Moving Target

Moving Target – Robert Huth

Earlier this week, Leicester City announced the signing of Robert Huth on a three-year deal from Stoke City. The German centre-back joins the Foxes’ ranks after enjoying a hugely successful spell on loan last season, tallying 14 appearances after making the switch in January.

The History

Born in East Berlin, Huth spent his early years training at a couple of local youth academies (VfB Fortuna Biesdorf and 1. FC Union Berlin), before Chelsea identified his potential and brought him to Stamford Bridge in 2001. Having joined the Blues at the tender age of 17, Huth made his first appearance in the final match of the 2001/02 season, but failed to cement a regular starting berth due to the fierce competition from John Terry, William Gallas and Ricardo Carvalho. The 6ft 3in defender recorded just 62 appearances and two goals during his five-season spell with Chelsea.

Huth then made the switch to Middlesbrough in pursuit of first-team football, with the Yorkshire club stumping up £6 million to land their man. A catalogue of ankle injuries contrived to restrict the Germany international to just 25 appearances across his first two seasons at the Riverside Stadium. Boro’s relegation to the Championship in 2009 saw Huth plot a route back to the Premier League with Stoke City, having registered two goals in 63 outings for his new club.

Huth instantly established himself as a mainstay in the Potters rearguard and went on to feature in all but 15 of Stoke’s league fixtures in his first four seasons at the club. Consecutive knee operations then limited Huth to 13 appearances in the next term and a half, before Leicester snagged him on a loan deal in February of this year. Starting every fixture under Nigel Pearson, Huth bagged one goal during his stay at the King Power Stadium – by the time he left the Britannia, the big German had netted 18 times in 188 outings across all competitions.

Early on in his career, Huth enjoyed a regular starting role in Germany’s senior squad, partnering Per Mertesacker in the 2005 Confederations Cup. He went on to notch two goals in 19 outings, earning his last cap back in 2009.

The Prospects

When Huth arrived at Leicester after Gameweek 24, the Foxes ranked joint-bottom alongside Queens Park Rangers in terms of clean sheets (four). The following 14 Gameweeks harvested six shut-outs, with five clean sheets arriving in their final seven match-ups. Whether Leicester can emulate those late-season performances without the looming spectre of relegation is another matter, though.

Considering that Pearson opted to field three centre-backs in either a 3-5-2 or 5-4-1 set-up in the second half of the campaign, Huth offers the security of starts alongside club captain, Wes Morgan. Indeed, even if Pearson switches to a four-man backline, Huth’s minutes looks unthreatened, with Marcin Wasilewski the likeliest candidate to drop out in the heart of defence.

Delving into the data, Huth and Morgan caused all manner of problems for opposing defences during the run-in, furnishing Leicester with a potent aerial threat from set-pieces. From Gameweek 25 (his first match for Leicester) onwards, Huth ranked joint-third among all defenders for total attempts (16) and lead the way for efforts inside the box (15), with his solitary goal coming in a dramatic 3-2 comeback victory over West Bromwich Albion. Morgan, meanwhile, placed second in terms of shots inside the box (13) and attempts on target (five).

Elsewhere at the back, the rampaging Jeffrey Schlupp was a Fantasy favourite in the first half of the campaign by virtue of his out-of-position potential on the left flank, resulting in two goals in the first 13 Gameweeks. The arrival of Christian Fuchs not only places question marks over Schlupp’s minutes next time out, though, it may well afford us the best route into the Foxes defence, with the Austrian – a set-piece specialist – likely to be handed the left wing-back berth should Pearson continue with a 3-4-1-2.

Bearing in mind that Leicester finished the previous season with the fourth-worst defence, there’d be no surprise if their main defenders remained around the 4.5 mark. Should Fuchs come in at 5.0, though, Huth and Morgan are likely to battle it out for our attentions as cheaper alternatives and with a favourable start to the season (SUN, whu, TOT, bou, AVL, sto), Fantasy managers may well be eyeing up the German as a viable budget option for our five-man defences.

I'd be all over Robert Huth is he was £4.5m, could even double up with Morgan with those fixtures at that price.

        Very much this.

Also, a very good signing by Leicester. The sort of player Redknapp should have bought in for us instead of flippin' Rio Ferdinand!

I still reckon Huth's was the signing that changed their season around

This. No brainier really. Sky Sports carrying story suggesting Schneiderlin's stats are right up there with Matic, Fernandinho and Coquelin, and is much ahead of Carrick and Blind.

Stekelenburg and/or Soares will come in as the cheapest clean sheet options.

Other than that, J-Rod could come in as a budget friendly forward option when fit. Mané will probably cost a lot more and has a lot of competition for minutes.

Very well said by BK. Soares looks to be the best option at defense. Jose Fonte (the captain) in my opinion, will swallow the Bonus points. He is our anchor back there. I'm hoping we roll out with a 4-2-3-1... The three (attacking midfielders)/wingers being Mane, JWP and Shane Long. In that case, JWP would be in the "hole" and after scoring his first premier league goal last year, I can see him breaking out this season. Yes there is competition at every position it seems, but we'll see how it all shakes out. Graziano Pelle obviously is looking to repeat his start to last season. He goes in waves do you got to catch him at the right time.

I dont think he's better than Carrick, so if Carrick is fit he'd have to play further forward in the 3, but that might be too defensive against weaker teams, so might he actually see time on the bench?

Carrick was 33 last year and absolutely vital for them when fit. I don't see any reason why Carrick should be dropped, if he is deemed better.

Because he was the only decent defensive midfielder they had. He gave the team the balance they needed, but that doesn't mean he's a good player. Schneiderlin gives them that and more.

He benched £30m Herrera for large parts of the first half of the season, and benched £60m ADM for Fellaini and Young in the latter half.

I dont think LvG deems that particularly important.

Nah, Schneiderlin at the base of the 3 seems most likely. Carrick to play in the 'big' games.
A second midfielder could be signed in addition - Schweinsteiger/Gundogan?

Herrera - Carrick - Schneiderlin is a big possibility in the bigger games though.

    -----------Herrera------------------------------------Gundogan/Schweni

I guess this is the sort of XI United are striving to get it this season, and as much as I hate to say it, that can win them the league.

Ramos and Otamendi won't be signed, just one of them. Lloris is just a rumour, a backup GK like Begovic/Cillessen is possible with Valdes first choice.

      Fabinho/Coleman - Smalling - Otamendi/Ramos - Shaw/Blind

Utd won't sign a new GK, the plan all along has been for Valdes to replace De Gea.

Signing 2 CB's is unrealistic especially one of them being Ramos.

Utd will make 3/4 signings max. I expect them to be Fabinho, Otamendi and Schneiderlin then possibly a striker.

Cazorla, Theo, Ox. Wenger started with Arteta/Wilshere/Ramsey/Özil/Alexis/Giroud (4141) last season and that only changed because of injuries. Ramsey and Wilshere are pushing Wenger to play centrally and have already spoken to him about it several times. It's best for the club in long term if we play like this and I can see one of those two leaving if we don't.

Cech has a great record and I being a gooner am happy. Posts here and elsewhere have been mentioning him as a great organiser at Chelsea, but I thought that was what Terry did. Please someone with more authority on Chelsea reassure me that Cech was the one doing the organizing.

When the set up on corners Terrry did. Cech is organising the wall on free kicks, nothing special. Cech is the best when talking about judgement when to go out on a throw ball or a cross, he is the legend for that. It will be great asset for Arsenal. I am afraid we are making a mistake selling to direct rival. Arsenal can win it all this season. Or even Liverpool, they have huge upside IMO. They are my dark horse this year

Absolutely no chance that Liverpool win it. With SAS fit and at their best plus no European football they couldn't do it. They have too many new signings that need to gel and that will take months at least, plus the added Europa League fixtures. I hope I don't sound biased but no matter who they or Tottenham sign, they won't be able to break the top 4 barrier imo. It's just that with the spending power of Chelsea and the Manchester clubs, and now Arsenal, it's almost impossible to do so.

Czech stands there and tells them what to do. Terry just instinctively knows what has to be done and gives the bollocking if it's not being done or, more often, will go and do it himself. Legend.

Will there be any rule changes in FPL to reward individual defensive displays rather than team displays rather than bonus point gains. A centre back or defensive midfielder could be man of the match, winning ball all game, plenty of accurate passes only to have his tally undone buy a colleagues defensive lapse conceding a goal. His BPS will look good but the goal conceded kicks him down the Bonus Point chart for that game.

didn't phrase it very well, apologies

If a defender loses a CS then yes, their BAPs should be lower than ones who kept a CS. But in a 0-0 situation it seems bizarre to me that the defenders who worked harder for their CS are generally the ones less likely to get BAPs

    4. GreennRed
      • 12 Years

It is a team game. If a forward misses a sitter, his other colleagues in the forward line, no matter how well or poorly they play are not penalized. Why are all defenders penalized for conceding a goal, could have been a forward's mistake not taking his man at the far post while defending a corner. If one forward scores it doesn't benefit the other forwards bar the assister.

However if one defender has an outstanding game in a 3-0 win he might end up with no bonus points and a clean sheet 6 points, same as the other defenders who didn't play as well. The same player who has a stormer in defence could be penalized by a colleagues mistake.

At least in a system that rewards good defence for individuals by giving points for recovered balls it'd be worth investing in defenders who are not so attack minded. Take some of the clean sheet bonus off defenders but in the case where one player is clearly at fault for losing the clean sheet deduct more points from him.

      1. money face bandwagon

attacking defenders cost more than those not so attacking..baines coleman higher priced than distin for eg. i think its enough of a compensation.

          • 12 Years

But it's still rewarding defenders for good attacking stats and not rewarding them for goo defensive displays. As JK says, those defenders who work harder for cleansheets are less likely to get Baps. That's because the rules reward more attacking play, a defender who's more attacking is more likely to do less defensive work than his more defensive minded colleagues. They'll get more chance of attacking related points like completed passes and good crosses, and the defender who sits in front of their goal, instrumental in keeping a clean sheet cannot get any attacking points and not as rewarded by good defending but penalized if they concede.

agreed. some of the scoring for fantasy football games is shocking. in the sun dreamteam players have to score 7/10 or more to get 3 points. so many times you will have a defender such as cahill in your team, Chelsea win 4-0 against hull or someone, but the paper gives cahill a 6 even though he go6b a clean sheet and didn't do anything wrong in game. worst bit was in dreamteam Europe. gave iniesta man of match in final on sat night and updated the table, only to change the MOTM to suarez on sun morning thus costing a few players at least £500 in prize money! luckily I finished 7th overall

With autosubs, is it the most points player from the bench coming for least point players or just for no shower?

Would the position of the subs matters? 1st sub coming in or depend on the formation we playing?
