Team of the Season – Ryan Bertrand

Having started the 2013/14 campaign at Chelsea, Ryan Bertrand would only make one appearance for the Blues before moving on loan to Aston Villa in the January transfer window. The defender made 16 starts for Paul Lambert’s struggling side, registering only three shut-outs.

Before the beginning of last term, Bertrand would find himself on the move once more, with Southampton signing the left-back on a season-long loan. The Saints had kept 15 clean sheets in the previous campaign, so Bertrand was immediately thrust into the Fantasy limelight, priced at just 5.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) as the season got under way.

Despite losing Luke Shaw, Dejan Lovren and Calum Chambers, Southampton’s defensive unit once again delivered for Fantasy managers under new boss Ronald Koeman, with new recruits Fraser Forster and Toby Alderweireld, along with Bertrand, helping the Saints register 15 shut-outs once again – a total bettered by only Chelsea (17) and West Brom (16).

Southampton conceded 33 goals last term, helping them to the second best defensive record in the league, with champions Chelsea letting in just 32. Bertrand finished the season as the fifth highest scoring defender in FPL with 140 points, considerably more than he had totalled across his four previous years. In January, Southampton made Bertrand’s loan move permanent, with the left-back joining for £10m on a four-and-a-half year deal.

THE STATISTICS

It took little time for Koeman to stamp his mark on the Saints’ new-look backline, with his side keeping three clean sheets in their first five matches, before registering four consecutive shut-outs between Gameweek 8 and 11.

After such a fine start to the season, the Saints struggled to maintain their early resilience, though they did manage eight more shut-outs by the middle of April following a 2-0 win against Hull in Gameweek 32. That was to be their final clean sheet of the season though, with 11 goals conceded in their final six matches.

Bertrand benefitted from the revamped Bonus Points System, which rewarded attacking full-backs more this season, picking up 13 bonus points. That’s less than team-mates Jose Fonte (16) and Nathaniel Clyne (15), although Bertrand did miss two of Southampton’s clean sheets due to a three-match suspension following his red card against Swansea in Gameweek 23. The left-back scored twice and provided three assists last season, highlighting his attacking prowess.

THE PROSPECTS

Bertrand finished the season priced at 5.8 in FPL, having peaked at 5.9 during the final month of the campaign. Given that Fonte started last season valued at 5.5 after Southampton kept 15 clean sheets in 2013/14, we can expect Bertrand to be priced at a minimum of 5.5, with a hike to 6.0 more than possible.

The left-back averaged 4.1 points per appearance, the same as Clyne, with Fonte (3.8) managing slightly less, so it would seem more than likely that all three will find themselves in the same price bracket next time around. That is, of course, if Clyne remains at St Mary’s, with the England international heavily linked with a move away from the south-coast club with just a year left on his contract.

With Toby Alderweireld uncertain to return to Southampton following his season-long loan, Koeman will have to bring in some new faces in defence. Having recruited so well last summer, the chances of the Southampton rearguard being strong once again next season look high, though.

Of Saints’ 15 clean sheets, 11 came at home – a tally only matched by Chelsea – with eight of those against sides in the bottom half of the league. Delivering in plum home fixtures is a huge plus for any Fantasy prospect, although the Saints’ inability to pick up defensive returns on the road is a concern, given that a price hike is on the cards. Their total of four away shut-outs was on a par with Leicester and Hull, for example, and half the number delivered by West Brom.

As mentioned in the Nathaniel Clyne article, our assessment of Southampton’s defence may well depend on Koeman’s choice of keeper in the continued absence of Fraser Forster. Both Kelvin Davis and Paulo Gazzaniga will undoubtedly be cheaper than the likes of Bertrand and if either can nail down a role as the Saints’ temporary number one for the first few months of the season, they may well prove a far more popular pick as we look to save on budget at the back.

Depends on what though. Benteke in a long ball playing team or a crossing direct team will get you more goals. Martinez in a counter attacking team will get you more goals.

For example Martinez would be a better fit for Arsenal and Pool than Benteke
For example Benteke would be a better fit for Chelsea and Man Utd than Martinez

I wouldn't agree with that in the case of Martinez though, for his age, cost, wages and the fact he's only played in Portugal really makes me worry. I think a lot of players struggle to adapt to the PL, its usually down to their own physicality though, and whether getting over that is a viable option for them. Some players will, some won't.

Having a thought about what I'd like NUFC starting 11 to be next season:

    ................Krul........................
    Janmaat Illori Colocinni Willems
    .........Colback Tiote.................
    ...Cabella Sissoko Ayew..........
    ..............Austin......................

Illori would be on loan, can't see Liverpool selling.

Ilori needs a PL loan. He's a top talent but sadly we have a defensively inept manager.

You'd do well to keep hold of Janmaat. Austin would be a good signing

Would like him to get a preseason under his belt and a couple more sub appearances first before working him into the starting 11. If we push too fast he could be out for a long time again, so would rather go slowly and be sure.

Sorry you're talking out of your arse, in terms of fan base, and commercially Liverpool are still a very big club, recent success just points to on field success, off the field Liverpool are now doing very well, with a stadium expansion on the way meaning even more income. Liverpool have the means to challenge consistently long term so long as the right infrastructure is put in place, Rodgers has undone all the good work off the field on it, you're presuming a big club is just the ones that have won trophies recently you tool.

Yep he's in the training squad for the WC. Think he finished as top try scorer in the Premiership this year.
Great finisher but poor enough all-round winger and a pit of a pr1ck. Don't think he'll still be there when the squad is cut down. Lancaster is not a fan.

So does this rule out Mata and Di Maria playing CM? That would mean that ADM, Mata, Depay & Young will battle for two spots on the wings.

At least people will be more familiar with some of their names though, especially the talented ones. More may be inclined to follow it, just to see how 'their player' is actually getting on.

Well that's that, Blatter is going to win. He got 133 votes to Prince Ali's 73. It will go to a second round because Blatter didn't get the 140 he needed for 2/3's majority. This round he only needs 105 votes to win.

You can just tell. I mean who in their right mind would award a WC to qatar? But hey, I hope those 1000s of lives lost on building sites were worth the few million in his back pocket.

Those lives were lost after they were awarded the cup. Nobody could have predicted that. Why have the english only started worrying about the working conditions after they lost the 2018 bid? Sounds like they need someone to blame for their weak bid

I never said i was in favour of qatar. I work in construction, we've cared a great deal about the injury rate in these areas of the globe for a long time. There is just minimal we can do when they are also very corrupt countries as well.

Actually. It was pretty obvious so many lives would be lost as there were published records of the number of deaths at other building sites in Qatar. + the working and playing conditions were an argument against Qatar from the very beginning

      Carrying on from earlier:

      What makes a big club?

There's no denying that at the moment, spurs have a better squad than Aston villa, Newcastle, Sunderland, Everton, and probably Liverpool. They also have a higher income than all those besides Liverpool so the gap will continue to grow.

But the general consensus is that they are one of the smallest clubs in that list. Why?

Spurs are just doing better at the moment, but it takes a lot more than that. History is a big factory, reputation, fan base etc.

There really isn't a way to define it though.

        haters/banter

Spurs are undoubtedly bigger than the first 3 in your list, not even close. Everton have probably gone down a peg with no Europe and ultimately when they lose Howard (some American fan base will go with him I suppose) and Liverpool are hanging on by their 'prestige' more than anything current.

      3. Piggs Boson
        • 12 Years

I think it's more history and the size of the fan base. I consider Spurs to be a top side, they have a long history of doing well in the top tier.

u can be a big club without much recent success.

Preferably with less teams, 24 team tournaments will be to diluted.
