Team of the Season – Sergio Aguero

Sergio Aguero reaffirmed his status as the league’s most lethal forward this season, racking up 26 goals as City finished second behind champions Chelsea. The Golden Boot winner justified his weighty 12.0 price tag, delivering attacking returns in 22 of his 33 appearances, and serving up a personal best of 216 points in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game.

The Statistics

As has been the unfortunate reality throughout his City career, Aguero was Fantasy gold when fit and firing yet inevitably succumbed to injury at some stage. Despite clocking significantly more pitch time than in the previous two campaigns, the Argentina international still only graced the pitch for 2532 minutes – put that into perspective, Eden Hazard managed 3373 minutes in Chelsea’s title-winning campaign. Nonetheless, Aguero still finished second overall behind the Belgian’s 233 points and ended the season as City’s top scoring Fantasy assets, some 25 points ahead of David Silva.

Handed a sub role for the first two Gameweeks due to World Cup duties for Argentina, Aguero emerged from the bench to net in cameos against Newcastle United and Liverpool. The South American preserved that momentum right through to Gameweek 14, tallying 14 goals and three assists over that period, with his price ballooning up to 12.9 as a result. The biggest wave of new owners (370,000) arrived after his four-goal spree against Tottenham Hotspur in Gameweek 8.

Aguero was then beset with injury for six Gameweeks, encouraging over one million owners to cash in on the Sky Blues striker. His ten starts following a full return in Gameweek 22 marked a downturn in productivity, harvesting just three goals and four assists as he struggled to recapture his lethal early-season displays.

From Gameweek 32 onwards, however, Aguero ran riot after Manuel Pellegrini moved from a 4-4-2 back to a lone striker system. Leading the line on his own, the Argentine turned in a breathless display of finishing prowess, notching nine goals and three assists – rendering him a must-have for City’s run-in.

This late flurry cemented his position at the summit of the scoring charts, having bagged five more goals (26) than his immediate challenger, Harry Kane (21). Aguero underlined his capacity for huge returns with three 15+ points hauls, netting two or more goals on six occasions. The former Atletico Madrid marksman supplemented this goal output with ten assists, becoming one of only three players (alongside Hazard and Silva) to post double figures in both the goals and assists columns.

Aguero’s scoring rate was unrivalled: no forward in the league could better his minutes per goal average (101.6), which in turn afforded him the best points per game average (6.5), ahead of Hazard (6.1). The Belgian livewire (42) did boast a superior tally of bonus points though, with Aguero (27) ranking fifth overall in that regard, just behind team-mate Silva (28).

The Prospects

As discussed in Monday’s article on Alexis Sanchez, the upcoming Copa America may have a part to play in our early-season plans. Pellegrini has insisted he will hand Aguero, Martin Demichelis and Pablo Zabaleta a 30-day break over the summer and bearing in mind that the Copa America final is on July 4, it may well be that, if Argentina progress to the latter stages, we could see a similar scenario to the 2014/15 campaign, when, as mentioned above, he was introduced off the bench in City’s first couple of matches.

As the chief goal threat for the league’s highest-scoring team in each of the past four years, a fully-fit Aguero will doubtless be the first name on most Fantasy managers’ squad list. To an extent, though, much may depend on how Pellegrini chooses to line up next term. There’s no question that Aguero functions better as a Fantasy asset on his own up top, though his manager’s penchant for a two-man frontline remains a concern.

The winter signing of Wilfried Bony could yet prove a spanner in the works, then. The Ivorian’s move from Swansea brought a proven Premier League scorer to the Etihad, yet he was handed just two starts by Pellegrini in 2015 after being snapped up for £28m on the back of his successful displays for the Welsh outfit.

Speaking on the former Swans striker recently, Pellegrini admitted that he was reluctant to start Bony in the midst of the Sky Blues’ winning streak but insisted he’ll be a key player next term:

“He was very unlucky maybe this year when we bought him because he started by going to the Africa Cup of Nations and he came back with a lot of games in his body. After that he had an important injury in his ankle and his knee in the same leg, so he stopped for about three or four weeks. After that we won five games in a row and I didn’t want to make changes during this moment. But it’s very important for him to play the minutes he can, first last week against Queens Park Rangers and now he has participated with a goal at Swansea. I am absolutely sure we bought the player that we need and that he will be important in our future.”

Time will tell whether Aguero and Bony can forge a mutually beneficial relationship, perhaps elevating the latter beyond an impact substitute and into a cheaper, yet profitable, route into City’s forward line. Certainly, if Bony can nail down a regular role ahead of the likes of Edin Dzeko and Stevan Jovetic, his record at the Liberty suggests he could be one to watch.

Elsewhere in the premium bracket, it remains to be seen whether Diego Costa can afford us a consistency of pitch time to rival Aguero, having missed 12 matches through injury or suspension last time out. Similarly, with Daniel Sturridge set to be sidelined for the first couple of months of the new season and the likes of Robin van Persie struggling for a starting berth at United, it’s difficult to look beyond Aguero as the one must-have striker in our three-man frontlines for the campaign ahead.

Hi Guys and Gals. Just a few tables that might hold some data worth knowing... or not.

    Premier League Income: http://www.stokesentinel.co.uk/Stoke-City-Ninth-Premier-League-joint-TV-money/story-26627699-detail/story.html

Contains the horrendous knowledge that if you watched most live TV games on sky you would have watched over half a season of Newcastle games. Also the shocker that the "big" teams get preference.

    Distances and travel issues: http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/32582509

Contains how far teams/fans travelled, goals on the road and how they responded after away games in Europe. Spurs losing 60% of games and Liverpool don't fare much better.

    Premier League stats: http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/32886670

Premier league best in the world? Stats on goals scored/conceded/times (helpful for betting it seems) and others compared to Europe's other top leagues.

Individual player tables for attacking stats look for things like touches in the box, shots on target and whwre taken from, chances created, mins per touch, conversion to goals

For clean sheets use the team stats page and look under defending.

        Just a rough idea

I guess it entirely depends on what you're looking for.

Defence. If you're looking for clean sheets then you can look at things like Big Chances Conceded, Attempts From Set Plays Conceded, Errors Leading to Goal, Goal Attempts In Box Conceded etc.
I also like attacking defenders so i use this http://members.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/my-stats-tables/view/704/

Attacking. Here's a little one i use http://members.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/my-stats-tables/view/191/ Just shows how creative and involved people are being and hopefully finding me someone who will hit form.

      Hope this helps.

Newcastle centre-back Mike Williamson is expected to leave St James' Park this summer, with the player said to be attracting interest from the Championship, reports the Newcastle Chronicle.

However, the north-east club will be able to add Jamaal Lascelles to their squad for next season after his loan spell at Nottingham Forest came to an end.

    No big loss there then

He's a bit off his head. I think Wenger will get fed up of him sooner or later. He must look at Sanchez and know that he is the sort of player you want to manage and spend time with...not some nob who can't stay fit and doesn't know how to behave.

He's a good player but he needs to know that players that are easy to manage and inspire those around him will always hold the trump cards. Sanchez and Santi at his own club are great examples of players that will go further than him and command more respect than him...and all done with a big smile on their face.

The whole system over here; the authorities, and in particular the press, can't wait to build up a young English player so they can knock them down before their career has even got going. Sterling is another great example of this; Grealish was demonised for the laughing gas photos less than a week after his FA Cup semi-final performance! They didn't hang around there!

Yes Wilshere is a pillock, but I'd have been a pillock if everyone was labelling me the next Gascoigne when I wasn't even at legal drinking age, then were chastising me a couple of years later.

They don't just want to build them up so they can knock them down...they do that all on their own most of the time. What did Sterling amd co think would happen if he got caught doing the laughing gas thing ?...

So there's no problem now with laughing gas after that first incident....get caught and the press will hound you...So they know, it's their choice.

I couldn't care less about a 19/20 year old taking a legal drug - I did far worse than that at that age. The Grealish photo was 6 months old, they'd obviously been waiting for him to break through so they could take him down a peg or two. They are teenage boys, the press shouldn't be trying to destroy their careers with sensationalism about things that, you can guarantee, the author did themselves at that age.

Fair enough if it's something appalling like the Leicester orgy, but things like laughing gas and smoking? They're young lads, IF it doesn't affect their football, why does it matter? Zidane, Cruyff, Rooney, Berbatov, Ozil, Prosinecki, Socrates all smoke/smoked during their careers. It's not the best idea obviously, and the clubs may want to do something about it, but it's none of our business.

I mean, they don't crucify Gerrard and fellows for going for beers (but only mildly react if he also fights when drunk), so what's the big deal with laughing gas then? Sure alcohol is the worse of the two drugs.

Kris Boyd was a goalscorer and he majorly flopped at 'boro.

Aye thats true, I guess its just how quick he adapts. He's on the fringe of the Scotland first team and Strachan picks Fletcher over him so that should be a good indication of what level he is at

I think part of the problem is there are a group of white managers that have the reputation that they will keep you up, if your a chairman you can't afford to get it wrong with the money on the line so you hire one of these people rather than take a risk.

For example I reckon Sam will be in demand after his break over a black manager, I do not feel this is racist but it certainly is built upon a past of racism we need to overturn, which is a very tricky thing.

Well, I know a lot of bits and bobs. And I think I accidentally read a spoiler about what happens at the end of this season. And I'm gutted because I ain't gonna have that excitement when or if it happens. I don't even know if it is true though.

I still haven't been able to get on board with the series, read all the books and some of the released chapters from Winds of Winter, but only got towards the end of the second series.

There was a scene involving Jaime and his cousin/relative , which felt so opposite to his character, that I have a problem continuing with it. On the other hand I do admit, it's really well made and the casting is unbelievably good

This season has been rubbish so far IMO, but that the last 15-20 mins of the latest episode made up for it. Awesome.

I 100% agree. There's just too much happening. This season could easily have been 2 seasons. You don't get to spend a lot of time with the characters that we love, like Tyrion. Also, they've killed off a lot of great characters (won't say who) which I used to love watching and the new characters that they've brought in aren't lovable at all.

Yeah not been feeling the sparrows or any scene in dorne. Ayria has taken 8 episodes or just cleaning floors but looks like she might finally be getting somewhere. Tyrian is still the main man. Steals the show any scene he's in.

Explanation: lack of an individual top striker who would have played all season. I mean, look at it, 843 goals divided very unevenly between 18 teams (46.3/team, median at 45, max at 80, min at 25) and not a single player scoring 20+ of them. Lewa played 28, but a lot with injury, Robben just 20, Dost 17 starts, even Meier had only 24 starts, Aubameyang played largely on flank (as of course did Robben and Müller).

What's your current best 11, out of the Liverpool, Arsenal, Utd and City's squads?
    Mine is

    --------------De Gea-----------

    -zabaleta--Kos---Sakho----Kolarov--

    -----------Toure--Cazorla------

    -Sanchez-----Silva----------Coutinho-

    -----------------Aguero--

It's lacking a little in balance but i think these guys are the best from the above teams. That's 1 Utd player, 5 city players, 2 liverpool players and 3 arsenal players. The fullbacks look particularly weak.

If I were to assemble a team on current form?

      ----------------------De Gea
      Bellerin Koscielny Mertesacker Monreal

      --------------Coquelin----Toure

      --Sanchez----------Ozil----------Silva

      ----------------------Aguero

I'm surprised it came out that Arsenal heavy! None of those sides have any really impressive defenders bar Koscielny, so on form I'd just put the Arsenal back 4 together in front of De Gea. Coquelin is the best holding midfielder in the sides (or maybe Carrick), Toure is in presuming he plays well, but that's hit and miss, so Cazorla could justifiably be put in ahead of him.

I think if you take out Silva and Aguero, and Toure has an off day (he has a lot) then City are very ordinary. I don't necessarily think the Arsenal defence are the best 4 players, but I view defences generally as a unit, particularly centre back partnerships, not as individuals. Ozil is a much better player than Coutinho, a lot of people just don't seem to notice how good he is because he makes it look so easy.

Arsenal, on paper, are not far away from a title winning side at all. Whether they'd be able to actually do it in real life is another matter, but a keeper, central midfielder and a striker and they are right up there.

Zabeleta has been dreadful this season. Azpilicueta is miles, miles better than Clichy. For all of the teams, I'd have:

                ------------------Courtois

                Ivanovic--Terry---Koscielny---Azpilicueta

                --------------Matic----Fabregas

                ---Sanchez-------Silva-------Hazard

Zaba hasn't played up to his standards this season, but is still a very good defender. Ivan is extremely overrated IMO because of the protection he gets.

Clichy is massively underrated as well considering how exposed he is often left, and I can't pick Azpi because he contributes nothing going forward. A modern day full back has to attack and defend, so he's only half a player.

I agree that Ivanovic is overrated, and that Zabaleta is better on top form, but I was doing that as if I was assembling a team now. Azpilicueta is the best pure defender in the league I think, and he can attack, he just isn't asked to in that system. I'd actually probably have Bellerin ahead of Ivanovic at the moment.

I don't think Azpi can attack as a left back, and he doesn't seem to well equipped to be an attacking right back.

I agree he is the best defensive full back, but in modern football, if you're assembling a super team, I'd always pick a Marcelo over an Azpi.

Yeh, but Marcelo was completely misused by Brazil. You have to treat him as a winger, and the left centre back has to cover.

In a team of superstars at Real Madrid, Marcelo has/is and continues to be one of their most important players.

An underrated player considering his contribution, imo.

I think they're just different keepers really. De Gea has definetly ben better this season though.

Courtois is a monster in the air, and a great shot stopper. De Gea is quicker, better with his feet, and a slightly better shot stopper, and I think those are the main duties of a modern goalkeeper.

Personally, I enjoyed "man in the stands" the most. For the most part, I agreed with their choices, but it did to lead to laziness, and certain players would get 3 BAPs for showing up. I also enjoyed coming on here and waiting for the bap chap before fpl started showing the bps live. This year, I didn't really spend much time thinking about the bonus point system, apart from cursing how fabregas was so good at picking up 2 or 3 with only an assist. And I guess the goal is probably to have the bonus point system create as little controversy as possible.

I guess I don't really care what the bonus point system is. I don't think there are stats which can perfectly select the best players from a game and a human judge will always be suspectible to bias. Fpl is not fair to the defensive midfielders of the world, but that doesn't really bother me.

This whole saga reminds me of when i was 9 and used to curse at rival clubs and its fans. Very childish both from wilshere and arsenal fans that support him, and vert here.

It's a bit of friendly rivalry. If you're a Spurs fan getting offended by an ARsenal player calling Spurs sh1t, you need to get your priorities straight. If you someone getting offended on someone else's behalf, you're a moron.

            It's just quasi-tribalism.

Nothing 'childish' about it within a footballing context. It's light in comparison to some banter between friends with differing allegiances.

I know. For the four years he was back at Blackburn it was impossible for anybody to be a better stopper than he was. Maybe some could be as good but you wouldn't better him. Sadly he'll only be remembered for Gazza making an arse of him.

Wilshere being charged is a bit silly. But singing about Tottenham at a trophy parade is foolish, childish and sums Wilshere up. Arsenal are far bigger and far better than Tottenham, why give them attention?

Anyway, something else to moan about. Lukaku giving the champions league football talk is hilarious. Everton should just get rid. He does this every year.

I'm pretty sure most of the chants Chelsea players sang on their Parade had swearing in... Fabregas is magic, Carefree, Celery etc. Just maybe they didn't sing the rude bits out loud.

Well i think that's more a case of exposure than a decline of Arsenal fans to be fair. Now we have constant access to these 'fans' saying and doing whatever they want and showing off about it. The 'thugs' of the old days were a lot less classy i can tell you, just they didn't have a platform to show themselves.

That's it, Arsenal have cruised along on the "beauty of their football" so you assume that the fans are that way inclined (even though they have been arguing for years if they should/shouldn't have Wenger), while Chelsea play rough and 'unsporting' etc you associate that with their fans too. Let us not forget that Arsenal used to be all about and still gleefully sing 1-0 to the Arsenal.

I'm a Philadelphia Union River End season ticket holder from day 1. It's in our blood in Philly to despise all NYC teams. NYCFC is too new to have a rivalry with just yet (tho the Union has been pretty awful so far and 4 of our 12 points have come from NYCFC, thanks!). But our FO just won't splash any cash out for big name players like Lampard, Pirlo, Villa, Gerrard, etc. And really those guys only want to go and live in two places, NYC or LA, which is unfortunate. Right now I'd be happy with Joey Barton on our squad to be honest. He'd be a legend in Philly. We need a player with some passion and some toughness.
