Pre-Season

Sleeper – Juan Mata

During the final few weeks of the 2013/14 season, Juan Mata showed he was settling into life as a Manchester United player following his £37.1 million move from Chelsea, scoring six goals in his final six appearances.

The Spanish international, priced at 9.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) ahead of the 2014/15 campaign, netted twice in United’s first four matches and seemed to have cemented a regular starting role in Louis van Gaal’s line-up.

With club record signing Angel Di Maria and fellow new boy Radamel Falcao thrust into the reckoning, Mata went into the season uncertain of his position in the pecking order. He duly failed to feature in three of United’s matches between Gameweeks 6 and 12, although he did register a goal and an assist during that period. Primarily due to injuries to others, the former Chelsea man regained a regular spot in the first XI from Gameweek 13, and he notched another two goals and pair of assists, before finding himself on the periphery of the first-team picture once again from Gameweek 23.

Mata would have to wait until the home encounter with Tottenham in Gameweek 29 for his next start, and he would go on to score three goals and provide an assist in his next trio of appearances, as United found their best form of the season to see off Liverpool, Aston Villa and Manchester City. The Spaniard was now a vital member of the United side, and he would start every match for the rest of the season, although with Van Gaal’s men failing to score in four of their final six clashes, Mata’s only attacking points were from the penalty spot at Crystal Palace.

He finished the season as United’s joint-highest scorer along with David de Gea in FPL on 138 points, scoring nine goals and bagging four assists from 33 appearances (27 starts). When compared to the top three FPL midfielders, Mata’s goal conversion rate of 27.3% was far superior to Eden Hazard (17.9%), Alexis Sanchez (13.2%) and David Silva (18.2%), though the United man’s frequency of attempts (a shot every 73.2 minutes) was significantly slower than Hazard (45.2), Sanchez (25.4) and Silva (41.6).

THE PROSPECTS

United’s summer recruitment has already begun, with left-sided attacker Memphis Depay signed up, leaving Ashley Young’s place in Louis van Gaal’s preferred 4-3-3 formation under serious threat, while Angel Di Maria is also expected to fare better in his second season in England, should he, as expected, remain at Old Trafford.

Radamel Falcao is no longer at the club and with the futures of Robin van Persie and Javier Hernandez yet to be decided, it appears likely that United will look to sign another attacker this summer. So while Mata may not be quite as “nailed on” as the likes of Sanchez, Hazard and Silva by the time the transfer window closes, it would be a surprise for him not to feature in the Dutchman’s regular starting line-up next season.

Speaking about the Spanish playmaker towards the end of last term, van Gaal was emphatic in his praise of the midfielder:

“I think Juan Mata is always one of my better players. Always. Now he is playing as a false right-winger and the combination with Herrera and Valencia gives him more opportunities. I was looking for balance and now I have found a position for him.”

Another caveat to Mata’s Fantasy appeal is the fact it appears he will start next term as the number one penalty taker, after netting United’s last spot-kick against Palace in Gameweek 36, although a miss in pre-season may change that, if van Gaal’s “penalty structure” remains in place. With a share of set-piece duties in his locker too, Mata has a real chance of returning to the form that racked up 162 and 212 FPL points in his two full seasons at Chelsea.

Mata ended the previous campaign valued at 8.5, so it seems unlikely that he will be priced any higher than last term’s original starting price of 9.0. Marouane Fellaini and Ander Herrera both notched six league goals last season and are expected to remain in the mid-price bracket, offering viable alternatives at a cheaper price, while both Depay and Di Maria should be valued similarly to Mata for the new campaign.

There will clearly be plenty of options for Fantasy managers to consider from United, least of all Wayne Rooney, but if Van Gaal continues with the 4-3-3 system, which looks likely following the signing of Depay, Mata’s role on the right could see him come into his own as a Fantasy asset.

United were the fourth highest scorers in the league last season with 62 goals accrued, so Fantasy owners may prefer to look to City, Chelsea and Arsenal for their “big hitters”. Certainly, Van Gaal’s side will need to improve their form on the road after scoring just 21 away goals last term – only two more than relegated QPR and almost half City’s tally of 39.

With further signings on the cards, though, Van Gaal is expected to close the 17-point gap to Chelsea considerably next season after a year of settling in. Should that be the case, an improved showing from Mata looks likely, which would catapult him well and truly back into our thoughts after a stop-start 18 months at the Theatre of Dreams.

Depends on price really. Id expect him to be 7-7.5..Prob better value to be found in the 5.5-6 bracket, for me anyway.

The way his season ended, i'd expect around 7.5 as well, which will be a shame. These FPL people are certainly no mugs

Really good option i think. Has that poacher's instinct of being the right position to take advantage of any loose balls in the box. His goal conversion rate from last season is also really good. Facing Spurs, Liverpool and Arsenal in the first 5 GWs is a challenging start to the season but those defences can be breached so a good shout. I am seriously considering him for my team, price permitting of course.

*could* - for some youngsters, it isn't worth the risk, considering the upheaval. Though you'd think a move to Holland would be easier than most foreign moves, considering the preponderance of English speakers over there.

There are plenty of young players from other countries taking risks like this, its just not happening for England and they are suffering for it. Too scared of the challenge

Oh yes, I was speaking specifically about British youngsters, not in general. I don't think it's the challenge that bothers them. It's about British culture. It's very isolationist. Very few kids emerge from school with a decent grip of European languages and culture and they go on holiday to these countries but stay in all-English resorts etc. There's a complete disengagement.

But its not just staying in their own city, its missing out on a massive opportunity to develop as a player at one of the biggest teams in Europe. Plenty of young players take risks and move abroad when the easier option is staying home. It just doesnt happen enough in England.

Benteke has more to his game than just someone to get in the end of crosses. Im not necessarily disagreeing with you but think he deserves more credit than he appears to be getting from people. When it comes down to it, having lost out on Bacca, id rather sign Benny than no one. He will have a lot of creativity behind him.

The main reason Mata was dropped last season was that LVG didn't like the balance of midfield. He complained about only having one right footed DM and a lack of physicality in there as well. That's why he didn't feel Mata would work in a central position and instead played him as a RW.

Next season though? If LVG is happier with the balance of midfield and Rooney is the first choice striker then there's a chance Mata could get game time as a #10 too, which would make him an even better FPL choice...

This is how I think they will line up but too attacking? Think Di Maria and Mata can interchange.

Defensive Mid Schneiderlin aka De Jong
Box to Box Mid Herrera aka Strootman
No. 10 Mid Di Maria/Mata aka Sneijder/Van Der Vaart

ADM's played in a midfield 3 for Real and played some of the best football of his career there. Whereas when Mata has played in a central midfield 3, he's not played well and LVG has complained about the lack of balance. ADM will play in a midfield 3 much better, even if it means Mata drops back to cover him when he surges forward.

No chance Di Maria plays in midfield, I think. Too reckless in possession for LVG's liking. More likely to continue to get played out wide, even though it isn't his best position. Mata, on the other hand, has a load of the attributes LVG apparently likes in a #10.

        1. I'm not convinced Depay will be a starter to begin with.
        2. I think ADM's best position is midfield but he really isn't what LVG looks for in a midfielder so I doubt we'll see him there.
        3. United could well sign more attackers so it's still quite up in the air.

Which striker though? A first choice player who will see Rooney pushed back deeper or someone to compete with Rooney for the CF role? The midfielder they sign could have repercussions too.

I like a few United players FPL wise but it's too early to say whose game time is most secure (bar Rooney).

Relevant to Sully's post and others - and does back up what I was saying:

LVG: “I think Juan Mata is always one of my better players,” he said. “Always. Now he is playing as a false right-winger and the combination with Herrera and Valencia gives him more opportunities. I was looking for balance and now I have found a position for him.”

There isn't any chance of him playing centrally anyway. United play with three true midfielders, Mata isn't a true midfielder.

      Herrera - Schneiderlin - Schweinsteiger/Gundogan
      di Maria/Mata - Rooney - Memphis

John Guidetti, that's how to firmly put yourself in the shop window.

Previously played (and played up) for ronko
Ronko did not want to resign this bad boy when he had the chance last summer?
Or were the terms not right?

Hopefully Mata's 8.5 and Rooney 10.0. I like their fixtures from an attacking perspective. I want Di Maria over Mata but he's unlikely to start the season after the Copa America.

What are the chances they get these prices iyo?

I think I may take a punt on the pig ISO Kun for the start of the season

      Mata 9.0
      Di Maria 9.5
      Rooney 10.5

Problem with this is that Mata hasn't been consistent enough to justify that kind of hefty investment as it will probably be at the expense of getting Hazard or Silva.

Mata maybe (not nailed on?) but Rooney will be 10.5 I'd guess, but you know more about Utd than I do.

See above. I think he's as nailed on as any of United's midfield.
