Great Expectations

Great Expectations – Matt Ritchie

After a dazzling campaign for Championship winners Bournemouth, Matt Ritchie is very much at the forefront of Fantasy managers’ minds ahead of the 2015-16 season. The winger was the driving force behind the Cherries’ title triumph last year, picking up 15 goals and 17 assists in the league alone, and with a price of 6.0 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, there is every suggestion that he will justify selection in our squads.

It’s been a meteoric rise for the Gosport-born Scottish international. His role in Swindon’s 2012 promotion from the fourth tier earned him the League Two Player of the Season award and, after impressing from the off the following season, he was snapped up by Bournemouth in January 2013 before going on to pick up the League One Player of the Season award for 2012/13.

Ritchie hasn’t stopped impressing since and his sterling performances during the previous campaign earned him a Scotland call up, whilst he was also named in the Championship Team of the Year. Now it is time for the winger to prove himself at the top level…

KEY FACTORS

    • Fantasy managers love a trigger-happy midfielder and Ritchie certainly falls into that category. No midfielder managed more attempts on goal than the Cherries’ man (151) last season and the winger also fired in a goal attempt more frequently than any of his team-mates, registering 3.3 efforts per appearance. Impressively, an average of 24.7 minutes per shot would have placed him third amongst midfielders with a minimum of ten appearances last term – just ahead of Arsenal’s Alexis Sanchez (25.4), albeit at a lower level. Having climbed from League Two to Premier League level in three years, there is no doubting that Ritchie has the ability to adapt to a new division – since the 2011-12 League One campaign, he has averaged 11.5 goals and 10.5 league goals per season.

    • Ritchie’s ability from long range could be a key factor. The Scotland international produced 100 of his 151 efforts from outside the area and is renowned for the power of his shooting and long-distance accuracy. Indeed, six of his 15 goals last year came from outside the box – a tally matched by only Christian Eriksen amongst Premier League midfielders from 2014/15. Although Bournemouth enjoyed the most possession of all Championship clubs in their promotion campaign, they will not expect to work the ball into the box quite so easily this term and Ritchie’s ability from distance could prove vital.

    • No Championship player managed more than Ritchie’s 17 assists last season. The club’s number one for dead-ball duties is by far the Cherries’ most creative player and will be vital in forging opportunities if Eddie Howe’s side are to avoid the drop. Ritchie provided 98 goal scoring opportunities for his team-mates in 2014/15, which equates to an average of 38.07 minutes per chance created. Compared to Premier League midfielders with a minimum of 20 appearances in the season gone by, this would have placed him tenth, just ahead of illustrious company such as Gylfi Sigurdsson (38.1 minutes) and Alexis Sanchez (39 minutes).

    • Although many promoted clubs tend to start cautiously in a bid to contain opponents, Eddie Howe is adamant that Bournemouth will continue with the same approach that saw the Cherries register an average 58.6% possession last year – more than any other side in the Championship. Discussing his approach over the summer, Howe’s determination to go on the attack can only be good news for Ritchie’s prospects:

“We always felt that, by implementing a football philosophy that could be transferable from League One to the Championship, and the Championship to the Premier League, it would give us more of a chance. If you rip it all up and start again just because you’re in the top division, it’s too difficult. I don’t think we’d forsake our principles just because we’ve gone up. Sure, if you could guarantee me success playing a different way, being more direct and crossing balls in earlier, then we’d look at it. But in the Premier League the best way to win is to dominate the ball. That’s what we seek to do.”

  • One look at the early schedule suggests potential suitors may want to get Ritchie on board in their initial squads. Although the Cherries face two away clashes in the first three rounds of fixtures, they are rated top of our season ticker for the first eight Gameweeks, with home clashes against Aston Villa, Leicester, Sunderland and Watford, in addition to trips to Norwich and Stoke, heightening their Fantasy potential from the outset.

An interesting differential at Watford could be Jurado. Spanish midfielder who played under Flores at Athletico. Was very impressive on debut in the friendly win at Dundee yesterday, assisting Deeney's goal. He was the only player to complete the full 90 minutes (having moved from Russia where their season has already started).

Comments made after the match suggested Flores plans to build the side around him this season. Interesting to see how he does, and how this affects Abdi.

Yes, it will be interesting to see. My one WFC player will be Deeney, as he's tried and tested (though not in the PL I appreciate).

The likes of Abdi, Jurado, Berghuis, Ighalo etc could all be worth keeping an eye on as the season unfolds..

benteke, some people seem to think team will be set up to supply him, some think he will be part of 433 and may not keep up scoring record from last year but decent price for premium striker in a top side team. like most time will tell but could be a risk given mixed fixtures

Tadic traditionally does, because he's left footed, but he was frequently deployed on the right by Koeman.

        • 10 Years

I expect JRod's game time to come on the other side of the pitch or upfront. Tadic provides good balance for someone like Mané or JRod on the other wing.

Balance is an interesting point but JRod's best position is definitely on the left where he can cut inside and be a wide forward. Tadic could play on the right but at the expense of Mane that would be a bold call. I doubt all 3 will play at once.

          1. Lucy.
            • 10 Years

Tadic has tended to play on the right for Saints anyway. I expect there to be rotation for everyone at one point or another.

For example, Mané was nearly always rested after playing for Senegal.

JRod's first opportunities may be in Europa.

You are probably right there Lucy, Rotation all round but I'm quite confident Pelle will be the main striker for the season, I can't see that changing unless he goes through another woeful patch. JRod, Tadic and Mane will be competing for 2 spots and I agree, JRod will start as a midweek player till he proves himself to Koeman.

    Would you rather own
    A) Sakho + Ritchie: Gives you an attacking rotation of AVL/LEI/BOU/LEI/NEW/SUN/NOR/WAT and a good attacker on the bench incase of injuries elsewhere in your squad.
    B) A 8 million striker + Wanyama/7.5 mid + Ighalo:
Basically no back up for short term injuries and you got to play him every game(this could be a good or bad thing)

    A) looks so much better tbh yet most seem to go for a B) combo. that "too much money on the bench term is getting a bit irritating" 🙂

From a Liverpool fan I'd say Milner. In preseason friendlies he has been willingly attacking at every opportunity and has been getting assists and has been on the scoresheet a couple of times. Despite hendo's set pieces, I think that Henderson's captaincy may mean that he plays a more disciplined role, therefore lowering his potential for goals and assists. Go with Milner

What does everyone think to playing 3-5-2, at least initially? Costa and Sakho up front then Costa to Aguero when the fixtures turn? Only problem for me would be a defence consisting of all 4.5's.

Either Ruddy/Begovic or Fabianski/Schmeichel for your GKs.

      Defence looks good.

Midfield four very strong even without Hazard.

Hard to grumble with your front three.

      9/10

Would appreciate if you could rate this team out of 10! Cheers.

    Ruddy, Hennessey
    Azpi, Cedric, Huth, O'Shea, Francis
    Hazard, Sterling, Ozil, Mane, Fletcher
    Rooney, Kane, Deeney

Hennessey is probably not starting so maybe Rudd is the better backup. There are better 4.5s than Bournemouth (even with rotation). Front eight look fine

Is Atsu worth owning or should I find the extra 0.5 for Ritchie?

    1. Ruth_NZ
      • 9 Years

In my careful opinion Atsu is very much worth having and may well outshine Ritchie.

Ritchie has a lot of set pieces though. That may marginally swing the value balance his way. But Atsu is a very good 5.5 option.

Cheers Ruth! Are you owning any promoted attackers? I know your feelings about Bournemouth and Watford defenders very well!

I will have Atsu or Ritchie. I may also have Bradley Johnson. Whether I will have both at the same time is less likely.

There is a sweet spot at 5.5 midfielder in my view. Atsu, Ki, MVG, Johnson/Redmond. I will probably use FTs to rotate that spot in my team based on form and fixture runs.

Jordan Ibe and Jack Grealish surely have to be in strong contention for that 5th midfield spot.

Ibe could be Sterling MARK II but there is a lot of competition in that midfield. But its only .5m over the standard 4th mid price so if you can save that elsewhere could be a great punt

I promise this is my last question today..:) 🙂 Can this team be any better

    Butland Ruddy
    Morgan Moreno O'Shea Azpilicueta Targett
    Henderson Hazard Özil Caz Wanyama
    Costa Rooney Wilson

    By GW 4
    Costa ----> Aguero
Ozil or Caz ----> 6.5 mid
    Targett ---> 4.0 Defender

I know that Morgan might not play first two games still prefer him over huth

    Speroni - Butland
    Azpi - Cedric - Ward - Huth - Turner
    Haz - Silva - Ozil - Milner - Ritchie
    Jrod - Rooney - Deeney

As long as there are no price changes, 1.0m ITB for Rooney > Aguero, Silva > Mata/Depay

    Thoughts much appreciated

    Schmikes. Fabianski.
    Ivan. Francis. Prodl. Huth. Ward.
    Haz. Hendo. Ritchie. Wanyama. 7.5?
    Kun. Rooney. Deeney.

Any thoughts re 7.5 or how to improve?

chadli, isnt a bad choice, i would downgrade hazard, and maybe choose silva or even mane, a lot more upside for that cost. and you can upgrade hendo and ritchie too. hazard isnt essential imo

and that's exactly when silva capitalizes, with aguero out, and the rest playing so poorly, silva rarely succumbs to the team's bad form. so i dont mind trusting him

What's everyone's thoughts about the bench boost?

Is anyone else (like me) thinking of using it GW1 to help get off to a good start, and designing their team a little so that the bench is strong for GW1.
