Moving Target

Moving Target – Morgan Schneiderlin

On the same day that Manchester United announced the signing of Bayern Munich midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger, Southampton’s Morgan Schneiderlin was also confirmed as a Red Devil. After completing a deal for the combative Frenchman, Louis van Gaal explained the reasons behind his latest acquisition:

“Morgan is a player from the Premier League so he can cope with the Premier League. Our selection was not in balance and I have already mentioned that I want to make the balance with midfielders, so you could expect that I shall buy two holding midfielders. And Morgan Schneiderlin is the type that I think can play in our system and in our philosophy. Manchester United only buy players who can make a contribution for that. We are not buying just for buying.”

The History

Schneiderlin worked his way up the youth ranks at RC Strasbourg, penning his first professional contract in 2005. The French international managed just five appearances with the Alsace club, before being sold to Southampton in the summer of 2008 following Strasbourg’s relegation to the second tier of French football.

The combative midfielder found himself in and out of the line-up during his debut campaign with the Saints, producing zero attacking returns across 23 starts. In the wake of Southampton’s relegation to League One, he cemented a regular berth in the 2009/10 season, serving up one goal and two assists in 37 appearances.

Following the south coast outfit’s promotion back to the Championship for the 2011/12 campaign, Schneiderlin featured in all but four of their league ties, tallying two goals and three assist in 29 starts. A second-place finish gained the Saints entry into the top flight, where the he continued to flourish; having notched five goals and one assist in 36 outings, Schneiderlin was honoured as the Player’s Player and Fans Player of the Year.

In his previous two campaigns at St Mary’s Stadium, he chalked up six goals and three assists over 59 appearances, with ligament injury and a torn abductor muscle restricting him to 24 starts in the 2014/15 season.

Schneiderlin made his debut for France’s senior squad on June 8, 2014 in an 8-0 friendly win against Jamaica. Less than three weeks later, Les Bleus boss Didier Deschamps started him in a World Cup group clash against Ecuador. In all, Schneiderlin has earned nine caps on the international stage but is yet to score.

The Prospects

Schneiderlin’s arrival at Old Trafford – allied with the recruitment of Bastian Schweinsteiger – has furnished Van Gaal with a wealth of excellent midfield options. Factor in the impressive late-season form of Michael Carrick and Ander Herrera, and there is a myriad of viable set-ups that could exploit the Red Devils’ new-found strength.

With Van Gaal likely to operate with a 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3, Schneiderlin can be expected to sit in front of the back-four as Van Gaal attempts to bring a better balance to a side that managed just 11 clean sheets in the previous campaign – just one more than relegated pair Hull and Burnley.

In terms of his individual Fantasy worth, Schneiderlin hardly set the world alight with four goals and one assist in 2,186 minutes for Saints last term, yet his 5.5 price tag in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game could entice some investors who are reluctant to invest heavily in United’s premium options.

Surprisingly, Schneiderlin fashioned shots (one per 76.7 minutes) at a similar rate to Mata (73.2 minutes) last year and has wasted no time in settling into his new surrounds, having scored on his United debut last week. In terms of creativity, it’s clear he is no deep-lying playmaker in the mould of Cesc Fabregas – the Frenchman provided just 20 key passes in 26 appearances in 2014/15, though his minutes per key pass (115) was still far quicker than Carrick’s 191.1, for example.

One look at the stats highlights what the new boy will mainly bring to Old Trafford. In his three seasons in the Premier League, Schneiderlin’s ball-winning ability was fundamental to the Saints’ style of play. In 2012/13, where he missed just two matches, he was first amongst Premier League midfielders for attempted tackles (182), successful tackles (108) and interceptions (139), whilst he sat third for successful tackles in each of the last two campaigns (2013/14, with 87 and 2014/15, with 79) despite his pitch time being somewhat restricted due to injury.

It may well be, then, that his determined displays in the centre of the park will boost United’s defensive prospects more than anything else. Given that no Red Devils defender made 30 or more appearances last year, though, many Fantasy managers will be wary of investing in Van Gaal’s backline from the off unless the remaining pre-season line-ups suggest greater consistency of selection.

In terms of fixtures, the opening schedule could certainly be a lot kinder for Van Gaal’s troops, though. United play six of last year’s top eight in the first ten Gameweeks, suggesting that Schneiderlin’s defensive duties will be key in the first couple of months. The Frenchman may well struggle to earn our attention if, as expected, he’s mainly employed to break up opposition attacks and provide the platform for Mata, Depay and Wayne Rooney to wreak havoc further up the field.

      Kane

      I would think.

      Kane
      Chadli, Eriksen, Lamela/Townsend
      Mason, Bentaleb

But wary of rotation with Dembele wanting more gametime, and sometimes Eriksen pushed out wide making him a bit redundant.

yea teams pushed eriksen wide at the end of the season and that affected Kane pretty badly.

      At a guess...

      Bentaleb Dembele
      Townsend Eriksen Chadli
      Kane

Dembele could be Mason, Townsend could be Lamela. And there could be additions.

What is everyone's opinion on Defoe 5.5

    GW1- Leicester (A)
    GW2- Norwich (H)
    GW3- Swansea (H)
    GW4- Aston Villa (A)

Any takers for a 3rd forward option?

Had him a few times, for 5.5 seems better than Deeney or Wilson, who on here seem to have God-tier status already without proving anything in PL, unlike Defoe, but sadly he plays for a crap team.

can put together a really strong team based on fixtures and unless Chelsea go mental will be able to afford them on wc.
might pick a few price rises too...

Thinking that planning for WC gw4 just makes a lot of sense with the new rules

    1. andyinasia
      • 10 Years
      8 years, 9 months ago

Was just discussing that a moment ago:

This morning I had a Damascus Road-like conversion experience.

I enjoy reading views and tips on FF but have always ignored it all and gone my own way. I've resisted until now this line that you should plan to WC in GW4. I've always put out a squad I think is strong and intend to keep going until a WC becomes a necessity, as late as possible. However, every year I have a howler around GW2, 3 or 4 and end up WCing early anyway. But this time a thread I read this morning changed my mind and now I've put up a squad to focus on the first 3-4 GWs only. Given the opening fixtures then, that means a manical trebling-up on Saints (nb Leicester and Sunderland, together with Norwich and Bournemouth start kindly).
Here's what I've got, please RMT in the light of what I've just explained:

      GK Schmeichel [non-play Hennessey]
DEF Cedric [or Fonte], Huth, Bassong, Francis, O'Shea
MID Fab, Wally, Sterling, Tadic, Matic
      FWD Costa, Rooney, Pelle

      1. The Man Pastore
        • 9 Years
        8 years, 9 months ago

        Why Matic?
        Mane > Tadic imo

        1. andyinasia
          • 10 Years
          8 years, 9 months ago

Matic? All I can get for my loose change. An alternative is a punt on Abdi with Watford's openers, but he'd be benchfodder anyway.

          1. The Man Pastore
            • 9 Years
            8 years, 9 months ago

so why don't you downgrade to a 4.5 if it is to be on the bench?

You could use that extra money on the GK/DEF. Maybe upgrade Hennessey to Fabianski, very good rotation with Schmeichel

            1. andyinasia
              • 10 Years
              8 years, 9 months ago

Downgrading Matic only brings in 0.5 With that I can't get Mane, Flappy or anyone worthwhile. The defence are chosen with the opening 4 gw fixtures in mind.

        2. Nabs Kebabs

Yeah i always seem to wc in gw 4 tbh. A fair few are considering the "plan for gw 4 wc" route it looks like this season.

        RMT:

        1/1.5
        1/2
        2/3.5
        2/3

        =6/10

Hmm sorry but i don't like it much if i'm honest. Don't think the SOT fixtures are that good to deserve a triple up with 2 of the first 3 away. WHM have those juicy home fixtures would prefer Payet/Sakho instead of Tadic/Pelle. Matic is a very poor fpl pick, should be a 4.5 to optimize the other spots in your 11.

Maybe we should start a different equally non plausible rumour like Ronaldo has asked for a release because of Rafa

          Yeah that sounds good.

          Tomorrows headline:
          "Ronaldo says No to Benitez"

Appears Cristiano Ronaldo is done with the Champions League contenders and wants to fight for a top 4 finish in England.

Midfield is solid with bonus of Hazard - Anya? Don't know enough but he's a cheap punt.
Strikerforce - all good options. No Aguero but you knew that already.

Really doubt it's Benzema. Would be too much money for a 27 year old, who's 28 in December.

      1. BRONALDINHO
        • 9 Years

Still has 3 or 4 seasons left in the tank. And he's perfect if they want to win NOW. Lacazzette would be an awesome addition but he'd still need seasong while Benzema will be a hit right away

        1. Wilshere Knowledge
          • 10 Years

Not sure 3-4 seasons is enough with no resale value. (at least not near what he'd cost)

And Real Madrid only have one striker, his agent said he is 1000% staying (hate it when people say that 😉 ), and we get linked to him every year because he's french.

Well RVP did wonders for United (sorry for the reference) in that span. As for the Real they might just surprise anyone and just sell him. As far as I remember he wasn't one of Florentino's favorites, and there that's important. Would have been easier if he was uglier. Florentino only likes his pretty boys. A proven fact 😀

£24m + £200k+ a week for 3 years, for one PL title where they basically had no competition, isn't great value.

          I don't know.

Lacazette seems to fit our profile better. 24, room for improvement, potential resale value.

In a world of 3 to 4 year contracts 27 years old is not old at all.. and Benzema is pure class and is easily worth the outlay

        1. Wilshere Knowledge
          • 10 Years
          8 years, 9 months ago

RvP was better than Bezema at his best, and he started declining at 30, and sold for less than £5m by 31.

If we're talking £40m+, it's too much for Arsenal imo.

          1. BRONALDINHO
            • 9 Years
            8 years, 9 months ago

would you rather buy Lacazette and have a chance in 3-4 years or buy Benzema and have a chance to win now?

            1. Wilshere Knowledge
              • 10 Years
              8 years, 9 months ago

Firstly, it's not about what I'd do. It's about what Wenger and the club want to do.

But yes, I'd rather go for Lacazette, but I don't believe that would mean we couldn't go for the title.

I like Benzema, but he's not exactly in the Aguero/Suarez/Lewandowski class.

              1. BRONALDINHO

Well Lacazette now is what Benzema was when he was at Lyon. Anyway both are great players and would go straight in my team if Arsenal buy one. So, for the sake of competition I hope something happens 🙂

Do you have Wilson, or Deeney in your team?

Deeney could do a Charlie Austin (score well for the team that gets relegated)

What's everyone's thoughts on this. I have to stick with the same team for the first 2 GW's as I am going to South Africa and im not spending my time there worried about transfers, so I've tried to select a team looking at the first 2 GW's as just one long set of fixtures 😉

    Ruddy (Butland)
Kaboul Huth Ivanovic (Ward, Steven Taylor)
    Ritchie Hazard Silva Henderson (Flamini)
    Rooney Costa Ighalo

Anyone see any changes they think I should make?

Make sure your cheap mid and forward options will get playing time.
Flamini and Ighalo are not nailed. Wanyama is for example.

I think Ivan to Azpi to make Ighalo better is worth it. If a .5 left over then up a 4.5 defender to a 5. Is ward Palace? Not sure on their fixtures

      Another option is this

      Ivanovic -> Azpi
      Henderson -> Cazorla
      Flamini -> Wanyama
      Huth -> Cedric

      What do you reckon?

ok, so thanks to the community i know that if i even try to make a transfer i'll be forced to get rid of one of my 4 citeh players. so, the next question (hopefully as many votes as possible!) is, A or B?

    A:
    Schmeichel/Fabianski
    Turner/Kompany/Mings/Cedric/Mariappa
    Gomez/Yaya/Sterling/Ramsey/Grealish
    Aguero/Costa/Sakho

    B:
    Butland/Myhill
    Azpi/Huth/Yoshida/Clyne/Richards
    Hazard/Sterling/Ritchie/Hendo/King
    Kane/Aguero/Deeney

My initial thinking was Citeh will be one of the top sides and have the best fixtures of top sides for first 1/4 of season, best to have 4. There are plenty of issues with the rest of the team, sure, but 3 citeh attackers and (what i'm convinced will be) a resurgent kompany? surely worth it?

    many thanks for votes.

    Question:

    Which option do you prefer?

    A) Ivan, Hazard, Gomis
    B) Azpi, Fabregas, Rooney

I'd change Depay to an Arsenal Mid. Been to Coco Bongo's yet?

Think it just comes down to personal preference with the arsenal mids. I'm a Ramsey fan but stats suggest Carzola. But I think you should have one in there
