Scout Notes – Pre-season Round Up

Graziano Pelle nets again as Southampton cruise past Feyenoord. Jordon Ibe keeps Liverpol’s unbeaten pre-season record intact. Yaya Toure grabs City’s consolation against Real Madrid. Palace’s fringe players grab their chance to impress, West Ham squeeze through in Europe, whilst Kyle Bartley earns Swansea a draw at Reading.

Feyenoord 0 Southampton 3

The Saints’ triumph over Ronald Koeman’s former club served as the last chance for the players to catch the eye ahead of their Europa League qualifying tie against Vitesse on Thursday, giving us the clearest indication yet of how the south coast club will set up next term. Graziano Pelle netted the opener on his return to the Dutch outfit, slotting home from close range after Dusan Tadic rounded the keeper. Maya Yoshida doubled the visitors’ advantage at the 60-minute mark, before Juanmi capped off the scoring seven minutes from time.

Koeman deployed his charges in a 4-2-3-1 set-up, with Jordy Clasie and Victor Wanyama playing in front of a back four comprised of Cedric Soares, Jose Fonte, Yoshida and Matt Targett. Maarten Stekelenburg got the nod between the sticks, while Sadio Mane, Steven Davis and Dusan Tadic supported lone striker Pelle.

Although Yoshida, who comes in at 4.5 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, continues to impress, Koeman has reiterated his desire to strengthen at the back after fellow centre-half Florin Gardos was ruled out for “six or seven months” with a knee injury:

“That’s the priority, to bring in one or maximum two centre backs. It’s too small with Maya and Jose. Ok, we have Stephens, we have Turnbull, but they are young and still they have to improve themselves and that’s the point for attention at the moment, the centre back position.”

Elsewhere, Matt Targett, valued at just 4.0 in the FPL, appears to be an obvious short-term budget route into the Saints rearguard whilst Ryan Bertrand remains sidelined. Bertrand is expected to miss at least the first two league encounters, having suffered a knee injury earlier this month which is expected to keep him out for around six weeks. Targett appears to have seen off the challenge of new signing Cuco Martina to claim the left-back berth in his absence.

Birkirkara 1 West Ham 0

The Hammers narrowly escaped an early exit in the second round of Europa League qualifying, with Diego Poyet converting the crucial penalty after extra time. Slaven Bilic named a number of regulars in the starting XI but their chances of progression were hampered by the dismissal of James Tomkins on the stroke of half time, following an altercation with Serbian defender Nikola Vukanac.

Bilic lined up his team in a 4-2-3-1 formation from the outset, with Adrian in goal and a back four that included Joey O’Brien, Tomkins, James Collins and Aaron Cresswell. Cheikhou Kouyate and Mark Noble shielded the back four, while Kevin Nolan, Matt Jarvis and Morgan Amalfitano operated behind Mauro Zarate. Diafra Sakho was still suspended after also being dismissed earlier in the competition, whilst the likes of new boys Angelo Ogbonna and Dimitri Payet played no part. Winston Reid also missed out with a knock sustained in training.

Felda United 0 Liverpool 7

Malaysia XI 1 Liverpool 1

Danny Ings bagged a hat-trick as a Liverpool XI dispatched of the Kuala Lumpur outfit with consummate ease. Lazar Markovic lobbed the opposing keeper to claim a goal of his own, while Joao Carlos Teixeira delivered the moment of the match with a superb 40-yard chip. Youngsters Sheyi Ojo and Pedro Chirivella completed the scoring. Andre Wisdom, Kolo Toure and Mamadou Sakho also featured in the 60-minute match (30 minutes per half), as Brendan Rodgers opted for a youthful lineup.

Twenty-four hours later, Rodgers put out another XI which earned a hard-fought 1-1 draw with a Malaysia XI, concluding the pre-season tour. The match was lit up by Jordan Ibe’s superb strike for the Reds’ equaliser – a sublime left-foot finish into the top right-hand corner.

Ibe’s performance is timely in the light of Raheem Sterling’s departure and doubts over Roberto Firmino and Philippe Coutinho’s availability for the opening Gameweek trip to Stoke: Fantasy managers will be monitoring his prospects closely given his classification as a 5.0 midfielder in the FPL. Rodgers was certainly full of praise for the youngster’s display in his post-match summary…

“He’s been outstanding since he’s been out here and he’s staken a real claim to start the season in the team. [It was a] wonderful goal, I thought he was a threat all night with his pace, his quality and it was wonderful finish cutting inside and a great strike. He was very good and like I say he has been working very hard.”

Rodgers opted for a 4-3-3 set-up once again, deploying a back five of keeper Adam Bogdan, Nathaniel Clyne, Martin Skrtel, Dejan Lovren and Alberto Moreno. Jordan Henderson, James Milner and Lucas Leiva formed the midfield three, while Ibe and Adam Lallana provided the width behind Divock Origi. The Liverpool boss made a handful of changes very late on in the match, allowing many of his regulars increased pitch time. Despite this, Rodgers watched on while his side toiled throughout in what was an error-strewn display.

Lovren’s selection would indicate that he is currently above Sakho in the pecking order to sit alongside Skrtel in defence, while Moreno’s recall at left-back casts doubt on Joe Gomez’ claims for a starting berth, despite his encouraging displays in pre-season.

New signings Christian Benteke and Firmino are expected to make their first pre-season appearances in Liverpool’s final friendly against HJK Helsinki next weekend. Coutinho and Emre Can are also set to get their first run-outs in that fixture following their summer international exertions.

Manchester City 1 Real Madrid 4

Real Madrid’s first-string XI proved too much for City’s inexperienced rearguard as the La Liga giants were crowned International Champions Cup victors. Eliaquim Mangala missed out through illness and with Vincent Kompany attending the birth of his child back home, Manuel Pellegrini fielded youngsters Jason Denayer and Cameron Humphreys in between full-backs Bacary Sagna and Aleksandar Kolarov in a 4-2-3-1 set-up. Debutant Fabian Delph and Fernando filled the deep-lying midfield roles, with Yaya Toure, David Silva and Samir Nasri playing behind lone striker Raheem Sterling.

Toure netted the Sky Blues’ solitary goal, slotting a penalty into the corner after Sergio Ramos seemingly handled the ball outside the area. City ultimately struggled to find their groove on the attacking front, mustering just two shots on target throughout the encounter.

City’s disappointing afternoon was compounded with an injury to Delph, who was replaced after 18 minutes with a suspected hamstring complaint. Post-match, Pellegrini revealed the midfielder is set to be assessed:

“Unfortunately, it looks like Fabian has a problem with his hamstring – we thought it would be useful for him to play 45 minutes but he got the injury so it’s not the best news. We will have a more clear diagnostic from the doctor tomorrow.”

Pellegrini has also conceded he may well be without his South American contingent for the season opener at West Brom due to their exertions in the recent Copa America tournament:

“You have so many games throughout the year, that if you don’t give them 30 days after they’ve finished their internationals, it’s very difficult for them to work hard. It’s more difficult for Pablo Zabaleta, Martin Demichelis, Sergio Aguero and Fernandinho, they finished later, the first days of June, so they won’t have thirty days. I think when we return to Manchester they will start their pre-season, maybe they will not be involved in the first game but I am sure they will work hard and will be involved as soon as they can.”

Supersport United 0 Crystal Palace 4

The Eagles gained entry into the Cape Town Cup final at a canter, courtesy of four goals in the first period from Mile Jedinak, Chung-yong Lee, Jordon Mutch and Fraizer Campbell. Alan Pardew set out his charges in a 4-2-3-1 formation, with Wayne Hennessey supported by a back four of Martin Kelly, Scott Dann, Brede Hangeland and Pape Souare. Jedinak and Joe Ledley were stationed in the double pivot, while Jason Puncheon, Mutch and Lee comprised the trio behind Campbell. Yohan Cabaye and debutant Patrick Bamford entered the fray in the second half.

Speaking after the encounter, Alan Pardew confirmed that Palace are still looking to bolster their squad depth. In addition, the English boss revealed he rested a handful of key players as a precaution:

“We’ve looked to improve with the signings of Cabaye and Bamford, but I am still hoping to bring in more. We want more competition. Remember we had no Zaha, Bolasie or Murray today, they were carrying slight knocks. So there is plenty of competition in our squad.”

Reading 1 Swansea City 1

Jefferson Montero shone the brightest as a largely second-string Swans outfit were held to a draw at Wycombe’s Adams Park. The Ecuadorian winger terrorised Reading full-back Chris Gunter all evening with his blistering pace and trickery, strengthening his case for a starting berth against Chelsea when he set up Kyle Bartley for the equaliser.

Swansea lined up in a 4-2-3-1 formation, with Kristoffer Nordfeldt in goal behind a rearguard of Angel Rangel, Stephen Kingsley, Bartley and Franck Tabanou. Leon Britton and Jonjo Shelvey manned the midfield, while Nathan Dyer, Gylfi Sigurdsson and Montero pulled the strings for lone marksman Marvin Emmes.

A reminder that all these results, along with Scout Notes on formations and form players, is being captured on our dedicated page right here.

    Here's another (source fpl updates)

    Walcott vs Ozil:

With Sanchez a bit of a rotation risk at the start of the season due to his participation in the Copa America, many fantasy managers are looking for other options. If you are looking for Arsenal cover, then currently there are two popular choices; Theo Walcott (9.0m) and Mesut Özil (8.5m), but who is the better choice for your fantasy football side this season?

    Theo Walcott

Walcott accrued 51 points last season with 5 goals and 1 assist to his name, including his hattrick against West Brom. Although that may not seem like much, he essentially scored more goals than Özil did even though Walcott featured for the equivalent of around 5 full games as his season was blighted by injuries and being dropped while Giroud’s form was at its peak. However, towards the end of the season Walcott gave us a glimpse of what FPL managers who pick him can expect when he is firing on all cylinders – the fact that Walcott has been listed as a midfielder is a massive bonus since it is widely anticipated that he will feature up front for Arsenal.

    Mesut Özil

Özil picked up a total of 103 points last season, scoring 4 goals and assisting 6 in the process. Even though he did miss a great chunk of the season, it was very disappointing that he wasn’t even in the top 25 midfielders in terms of overall points scored. However, on his day Özil is definitely a very difficult player to deal with and even though he is not an out-an-out goalscorer, his vision at times makes him hard to play against so it is very likely that you would be rewarded with a significant number of assists if you opted with Özil, as well as the odd goal. Two other slight advantages that Özil has over most midfielders is that he is likely to keep a lot of clean sheets and in his two seasons in the Premier League he has never picked up a yellow card or been sent off.

    Who to choose?

Both of these players have high expectations from fans and the manager alike, as they are capable of world class performances. However both players still have to fully prove themselves, as many Arsenal fans have been disappointed with many of Özil’s performances whereas Walcott has not fully convinced everyone that he is the answer to Arsenal’s striker dilemma. Having said that, even though Özil’s place is arguably more nailed on in Arsenal’s starting 11 than Walcott’s, it is likely that Walcott will have scored more goals than Özil come May 2016, whereas Özil will probably have Walcott beaten in terms of assists. Therefore Walcott is arguably the better pick, but Özil at 8.5m (slightly reduced from last season) could prove to be one of the bargains of the season, while some may argue that Walcott’s price was inflated by that hattrick vs West Brom.

    Conclusion: Theo Walcott

If cazorla is going to be played centrally I would pick cazorla any day as he is more creative and adept at goal scoring than ozil. Might end up going cazorla over ozil after the community shield. With cazorla on penalties? I think he edges it for me

      Agree, but...

Depends also which team will have more CS. If Southampton reproduce defensive displays of last season, Cedric will have slight advantage. Also, better fixtures at the start of the season.

Liverpool have leaky defense, but still managed 14 cs last season, mostly when playing 3-4-2-1. We'll see what happens next season, but I think Mignolet, Moreno and Skrtel could be good options, if Liverpool finds again that stability at the back.

Maybe Cedric for the beginning, then go for Moreno later.

Walcott as a sub is deadly, got a few from the bench when he was fit, if walcott is fit. I'll have him in my team anyday regardless of rotation, he would always get minutes if fit

A bit of a repoat, but any thoughts?

    Cech, Butland
    Mertesacker, Kaboul, Yoshida, Jenkinson, Fuchs
    Hazard, Walcott, Mata, Tadic/Milner/Hendo, Redmond/Atsu
    Lukaku, Sakho, Pelle

    1.5 itb

Mata and Tadic nailed on? How about Ayew?

Forwards are a bit dodgy in the long run, but I'll reshape my attack heavily during first gameweeks. Lukaku->Kane depending on performance. Aguero in at some point, probably gw4.

Anyone got stats on the Bolasie/ Cabaye equation?

      8 years, 10 months ago

Bolasie last season was creating 1.46 chances per 90, Cabaye in his final season at Newcastle was creating 1.98 per 90.

Bolasie was having 2.24 shots per 90, Cabaye was having 3.77 shots per 90 in his final season at Newcastle.

Check out squawka's comparison matrix for more detailed stats.

Over the last few years, I liked the idea of Fantasy football, but never made it past the second or third week, as I would forget to do transfers and then think, eh what's the point I lost already. Last year was the first year that I played "properly" occasionally popping on here to see what peoples opinions were, and checking in on my team multiple times a week. I was very happy with my standing at the end of the year, and want to try and do just as well this year. I wondered if anyone would be interested in a kind of extended rate my team, I am looking for thoughts not only on the players I have chosen, but also the tactics I hope to use, and any other comments that you might think would be valuable to me. my current team looks like this

    Ruddy / Butland

    Azpilicueta, Mertesacker, Prodl/Francis, 4.0

    Fabregas, Walcott, Yaya, Mata, Henderson

    Costa, Pelle, Deeney

£0 in the bank for now.

My plan, and thoughts so far, go a little something like this.

Defence - I know my defence looks a littler weaker than the average, but I prefer to spread the money for my team out in this way, leaving more for my other positions! Azpilicueta for the cheapest way into the best defence in the league, maybe not many goals or assists, but hopefully clean sheets. If Mertesacker plays as much as I think he should, then he provides me with a good second defender, with the other 2 rotating home games for the third spot. I hope to find a 4.0 player for the last spot, to cover injuries or random selection issues.

Mid - I have decided to go all in on Midfield for the first couple of gameweeks. my idea here is to see which one or two are under performing, then trade them out for the best of the lower priced mids, who hit form. this should then give me the money I need to bring in Hazard and or Aguero.
I have spread my bets across pretty much all the teams where I see value or potential with no double ups apart from chelsea.

Fwd - probably my weakest area, until I bring Aguero in. I have put Costa, mainly as I am a Chelsea fan, and want him to do well. however I am not in love with this choice, and may well change it up as soon as I see something better.
Pelle is my "punt" although I dont think he is that much of a punt. Southamptons fixtures plus his quality just makes me want to go with him.
Deeney finishes off the team, a close choice between him and wilson, but neither will see much time on my first team anyway, so I went with Deeney.

Incase you didn't guess I'm going 3-5-2 for the first couple of weeks, changing to whatever fits best as I move forwards.

I would love to hear some feedback from the more experienced fantasy managers, on any aspect of my team/tactic that you think would help. looking forward to your opinions and comments,

    Gary.

Target as a short term 4.0 defender.

One issue I see is the only way to bring Kun in is to do Costa > Kun, what happens if Costa goes well? Personally I prefer to have more of my budget up front.

hmm, I guess the other option would be to transfer two mids down, and Pelle up, but I would have to take a hit, or take a little while to do it. I agree with you though, its a weakness.

Firstly, I'm not convinced on your goalkeepers. I assume they rotate well, but I reckon Stoke and Norwich will both be relatively porous, so not for me. However, there's never much in it, so it's not make or break either way.

I like your defence, although I think maybe upgrading the 4m to a 4.5m to add a rotation option, especially for if one of your defenders gets injured/dropped. You don't want to end up with a promoted team in a bad fixture.

In your midfield, I'm not too keen on Fabregas. I feel there's very little chance of goals, and I think he was fortunate to reach so many assists. At 9m, I think there's better options. Same with Yaya. I don't expect Aguero too miss to much time, and without penalties, I don't think he's a great option. Most of his good work is midfield control, and that doesn't translate to FPL points, so again I'd look elsewhere. Even Mata, I don't like him on the wing, and with Pedro rumoured, and plenty of options for the mad king, I'm not convinced.

Costa is preference, but I don't like Pelle. A conversion rate under 10% is pretty shocking, and he's still missing good chances in pre-season. Not for me that one.

I like the balance of the team.

thanks for your feedback, very valueable. I agree with a lot of what you have said, particular in regards to my midfield, but I love Mata 🙂 maybe change to depay if he performs. I like yaya and think, whilst he overperformed 2 years ago, he will outscore his total from last year. whilst fabregas doesnt get tons of goals I expect a lot of assists before christmas, when his season seems to disappear. like I said, Pelle is my gamble, I think he will start well

The fabregas part is what u would expect from a typical arsenal fan, fabregas have and would remain an assist king any day, perhaps he would be on 15 assists this season if he is not on form.

I don't hide the fact I'm an Arsenal fan, and I cant fighting against my own natural biases, but consider this; Silva and Fabregas both created 93 chances last season, but Fabregas ended up with 18 assists, and Silva ended up with 7.

That's a huge disparity, and one that you'd expect to equalise over the long-term.

so your saying based on the law of averages, Silva's chances are more likely to be turned into assists this year? not sure I can get behind that logic, and obviously I know Silva is amazing

ps, even as a chelsea fan, I like to shake the stereotypes, I like arsenal, and love watching them play football. I hope Walcott has the best season any player has ever had

I'd expect Silva's numbers to increase slightly, but Fabregas' assists to drop to around 10 for the season.

My comments weren't based from the stats, I just thought, watching Chelsea last season, that Fabregas seemed to be getting a disproportionate amount of assists for the chances he was creating in games, and the numbers happen to support this observation.

A bit like Herrera last year. You'd expect his goals to drastically decrease, because his goals were disproportionate to the amount of shots he was taking.

I think Fabregas' role has changed slightly from primary creator, to midfield controller. He could, in essence, be a vital part of Chelsea's season without getting any assists.

hmm interesting, I hope that doesnt happen. I am hoping on the fact that roughly 80% of his points have come before christmas for the last 6+ years so if that happens again, then I let him go, it could work out nicely.

PS, over the last few days I have really enjoyed your posts and comments, wanna make a league or something to keep in touch over the season?

Okay, I've settled on a team, would like some liverpool attacking coverage as a fifth mid in the form of Hendo/Milner in a 352 but at the minute I'm happy with this balanced 343:

    Panti
    Azpil Bellerin Shaw
    Hazard Walcott Depay Tadic
    Aguero Sakho Wilson

            http://www.mcfc.co.uk/News/Tour-2015/2015/Manuel-Pellegrini-exclusive-interview-MCFC/1437664263

Players within City's squad are at different stages of pre-season, with some later back after internationals and four key men are still recuperating from their Copa America exertions, with Pablo Zabaleta, Sergio Aguero, Martin Demichelis and Fernandinho set to return next week.

"I think in football it's so important to work hard but also resting has the same importance," the boss declared. "You have so many games throughout the year, that if you don't give them 30 days after they've finished their internationals, it's very difficult for them to work hard. As you say they started one week later but they should arrive in their best shape for the start of the Premier League.

"It's more difficult for the South American players because Pablo Zabaleta, Martin Demichelis, Sergio Aguero and Fernandinho, they finished later, the first days of June, so they won't have 30 days.

“I think when we return to Manchester they will start their pre-season, maybe they will not be involved in the first game but I am sure they will work hard and will be involved as soon as they can."
