The Numbers Game – 2014/15 Review – Pardew’s Palace

In our latest article for members, we analyse the revival of Crystal Palace under Alan Pardew.

Arriving from Newcastle midway through the campaign, the former Eagles player steered his side to tenth spot in the table with a series of attacking displays that transformed their fortunes in the final third.

We sift through the season data to assess just how Pardew’s tenure impacted on the performance of the Palace squad, focusing on their output in terms of creativity and goal threat as we seek to identify would-be targets for the new campaign.

    Tactically Speaking – Slaven Bilic

"The 4-2-3-1 shape is based around two attacking full-backs, two deep-lying midfielders to protect the back four, three fluid, creative and goal-getting attacking midfielders and a versatile, mobile and clinical centre forward."

"As you would expect from a player who learnt his trade in Croatia, Bilic’s Besiktas favoured a short passing game and possession football, controlling the game in the opposition half of the pitch."

"Defensively, Bilic’s side were compact and well organised, conceding less than a goal a game and finishing among the Super Lig leaders in tackles, blocks, interceptions and clearances made."

"If they had any weaknesses, Bilic’s side could be caught out by opposition teams playing on the counter-attack, while their offensive attitude and high defensive line sometimes made them susceptible to attackers breaking their offside trap."

Looking at the Turkish league, Gala only conceded 3 more, Fenerbache conceded 3 less, and Instanbul conceded 2 less.

I'd say his defensive acumen is inconclusive.

Also, if he plays a high line, and/or is vulnerable to counter-attacks, he will be killed in the PL.

I don't agree with Sterling's attitude. However, Rodgers saying he was offered a phenomenal contract for his age (or something to that effect) with £100K a week on the table, and then Liverpool asking for £50m seems a bit hypocritical. If he's worth £50m as a 20 year old, a £100K is no more than "fair".

His potential makes 30m a realistic price in today's market. Him being English slaps on 10m, being golden boy slaps on another fee, strangely enough.

Seems to me that England's footballers should take a lesson from our cricketers. Both at full and U21 level the aim has been not to lose for So long, same as the cricket. Suddenly the cricketers decide on a 'go for it' approach and records are broken. Not saying our footballers wil break records, but can it get much worse?

I know, just messing about. But lets be honest, most people care more about their clubs than the national team. Hodgeson is uninspiring, our team is appalling, and it's the same dregs who fail with England that keep getting picked. The fact that Rooney is captain is exactly why I don't give a toss about England.

The real reason you and most others don't care about England is because we are shite and you care more about your club assets getting injured. Most England fans support shite clubs and want our country to do well

Firstly, Jamaica doesn't qualify for Copa, but is invited, like, for example, Japan before it. Bit similarly as if, say, Egypt or Algeria was invited to play EC some day.

Secondly, I think what Wakey is saying that it is not necessarily daft to describe Jamaica qualitatively as a typically African team rather than typically South American team.

Think the last tribe, Taino or something like that, were still there when the English arrived but have ceased to be. Not sure on the other true, the Arawak. Both were spread all around the Caribbean

Considering that you also have inherited the wealthy and nice position from your ancestors, maybe you should take a bit of responsibility of their means to get there too.

I can be grateful for my position, and want to do something for those less advantaged, but that doesn't mean I should feel any responsibility for something someone else did. Nobody should feel responsible for the actions of their parents, let alone generations far removed.

Well, you should at least reckon that you are born with an unfair advantage that is caused by historical wrongs. If you're enjoying it, maybe you should feel a bit responsible for the damage it causes. Particularly as it is not a thing of past. The fact that we buy means to get online with such an ease is due to slavery in Africa - the real Africa, not Jamaica. In tin and cobalt mines more precisely.

That said, history is cruel, all people have fecked all people up all the time, and it's really just been a question who comes out on the top. For the recent history, it was the Western Europeans, until their colonies in America beat them. In their defence, they also came up with universal human rights and abolishment of slavery, which are not small things historically, even if they don't seem to apply in the cobalt mines our enterprises make their business with.

The next winners may be the Chinese, don't expect them to be nice either.

Most important thing is to foster good relationships between current generations and not allow what happened in history to occur again. At least that's my take.

I know other Irish lads who go on as if the famine was still going on and that the English some how invented the potato blight.

            Okay.

‘My dream is 50 or even 60 goals like Lionel Messi and Ronaldo,’ said Hazard.
‘They have shown it is possible, so I can do the same.'

Doesn't say when, though, and probably means in all competitions, can't remember when Ronaldo/Messi scored over 50 league goals. Still, not impossible, but he must play in a different role to do it. Won't happen in Mou's Chelsea, especially as long as he plays on midfield.

Yeah but I didn't say when either to be fair, I said "in A season" 😉

I disagree, I genuinely don't think he'll ever go above 35 goals in a season. Ronaldo and Messi are special players and we really are blessed to see them play as part of the same generation - let alone in the same league in rival teams.

There may be a clause that odds higher than 1.8 are required, or something.

Anyway, this is a great offer even without the refund. I would put a 100€ on one of those (probably Brazil) if possible even without refund. The odds are just so exaggerated.

Because of institutional sexism which has meant women's football is underfunded and under developed.

It's a fast emerging sport. Some people clearly enjoy it. Stop using your own opinion as indicative of everyone's.

Well the socio-economics behind professional tennis is completely different to women's football. But that would literally take 1000 words to unpack.

Women's tennis has had better backing from organisers, sponsors and the media because women playing tennis has been traditionally seen as more acceptable - better prize money, more attention, shares a stage with men's tennis. Plus tennis players generally come from more affluent backgrounds than football players - tennis coaching and membership costs a lot of money - so they tend to have better financial support while they break through.

Tennis also has a pretty long history, which has its fair share of sexism. Originally many considered it too unsuitable for women to do competitively because they could, you know, get all sweaty and that. It took until last decade for the prize money to reach the heights of the men's tennis. It's easy to say now that there's no sexism in it, but still decade and a half ago sexism in tennis was a big issue.

True but people have generally been more accepting of women playing tennis than football. My grandmother (1930s/40s), my mother (1960s/70s) and I (1990/2000s) all went to all girls schools. Every single one of us played tennis at school, as a part of physical education or extra-curricula activities. None of us were given the opportunity to play football. I went outside of school to play football.

there isn't any institutional sexism in those sports, that's the point. you're comparing a sport like athletics where women were first beginning to be accepted back in the 19th century to a sport that's been around since the 70s, of course there's a difference.

                Nope.

Firstly, it took time for women's tennis to be accepted too. First it was seen as too physical for women to play. It was ridiculed. And then it became accepted, and funded, and then watched, and then better funded and then more watched.

Women's football has been developing only for about two decades. It takes time for both players and audiences to develop. There's nothing about football that inherently would make it a bad sport for women. Quite the contrary, it is more about team play and technique than most sports, so it is particularly suiting to be played by women.

Secondly, while women's football still is way underfunded, relatively men's football but also relatively to, for example, women's tennis, women's World Cup finals have received over 10 million tv audiences in USA alone when USA has been playing. At best, 1999 18 million in USA were watching USA v. China back when USA was still way above the others. That beats any tennis match audience loudly, men or women. And it does not even count the audiences in other countries.

Yup. I watched the entirety of Norway vs Germany. It was competitive and some good interplay. The goals exhibited some of the best and worst points of women's football - questionable goalkeeping and subtle technique. If you aren't prepared to give it a chance, fair enough. But calling them savages because they have a pony tail to keep the hair out of their eyes is frankly ridiculous. Playing football without tying your hair back is idiotic.

I try to watch some because I think it's important to support it. Football may not be good in some matches, that's due to woefully underfunded systems etc.

Massive fan of the Brazilian, Marta. I think she shows that women can develop to be technically great, and I imagine even better with the right resources.

        Marta is fantastic. 😀

And yes, part of the issue is definitely under-funding. Only one do the Norwegian team tonight was fully professional and you could tell the difference.

Absolutely, a credit to the sport and very inspirational!

Absolutely. It is criminally under resources, Marta herself struggled to make it work as a football player and I think she's the best in the world.

Ah I remember those days fondly. I used my brother's 360 when I was at home so when I started uni I was torn between the 360 and PS3 for myself. Anyway, instead of making a decision I decided I'd get both on my first student loan-day. Spent the next couple of months living off super noodles and Sainsbury's vodka (tasted like paint stripper). Best days of my life.

That's what the dirt-cheap vodka was for. Consumed that before I went on the nights out and then spent as little money as possible once I was actually out.

Ha, lived with a couple of those. Maths student here, a lot of lecture time and less studying in your own time. A lot of 9am starts and 6pm finishes. Some of the days were so long I think being out five nights a week would've killed me off.

History. It can never decide if it's one of the arts or a humanities. Confused. In fact, I'm into my 5th year of studying it and I still don't really know what it is. My area's almost social science.

Ahh right. I'd always thought of it as having been lumped in with the humanities. Though there has never seemed much milk of human kindness in any of the history I've read (which is little and mainly English).

It seems to me to be the start or culmination of most of our other bits of history. We only stop fighting long enough to repopulate the working classes so they can make the wealth then get slaughtered in the next round.

I'm not sure who said it, but the only thing we learn from history is that we never learn from history. Or something v similar.

More of the same I fear until we destroy the capacity of the planet to support us.

What with Copa America being the flavour of the season, I've been asked to write some articles for some extra cash.

First article is about three Brazilians we'd like to see in the Premier League.

I think I'm settled on Roberton Firmino and Felipe Anderson but not so sure on a third. Any suggestions guys? Would be much appreciated.

Might've gotten our wish with Nathan gone to Chelsea, I've heard good things about him

      Marquinhos maybe?

Personally, I'm a big fan of Lucas Moura. Would love to see him in the prem.

Neymar, just to test a theory that when he and Ryan Shawcross collide a black hole will form.

Thanks for the suggestions. Thinking of someone who isn't massively known and isn't already at a big European club so liking the look of Douglas Costa at the moment.

Costa and Bernard will probably both move this summer. I'm guessing Shaktar Donetsk will spend a second season not playing at home due to the craziness over there, and they both wanted a move last year because of it.

Yeah it's crazy over there. I'm thinking Costa would be much better suited to the PL out of the two though.

On a side note, looked the other month at the Shakhtar squad and of their first team squad of 26 players, 13 were Brazilian, 12 were Ukrainian and 1 was Croatian.

Does anybody know the history behind Shakhtar's massive Brazilian contingent?

Quite simply, money. You don't have to offer fringe national team players in Brazil anywhere near what you'd have to pay their european counterparts. The amount of Brazilians has attracted more.

I think the defence is usually Ukranian, the attack Brazilian.

If you want very obscure, Gabriel Barbosa at Santos is hotly tipped to be the next big Brazil star. Only 18, but broke into the Santos team at 16.

Lovely nugget of info, I'll definitely get hipster points for that. Not sure that converts to pound sterling though.

So me and my mates went with a winner/ top goalscorer double for the Copa.

    We ended up with

    Argentina + Sanchez
    Argentina + Falcao
    Argentina + Aguero

    Anyone wanna post a prediction?

      Brazil + Jackson Martinez

With you on this. Think Argentina will win it and my two top goalscorer bets are Falcao and Aguero. Never thought of the winner/top scorer double to be honest.

Thought Falcao at 20s was great value. Poor for United but four goals in his last three Colombia games suggests he'll score goals this month.

From Pat Rice's book: "Gervinho was bullied the most. Frimpong, Wilshere and Jenkinson all had warnings for calling him retardinho."

Serious? Frimpong? If I was him, I would be a very quiet boy...

Wilshere should be sold. As long as they can still make money with him.

Jack Wheelchair can hardly criticise others

Gervinho has been a more useful asset to Arsenal than he has

Under 21s -just returned from deepest sunniest Barnsley
England overall did not look great shakes- a lot of fiddling in midfield with limited direct play coupled with occasional hollywood passes, solid at back.
-ward prowse's crossing + corners poor
-carroll and pitchard slowing the game down
-will hughes full of energy but limited result

    positively
    -john stones(first half)+ ben gibson (90 mins + goal)looked very solid
-standout for me was loftus-cheek on his debut, looking fit with and without the ball, doing very simple passing mixed with direct surges forward-one leading to a foul/sending off/freekick/goal.He played well forward of his chelsea position(even when ings and harry kane came on the pitch)and seemed to exude class and extra time that goes with this

ward prowse looked out of sorts-he claimed the corners and most of the free kicks but in both areas was woeful-only played first half-not sure what was happening
