The Numbers Game – 2014/15 Review – Pulis’ West Brom

We continue our members articles looking back at last season with a review of West Brom’s displays under Tony Pulis. The Welshman took the helm after Alan Irvine was sacked – with the Baggies lying 16th in the Premier League on December 30 – and ultimately steered them to a 13th-placed finish, a full nine points clear of the drop zone. We’ll compare the attacking numbers from both managers’ spells in charge, and assess the similarities and differences in the statistics.

Irvine was a surprise appointment ahead of the 2014/15 season, having endured difficult spells in charge at Preston and Sheffield Wednesday. After managing a mere four wins from Albion’s first 19 matches, the Scot was relieved of his duties, with Pulis taking over on January 1, signing a two-and-a-half-year deal. Under the former Stoke and Crystal Palace boss, the Baggies secured seven victories from 18 matches, including wins against Man United and Chelsea in the final months of the season.

I watched every baggies game last season, he wasn't just a threat from set pieces (much more so than Lescott) but he actually gets forward a lot and creats a lot of goal scoring opportunities. For me he was the most consistent performer over the whole season and was overlooked for player of the season by many of our own fans. Pulis clearly rates him and loves tall guys in full back positions! He was also evidently used in many phases of play, clearly practiced on the training ground e.g diagonal long balls out of defense hoofed at him and he would challenge shorter left sided full backs for knock downs (creswell in the cup springs to mind). Chester does complicate things but I honestly think Chester will be biding his time for a centre half position as the season begins with McAuley surely in his last season at CB for us, he will be our future centre back alongside Lescott IMO. Lescott is still a great shout but safe, Dawson (if fit) is an awesome differential in my eyes.

If your going on minutes played, Lescott is safer (slightly). Dawson will NOT get dropped though, trust! He proved he can play there very well throughout half of the season, he wouldn't drop him for a centre half who can play there IF need be! When both Lescott and Dawson play, Dawes will rack up more points.

Why? Chester could well displace him at right back... Lescott is nailed as they get. Of course, the best way to go will be for us to decide that in a few weeks time.

So, Diego Costa is causing me the biggest headache this season. Is he

    A. Essential?
    B. Too expensive/High maintenance?

      Who would you rather captain?

      Hazard
      Costa
      Fabregas

The one you prefer is essential to you. The others are not essential as you will never captain them.

Falcao has got to be a problem for Costa, no? Mourinho will give the Colombian opportunities early in the season to show what he can do.

He's on standby pending his charity shield effort. For me he's kuns reserve. I don't want both of them so if kun isn't available and Costa is (ie possibly week one) then I'll have him

    A: Sterling + Costa + Deeney
    B: Fabregas + Kane + Sakho (+0.5 itb)

If I had Sakho my 5th mid would be Mahrez who I would put on just got GW 1. Otherwise I have 3 strikers.

Opinions on these two options? Thank you

Only one playing goalkeeper. If you stick with this strategy you need a premium one for the extra .5 like courtouis or Cech.

      🙁

      The official news said this

Enner Valencia sustained what initially appears to be a significant injury to his right knee and right ankle during Thursday's UEFA Europa League third qualifying round first leg tie with Astra Giurgiu.

The Ecuador forward will see a specialist consultant at a clinic in central London on Monday morning and an update will be provided following that meeting.

It is too early to put a timescale on how long Enner's recovery and rehabilitation period may be.

I quite like it. Although you're asking a lot from you front three in week two. I'd rather have Pele for first few fixtures if you're not going to change your middle striker.

Rodgers would be stupid not to start Benteke in GW1

Is he really going to play Ings/ Origi against a side that beat them 6-1 last game of the season?

Whatever about Firmino; he's coming into a new league and an away game to Stoke isn't exactly a sensible move to wean him in. Ibe should start imo, his pace should cause Stoke a lot of problems

Which player do you think will score more in GW1?

    a. Sterling (wba)
    b. Ozil (WHU)
    c. Ramsey (WHU)
    d. Fabregas (SWA)

Yeah, City could potentially go nuts. Which is making me think Sterling would be best. I have Costa, Haz, Wally, Caz.

    Draft 76!?!?:

    Myhill / Butland
    Koscielny / Cedric / Huth / Mings / Holebas
    Hazard / Ramsey / Chadli / Milner / £4.5m
    Aguero / Kane / Wilson

Really hurts the defence trying to fit in Aguero, no Chelsea in there 🙁

Any thoughts and inputs on my team.

    Stekelenburg and Schmeichel
    Ivanovic - Cedric - Cresswell - Azpi - Simpson
    Ozil - Hazard - Henderson - Ritchie - Morrisson
    Wilson - Giroud - Rooney

Im really struggling with a decision on Ivanovic, is he worth it? Got 0 in the bank now.

Good team imo, maybe too much arsenal in attack though, also I'd do:
      Ivan > Azpi
      Ritchie > Chadli

  19. Louis99

    8 years, 9 months ago

    Schmeichel - Schwarzer
    Cedric - Huth/Oshea - Cameron/Bassong

Right, my defence has been made on the basis that most of my points will come through the attack, is it really as bad as it looks or is it actually alright (not terrible)?

With the exception of GW5 Stoke have a nice set of fixtures from GW4 when City have Watford.......maybe downgrade Mane or Hendo to affelay/arnautovic or whoever seems in form.

The fact that Stoke have a bad fixture in 5 isn't a massive thing as Wilson has Norwich away and Sakho has Newcastle home in that GW
