Moving Target

Moving Target – Claudio Ranieri

Earlier this month, Leicester City appointed former Monaco and Chelsea manager Claudio Ranieri on a three-year deal, following the dismissal of Nigel Pearson. The Italian returns to the Premier League for the first time since being relieved of his duties at Stamford Bridge back in 2004.

The History

Ranieri’s first major managerial job saw him take up the reins at Serie C outfit Cagliari, following stints at small Italian sides Vigor Lamezia and Campania Puteolana. After leading the Red-blues to two successive promotions, he was rewarded with a contract at Serie A giants Napoli. During his two-season spell at the Stadio San Paolo, Ranieri oversaw the emergence of talismanic Blues frontman Gianfranco Zola, who netted 12 league goals during the 1991/92 campaign.

Ranieri then dropped down a division to take the helm at Serie B side Fiorentina, having posted a 36.67% win percentage at Napoli. He commandeered Viola to a first-place finish in his first season in charge, before bagging both the Coppa Italia and Supercoppa Italia in the 1995/96 Serie A campaign.

Valencia then came calling in 1997, with the Italian presiding over the Oranges for two successful years that harvested a Copa del Rey trophy and qualification to the UEFA Champions League. A switch to Atletico Madrid in 1999 was far less successful; amid Rojiblancos filing for administration and struggling to stave off relegation, Ranieri resigned before being given the push.

Notwithstanding his failed venture in Madrid, Ranieri plotted a course to Chelsea in the summer of 2000. It’s here that the self-effacing Italian earned the moniker “Tinkerman”, due to his penchant for seemingly excessive rotation. Following two sixth-place finishes, he steered Chelsea to Champions League qualification in the 2002/03 season by beating Liverpool on the final day.

Ranieri’s then lead the Blues to their best league position in 49 years, finishing behind the iconic Arsenal “Invincibles”. They also reached the Champions League semi-final that year but lost out to Monaco 5-3 on aggregate, with many attributing the defeat to Ranieri’s unorthodox tactical approach. Chelsea set a club record for the fewest number of goals conceded (30) and highest number of points tallied (79) in the Premier League era, yet Roman Abramovich elected to appoint Jose Mourinho as their new head coach.

After leaving Chelsea, Ranieri returned to Valencia to replace the Liverpool-bound Rafael Benitez, before accepting positions at Parma, Juventus, Roma, Inter Milan, Monaco and the Greece national side over the next seven years – never lasting longer than two terms at any one club. Most recently, Ranieri was sacked just four months into a two-year contract with Greece after claiming just one point in the first four fixtures of their Euro 2016 qualifying campaign.

The Previous Regime

Nigel Pearson began his second stint as Leicester manager from November 2011, having experienced a fractious relationship with previous owner Milan Mandaric. In his first season in charge, the Foxes marginally improved on their efforts under Pearson’s predecessor – Sven-Goran Eriksson – placing ninth in the league. Leicester sneaked into the play-offs in the following campaign, but their quest to reach Wembley was thwarted when Anthony Knockaert missed a last-minute spot-kick in the second leg of the semi-final against Watford.

Leicester recovered from that disappointment to claim a dominant title win the following term, amassing nine more points (102) than second-placed Burnley (93). Pearson’s troops strung together an unbeaten run of 20 matches midway through the campaign while also setting a new club record for successive victories (nine). In light of Leicester’s convincing promotion to the Premier League, Pearson was honoured as the LMA Championship Manager of the Year.

After recording an eye-catching 5-3 win over Manchester United in Gameweek 5 last term, Leicester went 13 league ties without a win, placing them at the foot of the table over Christmas. The Foxes looked destined to succumb to relegation until a miraculous streak of seven wins and a draw in the final nine league matches propelled them out of the bottom three – having been seven points adrift of 17th-placed Sunderland after 29 fixtures.

Despite engineering a great escape, Leicester chose to relinquish Pearson of his duties on 30 June, stating that their relationship was “no longer viable”. This culminated from a build-up of incidents throughout the season (insulting a fan, an altercation with Crystal Palace’s James McArthur and an argument with a reporter) and close-season (sex tape scandal) that ultimately served to render his on-field successes secondary.

The Season Ahead

Unexpected rotation is the bane of a Fantasy manager’s existence, so Ranieri’s reputation as a tinkerer will cause concern for those eyeing up Leicester assets. Indeed, it appears that the soft-speaking Italian hasn’t shed his propensity for drawing up unusual formations and fielding players out of position during the intervening years: Ranieri deployed Greece in a 4-2-4 set-up during their home loss to Northern Ireland, tasking two low-energy midfielders with running the engine room.

Nonetheless, Ranieri has been quick to confirm he doesn’t intend to make too many alterations to the Foxes playing style after their superb end to the previous season. Leicester’s late surge up the table was based on Pearson’s decision to operate with a 3-4-1-2 and the new man in charge hinted he may well be set to stick to that system.

Speaking at the Foxes training camp, the Italian went on to say:

“When we return to Leicester I will start to speak tactically with them and I am interested to see how quickly they begin to understand my football. It will be very close to how they are used to playing because it’s impossible to change too much. I have seen they are solid when they play three at the back. So we can either play with three midfielders or two in the middle and two on the flank. I don’t want to change too much, just to give them the Italian tactical way.”

Providing he keeps faith in the three-man backline, then, Fantasy managers will be optimistic in light of their late-season displays. The likes of Robert Huth and Wes Morgan – both 4.5 in Fantasy Premier League – offered plenty of threat in the opposition box last term and should continue to offer excellent value. Club captain Morgan is currently featuring for Jamaica in the Gold Cup, though, and it remains to be seen if he’ll be afforded a rest or slot immediately into the starting XI.

It’s worth noting that defensive resolve hasn’t been a prominent feature during Ranieri’s final seasons at Monaco, Roma and Inter Milan, though. The former Palermo defender guided the latter two clubs to sixth-place finishes at the end of his respective tenures, but only three sides conceded more goals (52) than Roma that term, while just the bottom five clubs were breached on more occasions than Inter Milan (55). In addition, Monaco conceded the most (31) goals among the top three during the 2013/14 Ligue 1 campaign.

Further up the field, such a formation also bodes well for one of Marc Albrighton or Riyad Mahrez on the right, whilst new boy Christian Fuchs and Jeffrey Schlupp will battle it out on the opposite flank, with the Austrian’s experience – and dead-ball prowess – perhaps giving him the edge.

Judging by Ranieri’s words, he could operate with either a 3-4-1-2 or 3-4-3, then, and the latter system could see the likes of Jamie Vardy and even new signing Shinji Okazaki fielded out wide in the front three. This may well strengthen Leonardo Ulloa’s claim as the likeliest central option – the Argentine is less versatile than Vardy and Okazaki and could be utilised as the target man if Ranieri opts for a lone striker system. Given that the likes of Andrej Kramaric and David Nugent are also in the mix, though, there’s no shortage of options should the new man in charge opt for a two-man frontline instead.

The worry is that whilst Ranieri may keep faith in the Pearson system, his multitude of options could persuade him to rotate, particularly up front. During his final season with Monaco, for example, he only retained the same strike pairing once during their final nine fixtures – instead choosing to alternate Emmanuel Riviere, Dimitar Berbatov, Anthony Martial and Valere Jermain on a regular basis.

Looking at the fixtures, with clashes against Sunderland, West Ham, Bournemouth and Villa in the first five, Leicester – who play only three of last year’s top seven (TOT, ARS, sou) in the first 13 Gameweeks – certainly offer Fantasy managers one of the kindest opening schedules to the 2015/16 season.

For now, it remains to be seen whether the Italian’s arrival will trigger plenty of chopping and changing or if he’ll look to consistency of selection to afford his new side greater stability. Given that all Leicester strikers are priced at 6.0 or under in the Fantasy Premier League, there’s certainly potential for value in out three-man attacks. However, if Ranieri reverts to type, it may well be that our investment is safer at the back, where you’d certainly expect less need scope for rotation.

Leicester are yet to start their pre-season programme – Tuesday’s outing against Lincoln will provide the first insight into Ranieri’s thinking and the first opportunity to assess their assets in the light of his appointment.

So, I'm looking at a slightly different strategy. I have no idea whether I'll go through with it, but it might be worth a thought.

Till now, I have always used a 3-4-3 (or very rarely a 3-5-2) formation. Usually, this has resulted in me having great midfielders/forwards along with a couple of good defenders and a few 4.5m type defenders along with it.

Keeping Hazard, Sanchez, Aguero, Silva, Costa and Kane out of it - who were all over 5 PPG last season (and are now priced accordingly), I took a look at the rest of the available midfielders and forwards and their PPG:

    Fabregas - 9m - 4.9 PPG
    Siggy - 7.5m - 4.8 PPG
    Ozil - 8.5m - 4.7 PPG
    Mane - 8m - 4.6 PPG
    Chadli - 7m - 4.6 PPG
    Yaya - 8.5m - 4.6 PPG
    Cazorla - 8.5m - 4.5 PPG
    Sterling - 4.5 PPG
    Oscar - 4.5 PPG
    Henderson - 4.4 PPG
    Eriksen - 4.3 PPG
    Mata - 4.2 PPG
    Ramsey - 4.0 PPG
    ADM - 4.0 PPG

    Giroud - 9m - 4.4 PPG
    Benteke - 8.5m - 4.4 PPG
    Cisse - 6.5m - 4.4 PPG
    Sakho - 6.5m - 4.3 PPG
    Murray - 6m - 4.1 PPG
    Rooney - 10.5m - 4.0 PPG

Now comparing this to the top defenders around:

    Ivanovic - 7m - 4.7 PPG
    Terry - 7m - 4.7 PPG
    Azpilicueta - 6m - 4.6 PPG
    Baines - 6.5m - 4.5 PPG
    Koscielny - 6m - 4.4 PPG
    Kolarov - 5.5m - 4.4 PPG
    Clyne - 5.5m - 4.1 PPG
    Bertrand - 5.5m - 4.1 PPG
    Clichy - 5.5m - 4.0 PPG

Looking at these, does it not make sense to spend big on the big defenders - possibly even consider playing a strong 4th defender rather than a 5th mid or 3rd forward? This is not even counting the fact that defenders are less prone to rotation (unless you play for Man City).

Or am I missing something here? Seriously considering starting with 3 big defenders at the very least personally.

My thought is - we still need big PPG players for captaincy. But in all honesty, if I own 2 of Aguero/Hazard/Costa/Sanchez (and maybe Silva), I don't need anyone else for captaincy.

I think we're attracted to mids and forwards mostly because they have the potential to hit that 20 point haul more often. However, assuming you hold a player for a few weeks at a time (on average), the consistent 5-6 points coming in from a Koscielny should be the same - except with lesser risk (no guarantee to be lucky enough to own the guy on the 20 point haul but you can be sure to get consistent CS from Ivanovic).

I thought about him too but honestly, Liverpool only have a defense for 10 consecutive GWs per season, no more than that.

I know but if they don't keep clean sheets is pointless, you have to buy him at the right time, when someone points out to Rodgers that their defense is crappy and he decides to do something about it and he actually manages to have a good defense for a period of time...compromising the overall quality of the teamplay.

I'm worried that Liverpool will just mess up their clean sheets. He worth it?

              Currently looking at:

              Ivanovic
              Koscielny
              Baines

and maybe Azpi as a fourth defender.

Dunno. But I won't be getting Clyne, I don't believe.

                Ivanovic, Fonte, Koscielny, Francis, Prödl

I'm thinking Baines over Fonte. Mostly because we can't be sure of Soton to be at the level they were last season (I still expect them to be tight defensively - just maybe not as tight).

Baines is still the #1 penalty taker right?

Why care for ownership? I know we all say it's important for "differentials" but is a differential good if the template is outscoring it?

If a temptlate team has the best players in the league - you will end up with higher total points at the end of the season.

I actually meant that if Liverpool won't keep CS right away Clyne's price will fall down quickly with such a high ownership. And that's not an unlikely scenario.

Nice approach. The only thing I would say, is that some of the mids & forwards have the potential to smash their previous records, and then be priced accordingly the following season.

The defenders should have a lower points ceiling.

Correct, but who? I agree that there's value in having Henderson for example. I would even have considered Chadli if I was sure of his pitch time.

Guys like Siggy are the exceptions. Before the season Siem De Jong / Remy Cabella were as highly hyped as Siggy was. No guarantee you get the right one. No guarantee that they can maintain it either.

I'm probably going to have Hazard, Aguero and Walcott. Balance that with other players.

Yep, picking 'em is the problem alright. I think Mane & Coutinho could be important picks @8m...probably important to have a 7m mid and an 8.5m mid too, and switch between them as they come in and out of form. I never said it would be easy. 🙂

Henderson is a clear pick for me. Especially with set pieces and maybe penalties.

The good thing is you can switch picks pretty easily with this strategy!

Good and important post. I still think we should stick with 3 at the back, get heavyweight mids/strikers and use rotation of 4.5-5m defenders to achieve Ivan-like ppg (~4.5) at a discount. It should be possible by rotating the like of Cresswell, Francis, Huth and friends.

I used to do that. I'm just not sure I even got points out of it. I always seemed to get the rotation wrong (or more likely, you only notice it when you have points left on the bench - not when you make the right calls).

Not sure about 3 or 4 at the back yet - but worth looking at.

I don't know if looking at last year's winner is the right thing.

For example, some tool measured how well you did with your captains. I think I got around 50% of my potential points. I think if I had got 85%, I would've beat last years winner.

For me, winning FPL requires lots of skill. But it also needs a lot of luck. You'll find a lot of guys who had the same defenders but rotated at the wrong times IMO 🙂

Luck helps, but I'd say the successful players have better nerves! I knew and pointed out that Leicester had 5 easy home games in 6 (incl dgw) and still didn't load up on their assets; the winner did. I also chickened out on hits for Tekkers and Philips for the dgw. I think we've got to grow a set and trust the season ticker - form bap magnets with fixtures will deliver.

When you can get Chelsea, City, Arsenal defences for 6m and under why do you need to risk rotation failure? It's not difficult to get at least 2 of them.

In the old days we would have a whole set (keeper and 4 defenders) for 6m and under so a minimum of 2 should be standard instead of pinning all your hopes on promoted teams and lower end teams who tend to struggle with clean sheets.

The competition is getting harder (bar set at 4.9ppg for defenders) so we have to have better options than say Terry at 7m away to City where he will concede. We have to give ourselves a chance of 5 plus pointdls every week for our defenders. Hence the quest for the optimal rotations.

Chelsea had 17 clean sheets last year with a manager who has no shame in parking his bus, City will improve this year as will Arsenal with Cech, United could now they've reinforced their midfield and Liverpool have it in them to shut out, set and forget is the way forward because the pricing is so generous this year at the back.

WBA had 16 cleanies but also got hammered a few times eg home to Villa (might have been the cup, mind). I still think Kos for example is pricey; doesn't stay injury free and they concede in a lot of away games. I'll personally avoid the 6m and more defenders with the exception of Azpi. Think the like of Sakko are much better value.

I think maybe its the threshold you are working to, to be better off with the defender you are often relying on few goals.......e.g. Mertesaker last season failed to score

But it is really worth considering looking at those stats....I guess it only really applies to the top 3 defenders

That's true. But you can always pick a defender you expect to score as well.

BPS is key for them too - look at Skrtel in there. He only had 1 goal in the league last season.

Baines is a guarantee for 2-3 goals and 2-3 assists at the very least.

I know that if Ivanovic goes a few games without any returns it would be tempting to downgrade him and invest elsewhere.

Having a steady stream of ppg players is good but the succesful players will start with Fabregas, ditch him for a four game Eriksen purple patch, ditch him for a hat trick Mane etc. That would get more points than a standard 4.9 a game

Your missing the fact the points aren't dispersed regularly over the course of the game, koscielnys opening scores per week - 10,0,1,1,6,2
Low scores are just as likely in some games for the top and bottom sides (priced accordingly).
The fixture ticker seems to call it most of the time, I'm sticking with that.

I think a very heavy back line is detrimental, as mentioned above it is the kids and the forwards that ar more likely to reach these double figure hauls.

But this does say some thing about having expensive defenders anyway. Perhaps 1 or 2 with a rotating third spot is the way of the season, something that I will be keeping an eye out.

        Currently on Ivan and Kosc.

        > Or am I missing something here?

We're missing the fact that we transfer players in & out of our squad & this *hopefully* results in us scoring more than what these players average per game.

Remember, even if we somehow managed to roster every player from this year's Dream Team in GW1 we still wouldn't win the game. Not even close.

The best managers outperform that score by a decent margin.

So, when we roster 3 Heavy Hitting defenders sure they'll score at a decent clip.
But, they won't come anywhere near what we could get when we switch from say Siggy to Mane for example.

Billy Gilmore's computer program found 2 optimal affordable valid dead team squads that would have beaten Simon Marsh by 2 points, both of which included 8 of the 11 players in the Overall Dream Team. Remember that the squad contains 4 bench players who will be auto-subbed when others miss a match, and that the captain (and vice-captain when auto-promoted) score double.

No-one could have predicted this squad at the start of the season though. The highest finish for an actual dead team was outside the top 100k.

            OK.

I'm not here to split hairs over dead teams or dream teams.
Because, that's not really speaking the point I'm making.

If we use our FT's well then we should *expect* to score more than a player's Points per Appearance average.

As a result, rostering 3 Heavy Hitters in defence & leaving them there for the entire year *may* not be the best strategy to maximise our total points.

Because, with so much of our bankroll tied up in our backline, it takes away from the cash we have to spend on transferring in new attackers who tend to be more explosive scorers than defenders are.

You said that the Dream Team wouldn't even come close to winning the game, so I thought it was relevant to point out that with a few adjustments it was possible to construct a theoretical dead team squad that would have beaten the champion

But even if it was possible to predict the Dream Team in advance, it would still not be affordable with only a £100m budget for our 15 man squad.

And no-one would ever be able to select the ideal dead team squad in advance, so the ability of real life FPL managers to use rotation, change the captain, make transfers and play wildcards does mean that, as you say, a real life dead team will never come close to beating the champion.

But where Why Always Mesut's analysis breaks down IMO is that it takes insufficient account of the cost of the players averaging better than 5 ppg. By spending so much on his defence and also ignoring the possibilities of defensive rotation, he is compromising his ability to afford a sufficient number of the big hitters, so the overall effect on his squad is likely to be negative.

...and the other fault in his analysis is that it ignores VORP (value over replacement player). For example, if you need to save £1.0m by either replacing Ivanovic by Azpilicueta or Henderson by Walters, then the former only drops from 4.7ppg to 4.6ppg, but the later drops from 4.4ppg to 3.9ppg.

                2. Also, great point.
WC, FT's, Pts hits, DGW's, all make this a very fluid situation.

                3. Red Lightening, couldn't have said it better myself. We totally agree.

Reflecting back, we could just be getting caught up in an 'either / or' discussion when a combo approah may be best...
                Honestly, who knows?

In the end, if looking back at FPL Discovery's season review has taught me anything there are plenty of ways to crack the Top 10k.
(I mean if triple digit pts hits & no Suarez can get you there then anything & everything in between could to.)

I think it is important to find the right balance, which usually means a medium price defence (not too expensive, and not too cheap) in a 3-4-3 or 3-5-2 formation.

Playing 4 at the back may not be the worst option, but it is difficult to afford a sufficiently strong back four to compensate for having a front six that is weaker than the front sevens in other teams.

I'm late to this one but I would suggest that a comparison of the PPG for rotating defenders should be added here.

We have to own five defenders, but only have to play three of them, so it shouldn't cost anything extra to get a 3 man/4.5m each rotation going. RMT would likely show you that a well-chosen rotation should out score or at least match the scores of all but the truly elite defenders.

The defender named 4.5m Rotation would probably get near 4.0ppg at a savings of at least 1m.

each season is different - last year forwards largely did very poorly and the bps system favoured defenders in 1 or even 2 nil wins.

I certainly wouldn't go into the season with a cheap defence, but I think two premium and three cheapos is fine still. It's very rare for defenders to break double figures, but they can be a lot more consistent on a good run.

I don't know if this held up last season (can't afford a membership just yet), but I did an analysis here last pre-season which showed that in the first few gameweeks of the previous season, premium forwards and midfielders were far more reliable than premium defenders. Defensive points seem to be extremely unpredictable during the first few gameweeks before eventually settling down. It's possible that was just an anomalous season, but my conclusion was that although you may be right that going big on defence is a legitimate tactic at some stages of the season, it's not the best way to start out.

A question for all experienced FF fans! Which is your preferred tactic when it comes to keepers.....

      a) Top Keeper + 4m (e.g. Courtious, De Gea),

      b) Mid Priced Keeper + 4m

      c) The Rotation (two 4.5m keepers)

      d) One cheap(4.5m) + 4m

I used to do C in my first seasons, but the past two I've stuck with either a mid or cheapie plus a 4M keeper. It's one headache less.

Between Cabaye and Bolasie, who do you think is the highest potential point scorer considering recent form+position on the pitch? :/

Bolasie, purely because I can see Cabaye sharing his set pieces with Puncheon and they're his primary source of points.

Is Bolasie a definite started and would he play at a better position point-scoring wise compared to Cabaye though? :/

I would assume Cabaye would play in the pivot and Bolasie out wide so that's in Bolasie's favour. As to him being nailed on, you would hope so given his underlying stats from last season but he's probably not as certain a stater as Cabaye is. Bolasie's 85-90% nailed in my opinion. Up to you whether you want to take that chance. I think his potential points outweigh the risk personally.

How many GWs do we expect Sanchez to miss? Are people planning for this? ie do you have a high value midfielder to swap and enough cash in the bank?

(aimed at those who plan on having him)

For me, I'm thinking Silva, with 1.0 in the bank. But it gives me five strong midfielders, and a reasonably weak strikeforce.

I'm thinking of having a second team but giving myself some sort of restriction when picking players for the season. I know it won't do as well as my normal team but thought it would be a challenge to try and compete.

            Does anyone have any suggestions.

E.g. Only players under 23 or only players from outside of Europe or outside of last years top 4.

I think that's a good idea if it's in a league with rules. But if I bother to do a second team, I'll just aim each week for the top score, transferring several players each week.

An alternative is to stick to one player from each club, or just English players.

As a UFPL rookie, what would class as a decent score for a player in a week? ie. In the main game you'd be satisfied with 6-7 points and above. What would you be looking for in UFPL?

Also, what's a good weekly total for the team?

I finished around 300th last season - I found it difficult to 'sub' any player who scored 6 or more, but it all depends on the strength of your bench MD2, MD3 & this season MD4 players..

My aim was always to score 100 points..not sure if that helps much

Thoughts on this team. Have been inspired by WR and gone with a 352 formation.

            Ruddy, (Butland)
            Azpi, Kosc, Huth, (Richards, Targett)
            Ritchie, Fab, Depay, Walcott, Milner

              - Midfield needs a bit of Hazard.

Enough chances on my team for today 😀
This is how it stands atm, went with Hazard over Fabregas after all.

            Courtois 4.0
            Koscielny Morgan Francis OShea Baker
            Hazard Walcott Henderson 8.5 Wanyama
            Costa Kane Sakho

When Aguero is fit: Costa + 8.5 --> Aguero + Ritchie

Great, tnx and yes I was thinking about Koscielny --> Cresswell (rotates very nicely with Francis) and upgrade Baker.

For the remaining spot in the middfield, most tempted by Cazorla atm, but ofcourse still a long way to go until the first game of the season.

Don't fancy Kane this year at all. Not value at that price IMO. Think Spurs will be undercooked at start as well. Only 3 friendlies plus first game away to Utd. Not for me thanks, all their money's tied up in new stadium. They're the new, old Arsenal before they repaid the debt. Lucky to make top 6 I reckon

I don't fancy Spurs myself, but it's a bit like QPR last year, if they score it will probably be with Kane involved. If Costa starts scoring braces and hattricks, I could also swap Kane to Aguero as well.

What's your defence strategy to start with? To Ivan or not to Ivan? 3 way defensive rotation? Expensive keepers?

Personally set on having Ivan and Kos, whilst rotating the last 3 defenders. Not exactly set on the keeper situation but on Schemichel + 4m, never been a fan on rotating keepers. Aim is to invest wisely into my defence. I think Ivan is very close to a must have.

Those 2 are a bit too expensive, don't see them returning much over 20 times their price. Reckon Cech will outscore Kos for the season at 0.5m cheaper. Feel the money will be needed for Kun and heavyweight mids.

Ivanovic stats' and starts to seasons suggest he'll get off to a flyer. Agree on the rest though.

              I'm doing the same. I'd recommend Schmeich & Hennessey(WBA).
They have a decent rotation, bar GW3. And if you don't want to rotate or Hennessey doesn't play, just play Schmeich every GW anyway.

Current draft is based on Ivan + 4.5*4 (4 way, play 2 rotation).
              Gks probably a 8.5m combo.

For now, yes. Have to remember he's the only recognised striker at the club and they have CL football. Would assume they'll sign someone but there's a chance of an early season burn out IMO.

I think he can, but the issue, I think anyway, is that last season you could have Kane as a 3rd striker, hence have him and Aguero.

This season, because of his price, it's really either Kane or Aguero this time around. That makes a big difference.

Rogers seems to have indicated Milner is nailed on at CM, and he took corners with Henderson on the pitch in the friendly recently.
