Scout Report – Jose Holebas

On July 2, Watford announced the signing of left-back Jose Holebas on a three year-deal from Roma. The Greek defender – who started 23 matches for i Giallorossi last term as they finished second in the Serie A – became the fourth new recruit at Vicarage Road this summer, following the capture of centre-back Sebastian Prodl, keeper Giedrius Arlauskis and forward Matej Vydra.

When the move was announced, it seemed that Holebas – as explained in an interview with the Italian press – was caught unaware after both clubs went public with the deal without his knowledge:

“They arranged my transfer without asking me. I haven’t signed anything yet, I have to see the contract first. I don’t know why this has happened, I know that both Roma and Watford announced my transfer, but they’d have to talk to my representatives first. I never said I wanted to leave Roma. I’ll sign after first agreeing to the terms of the contract. I can’t understand what’s happened, I came back from my holiday in Dubai, and everyone started telling me my transfer had been officially announced. I’m in Germany right now, how could I sign a contract?”

The History

After learning his trade at four local non-professional youth teams, the Germany-born Holebas teamed up with sixth division side Viktoria Kahl. Operating as striker, Holebas netted 15 goals in 33 outings, prompting a move to second division side 1860 Munich prior to the start of the 2006/7 campaign.

Holebas made his breakthrough into the senior side the following term, producing two goals and three assists across 19 appearances. At this point, the Greece international was still being deployed as a forward (either on the left flank or in a central berth) and this would continue until manager Ewald Linen shifted him to left wing-back at the start of the 2009/10 campaign. In all, Holebas amassed seven goals and eight assists in 74 league outings for 1860 Munich.

Holebas then followed Lienen to Olympiakos in the summer of 2010. Despite flattering to deceive in the first half of the season, the versatile wide man established himself as a regular starter and went on to tally one goal and an assist in 24 appearances. Over the course of his four-season spell with The Legend, Holebas chalked up nine goals and 17 assists, with his attacking output in the 2012/13 campaign (four goals and eight assists) sticking out as a highlight.

Roma snapped Holebas up on a three-year deal in August 2014, placing him in direct competition with ex-Chelsea left-back Ashley Cole. Ultimately, Holebas came out on top in this contest, earning 23 starts (one goal and assist) to Cole’s 11.

By way of being born in Germany and possessing a Greek-Uruguayan heritage, Holebas was eligible to play for all three nations but chose to represent Greece on the international stage. He featured in all of Greece’s match-ups in the 2014 World Cup and to date has recorded one goal and three assists in 27 appearances.

The Prospects

Holebas has yet to start in Watford’s two pre-season matches so far, which have seen new boss Quique Sanchez Flores roll out a 4-2-3-1 formation, with Ikechi Anya fielded at left-back. The Greek international was afforded 15 minutes off the bench in the weekend draw with Wimbledon and is expected to nail down a regular role once he improves his match sharpness.

Looking at his attacking numbers from last season, Holebas produced a total of 19 attempts on goal and 19 key passes in Serie A – an average of 108.1 minutes for both. Compared to Premier League defenders with 1000+ minutes in 2014/15, that places him ninth (Danny Rose was eighth) for shots and sixteenth (Aaron Cresswell was fifteenth) for key passes.

Like the rest of the Hornets’ likely defensive starters, Holebas comes in at 4.5 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game. A change in the BPS scoring, which is expected to favour central defenders, may persuade some to consider new boy Sebastian Prodl or Gabriele Angell instead, though. The six foot six inches-tall Prodl netted three times in 19 starts in the previous Bundesliga campaign – consequently averaging a goal at a greater frequency (every 581 minutes) than all Premier League defenders bar Chris Smalling (every 495 minutes) last term. Angell, who’s recorded nine goals (including two braces) and seven assists in his two seasons with the Hornets, fashioned the most shots (24) of any Watford defender last time out. Meanwhile, first choice right-back, Juan Carlos Paredes, chalked up four assists, yet his limited goal threat somewhat tempers our appeal.

Elsewhere at the back, the Hertfordshire club’s recruitment of Steaua Bucharest shot-stopper Giedrius Arlauskis places uncertainty over Heurelho Gomes’ starting berth for the season ahead. Watford conceded the fifth lowest number of goals (50) last season – though given they managed just 15 clean sheets (eight at home) – whoever wins the number one jersey may have to rely on save points to boost their Fantasy potential.

Watford embark on a fairly difficult start to the new campaign which may ultimately deter initial investors. Trips to Everton and United in the first five, allied with visits from West Brom, Southampton and Swansea, suggest it’s perhaps best to hold fire with our plans until the schedule takes a turn for the better around Gameweek 6.

Nonetheless, Flores’ side do rotate home and away with Bournemouth over the 38 Gameweeks and with a decent run (AVL, WBA, SOT, LEI, SWA, SUN, CPL, WAT) over the opening eight rounds of fixtures, they could appeal to those looking for a 9.0 defensive pairing in their five-man backlines.

      I'm currently on B Walcott

It's Hazards ownership that's the worry however after first home game v Swans two away games v Man C and WBA I think I'd get better value from the Matas Walcott Mane

Interesting. I'm leaning towards A simply due to the extra captaincy option.

Best Forward £8-9m? I'm not really interested in Kane. Who should I drop Deulofeu for post GW1? That Deulofeu question is more asking for who do people think will be a bargain or good value in that price range (£6.5m and below) over the course of the season.

I think Lukaku is good in one area that is missed. Assists. Joint top 5th for forwards, Benteke in contrast is poor for assists. That's why he's a beast on his day.

Lukaku has never had penalties, but now he does. If Everton play like we know they can, he will up there in points.

      A: Henderson Lukaku Rooney
      B: Ritchie Sakho Aguero
C: Start with 'A' and get to B in transfers by gw4

Would be much easier to just start with 'B' but Lukaku and Rooney are both gw1 captaincy contenders, so leaning towards 'C' but will be wasting transfers and probably a hit elsewhere too

I'm sold on my defence - rotation works well till GW10 Targett would just become bench fodder after 2 GWs

I'm sold on the front 3 for this start - captain picks on Costa GW1 Rooney GW2/3

Midfield as always a minefield - I'm sold on Walcott and Mane which leaves

Bolasie and Silva 16.5mill any other options?

Matt Le God. You advised me to get a big money striker from Aguero, Rooney or Costa on basis I had few captain options.

Am I the only one thinking its utter madness to own Rooney at 10.5 when Kane is 9.5? Even if both were the same price, I'd take Kane.

I'd say Kane is a better option than Costa too. Far more captainable than both of them as he hits massive scores more regularly. I get the impression FPL price tags influence opinions.

Anyone else totally uninterested in Costa and Rooney? I've not even considered either. For me, Rooney is well past prime and Costa not worth having if you have Hazard. Especially if Falcao gets some game time.

If Utd don't get a first class striker in then Rooney will be the first name in my squad. Kane needs to prove that he's not got second season syndrome, which looks possible after his last 6 weeks.

With a player so young I doubt he will. I see signs of a new Shearer in his ability to score goals. In any sport, age is a huge factor. After a certain point players just cant replicate old form. I think thats Rooney nowadays. Kane is only going to improve in my view

Not sure I agree with that. Experience is a bigger factor than age, up until the point where the body starts to slow. That's not happened with Rooney yet.

I certainly don't rate Rooney as highly as some people do, but I don't think he can be overlooked if he's playing striker in front of a pretty impressive midfield. As the squads stand, I'd be backing Rooney to make it to 10 goals before Kane.

Yeah Rooney has lost pace, but I meant it more as a phrase than literally. He is still capable of getting around the pitch whereas someone like RvP was clearly losing it. Rooney's not at that stage yet.

The reason he no longer leads the line for man utd or england is he is past prime and not up to it now. They will sign a striker and he will play wherever needed again

Then if Man U to sign a forward I'd be removing Rooney from my team, hope United buy Kane he'd be a steal @ 9.5 at United 🙂

        Rooney

Kane has had one hot streak in the premier league. Then he showed that he is a form striker just like the rest, not many in the entire game are form proof. The key is to get him when he is about to score 6 in 5 games...just before a patch of form. Stats are your friend. His ability to score of course depends on Tottenham's midfield creativity which at the end of last season was just depressing to watch.

Rooney is proven beyond doubt as a top goalscorer, but he also has problems with form. But just think of that midfield behind him now...

Or alongside him? I would worry others will get the goals allowing rooney to be less involved. With Spurs, its kinda Kane or no one

Need some advice from FFS. A few of my friends and I are planning on playing a fantasy game this season where we select players from EPL, La Liga, Bundesliga and The CL. Scoring is similar to FPL(minus the chips and baps).
Players will be chosen by auction system(something like a crude version of fantrax) Each team needs 25 players. This is just for fun.

      Question.
Is it prudent to choose players who are nailed on and play in CL and Europa because they are likely to play more games? Or are players like Wilson and Deeney also probable picks. Who could perform like Austin did but play lesser games in a season(bad example I know, but I got nothing else

Sounds interesting. If you've got that many leagues to pick from, then surely you don't need to rummage around with Bournemouth and Watford.

That's what I'm thinking too. Choose players who'll play 50+ games a season and have decent fantasy prospect.

Can you make transfers? Some leagues have winter breaks. You could transfer out breaking players and rack up some extra matches.

Look to leagues that have high scoring games and prolific strikers like Spanish and Dutch I would say. Also I agree, players that play more games seem a good bet.

36 games last season. Back in the national team. 5m for a fairly attacking midfielder. Might assist the assister more often than not but a decent 5m pick if he'll be nailed-on.

He'll start while Aguero is given extended rest following Copa. After that though he's def one to watch cuz he's starting alongside Aguero he's a real bargain. I personally think the team will play better with both of them on the pitch, he didn't have enough time to settle in the team last season.

So does anyone have any decent fantasy games for the rest of the European league? I play the UEFA ones for UCL and UEL, but do the other leagues (Bundesliga, La Liga, Serie A, Ligue 1, and why not Eredivisie or Portuguese league) have official or good games? If yes, please do tell.

Morning all, been trying to create an 'Aguero team' just in case he makes the first week.

      Mingloet/ 4.0
      Azpi/ Williams/ Huth/Oshea/ Francis
      Wanyama/ Ki/ Depay/ Fabregas/Ozil
      Costa/Aguero/ Wilson

Players may change(Mingolet, Depay) but question is, is this price spread do -able? Is the team too weak if so much cash invested in Aguero and Costa?

I'm sorry but it seems foolish to me to say you'd have Kane if he was on a different team, a lot of the appeal of Kane for those considering him is that he's by far the main option at his current, relatively free-scoring club, put him in say Manchester United where he might have to play second or third fiddle and I just can't see him being as much of an option for fpl

Azpi Cedric Morgan Coates Saylor (pending)

            Hazard Depay* Walcott Mane

            Costa Sakho Benteke

Mane for the early fixtures to be removed to fund Costa to Aguero. Dpeay Im not so sure about yet. Originally stuck him in cos there was talks of him playing up front. Walcott in for the early fixtures too. Looking at a probably Wc in GW4

I just am not sure there is much of a difference between the 5.5 keepers and the 5's so I would rather keep the cash in my pocket. Ultimately I will be doing 2 x 4.5's myself I think as I like 2 starters.

I was planning going with a 4.5 Keeper Combo..but then we have to use 1 of our WC before the first half of the season I thought...Hart will get more CS points..don't you think?

From Chelsea get either Ivan / Terry...they only make sense...

United Defenders are also for 5.5 and so is De Gea...but the nailed on defender from City are worth 6...rest other 5.5m defenders from City have rotation risk...so Hart is a good 5.5m option from City..

Staying away til I know more. Remember Burnley didnt score a goal in their first 4 games last year. Seems a lot more probable to get a dud than the next Austin

Even Austin had a slow start, albeit because he missed a penalty so a bit unlucky

Almost everyone has Ritchie in their teams

I will not spend more than minimum budget on a prooted player initially. Not even Austin did the business right at the beginning of the season. It just takes a little time to adjust and there are always some who don't. Bench and 4th midfielders at a push only. Certainly not a forward.

That certainly been the recent history. I may still take the Atsu / Ritchie 4th mf option though as need the funds as patterns are there to be broken

Alright another draft while trying to avoid a template team....

      Courtois
      Wollscheid Bassong Mertesacker
      Bolasie Hazard Schneiderlin Ritchie
      Aguero Kane Costa

      Hamer Matthews Targett Wanyama

I dont really fancy Schneiderlin. He's not prolific and isnt even assured gametime with Carrick and Sweinsteiger there

wait till GW7 to draft in CP players...Schneiderlin might not be nailed on...Rest looks good..Bench is weak..I think just go for one of Hazard / Costa
