The Numbers Game – 2014/15 Review – Pulis’ West Brom

We continue our members articles looking back at last season with a review of West Brom’s displays under Tony Pulis. The Welshman took the helm after Alan Irvine was sacked – with the Baggies lying 16th in the Premier League on December 30 – and ultimately steered them to a 13th-placed finish, a full nine points clear of the drop zone. We’ll compare the attacking numbers from both managers’ spells in charge, and assess the similarities and differences in the statistics.

Irvine was a surprise appointment ahead of the 2014/15 season, having endured difficult spells in charge at Preston and Sheffield Wednesday. After managing a mere four wins from Albion’s first 19 matches, the Scot was relieved of his duties, with Pulis taking over on January 1, signing a two-and-a-half-year deal. Under the former Stoke and Crystal Palace boss, the Baggies secured seven victories from 18 matches, including wins against Man United and Chelsea in the final months of the season.

Any thoughts would be wonderful. After about 9 drafts I've came up with this:

    Myhill

    Mertesacker Azpi Cedric

    Hazard Ozil Depay Ritchie

    Rooney Costa Deeney

    Subs: 4.0 Huth O'Shea Wanyama

    Thanks in advance.

From pre season has cabaye been playing in a deep role? Is it worth to get him or we will be getting constant blanks as he must be cheap for a reason despite a big real life fee.

Cabaye only scored 1 goal in 39 matches for PSG. That's meh

Cabaye was only a squad player for PSG though. Pardew absolutely loves him and the Palace team will be built around him as the main playmaker and set piece taker. If you look at his points total in his final half a season with Newcastle it was very good (96 points in 1504 mins) considering his price.

with Kermorgant on pens at Bournemouth (a team that apparently get quite a lot of pens through diving lol), is there any particular reason people are picking Wilson over Kermorgant?

What are the latest predictions on Juan Mata. Will he:
    a) be in the starting 11 and star from the right, plus be on penalties, thus making him essential.
    b) be in and out of the starting 11, so not worth £8.5.
    c) be a non-starter until Man Utd's season starts falling apart and van Gaal admits he needs to reintroduce him as a no. 10 to score goals (after the failure of Rooney and Depay), thus making him essential after GW 8.
    d) none of the above.

    1. Bøss ⭐
      • 11 Years

I think he'll start and could still be on pens, but he's not essential by any means.

          Sorry 🙂

Elliott would be 4th/5th choice winger. Ryan likely to be backup in the long term with the defence looking like Wisdom/Whittaker - Martin - Bassong - Olsson.

Ryan would probably need an injury to force his way in long term...

    Good day,

I'll be rotating ritchie in certain games, I have a few nominees on the table.

A: Ki: some skepticism on whether he will replicate last seasons performances
B: larrson: indirect / direct free kick opportunities, although he can dissapear in games
C: Redmond: slifhtly underrated, It's my prediction that Brady will take the opposite winger slot.
D: brunt: early fixtures may be disheartening, in addition to a possible LB role.

Feel free to share, thanks in advance

I'm looking to rotate Redmond and Ritchie all season. May be a gamble but their rotation means neither will play the top 6 all season. I'd rather use the nor/bou rotation for this than go looking for clean sheets. The defensive rotation I'm using is swa / sun

Chelsea's style compliments ivanovic tendency to move forward in the pitch. If you notice the left hand side is mostly hazard covered, as William tracks back ivanovics advances on the right hand side. Not to mention, being at the end of indirect free kicks and corners.

      However,
If the additional 1 point can be put to better use elsewhere, you should probably do it.

    1.0M ITB

Would you keep the 1.0M aside or invest it now?

Just read this article on the guardian: http://www.theguardian.com/football/who-scored-blog/2015/jul/29/aston-villa-surprise-package-premier-league-season

Made me have a look at aston villa on FPL, and in particular their midfield looks like it could have a few potentially stand-out options. Was surprised to see Scott Sinclair at only 5.0, could prove to be a real bargain if he gets back into his swansea form. Any thinking he could be worth a punt?

Struggled to get in the team at the back end of last season.

If Sherwood had his way, Villa wouldn't have signed him. Was a clause of the loan that Villa had to sign him if they stayed up.

      Verdict: Avoid.

Cheers, that's a great tip. Will be sticking to the wanyama option as a 5th mid then. I'd love him to do well though, feel sad that his City days may have destroyed a promising career.
