Moving Target

Scout Report – Gerard Deulofeu

Everton’s second maneuver in this summer’s transfer market finds a familiar face returning to Goodison Park, with Barcelona winger Gerard Deulofeu penning a three-year deal. The 21-year-old La Masia graduate reportedly turned down more lucrative offers to team up with Toffees boss Roberto Martinez once again, after spending the 2013/14 Premier League campaign on loan at Goodison Park.

Speaking to the club’s official site, Martinez confirmed that Everton have already acquired their two main targets – having earlier snapped up Tom Cleverley from Manchester United – before talking up the winger’s talents for the season ahead:

“It was always our intention to work extremely hard behind the scenes to get some really good business done early on during the transfer window. Our objective was to secure Tom and Gerard as quickly as we could and I’m really pleased this is exactly what we’ve done. We are getting an even more mature player now than he was a couple of seasons ago and a player who considers Everton as home. This is why we are incredibly excited to have him back here on a permanent basis and to encourage him to grow, develop and mature his enormous talent.”

The History

Born in Riudarenes (a Catalonian community), Deulofeu enrolled in Barcelona’s youth academy at just nine years old. Following eight years of training, the fleet-footed wide man earned his senior debut for the Barcelona B team in March 2011, before being called up to the full squad a month later.

Deulofeu made his first league outing for the full side in October 2011, coming on for Cesc Fabregas in a 5-0 drubbing of Mallorca. Aside from being afforded one further appearance in the 2012/13 campaign, the Spain international plied his trade with the second team, netting 18 times in the Segunda Division – boosting his tally to 27 goals and six assists in 68 appearances.

The next stop in Deulofeu’s development would be a season-long loan deal to Everton. He got off to the perfect start on Merseyside, scoring in a 2-1 home victory over Stevenage in the League Cup, though his first league strike took a little longer to materialise, arriving in a 4-0 win over Stoke City in late November. Although a hamstring injury in December sidelined him for five weeks, Deulofeu still managed to record three goals and four assists in just 900 minutes pitch time (spread out over 25 league outings) during his stay.

Deulofeu was granted a first-team berth at Barcelona in the following pre-season, ruling out a second loan spell at Everton. However, Barca boss Luis Enrique experienced a change in heart and accepted a one-year loan proposal from fellow La Liga outfit Sevilla. Deulofeu failed to nail down a starting berth with Los Rojiblancos and was subsequently named in Marca’s Worst Team of the Season, despite still managing to record one goal and six assists in 17 league outings. Indeed, Deulofeu served up nine assists across all competitions for Sevilla last season – no team-mate managed more.

Deulofeu has been a regular starter for Spain at every level of the youth system yet has only earned a single cap for the senior outfit. He was named as the Golden Player of the U19 Euros, having bagged two goals en route to the trophy.

The Prospects

It’s something of an understatement to suggest that competition for places is strong on the flanks for Everton. Whether Martinez chooses to roll out a 4-1-4-1, 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1 set-up, he has the likes of Leon Osman, Aiden McGeady, Kevin Mirallas, Steven Pienaar, Ross Barkley and Steven Naismith all offering options out wide. With reports also suggesting that Martinez could return to Tottenham to snap up Aaron Lennon on a permanent deal, there’s a great deal of uncertainty over his preferred starting XI ahead of the new campaign.

Although Deulofeu’s inability to earn regular starts at Sevilla would appear to run contrary to Martinez’s assertions, he did, regardless, post some impressive statistics. No Everton midfielder accrued more than three assists last term, yet the Spaniard notched six in just 780 La Liga minutes. Furthermore, he fashioned a chance for his team-mates on average every 55.7 minutes, which far outstrips any of the mainstays in the Toffees’ midfield, and could boost Romelu Lukaku’s points potential as the lone striker.

Given that – aside from Mirallas – no Everton midfielder scored more than two league goals last season, it’s obvious why Martinez is looking for new faces in this area. The fact that Deulofeu has already played under Martinez should render any settling-in period redundant and afford the new boy the chance to hit the ground running, though his classification may ultimately determine how we view his prospects. The Spaniard was listed as a forward in Fantasy Premier League last time around and a similar scenario would ensure that he remains off our radars, given that he’ll be utilised out wide by Martinez.

Although a relatively kind price is anticipated – around 5.5 to 6.5 – in order to arrive on our radars, Deulofeu needs to be listed as a midfielder and nail down a regular role for the Merseysiders.

Certainly, the opening schedule will allow us time to assess the lay of the land. After a kind opening home clash with Watford, Martinez’ men face all of last season’s top eight in addition to a trip to West Brom over the following nine matches, suggesting that most Fantasy managers will be more than willing to hold fire on Everton coverage until the fixtures smile kindly from Gameweek 11 onwards.

Love these transfers/rumours recently. In my mind I'm already having a fancy flair team made only of newcomers. In reality, I know I'm going to stick to sure value of established PL players. Because starting with too many newcomers is tried and true method of wrecking your season from the beginning.

Well said. I will probably have one or maybe two new players and they are unlikely to be premium choices.

If Cabaye joins Saints, I'm almost sure to have 3-4 newcomers. After all my statistical analysis, I really am a flair manager. But very probably my newcomers will not be the premiums either. I love to take that risky punt on someone decently priced.

Welcome to my team, Tabanou and Micah! 😉

I might stretch to 3. But I think people are getting way too carried away with signings like Depay and Firmino.

Sure, that's what I'm saying, and it applies to myself, as I think those are some sweet ass transfers. Exciting players, hard not to get them into my team.

I will talk reason to myself before the season starts and go with guys with actual FPL history. But right now my planned team just might have a defence of Mings, Tabanou, Prödl and Richards midfield of Firmino, Depay, Cabaye, Payet and Oscar (I know, he's not new, but he's the flair choice of the moment). And I love the look of that much more than I will love the look of the midfield I will end up with. 😉

Oh, Fer Fuchs sake, Fuchs in that defence too! He is the most appealing and most likely to flop of the new defenders.

yeah good point. young played well last season and LVG seems to like him. maybe depay will be eased into the pace of the prem ie when utd are 3 up against a team with 30 mins to go. still, he's just been voted player of year in Holland and top scorer from the wing and done well in the world cup so maybe if he shines in pre season, LVG will throw him straight in

If we had an easier game than Spurs I'd think he'd go straight in

            Schneiderlin Carrick
            Mata Herrera Young
            Rooney

Is how I'd expect the Spurs game to go, Depay and Di Maria to come in later on

Reed if a very talented young midfielder plays for southampton, ruben loftus cheek is the supremely composed chelski midfielder that maureen was giving a hard time to
Both very inexperienced but with potential

We may have a job convincing Chelsea to give us anyone but he would be a good addition, great potential. I cant say im familiar with Reed though. Some of the academy players will be home grown and may break through onto the first team in the next year or two, that may be the solution.

Still the galactico mindset which was useful for the first few years but citeh will now have to mature into a team that tolerates potential ,gives it game time and not just the ready made article

Not sure how big you are into citeh but both rekik and lopes should get some gametime in the coming season and they are homegrown status
Buying the 21 year old RB is positive as in addition to homegrown citeh now need to move on from their previous galactico purchasing policy

Yeah id be big into following them, am familiar with most of the EDS players. I dont think Rekik will stay cause Denayar is better and will be kept in that position, there isnt enough room for both. Lopes should be given a chance also. There was an article that Denayer, Lopes and the Nigerian forward would all be a part of the senior team next season. Hopefully true.
Yeah Id agree buying quality young players is the way forward. Thar RB is a good step in the right direction.

Reed is Soton's CM. Not bad, but I would like us to sign Ward Prowse. Promote Denayer and Lopes, already have Hart, Wright and Clichy.

I think Ward Prowse would be a good choice. Also maybe replace Cabarello with a home grown keeper. Hart plays like 90% of matches so having a home grown sub keeper would take another spot. Denayer and Lopes should be in the senior team next year. Both are good enough to be given a few matches.

Maybe too young just yet, he would improve playing regularly and wouldnt do that if he was promoted. A loan would be a better option for now I think.

£20m for JWP and £15m for Reed. Thanks. OR you could just invest more money in your academy and try bringing through your own youth. Much more sustainable. 😀

Reed is homegrown too and you're going mental for him 😉 Plus JWP work rate is good, I don't know where you've got that idea from about him. He needs time to develop, that's where you supporters of big teams are never patient so rarely appreciate your own youth 😀

Switching keepers was a very logical decision, it's the same as bringing on a specialised penalty taker. Very happy with Depay and Schneiderlin so far so can't complain.

didn't depay choose utd over PSG? utd will seriously challenge for the title this season, maybe even win it. sneiderlin will shore things up in midfield and going forward utd can compete with che, city and arse. last year was a transitional season for LVG. this season we will be ready. Liverpool on the other hand, although improving, will still only have the 5th best starting XI and that's where they will finish

LOL! 150 million last season and only finished 4th? If Sturridge had not been hurt, United would be watching the CL on TV. Rooney only had 14 goals and led United in goals. Where are the strikers? De Gea single handily kept United in games defensively last season. LVG is overrated.

Exactly 😆 Must have a short memory, or just chose to ignore that United had half the squad injured in the earlier stages of the season.

Just another Liverpool fan(?) playing the usual classic cards. If he genuinely believes United only finished in the CL positions because Daniel Sturridge is made of glass, rather than just being a much better team - then he must be one of the deluded ones...

"if sturridge had not been hurt" blah blah. if is a big word in football. I could say "if RVP was firing on all cylinders then utd would've finished higher, or if di maria had settled then we could've challenged for the title" etc etc. the fact is regardless of the improvements Liverpool are making, none of the top 4 managers would swap their squads for liverpools. as regards for the 150 mill spent, what about all the suarez dosh you wasted? face it liverpools biggest chance has been the last 2 seasons (citys ageing team, life after sir alex at utd, you having suarez and a fit suarez etc )and you've blown it.

falcoa isn't the same since his injury. he was poor at copa America and I don't think he will pull up any trees with Chelsea. the difference is Liverpool are in for clyne, ings, bogdan, milner etc che, utd, city, arsenal are linked with schweinsteiger, ramos, dani alves, de pay, Lloris, KDB, gundogan, bale, cech, pogba etc absolute world class ready made players. its irrelevant whether these top players go to the top 4 or not, whats important is they at least trying to get them. the players Liverpool will end up with are on a level below and that's why they will finish 5th

exactly. but we will get the better coleman and we've already got great number 10's. utd were in disarray last season; LVG joined up late, di maria and falcoa flopped, he couldn't get the right system etc and yet we still finished above Liverpool. utd simply will have learnt from all the mistakes of last year and will be far better this time round. can I just remind Liverpool fans in their last game they lost 6-1 to stoke. I don't think signing bogdan, ings and milner will turn that round. ok firmino might end up brilliant but even if he does, he'll end up in spain next summer. he'll use Liverpool as a stepping stone

            What blog?

Made a check on French press, and all there is on this is that the club chairman has reportedly turned down bigger bids since then and repeatedly stated that they do not need more money and are in no case selling their best players this summer. Two weeks ago player's agent said that they had turned down several very big contract offers from big European clubs because the player wants to stay at Lyon at least until next summer's EC as he wants to be sure to make the team.

So, I doubt there's is an ounce of truth in this. There was like month ago a report on Lyon and Lacazette turning Liverpool down and the price mentioned was the same. I suppose it is this rumour you are repeating, but back then Lyon chairman and player's agent both rubbished any thought that Lacazette would join Liverpool.

An old proverb says: “A watched pot never boils.” Anyone who’s bothered to test this proverb themselves knows the statement to be false; a pot placed on a hot stove will eventually boil, whether it’s watched or not.

But what if we modify the proverb? What if, instead, it says: “A watched pot never boils unless you watch it.” Stated more precisely, “A watched pot never boils unless it is watched.” Is this statement true or false?

    Good night fellas.

I think it boils down to "A watched pot doesn't never boil", which can be further simplified to "A watched pot boils either sometimes or always", so I would say it's true.

....But it also implies that if a pot never boils then it is an unwatched pot, which appears to be false.

So the statement can be split into two parts, one of which is true and the other false.

...But are we talking about the results of attempting to boil a particular pot once or about a number of attempts with different pots?

I had assumed that we were considering an unlimited number of attempts with an unlimited number of different pots, but if we were only considering one attempt with one pot then the implications could be "If the pot is watched then it will definitely boil" and "If it never boils then it isn't being watched", the first of which is now false.

Surely Schrödinger wouldn't have watched the pot - he would have left the kitchen and then popped back to check whether it had boiled a few minutes later.

But, according to "1066 And All That" :- "Watts Pots Never Boyle".

If I understand them correctly, both possibilities (of the pot boiling or not boiling) would have remained true until Schrödinger had checked what had happened to it.

Whereas Heisenberg would have watched the pot either boil or not boil, but would have been uncertain whether the result would have been the same if he had not watched it.

I'm fine with a Gomez type signing - we should be investing into very young English players to help develop youth systems.

Ings and Bogdan however, are very underwhelming signings. And very average. Ings wasn't free either, has a tribunal fee.

All free players typically have a signing on fee anyway, I'd imagine Milner cost us a pretty penny too. A proper keeper should have been signed, let Mig compete with him.

I think Migs has done enough to secure the number 1 spot for a year. Personally would have bought a young, promising keeper to keep Migs on his toes. Bolton's 2nd choice keeper provides little competition to Mignolet.

If you want a hugely talented young goalkeeper that could've challenged Mignolet for the position, then the Bundesliga is what you're looking for. Germany are head and shoulders above any nation at the moment in producing talented goalkeepers.

Timo Horn and Loris Karius are the standouts imo, wouldn't cost a huge sum like Leno would either...

Not sure about the "wouldn't cost a huge sum" part. PSG is rumoured to be buying Trapp, Frankfurt is asking €10M (the guy has a €9M release clause though). Rumoured salary also €5M/year. That's €2M/year more than what Sirigu makes at PSG and €0.5M-€1M more than what Lloris makes at Spurs.

Not sure if there's anything true in this, though. The rumour is strong in Germany (Frankfurt based paper), but non-existent in France and it makes no sense. he's a very good, underrated keeper, and in that sense he could be a good finding for some club, I don't think PSG is that club (and if they have to pay €10M for GK, he's not a finding anymore). Trapp has last played for a team that plays completely different football than PSG and I don't see anything in him that would assure me that he's an upgrade from Sirigu. Rather he looks like similar with lesser credentials and I doubt Sirigu moving for more than €10M either. In addition, PSG is under FFP restriction and can only buy one player. GK is not probably the priority.

Well I wouldn't call €9/10m a huge sum, I'd say that's about right for Trapp. Anyway, I was talking about 15m when I said 'high sum' - roughly about what Leno would go for I reckon.

And I don't believe Kevin Trapp (who is also talented) could possibly earn €2m/year more than what Sirigu earns...

€9M is big money for a GK, let alone a GK who is not an international one and has no CL experience. GK's don't move for big money usually.

I don't believe that rumour to have any truth in it either. It seems very illogical.

I like Mig, but he lacks what top keepers have, command of his area, knows when exactly to punch or catch, strong in the air and doesn't make mistakes under pressure, and his distribution is awful. You wouldn't say over the course of a season he'd win us 10+ points? If we have ambition we need a top keeper at some point, granted that is easier said than done.

Even if Milner had a 5m signing on fee, it's still a decent signing. Simply because he is better than what we have (Allen, Lucas and Gerrard leaving)

Ings will end up costing 6. We have Balotelli Borini and Lambert on the bench. We best hope to get at least 6 out of Borini and Lambert or Ings makes little financial sense. May be hard to shift Balotelli so I expect him to stay or be loaned out.

BR has played a stormer getting Milner and Clyne..proven players in a league that spits out seemingly great foreign players for fun.
Firmino remains to be proven....or spat out...

Would you go for proven or unproven ?..genuine question...

I'm no huge BR fan but I am happy he has managed to get Clyne and Milner playing for us

It depends mate, I always want 4 things in a player: quality, talent, potential and value for money. Those things are often found in players abroad, who are 'unproven'. Coutinho, Sakho, Can for examples.

Liverpool often overspend on players from the PL because they're 'Proven'. We've only overspent on an overseas player occasionally and less often than inside the PL

To be fair you could call Lambert and Lallana proven in the Premier League and signing them didn't work out too well. I really like the signings of Milner and Clyne though and hope they are a marked improvement on the players currently playing in those positions

Agreed...look at Torres...No player was more proven than him, and then he bombed.
On balance though I think a much smaller % of proven players fail than players from outside the league.

Torres only bombed at Chelsea, and in his last year at Liverpool when he was past his best and wanted a move. Before that he did great for Liverpool.

It was Spain that ruined him in my opinion. He used to come back from international matches injured or tired when he had been fine beforehand.

I said above we should be looking at 4 things when signing players. (Quality, talent, potential, VFM). Lallana offers talent and Lambert offers nothing. 'Proven' players are often over valued. There are some bargains though, Clyne offers talent, potential, VFM and Milner offers quality, VFM.

We have a manager who doesn't believe in DM's, and who thinks he doesn't need a defensive coach to help him. So we'll only get attacking beneficiaries from Clyne and Moreno.

Yeah, just pick 5 (one from each league / category) within the £50m salary cap and that same combo stays for the season. First team is free, then there's a cost for other teams if you want to add more (£5 each). But considering there's a minumum of £1,000 up for grabs it's pretty reasonable.

For me, teams like QPR, Newcastle, Rangers and Wycombe appear under priced to me.

Points are scored through the season with 3pts for a league match win, 1pt for a league draw, and there are bonus points for wins in cup matches (like the FA Cup). It's a pretty neat concept.

If you go to purchase some other FF teams I think you can donate to Wellington Pheonix if you're into them. Otherwise check out the donation list which shows the clubs that are receiving the most donations at the moment from their fans paying and donating in both the Sweepstake and Predictor games.

Glad you like it. It's a neat little concept.

There are a couple of Adelaide United fans donating there, raised £50 from just a couple of them playing. Seems like this website pays the donations once £500 is reached, but it is achievable for those regularly playing the Predictor and Sweepstake game. Every little bit helps. Just look at what Carlisle Utd have achieved (£2,200) in donations in the short span of this website being up and running.

Played the sun game a couple of years back and was slightly disappointed by the lack of control you have over your team. Only a few transfers a year, forced to play 4 at the back, no assists etc....

Good side game but a lot of luck required to win, hopefully these 'changes' make it easier for us hardcore players.

The media are pretty clueless on United transfers these days. Ever since van Gaal came in the media have been second guessing every move with very limited success. Vidal signed for United at least 5 times last summer, as did Benatia and Gundogan was 'all but confirmed' earlier this season. Clueless. I don't think anyone knows if Woodward & van Gaal were in for him or not.

Most of the stuff you see online is just clickbait, every site wants to maximise their visitor numbers and what better way than to entice football fans during the off season by linking them with a top profile signing?

The true business will begin next month and you can guarantee a few sporadic United signings.

Indeed, it depends on whether you think business should be allowed year round or at set times, personally I think it wouldn't make much difference, but the problem is clubs would have to deal with bids for their players at inconvenient times. :/

I'm pretty sure it's all fair game regards transfers after the final match of the season in the countries involved has finished. Just given the window to make it definite for every country with leagues operating at different times of year etc

The good thing is is that clubs don't have to engage in negotiations if they don't wish too, fair enough after the season ends though.

I don't think its possible to restrict 'negotiations' to a window.

Window's are necessary though because it would be silly to bring in players at just any time of the year.

Just a question for you all - how much does the idea of coverage for a variety of teams play into your FPL strategies? When picking your starting team for the very first gameweek, to what extent do you want lots of representation from different teams, of course controlling for quality?

Just as an example, I feel like last year my choices narrowed over the course of the season so I was working with lots of players from specific teams (Arsenal, Chelsea, even Crystal Palace) but I felt like I just had no idea what to do with other teams whose players I was less familiar with but were still respectable (Man Utd, Swansea).

Are you wary of starting out the season without enough variety?

    1. Eze Really?
      • 9 Years

People tend to "spread the wealth" to avoid a disastrous opener. The likes of Chelsea and Arsenal had 5/6 players in FPL sides at the season end. Too dangerous to start like that though.

Anyone want to comment on other league strength.

Lots of transfer talk and actual transfers and then people commenting how weak that league may be BUT obviously a lot depends on the player himself.

Anyway, what are the relative strengths, versus the premier league, of the overseas leagues?

    The main ones being:-

    Spain
    Germany
    Holland
    France
    Portugal
    Italian
    Scottish
    Others?

Not having watched much football I can't really judge but there are knowledgeable people on here that may be much better placed. I guess a decimal of the Prem would be good for each.

    So
    Spain 0.9
    Germany 0.85
    Holland 0.7
    France 0.8
    Portugal 0.7
    Etc

Anyone have lots of knowledge about any of these?

I think the English league is top given that 4 teams have a very strong chance of winning each year; Spain is usually only Real or Barca, while the other top leagues tend to be processionsfor 1 team.

        - and are usually threatened well by 2 or 3 others also. Plus, there is the relegation bear trap at the end of the Season. One of the major teams always comes a cropper.

All this is true. What would be a good would be to tally import success from the leagues they arrived.

Hard job mind. I think Spain might come out on top but there is a lot of incoming a from there and less from others. I wonder how France would fare.

    The place is dead!
    Any thoughts?
    Goalkeepers:
Shot stoppers: De Gea, Lloris, Ospina, Adrian
Presence: Courtois, Czech, Lorris, Bergovic, Hart.
    Eccentricity: De Gea, Ospina.
Consistency: De Gea, lloris, Bergovic, Courtois Czech.

Apart from Eccentricity, which is a negative, Lloris is the only one to tick all the boxes. De Gea and Courtois will but if you want the finished product, in my view, Lloris is the best Keeper in the league.

Hard to know, the league has a lot if the Worlds top keepers (aside from the German keeper). I like the taller keepers (6'4' plus) for presence and feel Cech and Hart are top at present. Hart often has little to do but on occasion has been brilliant (eg vs Messi in Champions League) so I'd pick him.

His form seems to be the one thing that puts me off him. It does go up and down a bit. I have never seen Lloris have a bad game, but I don't watch Spurs play a full game that often. I do think we are influenced by highlights which will impact on someone's opinion more when looking at keepers. Stats are not a good pointer for me also.

I think Hart is over that form blip from last year when Panti (no mean keeper) deputised. Lloris had a bit of a drip in form the season just gone when his team were diabolical at the back. Loads of good keepers in the league - look at how good Fabianski was and Ospina yet both ultimately binned by Wenger for Cech.

I'm not religious but ever since Wenger met the pope last year (and his lietenants signed Welbeck while he was away), he's starting to make better decisions. Did the pope reveal the 3rd secret of Fatima, namely play Walcott upfront and the league is his.

I presume you are talking about De Gea. Only IMO. Had a great season but still in my mind abour season's past. He still does not tick the box as a presence (defence coordinator)

Lloris, actually. And yes, I agree that he is the best. 😀

He may be a real hit at United. If he can source his inner Grobbelaar! 😉

I know Bruce well enough for a chat in a pub. One thing he is is a character!

I was looking as eccentricity on the downside.

If you had to stand behind two hairy-arsed centre backs with nay brains, wouldn't you be eccentric? 😉

Big squad that Doos, any potential Harry Kanes in there we should watch out for. Interesting also to see if Bilic has a replacement centre half for the useless Collins.

        47. Not yet - it is too early to judge. Most of them have shown promise - West Ham have a tendency to chuck kids out the door early.

Ogbonna is where we are waving the cash ... has been going for a few weeks now. Possible.

Good, I'm getting Cresswell. If Bilic clicks with the team, I see them finishing above Spurs who are muck!

But - be careful. We now have Payet, which means that Cresswell will be jocked off many free kicks.
