, but have been talking myself out of it and keep going back and forth between him, benteke, and lukaku. i just can't figure out if we can expect the explosion from Costa if he isn't going to have the service of fab & haz. but it's a justifiable gamble.

already have 3 arsenal plays. is Milner/Bolasie/Young worth a -4 for a possibly starting Sterling?

i think it comes down to the "possibly" part. if it's going to be a blank, they i'd take the hit. if he's going to play, it's tough to move him out for a hit. so, what do you think the odds are that Sterling plays given everything that's happened in recent days?

            2. da Beeeez

as for Mirallas, when he's played, he's been plenty solid. his issue has been minutes. but with Lennon out this week, he seems a decent punt.
