Great Expectations

Great Expectations – Matt Ritchie

After a dazzling campaign for Championship winners Bournemouth, Matt Ritchie is very much at the forefront of Fantasy managers’ minds ahead of the 2015-16 season. The winger was the driving force behind the Cherries’ title triumph last year, picking up 15 goals and 17 assists in the league alone, and with a price of 6.0 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, there is every suggestion that he will justify selection in our squads.

It’s been a meteoric rise for the Gosport-born Scottish international. His role in Swindon’s 2012 promotion from the fourth tier earned him the League Two Player of the Season award and, after impressing from the off the following season, he was snapped up by Bournemouth in January 2013 before going on to pick up the League One Player of the Season award for 2012/13.

Ritchie hasn’t stopped impressing since and his sterling performances during the previous campaign earned him a Scotland call up, whilst he was also named in the Championship Team of the Year. Now it is time for the winger to prove himself at the top level…

KEY FACTORS

    • Fantasy managers love a trigger-happy midfielder and Ritchie certainly falls into that category. No midfielder managed more attempts on goal than the Cherries’ man (151) last season and the winger also fired in a goal attempt more frequently than any of his team-mates, registering 3.3 efforts per appearance. Impressively, an average of 24.7 minutes per shot would have placed him third amongst midfielders with a minimum of ten appearances last term – just ahead of Arsenal’s Alexis Sanchez (25.4), albeit at a lower level. Having climbed from League Two to Premier League level in three years, there is no doubting that Ritchie has the ability to adapt to a new division – since the 2011-12 League One campaign, he has averaged 11.5 goals and 10.5 league goals per season.

    • Ritchie’s ability from long range could be a key factor. The Scotland international produced 100 of his 151 efforts from outside the area and is renowned for the power of his shooting and long-distance accuracy. Indeed, six of his 15 goals last year came from outside the box – a tally matched by only Christian Eriksen amongst Premier League midfielders from 2014/15. Although Bournemouth enjoyed the most possession of all Championship clubs in their promotion campaign, they will not expect to work the ball into the box quite so easily this term and Ritchie’s ability from distance could prove vital.

    • No Championship player managed more than Ritchie’s 17 assists last season. The club’s number one for dead-ball duties is by far the Cherries’ most creative player and will be vital in forging opportunities if Eddie Howe’s side are to avoid the drop. Ritchie provided 98 goal scoring opportunities for his team-mates in 2014/15, which equates to an average of 38.07 minutes per chance created. Compared to Premier League midfielders with a minimum of 20 appearances in the season gone by, this would have placed him tenth, just ahead of illustrious company such as Gylfi Sigurdsson (38.1 minutes) and Alexis Sanchez (39 minutes).

    • Although many promoted clubs tend to start cautiously in a bid to contain opponents, Eddie Howe is adamant that Bournemouth will continue with the same approach that saw the Cherries register an average 58.6% possession last year – more than any other side in the Championship. Discussing his approach over the summer, Howe’s determination to go on the attack can only be good news for Ritchie’s prospects:

      “We always felt that, by implementing a football philosophy that could be transferable from League One to the Championship, and the Championship to the Premier League, it would give us more of a chance. If you rip it all up and start again just because you’re in the top division, it’s too difficult. I don’t think we’d forsake our principles just because we’ve gone up. Sure, if you could guarantee me success playing a different way, being more direct and crossing balls in earlier, then we’d look at it. But in the Premier League the best way to win is to dominate the ball. That’s what we seek to do.”

  • One look at the early schedule suggests potential suitors may want to get Ritchie on board in their initial squads. Although the Cherries face two away clashes in the first three rounds of fixtures, they are rated top of our season ticker for the first eight Gameweeks, with home clashes against Aston Villa, Leicester, Sunderland and Watford, in addition to trips to Norwich and Stoke, heightening their Fantasy potential from the outset.

    However many drafts i do without Aguero - i always just put him back in as

    a) i think he'll only miss first 70 mins of WBA game and
    b) seems a real waste to WC early jut to get him back - esp. with the chips in play this year

    Will just put Costa in for week 1 then swap back for week 2

    What's everyone else thinking?

      Three tough fixtures anyway for City to start with. I probably will get him in by GW 4 via 2 free trades. Shouldn't be too difficult.

        This!

        Or get him in on an early WC.

        I can think of quite a few strikers who I'd fancy to outscore him in the first 3 GW.

    Mourinho has made Hazard a more complete player, that's for sure. However, don't you think Mourinho's rigidness in the tactics has held back Hazard a bit, not letting him be as creative as he could?

    I know, team strenght is more important than individual shine, Mourinho proved that last year in the PL. But why can't you have both? Other teams outside the PL have shown you can and if you manage to do so that's when you really become a world class team.

    I think that if Hazard was given a bit more creative freedom that Chelsea would become a team seriously competing for the CL trophy. It sounds a bit far fetched yeah, but I do believe one player can give you that little extra push to go from good to great...

    That's my thoughts of the morning. Thanks for reading...

      Hazard was at his best under Rafa. Take into consideration penalties and ess gametime, Hazard's numbers were much better.

    A. Costa Rooney Deeney (would play 3-5-2)
    B. Costa Giroud Berahino
    C. Rooney Pellè Berahino

    Not sure if it's been mentioned already but I've read on the Beeb that Walcott's signed a new deal making him one of Arsenal's highest paid players. An indication he's about to become a more secure starter?

      Worrying defense..... I wouldn't feel comfortable starting with that. To upgrade it, you could downgrade Johnson who is costing you 5.5M and will just be sitting on your bench..... Drop him for wanyama, then use the 1M to do PVA to azpi. Or PVA to darmian and cedric to Mert and Richards or Francis to yoshida.

      No need for Milner if you have benteke.

          Aye, sorry never noticed Milner. Set pieces made me go for hendo over Milner. I think hendo is a very good price personally given he's nailed on, has set pieces and gets his fair share of attacking returns. He scored well last season I thought.

    Pelle or Mane or having both isn't bad either?

    Yes, Mane has proven himself and yes, Pelle missed chances by cucketloads last season but one is for sure, Southampton were created abundance of chances. Now that Pelle is showing great form and burying those shots in the pre season, doesn't he become a better pick than what he was last year (and maybe at par with Mane)?

      • 9 Years

      As a saints fan i think Pelle + Tadic will do what they did last year, do well early then fade. With Saints attacking players they will give someone a shoe-ing the first 4 weeks but we need a CB to be as solid at the back as last year

        I am interested in Cedric only from your defense and Home fixtures are very good so not that worried.

        However, you don't think Pelle has improved? (he was pretty good in some last weeks of last season if I am not wrong)

    RMT please. Be critical if there are faults!

    I think I've done the best I could for the start of the season 🙂

    Starting: 3-5-2

    Myhill

    Azp - Kosc - Cedric

    Haz - Ozil - Mane - Hendo - Ritchie

    Rooney - Benteke

    Subs: Hennessey - Sakho - Targett - Turner
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    * I don't Like rotating defence & I like my main 3 defenders. Targett is Auto-emergency until Bertrands back.
    * Sakho starts GW 1 on bench as he is facing Arsenal, GW 2 he will switch with Ritchie.
      You will get a big attacking benching dilemma each week, which is not a bad thing but this means that you got funds occupied and will have trouble getting in Costa/Kane/Aguerooooooo when one or two of them starts firing
      Also, spending a FT on Targett when you will need them for Sanchez/Aguero/Pool mids/United mids as they come along isn't very wise
          Well, Benteke may take some time to ease in and Liverpool fixtures are bad. So maybe Giroud in place of Benteke and some cheapie bench material in place of Hendo (which will allow you to do Rooney -> Aguero in GW4)
          cheap defense is a lottery so would suggest keep an eye on the pre-seasons and replace Targett with whomever you feel right.
          Also, do check Lucy's post on Southampton. very helpful that is
    Is there anyone worth a punt based on the Utd v Barca match? Someone suggested Darmian and Shaw will be nailed based on pre seasons and will Depay play as no 10?
    1. Wilshere Knowledge
      • 10 Years
      If anyone suggested they are 'nailed', they are grossly misusing the term. Shaw is competing against Blind and Rojo. I think he'll be first choice, but he's certainly not nailed. His biggest issue though have always been injury related.
      There's also too many unknowns about Darmian. He should be first choice, but with LvG who knows.
      Depay has been central, who knows whether that will continue.
      1. Giggs22
        • 11 Years
        8 years, 9 months ago
        I agree, Valencia will be competing for RB too I believe. Schneiderlin is only 5.5 but I can't see him offering much in points.
        Still one surprise signing too apparently...
        Mata or Depay?
    2. Zombie
      • 11 Years
      8 years, 9 months ago
      Depay will be on wings I feel and Mata most likely to be central for us. Against Barcelona we needed to pack the midfield so that Barca couldn't ping the ball around. However against weaker teams, we will use pace to stretch the teams and that's where Depay is at his best.
      About Darmian and Shaw: no, they are not nailed.
          More than that. He's been a great outlet, his pace has been instrumental for us on the break, and he's made and scored important goals. I'm no fan of ritchie at all from what I've seen of him for Scotland. I know he got plenty assists last season in the championship but he's looked well out his depth for Scotland and was hooked at half time last match. It was about 20 minute late.
              Ritchie is not in any of my teams in the various games but that's maybe more a personal thing. I don't know if Anya will start for Watford. That's what stopped me getting him as my 4.5 mid. I went fletcher to have a nailed on starter.
                interesting
                i'm not a scot but it does appear anya rises to the occasion and is given licence to play his own game in a scot shirt
                watford fans dont seem to rate him that much ,as compared to abdi for instance,and think he might get squeezed out of a starting slot.
                Ritchie,adored by bour fans,does not seem to show up for scotland but is super nailed on.
                Me
                i'm playing ritchie in mid-fixtures and nailed on-as my fourth
                wany -at 4.5-my fifith nailed
      Because Anya was a former Northampton Town player, clearly La Masia of the midlands taught him well.
        Yes my defence looked better when I had Azpil but thought I may aswell get Cortouis n save 0.5 as I was only getting Azpil for cs, but yes cud do with a arsenal or man u defender! If Richie doesn't do much I'd swap him for ki n get a better defender for Ogbonna! Cheers pal
    People who are picking Benteke, are you lot assuming that he will seamlessly fit into the Livepool team? There is no doubt that he is premier league quality, but surely the team that he is playing in would make a huge difference no?
    I'm not sold on the guy in a new team yet. Thoughts please?
      I think he will be put in straight away, i can't see liverpool keeping a £32.5M striker on the bench.
      He is a very good technical player, he could play in any system. The idea that he only scores from headers is a myth.
      wait and see for me, doesnt suit Liverpool's style of play or the other forwards around him
      i can just see lpool having a poor start and Brenda being right under the cosh
      Surely if you're taking a punt on a transferred player then someone like tekkers is the one to do. Better than punting on someone coming into the prem for the first time. I've no doubt he'll score goals and if he hits the ground running he's a great price.
      I am kinda sure that he will be a success. Although I am gonna wait and watch at least couple of matches to see how he fits in (lack of full pre season with the team is also a factor).
      However, if he starts well, downgrading one of Costa/Rooney or upgrading Pelle is just an FT away.
      Team flexibility is the key for me
    RMT please
    Schmeichel Flappyhandski
    Kosc Azpil Sakho Yoshida O'Shea
    Hazard Walcott Milner Ki Aarons
    Kane Rooney Sakho
    I know the part about Yoshida.Please suggest a better 9.0 GK rotation, I feel the midfield is a bit weak.
      I'd like to suggest any 5.0 defender besides a Liverpool one. I don't think their defensive prowess warrants investment until they break into stride. They can be quite unconvincing at the back and at 5.0 there are better options in Ashley Williams and Cedric even.
      I'd say go with a Cedric/Sunderland rotation combination since you're already rotating LEI/SWA in goal.
    How are people managing to include Kun and Hazard in the same team?
    B)Haz + Costa
      Have a cheaper defence and 4th midfield player, and have only one other expensive striker.
      Ruddy
      Azpil, Cedric, Alderweireld
      HAZARD, Ozil, Milner, Ritchie
      AAGUERO, Rooney, Igahlo
      Although still not convinced, a lot of money tied up if Aguero either doesn't start or doesn't start scoring right away.
    Can anybody suggest otherwise for the cost?
        First suggestion is ok, but if you look at the season ticker and the rotation for the first 6 weeks, Villa and Hammers just pips the Swans and Foxes
