The Numbers Game – 2014/15 Review – Pulis’ West Brom

We continue our members articles looking back at last season with a review of West Brom’s displays under Tony Pulis. The Welshman took the helm after Alan Irvine was sacked – with the Baggies lying 16th in the Premier League on December 30 – and ultimately steered them to a 13th-placed finish, a full nine points clear of the drop zone. We’ll compare the attacking numbers from both managers’ spells in charge, and assess the similarities and differences in the statistics.

Irvine was a surprise appointment ahead of the 2014/15 season, having endured difficult spells in charge at Preston and Sheffield Wednesday. After managing a mere four wins from Albion’s first 19 matches, the Scot was relieved of his duties, with Pulis taking over on January 1, signing a two-and-a-half-year deal. Under the former Stoke and Crystal Palace boss, the Baggies secured seven victories from 18 matches, including wins against Man United and Chelsea in the final months of the season.

Getting carried away JK. Believe it or not, there are possibly around four players in that Bournemouth lineup that 'could' start in GW1. It's not just Francis and the rest reserves....

      Francis/Surman are starters
      One of Pugh/Kermorgant could start
      Distin is 50/50

He's the CB that's under threat from Distin (LCB) though. It is Elphick (C) at RCB who is nailed, not Cook. 🙂

              I had a midfield of

              Hazard, Walcott, Sterling, Mane, Ritchie

But with Rooney and Sakho if I wanted to keep Ivan

I can only assume you have a few 4.0s

                        Because none will start

                        It's all about flexibilty.

If you get a 4.0 defender and a few have him and he doesn't start you could see high sales

Suddenly you have a 3.9 or even 3.8 defender in your team that you can't get rid off

I'd always rather start with 4.5s and if a 4.0 option emerges I can jump on

tbh mate I'd rather gamble on Sako and Pelle

If Ighalo turns out to be decent once the season starts it'll be easy to jump on him

If he turns out to be crap and you have him it's hard to get off.

True! I had actually considered a 4m defender when running Ivan Kos and 2x4.5.

You could go mane > Chadli and get Deeney plus a 4.5 d?

I understand your view, I was trying to insinuate that you can look at Mane as your 2nd/3rd striker.

I guess it depends where you want to sacrifice..

News of Benteke's potential absence in gw 1 has forced some changes to my team. Thoughts?

    Ruddy, Butland
    Azpi, Darmian, Huth, O'Shea, Francis
    Walcott, Hazard, Ramsey, Yaya, Wanyama
    Rooney, Pelle, Deeney.

Really not sure on Yaya and Pelle, any better suggestions?

You could try switching formation. I'm not a big fan of the striker options right now so I'm trying a 3-5-2. one option pelle -> Wilson and bring in some better players for Yaya and Wanyama

    ruddy (butland)

    rooney / benteke / pelle

    any suggestions welcome...

Re WFC so far this pre season, I'd say the all but guaranteed starters next week would be..

Gomes Nyom Prodl Cathcart (as his main rival for his position is suspended) Capoue Behrami and Deeney.

There's a question mark over the seemingly safe Holebas.

The club's Italian medical team very rarely risk anybody not 100% recovered from even a minor injury, so there must be doubt over Abdi and Jurado.

Berghuis could well start next week and be a decent differential but we wait to see how he fares on his starting debut tonight.

Ighalo I'd put at 80% to start next week just off Deeney but it's a slight risk.

He has now: 1 in 2 at Rovers! Unfortunately 2 in 1 tonight when back amongst friends.

Not convinced WBA style plays to his strengths - much as I love the bloke wouldn't be jumping on that bandwagon myself. WBA will score 100% of their penalties this year though.

Ok, made another draft and think I'll ask for opinions

    GK: Schmeichel (Mignolet)
DEF: Bellerin, Cedric, Bassong (Mings, Van Aanholt)
MID: Haz, Sterling, Milner, Ozil, Mahrez
    FWD: Costa, Pelle (Deeney)

I know Bellerin isn't as nailed as Kosc but he's more of an attacking threat and I think he'll play.
My GKs rotate a little so I'm happy with those for now anyway.

Other options for deeney? I could get a 5.0 instead of Mahrez and get someone worth 6.0.
I haven't seen Vardy mentioned much this year, he was great towards the end of the season. Ulloa too.

    Thanks!

Not sure it's worth benching Mignolet - May be find a 4.5m rotation with CS and free up 0.5m. Apart from that it's very good, but I'd choose hendo over Milner and then Deeney/Wilson/Jerome etc to Sakho?

      1. FPL_Gyarados

I know what you mean about benching migs and he will be my main GK but I like having a backup if he gets injured or my strikers/mids are against him.

You could downsize Mahrez to a 4.5 and upgrade Deeney to Sakho.
In any case I like Wilson over Deeney

      Hazard, Walcott, Ritchie, Henderson
