Scout Report – Jose Holebas

On July 2, Watford announced the signing of left-back Jose Holebas on a three year-deal from Roma. The Greek defender – who started 23 matches for i Giallorossi last term as they finished second in the Serie A – became the fourth new recruit at Vicarage Road this summer, following the capture of centre-back Sebastian Prodl, keeper Giedrius Arlauskis and forward Matej Vydra.

When the move was announced, it seemed that Holebas – as explained in an interview with the Italian press – was caught unaware after both clubs went public with the deal without his knowledge:

“They arranged my transfer without asking me. I haven’t signed anything yet, I have to see the contract first. I don’t know why this has happened, I know that both Roma and Watford announced my transfer, but they’d have to talk to my representatives first. I never said I wanted to leave Roma. I’ll sign after first agreeing to the terms of the contract. I can’t understand what’s happened, I came back from my holiday in Dubai, and everyone started telling me my transfer had been officially announced. I’m in Germany right now, how could I sign a contract?”

The History

After learning his trade at four local non-professional youth teams, the Germany-born Holebas teamed up with sixth division side Viktoria Kahl. Operating as striker, Holebas netted 15 goals in 33 outings, prompting a move to second division side 1860 Munich prior to the start of the 2006/7 campaign.

Holebas made his breakthrough into the senior side the following term, producing two goals and three assists across 19 appearances. At this point, the Greece international was still being deployed as a forward (either on the left flank or in a central berth) and this would continue until manager Ewald Linen shifted him to left wing-back at the start of the 2009/10 campaign. In all, Holebas amassed seven goals and eight assists in 74 league outings for 1860 Munich.

Holebas then followed Lienen to Olympiakos in the summer of 2010. Despite flattering to deceive in the first half of the season, the versatile wide man established himself as a regular starter and went on to tally one goal and an assist in 24 appearances. Over the course of his four-season spell with The Legend, Holebas chalked up nine goals and 17 assists, with his attacking output in the 2012/13 campaign (four goals and eight assists) sticking out as a highlight.

Roma snapped Holebas up on a three-year deal in August 2014, placing him in direct competition with ex-Chelsea left-back Ashley Cole. Ultimately, Holebas came out on top in this contest, earning 23 starts (one goal and assist) to Cole’s 11.

By way of being born in Germany and possessing a Greek-Uruguayan heritage, Holebas was eligible to play for all three nations but chose to represent Greece on the international stage. He featured in all of Greece’s match-ups in the 2014 World Cup and to date has recorded one goal and three assists in 27 appearances.

The Prospects

Holebas has yet to start in Watford’s two pre-season matches so far, which have seen new boss Quique Sanchez Flores roll out a 4-2-3-1 formation, with Ikechi Anya fielded at left-back. The Greek international was afforded 15 minutes off the bench in the weekend draw with Wimbledon and is expected to nail down a regular role once he improves his match sharpness.

Looking at his attacking numbers from last season, Holebas produced a total of 19 attempts on goal and 19 key passes in Serie A – an average of 108.1 minutes for both. Compared to Premier League defenders with 1000+ minutes in 2014/15, that places him ninth (Danny Rose was eighth) for shots and sixteenth (Aaron Cresswell was fifteenth) for key passes.

Like the rest of the Hornets’ likely defensive starters, Holebas comes in at 4.5 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game. A change in the BPS scoring, which is expected to favour central defenders, may persuade some to consider new boy Sebastian Prodl or Gabriele Angell instead, though. The six foot six inches-tall Prodl netted three times in 19 starts in the previous Bundesliga campaign – consequently averaging a goal at a greater frequency (every 581 minutes) than all Premier League defenders bar Chris Smalling (every 495 minutes) last term. Angell, who’s recorded nine goals (including two braces) and seven assists in his two seasons with the Hornets, fashioned the most shots (24) of any Watford defender last time out. Meanwhile, first choice right-back, Juan Carlos Paredes, chalked up four assists, yet his limited goal threat somewhat tempers our appeal.

Elsewhere at the back, the Hertfordshire club’s recruitment of Steaua Bucharest shot-stopper Giedrius Arlauskis places uncertainty over Heurelho Gomes’ starting berth for the season ahead. Watford conceded the fifth lowest number of goals (50) last season – though given they managed just 15 clean sheets (eight at home) – whoever wins the number one jersey may have to rely on save points to boost their Fantasy potential.

Watford embark on a fairly difficult start to the new campaign which may ultimately deter initial investors. Trips to Everton and United in the first five, allied with visits from West Brom, Southampton and Swansea, suggest it’s perhaps best to hold fire with our plans until the schedule takes a turn for the better around Gameweek 6.

Nonetheless, Flores’ side do rotate home and away with Bournemouth over the 38 Gameweeks and with a decent run (AVL, WBA, SOT, LEI, SWA, SUN, CPL, WAT) over the opening eight rounds of fixtures, they could appeal to those looking for a 9.0 defensive pairing in their five-man backlines.

If de Bruyne signed for City (as per rumours), what price do you think he will come in at? 8.5/9m? Could have another Arsenal midfield type situation, with Yaya/Sterling/Silva/KdB as potential options.

      I'd say £9m if it's a £30m+ transfer. £8.5m if it's between £20m-£30m.

        Aguero
        Silva - KdB - Sterling
        Fernandinho - Yaya

I think he'll be a key player for us this year, he is excellent in my opinion, just struggled with injuries last year, and found it difficult to make an impact in a bad team at times. Still from an FPL perspective the Liverpool midfield could be a minefield the first few weeks bar maybe the deeper players Milner/Hendo.

He's a great pick...pro rata his touches in the box up in respect of appearances and he's right up there. 200 is the high water mark to make them stand out picks from open play.

Hmm . . . Not sure about gems . . . Picking the midfield is really tough. Henderson looks an absolute no brainer. Hoping Deulofeu could be good for it, and taking a chance on Brunt. How about you?

The midfield is killing me. Too many options that I want to go for. Cabaye looks an absolute steal. Think Deeney will be involved in my team too.

No idea what strategy to have in defence either. Toying between a lot of options.

Exactly - so many options! Deeney's in my team, as is Bojan, need those cheapies to counter Aguero!

Defensively I just want to have starters! Taking fewer risks on 4m players this year, it amazed me that I struggled to field 3 defenders at points last season (Kaboul and Lovren largely to blame!).

It's the bit I don't like...Lovren looked for all the world a good pick (as he was at Soton) and then you end up stuck with him...You picked well on available knowledge and the events change,

Yeah - I was lucky to have got the essentials right with Sanchez and Aguero. Anyone who missed out on them was fighting a losing battle from GW5 onwards, and I can see the game would quickly have lost interest for them.

        Eriksen 8.5 - 162
        Chadli 7- 160

It looks like Chadli is the better pick, im a spurs season ticket holder and Eriksen blows hot and cold.

Vorm is a good pick short-term but would have to be transferred out early on. Yoshida will have limited game time as Southampton will buy a replacement for Toby. Baker won't play either. Very strong midfield but Giroud and Gabby a risks upfront as they blow hot and cold and aren't guaranteed to start.

Thanks for the advice Preno. Though Yoshida got a lot of gametime even with Toby around last season and when Saints had all defenders available; can we be sure that Koeman doesn't see him in his starting XI?

Can't guarantee for certain but I would consider Yoshida to be the 3rd choice CB for them this season. Might be worth following their transfer developments and pre-season selections though.

Are Walcott and Giroud direct competitors or can they both play? I want Walcott in my team but only if he can nail down a first team spot

I was just spending a little time rereading some of the close season articles looking for a particular one about Villa last year and it mad me wonder rather than just repeatedly hitting older posts is there or could there be a page which has a more concise overview for older articles which means you don't have to look at so many pages? At this time of year when there are quite a lot of new players and teams coming in to the league it could be useful.

I was just looking at Grealish's potential for 5.5. What do you think. I know he has his off field issues but I remembered an article about his underlying stats which I found eventually. How far do you think he will progress this season?

He was very impressive I think he is a great prospect. There will likely be come rotation with Sinclair/Agbonlahor offering fairly strong competition. I think for 5.5 he is a bit of a risk and it may be better to wait and see what happens.

Whether Grealish is a good pick will come down to how Villa play mainly. If Benteke is sold we are ruined.

Any statistics site where I can get a goals & assists breakdown game by game for each player?

Specifically interested in checking out Hazard's stats in the opening few games for the last few seasons... see if there's anything to back up this slow-starter label he's been given.

It's rubbish...I've had Hazard for three seasons solid and it was only the last one that he started slowly.

Did he really, .then I apologise...I really don't recall him being that bad. It's a wonder I kept him.

No need for apologies at all because I think you might be right (and you're talking to the guy who convinces himself Cissé is a good pick every damn season). It's more a consistency issue, I think his returns can become more predictable over the season.

Which is fair. It's funny, I was always of the opposite opinion, that he does start very slow, but his start to 2012/13 he picked up something like 2/3 goals and 6 assists in 3 matches. So now I have some serious pondering to do.

Not really to be honest, but in your defence the f following 6 matches (7-12) he notched 3 goals and 3 assists. One other thing, it could be possible that he picked up an extra assist our two in FPL that isn't logged here, different places have different definitions!

Exactly what I was looking for mate - Thanks for that 🙂

On a side note, if someone says they scored once in the first six, you can bet your life they scored in the seventh :D. Three goals + two assists in 8 isn't terrible. But yeah, he started slowly that year for sure.

2012-13 he had six(!) assists and one goal in three, then blanked for three. Excellent start.

2014-15 = 1 goal + 1 assist in first three. Not exactly dire.

            No problem at all!

Haha that's very true, manipulating to suit an argument. I tend to approach players 5 weeks at a time or so, so he fell neatly into the category. But as you say 2012/2013 dispels the myth. My own feeling is that his returns become more predictable and consistent as the season wears on, buy I'll have to look into that tomorrow!

Could I have some advice on this team please?

    Butland Myhill

    Rooney giroud Defoe

    1. ronmadpirlo

Ditch Myhill as Foster will be back in October and you won't want to waste a transfer on him. Sure you have the WC but better keep your options open. Rest of team looks good but I wouldn't have Defoe

    2. PRENO
      • 11 Years
      8 years, 11 months ago

Myhill will be replaced by Foster when he returns from injury so he will need to be transferred out early on. No real problems with the defence. Decent midfield but I consider mane to be a bit of a risk as he is not a guaranteed starter for the Saints but he could prove to be an effective differential. Think Giroud and Defoe are weak choices in attack, definitely consider other alternatives!

Thoughts on this team for GW1

    Pants (Hamer)
    Azpi Huth Targett (Clyne, Williams)
    Walcott Mata Bolasie Mane (Wanyama)
    Costa Rooney Wilson

2.5itb which allows me for GW2/3/4 to move players

    Walcott >> Hazard or
    Costa/Rooney >>Kun or
    Wilson>> 8mill
    Bolasie >> Fab or
    Mane >>Silva

Or does this set me up to fail ?

I just had a quick look at Ivan's history in the opening games for the last few seasons. Impressive to say the least.

2014-15: 2 goals + 1 assist in first three (then blanked offensively for next 16)
2013-14: 1 goal + 0 assists in first three (then blanked for 20)
    2012-13: 2 goals + 0 assists in first 3

Any rational explanation why a player should start so strongly?
