Scout Report – Cedric Soares

Following hot on the heels of Juanmi’s move to St Mary’s Stadium, Sporting Lisbon right-back Cedric Soares penned a four-year deal with Southampton on June 18, amid competition from Stoke City.

Speaking on their latest recruit, Saints’ director of football Les Reed revealed that long-term target Soares will be invaluable as the club fight on multiple fronts next term:

“Cedric represents a quality addition to our squad, and is another player with a desire and hunger to succeed. We have been following Cedric’s progress for some time and felt now was the time to make our move. While there was competition from other Premier League clubs we were confident we would prove to be an attractive option for such an ambitious player. We have now signed two exciting talents early in the window and will continue in our pursuit of Premier League success and our European journey.”

Soares also took time out to discuss his move, with the defender relishing the opportunity to make his mark in the Premier League:

“I joined this club because I believe we can do better and better every year. Everyone knows that the Premier League is a very, very good league – and maybe the best one in the world – so for me it’s a pleasure to be here, but even more of a pleasure to be in Southampton. Southampton is a big, big club in England and is very respected. It’s a club with a lot of history and, for me, it’s very important to play for a big club. I think this is a very good move.”

The History

Soares was born in Singen, Germany but moved to Portugal (the native country of his parents) when he was two years old. At just eight years of age, Soares was integrated into Sporting Lisbon’s youth system, where he remained until the 2010/11 Primeira Liga season. In May of that season, Soares was handed his debut for the senior squad – a 1-0 home league defeat to Vitoria de Setubal. He went on to make four more appearances during the campaign, notching one assist in the process.

To further his development, Sporting sent the right-back on loan to another top-flight outfit, Académica de Coimbra, for the 2011/12 season. While there, he was part of the side that bested his parent club, Sporting, in the Portuguese Cup Final, sealing Académica’s first Taca de Portugal trophy since 1939. Upon his return to Lisbon, Soares became a more regular fixture in the first team throughout the following three seasons, tallying two goals and 11 assists across 89 appearances in all competitions.

On the international stage, Soares accrued a remarkable 72 caps across six levels of Portugal’s youth system before making the step up to the senior squad in 2014. The attacking full-back managed a single assist for the U21 side and has since gone to earn four caps for the full squad.

The Prospects

Soares’ move to Southampton is widely expected to pave the way for their incumbent right-back, Nathaniel Clyne, to complete a £15 million trade to Liverpool or Manchester United. The Merseysiders’ opening £10 million offer was rebuffed last month, yet the Saints are said to be resigned to losing the English defender in the coming weeks.

In an ideal situation for Fantasy managers, Clyne’s proposed switch to Anfield would occur after the player lists are released, thus reducing Soares’ starting price by virtue of him being the “back-up” right-back in their squad. Such a scenario could see him priced around 5.0 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, though if that doesn’t transpire, a price of 5.5 or even 6.0 looks likely, putting him in line with the likes of Ryan Bertrand and Jose Fonte, who are both due price hikes following strong 2014/15 campaigns.

Soares recorded just two goals for Sporting Lisbon in 94 outings, yet 12 assists over that period highlights his attacking potential. In terms of frequency of assists throughout their careers, the Portugal international trumps Clyne, with his average of one assist every 671 minutes bettering the Englishman’s rate of one every 802 minutes.

Certainly, having racked up 15 clean sheets in each of the last two seasons, Southampton’s backline is likely to arrive on our radars once again. Furthermore, their favourable start to the season (new, EVE, wat, NOR, wba, MUN, SWA) encourages investment in their defensive ranks.

Of the four home ties that Koeman’s troops embark on before their trip to Chelsea in Gameweek 8, the Manchester United clash appears the toughest on paper – although Southampton defeated Louis van Gaal’s outfit 1-0 in their last meeting. Given that the Saints boasted the joint-best clean sheet record (11) at home last term, this bodes well for these early-season exchanges as Koeman looks to take advantage of the fixtures and set the standard for another impressive campaign.

The likely departure of Clyne and the impact on his own price tag will be pivotal to Soares’ potential as a Fantasy asset. In addition, Fantasy managers will also be monitoring the valuation of loan keeper Maarten Stekelenburg, signed just 24-hours ago. He could well trump Soares to emerge as the most budget-friendly defensive option at St Mary’s.

Giving it a miss this year. Can't say I'm overly disappointed looking at the line up, but it's always great fun of course (and you probably won't remember most of it anyway).

Ah so are you a bit of a veteran then? It's my first time, so less bothered about the line up then I would be! Bit gutted to see the Foo Fighters drop out though. Which years have you been/who headlined?

Went 5 years on the trot whilst at boarding school in Somerset.

2007-2011, saw some pretty memorable sets.

Arctic Monkeys, Kings Of Leon, Jay-Z, Muse, U2, Coldplay and Beyonce.

Not always Glastonbury, but been to a festival every year since 2008. 2008-10 Leeds, 2011 End of the Road, 2012 Bestival, last 2 years Glastonbury.

At Glastonbury, the best acts are often not on the Pyramid Stage. There are so many bands on, and my favourite parts were often away from the music (Shangri-La and the Stone Circle at night).

If I was going with a different bunch of mates, I imagine we'd spend the whole time at the smaller stages, checking out some of the more obscure bands we know. But i'm happy enough to follow the crowd this time round. Yeah, I've heard that's the case, really looking forward to seeing all these things!

So no festivals for you this year Doolittle? Concentrating all your efforts on masterminding a winning fpl season?

William's Green is one of the best smaller stages. Has a great line up this year - also undercover so handy for when it rains. That's where I'll be the most I think.

I was going to go to End of the Road festival again (probably my favourite that I've been to), but I kind of just never got round to getting tickets. I saw Joanna Newsom there in 2011 and it was my favourite festival set ever (alongside Radiohead at Leeds 2009).

Aye, while you're all off watching bands and taking "substances of your choice", I shall be looking at Bournemouth goalkeepers and West Brom rotations. Try to control your jealousy.

I saw Joanna Newsom at ATP's festival at Minehead around then. I'm not embarrassed to say that it almost brought me to tears - incredible set.

Same Jonty, for me she's the greatest songwriter of her generation. Many I know can't stand her though, her voice turns a lot of people off (I love it myself).

On my hope to see list is The Buzzcocks, Stealing Sheep, The Fall, Billy Bragg, Wilko Johnson, Courtney Barnett, La Femme, Giant Sand, Franz Ferdinand with Sparks, Belle and Sebastian and the excellent Phantom Band.

Scottish band. Playing William's Green just after 80s cult prog rock legends Bevis Frond. The FF and Sparks album is excellent. Really recommend it...they should be great...headlining the John Peel stage on Sunday.

Shucks. I must admit to being pretty chuffed to be part of the festival. If you get a chance check out Declan McKenna - he won the emerging talent contest this year and is playing a couple of the smaller venues (Rabbit Hole and William's Green) over the weekend. One to watch - he's only 16 but writes songs like a seasoned pro.

Have fun. If you see a short guy looking a bit like an older Santi Cazorla/thinner Rafael Benitez hanging around the smaller venues then say hi, it'll either be me, or Cazorla on a bad day, or Benitez on a diet. 🙂

Went every year it was on between 86) when the Cure headlined) through 97. Haven't been since but had some memorable times there.

Got arrested by the Police for hitch-hiking on the hard shoulder; got forcefully ejected after (rather unfortunately) climbing over the "wrong" fence in an effort to get in for free (the fence led to the security enclosure).

Was fortunate enough to see the Pixies, Jeff Buckley, and an up-and-coming Oasis, Verve, and Radiohead before any of them made it big; got completely caned the year the dance acts invaded (808 State, the Orb, Primal Scream). There were some legendary parties after hours in the Bedouin field. Sigh.

One thing is for sure - it really ain't no fun when it rains!

presuming Hobbit's age same as humans then prob is about right,

Bilbo was prob in his 20s in The Hobbit then in his 70s/80s in LOTRs

iirc, exactly 60 years between the Hobbit and LotR. Erebor is mentioned only in passing in the LotR books, Dain Ironfoot controls it and together with Thranduil defends that region from sauron's forces. The other interesting connect is that Balin + a couple of others from the hobbit company try to reclaim Moria between the events of hobbit and LotR

Poor old Balin and gang get absolutely slaughtered when they start rebuilding Moria because they awaken the Balrog (Durin's Bane). It's Balin's tomb that Gimli discovers (the scene where he breaks down and then gets super pissed + stands on the tomb to defend against orcs)

I remember reading The Hobbit to my son when he was about six. He loved it. He likes the films now...but the book is much better.

Complete reverse for Lord of the Rings. Books are pretty bad in comparison to the awesome films, mainly because those really long songs are cut out of the film and the books don't have Christopher Lee.

            Agree,

The only thing I can think of which annoys me re: LOTR films is the failure of Legolas to bring down the orc carrying the bombs that blow up a gap in Helms Deep, he gets three goes it and can't bring him down. He simply doesn't miss anything and then this 🙂

Yeah, he can cut the rope with one shot but can't hit an orc in the head with three. Also cutting the rope that held the ladders alone is enough to show that their death toll count with Gimli mostly demonstrates that maths is not their strong point. I would love somebody to count how many orcs Legolas kills in that battle in the film. Then to think they don't even show every shot he takes as he sometimes kills orcs on the background.

That's the number from the book to be fair, you could just view it as Legolas letting Gimli beat him (ie being a friend)

True, it is the number from the book, but in the film was that Legolas visibly killed way more than 41. just saying that maybe they shouldn't have made all those scenes with Legolas killing tons of orcs if they were going to stick to that number.

I haven't made a count, in fact. Guess someone has.

It was fairly poor overwll, but the last three episodes made up for the poor first half to the series.
The story with the Stark girl was a big let down for me.

I don't think the last three episodes made up for it. I honestly only really enjoyed the last 20 mins of eps 8 & 9. The last ep was a mis-match in pacing and impact.

Highlight was def the battle at the end of 8 though. One of the best scenes in any GOT episode. Rest of the series was a slog TBH.

If you do not use your full allocation of transfers for a single Matchday, then one free transfer will roll over to the next Matchday for you to use.

But if you look under rules - transfers(where I found quote above) only the 3 first rounds are called "matchday" and the term is not used on semi finals that are just called semi finals.

Still not clear if I just use one transfer today would render me 7 transfers in semis

    1. 420king
      • 9 Years

it's still a matchday, just called semi finals instead of "4"

What makes you think final is treated differently as with no free transfers to final?

I mean it does not have be the same transfer you saved the matchday before, it could very well be any of the other 6

            1. 420king
              • 9 Years
              8 years, 10 months ago

the trick is not in the final, the trick is in free transfers not rolling over twice in a row.

the rules state that FT will only roll over if you don't use your full allocation of transfers. If you had 7 transfers in semi finals and only used 6, you would have used 6 out of 6 allocated and therefore the FT wouldn't roll over again.

(I'm 100% about this, spoke with support thru email)

So they automaticly assume it is the same transfer that travels 2 rounds.
                Oh well.

But if so I see nothing saying final having different rules so should be able to have 7 there also.

I'm pretty sure we can, just remember that FT doesn't roll over twice in a row.

Why you seem to hang on the idea that it would have to be the same physical transfer that is saved when it in fact can be used and one of the new 6 transfers gets saved

                "Thanks for your enquiry.

Unfortunately free transfers do not roll over more than once. Your full allocation was six + one rolled over. As you used six, none rolls over to this week from that allocation, and the extra one also expires. This is why you only have one free transfer for this week.

                Kind regards and good luck!

However, if you just treat is as another programme, rather than a sequel to the first season, you'll probably enjoy it. It's already had a couple great moments. 😀

Potentially. Just joined Schalke off the back of a good season. Many German pundits rate him as their best midfielder...he can't be that bad.

England v New Zealand in a t20 starts in just under and hour, the form their in it should be a cracking game to watch even if your not that keen on cricket

I've backed them but just 10 pound 🙂 Williamson and Hales in 5 pound singles and a 5 pound double for top run scorers too

I have a feeling we could see a record aggregate score, clear sunny weather, bookies have them even both 10/11

I see Hannibal is being cancelled after 3 series, shame as its an absolute treat (at least the first 2 series were).

Hopefully, Mikkleson is brilliant, just wish he'd killed off Will Graham - takes poe-faced to a new level.

Do you know if Vlaar has been linked with any club? Last year United was all over him, and now as a free agent not a word

He's an average defender, around 30 and very injury prone.

A lot of players with their contract running out get linked to Man United for a better deal

Utd must get Leno to replace De Gea.

He is a phenomenal talent and can learn a lot off Valdes and LvG.

          Sa, Busk
          Corb, Caderabek, Gibson, Guerrero, Stoikovic
          Silva, Redmond, Djuricic, Can, Frydek
          Volland, Kane, Berardi

I am 257 total rank and played my WC.
I want to replace Berardi, Redmond (maybe Hojberg) and I want def from Danemark. Need advice

Vestergaard or A Christensen if you want Denmark defender.

I'd keep Berardi as England have looked shaky at the back. Wait for lineups to see if Hojbjerg plays.
