Moving Target

Moving Target – Robbie Brady

After weeks of negotiations, Norwich finally completed the signing of Hull’s Robbie Brady for an undisclosed fee, believed to be £7 million. The Republic of Ireland international penned a three-year deal with the Canaries and joins Graham Dorrans, Youssouf Mulumbu and Andre Wisdom in making the move to Carrow Road this summer.

Speaking to the club’s official website, Brady spoke of his happiness after dropping a division with the relegated Tigers:

“The feeling of being wanted is something I’m so grateful to the manager for, and to everyone who’s been behind it. It’s another opportunity to play at the highest level, which is where everyone wants to be. I’ll relish it, and will hopefully play as many games as possible. It’s a new chapter for me at Norwich now and I’m raring to go.”

THE HISTORY

Born in Dublin, Brady was spotted by Manchester United scouts playing for local side St. Kevin’s Boys. He joined the club’s academy shortly after his 16th birthday in January 2008, and made his debut for the reserves just months later. Brady played under-18 and reserve team football for the next few seasons, before graduating to the reserves on a permanent basis for the 2010/11 campaign.

The Irishman was sent out on loan to Hull City ahead of the 2011/12 season, and went on to make 39 appearances during the campaign, registering three goals and a couple of assists. Brady returned to Old Trafford the following year but he only managed one senior appearance for United, however, coming on as a late substitute in a cup win over Newcastle in September 2012. An initial loan return to Hull was made permanent in January 2013, with Brady’s four goals and 13 assists in 32 appearances guided the Tigers from the Championship back into the top-flight.

Brady went on to star for the Tigers on their return to the Premier League, scoring three goals and providing one assist in 16 appearances, before undergoing surgery to cure a hernia problem, missing out on the club’s run to the FA Cup final, where they lost 3-2 to Arsenal. Last season, Brady made 27 league appearances, registering two assists, but the Tigers two-year stay in the Premier League came to an end as they finished 18th.

Having represented the Republic of Ireland at under-17, under-19 and under-21 levels, Brady made his international debut in a 4-1 win against Oman in September 2012, scoring once and setting up two of the goals. Brady has since amassed 12 caps for his country, scoring three times.

THE PROSPECTS

Having featured in several different positions for both Hull and the Republic of Ireland, Brady should provide Norwich boss Alex Neil with plenty of flexibility. Speaking about his big summer signing, Neil revealed Brady would primarily feature down the left flank:

“I’m really pleased to sign Robbie. As everyone’s aware, we’ve been chasing him for quite a while, He’ll be an absolutely perfect fit for us. Hopefully he can go on and show everything that we think he’s capable of. He’s dynamic, he’s got good energy to get up and down the pitch, and he’s got a fantastic left foot which makes him a real danger at set-pieces. He’s got a lot of things in his locker. It gives us good competition down the left side.”

In terms of tactics, Neil tended to operate with a lone striker system after taking the helm last year, rolling out 4-4-1-1, 4-1-4-1 and 4-2-3-1 formations. Bradley Johnson shone on the left flank, racking up 15 goals, but with Martin Olsson likely to miss the start of the season after undergoing shoulder surgery in the summer, Johnson has been occasionally fielded at left-back in pre-season. Brady also has plenty of experience in the position, particularly at international level, and offers an alternative until Olsson is ready for action.

The Swede is expected back shortly, though, and his return may well see Brady oust Johnson down the left of midfield. Certainly, he possesses greater pace than Johnson and is more of a natural wide man, with his cultured left foot able to deliver great quality into the box. Alternatively, Neil could utilise him centrally in the role in “the hole” behind a lone striker.

Coming in at 5.5 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, Brady sets you back the same as Johnson and Nathan Redmond, whose place looks secure on the right of midfield. Neil’s words suggest he’ll be handed a fair share of dead-ball duties, whilst Brady will be also hoping to climb up the spot-kick pecking order, having occasionally taken penalties for Hull.

The Canaries have been handed a kind start to their return to the top flight, with their first six home fixtures (CPL, STO, BOU, LEI, WBA, SWA) particularly friendly. Away trips to Sunderland and Newcastle in the opening nine Gameweeks are also reasonable match-ups, so Brady could provide Fantasy managers with a decent budget option. Given that he’s joined with just over a week until the season starts, he may need time to settle into his new surrounds before some consider taking the plunge.

To those going with the popular GK rotations chasing home clean sheets, this one is for you.

Out of the 140 saves Fabianski had last season, 84 of them were AWAY from home. (6HCS, 7ACS)
Out of the 112 saves Pantilimon had last season, 74 of them were AWAY from home. (5HCS, 6ACS)

    That is a significant difference.

May have to stick with one GK to take advantage of the new BPS system which awards saves. (2BPS/save)

So much for the Fabianski/Schmeichel rotation.

Disclaimer: I apologize if I'm not allowed to post this, I was going to use all GKs to illustrate my point but decided to use only 2 popular ones as my examples.

Panti averaged 3.9 saves away from home, and 3.4 saves at home
Fabianski averaged 4.4 saves away from home, and 3.0 saves at home. Not exactly a huge difference. At the end of the day, both GK's average 1 save point per game.

Me too, although I haven't analysed much at this point - I'm thinking of going for two 4.5 options who look like good value and then just winging it. Butland and Myhill are in my current draft - not a popular rotation on paper but the saves should make up for it.

I don't dispute the facts, only the conclusions.

I don't have Fabianski's details in front of me but to take a comparable example, Mignolet played 36 games last season for 149 FPL points. 72 from appearances, 23 from saves, 6 from BPs, 56 from clean sheets. Total 157 points less a handful for goals conceded and one own goal.

The only thing that will change next season is BPs and they are a very small element of the total. The changes will give GKs more BPs when they make numerous saves AND achieve a clean sheet. But the key FPL point-scoring element (apart from appearances) is and will remain clean sheets.

The fact that the GKs you mentioned had more saves away would seem to indicate that they had more shots to save away. That suggests less likelihood of clean sheets. No surprise really seeing that the 10-year trend is that there are 3 home clean sheets to every 2 away ones. It also seems to stick pretty close to the 10-year number season by season - over the last 5 seasons the home clean sheet quotient has varied between 58% and 63%.

Rotation is aimed to give you a statistically better chance of clean sheets - 20% better if you have 2 similarly capable teams and always play the home GK. Possibly you can improve on that by occasionally playing the away GK when they have a far better fixture.

Nothing is guaranteed, the 10-year average is based on 3800 games and a team only plays 38 in a season. Over such a small sequence you will get variation. But the recent summary I made about Villa's clean sheet history shows how it tends to even out over a longer period.

      2005/06 Home CS 8 Away CS 3
      2006/07 Home CS 9 Away CS 4
      2007/08 Home CS 5 Away CS 4
      2008/09 Home CS 8 Away CS 4
      2009/10 Home CS 7 Away CS 8
      2010/11 Home CS 7 Away CS 0
      2011/12 Home CS 4 Away CS 5
      2012/13 Home CS 4 Away CS 1
      2013/14 Home CS 4 Away CS 5
      2014/15 Home CS 4 Away CS 6

Total over 10 seasons: 60 home clean sheets, 40 away clean sheets, bang on the 3 to 2 average.

If rotation gives you a better chance of clean sheets (which it does) then that is what will help you most. For the majority of GKs the changes in the way BPs are calculated will have little effect in games when they don't keep a clean sheet anyway.

I think it's actually very close to being irrelevant for the type of goalkeepers most people are rotating. As you point out we can reasonably expect a 3:2 ratio of clean sheets, teams keep around 10 clean sheets during the season so we could expect 6 at home and 4 away. That's an extra 8 points at home. There will almost certainly be extra save points earned by goalkeepers on the road so even ignoring any bonus implications the home advantage is minimal.

Obviously, all of the above is an extreme generalisation and there will be considerable variance which means picking the right rotation will work wonders, just as picking the wrong one will be a disaster. It's why I think rotating goalkeepers is overhyped. Now defenders with their lack of save points are a different matter...

Yes, I agree with that more or less. The difference is quite marginal. If we take 10 as an average figure for clean sheets per season (usually it's nearer 12 but never mind) then strict home/away rotation (not that I am advocating it) should deliver 2 extra clean sheets (8 points) if it hits the statistical norm.

The average BP improvement for GKs as predicted by 3rd Turd is 4 points, though some of those would be in home games. So you might get an extra 5 points or so over a season from a h/a rotation that works neither well nor badly, just in an average way.

Is that extra 5 points worth chasing? Well, it depends what you have to pay for it. If you have Fabianski/Nordfeldt that costs the same as Fabianski/Schmeichel (perfect h/a rotation). So it's costing nothing.

Of course you could have Fabianski/4.0 but then you are one injury or postponed game away from having no GK. In addition you have less DGW coverage when the time comes.

I had Foster/Myhill for a long period last season. I'm not fixated on GK rotation (however it may seem). Like I said, the margins are small. But they are there.

Yes, I should have been clearer - my assumption of 10 clean sheets was based on removing the best teams from possible rotations which drops the average to nearer that figure. I don't imagine anyone has Courtois in a home/away rotation for example 🙂

It's the extra save points that I think have the bigger impact in neutralising the home clean sheet advantage - 1 point for every 3 saves. Over the course of a season they rack up pretty well.

            1. Ruth_NZ
              • 9 Years
              8 years, 9 months ago

They do rack up well. But the cases where more than one point for saves is awarded in a game are fairly uncommon. It seems fairly easy for a GK to be recognised to have made 3 saves (home or away). Reaching 6 is quite a bit rarer.

On your underlying point (rotation being more rewarding for defenders) I fully agree of course. With defenders you don't only have the 20% better probability of clean sheets, you also have a better chance of attacking points because teams generally score more goals at home as well.

I work in bioinformatics which basically uses statistics (along with other subjects) to analyze biological data, so I really find stats fascinating! Yeah I did fancy Depay myself.

I wouldn't touch Darmian with their CBs and GK issues. Neither DeGea or Romero had a pre season really

well, the system and approach won't change from last season.

This season, the manager has gone out and got players that he thinks fits the system. Big difference from changing a system.

The system will be the same but the new players may not be familiar with it. Darmian for example didn't play as part of a four last year. he was a wing back with three CBs.

Regardless the players are figuring each other out. They won't beat Spirs easily imo

Orrite chaps. Anyone want to give their thoughts on my team?

The price rises have made it so difficult to have a balanced squad if you want to include both Hazard and Aguero.

    Fab - Schwarz
    Azpi - Kosc - Bassong - Cedric - Mings
    Haz - Walcott - Cabaye - Sterling - Anya
    Aguero - Ade - Wilson

      Before...

      Targett-Caulker-Fonte-Cedric

      After...
      Bertrand-Caulker-Fonte-Cedric

I would be cautious of getting caulker as I believe Yoshida could outplay him in pre season and win the starting roll. Anyways, I wouldn't touch caulker after the whopping 5.5 price tag

Personally I think both Hazard and Fabregas is overkill on Chelsea (if there is such a thing). Walcott would be a calculated risk on your behalf, considering how we are not certain about his gametime, especially when the likes of Sanchez is already doing personal training to get fit ASAP.

Your front three is the same as mine at the moment, but I'd like to see maybe a downgrade on fab and spend in defense. Just my two cents.
