Sky Sports Analysis – The Man of The Match Awards

In our latest pre-season article on the Sky Sports game, we turn attention to the most arbitrary of scoring methods – the Man of the The Match (MoTM) award.

While it’s often easy to overlook the significance of this accolade, it should be noted that MoTM is worth five points in the Sky Sports game – the same amount as a goal or clean sheet.

As the award is dished out by the Sky Sports match reporter, and can sometimes differ from the televised opinion, it is far more difficult to predict and quantify than likely goals or clean sheets.

Using the last couple of season’s data, however, we can look to highlight certain players and positions and their potential chances of securing future accolades.

TOP OVERALL RECIPIENTS

Let’s take a look at the players who gained five or more MoTM awards last season.

NameStartsMoTMStarts – MOTM %(MoTM 13/14)
Eden Hazard381232%9
Sergio Aguero30827%3
Harry Kane28829%n/a
David Silva32722%6
Yannick Bolasie31723%6
Sadio Mane24625%n/a
Philippe Coutinho32619%2
Alexis Sanchez34618%n/a
Jamie Vardy26623%n/a
Danny Ings35617%n/a
Raheem Sterling34515%5
Stewart Downing37514%2
Papiss Cisse11545%0
Gabriel Agbonlahor30517%2

Here are a few points to note:

  • Seven forwards and midfielders make up the top players here, with not a defender or goalkeeper in sight.
  • As a generalisation, it appears that creative midfielders with good dribbling skills and hardworking forwards (who can also score) look the most likely to receive the award.
  • Eden Hazard’s 12 awards was the highest amount ever awarded in a single season by Sky Sports – nine was the previous record, also set by the Belgian and a few others.
  • Papiss Cisse had the highest overall starts to MoTM percentage with 45%, although many of those came via appearances from the bench.
  • Yannick Bolasie, David Silva, Raheem Sterling and Eden Hazard are the only four players to have achieved over five MoTM awards in back-to-back seasons.
  • Sadio Mane and Harry Kane were awarded many MoTM awards in a relatively small window of time suggesting when they hit form they are likely to continue to rack up the five extra points.

AWARDS BY POSITION

Let’s now assess the entire player list broken down by position…

PositionTotal awards% of total MOTMTotal awards (13/14)% of total MOTM (13/14)
Goalkeeper308%236%
Defender5013%5715%
Midfielder19952%19952%
Forward10127%10127%

These stats help to back up our findings in our previous article on formations. The numbers underline that, once again, midfielders come out on top, followed by forwards, then defenders, and, finally, the lowly goalkeeper. In addition, these percentages mirror the previous season’s breakdown by position almost exactly – confirming that there is a trend at play.

LOOKING FORWARD

As MOTM awards are harder to predict than goals or clean sheets, we shouldn’t get too carried away and start picking players on the basis that they are MOTM “darlings”.

However, the allure of the extra five points really comes into its own when you combine it with the captain’s armband: if you’re torn between two candidates in any given Gameweek, then targeting the player a strong track record for the MoTM award is clearly the most sensible route.

Given the data on show, it’s fair to assume that we’re likely to see the trends continue. The top team midfielders, who play a big part in the final third should regularly receive MOTM gongs, along with forwards who not only score goals but put a good shift in, hassling the opposition’s defence.

For the lesser sides, it appears centre forwards are even more likely to receive MoTM if they win their side the points: Jamie Vardy, Danny Ings, Papiss Cisse, Gabriel Agbonlahor, Charlie Austin and Saido Berahino all secured the most MoTM’s for their individual sides last season.

THIS SEASON’S BENEFACTORS

So let’s try to predict a few of the likely benefactors for this season.

The table below lists my view on the key MoTM candidates by team:

TeamPlayer
ArsenalAlexis Sanchez
Aston VillaJack Grealish
BournemouthMatt Ritchie
ChelseaEden Hazard
Crystal PalaceYannick Bolasie
EvertonJames McCarthy/Romelu Lukaku
LeicesterJamie Vardy
LiverpoolPhilippe Coutinho/Jordan Henderson
Man CitySergio Aguero/David Silva
Man UnitedWayne Rooney
NewcastleGeorginio Wijnaldum
NorwichNathan Redmond
SouthamptonSadio Mane
StokeBojan Krkic
SunderlandCostel Pantilimon/Jeremain Lens
SwanseaGylfi Sigurdsson
TottenhamHarry Kane
WatfordTroy Deeney
West BromSaido Berahino
West HamDimitri Payet

Hopefully some of the above will repay my faith, although, with the ever-changing dynamics of the Premier League and the whims of the Sky Sports reporters dictating matters, I’m sure I’ll be reassessing my thinking as the Gameweeks roll by.

As always, I’ll be tracking the allocation of the MoTM awards and offering an updated view in my weekly Sky Sports article each and every Friday.

Hi guys what do you think about Jordon Ibe compared to Milner or Henderson, I have seen him place a couple of times this year and he seems great value

Yeh, I've got him as my filler - prolly won't make the WC cut. I think Liverpool will take time to bed in their new players so don't want to spend on the like of Tekkers or Milner yet.

I'd say he is far from nailed-on, though he will get his chances. Henderson, Milner, Coutinho and Firmino will all be nailed-on, as for the fifth mid they might play Can or Lucas if defensive, or Lallana or Markovic or Ibe if they go attacking.

Few of my friends who follow Liverpool closely really love him. Game time is the issue. Too weak as a 4th mid IMO unless he has nailed a starting role. Good be a good shout though

Like you said, 5 soton risky, but fixtures great. Mane for chadli maybe?

The rest looks good. You have 3 strong defenders so only really need one more playing defender (I'd recommend huth instead of Coates)

3 Saints is a risk, but with their opening fixtures a risk worth taking imo.
5 playing defenders - depends on your squad. You've got Anya who might not play (Watford have brought in a shedload of midfielders) and Wilson being new could blank.
What you've got is Azpi/Kos every week, and Cedric/Coates for rotation, so I'd say you're pretty much good to go.

Starting to really like the look of my team. Second draft after much consideration

    Ruddy (Butland)
Azpil - cedric - huth (Francis, ward)
    Sterling - hazard - Walcott - Ritchie
    Pelle - Rooney - lukaku

0 inb. Plan in place for Aguero

Defence: bit week, but fixtures rotate well and good attacking each threat from cheapies I feel
Mid: pretty strong I think, not too worried about playing Ritchie every week. Think he'll chip in for a couple attacking points and hopefully stays on pens
Forward: Lukaku has shown he can score against anyone, I think he'll have a huge year along with Rooney. Pelle is a placeholder at present for Aguero

I'll have a go at RMT other teams on this page too.

Cheers for input guys, and a score would be nice 😉

Non-playing fifth mid? Not a tactic I condone.

Lukaku's fixtures are horrible after gw1.

Not many alternatives to Lukaku and Pelle in their price range

Fifth mid is Anya sorry! Forgot to add that.

Lukaku on pens which are sporadic points as well and he tends to perform in his tough fixtures then his plum ones lol. A couple pints worth while I think

    Morning chaps,

    Couple of quick questions:

Who are the preferred 4.5 choices in the Sunderland and West Brom defenders? Are they certain starters?

And if you were to double up on one of the defences that do offer 4.5 starters which would it be?

    1. Jigger & Pony

Neither unfortunately. Sunderland situation really unclear with O'shea and Coates

Luka should do well however I am not planning too many changes after GW1 other than Rooney to Aguero. If I plan another transfer it could end up costing -4 or -8 pts due to injuries etc. GW2 will be one transfer only for me. Basically I am setting my team up ready to go after the Rooney to Aguero switch.

Here is a spreadsheet of comparing Ayew, Lens, Wijnaldum, Tadic, Chadli, Henderson and Herrera from past 4-5 seasons.

    Key Findings
    - Wijnaldum has the best goals/game ratio. This also stands out because he is the youngest.
    - Henderson/Herrara relatively plays too deep compared to more AM players.

    Disclaimer
    - Comparing results from different leagues is obviously not perfect.
    - You can't measure how they will adapt to new teams and new leagues. ex. Chadli had worse overall stats before coming over than Tadic but is making up grounds in PL.

Reasonable. Maybe Mane to Henderson/Milner or Pelle to Lukaku/Gomis to spread the returns.

Who says you've got 5 playing defenders? There's always a rotation / injury risk.

If you could, but he might play too, in which case - no problem!

I would and I'd downgrade Cedric, but I like your three strong defenders too.

        Rutland
        Azpil Cedric Huth Francis Sun
        Hazard Sterling Walcott Chadli Wanyama
        Rooney Pelle Sakho

I have Sterling Giroud Mane over Hazard Chadli Sakho

Yeah, took a long time coming. The prices esp in defence and midfield seemed to give a lot more equal options and initially led to quite diverse RMTs. However, in the last day I've detected a distinct coalescing into a template.

Right then. My final dilemma is keeper choice. It's a bit of a dichotomy because at 4.5 the keepers I rate best play for promoted teams like Boruc and Ruddy, while the keepers for last year's PL teams either had poor defensive form like Krul and Speroni or have little question marks about their place like Myhill and Butland.

I've pretty much narrowed it down to:

    Boruc /Ruddy:

AVL sun STO LEI BOU SUN whm WAT new WBA sot NEW swa EVE wat EVE wba CPL AVL lei WHM NOR sun cpl avl WHM wat SOT new SWA wba NEW avl SUN WAT eve WBA eve

    Schmeichel/Butland:

SUN whm nor bou AVL LEI BOU nor swa WAT wba WAT new sun swa whm CPL MUN eve BOU NOR avl

    Ruddy/Butland:

CPL sun nor WBA BOU LEI BOU LEI new WAT new SWA sot sun wat whm CPL tot AVL wba NOR bou lei TOT avl bou AVL NEW swa SOT wat NEW cpl SUN WAT SUN cpl WHM

    Krul/Butland

LIV swa nor WBA whm WAT BOU avl NOR WAT STO bou LEI sun LIV whm AVL EVE wba wba NOR WHM wat eve WBA bou AVL NEW BOU lei SUN nor liv SWA liv SUN avl

    Boruc/Krul

AVL swa whm LEI nor WAT sto WAT NOR sun STO NEW LEI cpl LIV MUN AVL CPL wba lei WHM NOR wat cpl WBA STO wat sto BOU SWA SUN nor avl SWA liv CPL WBA TOT

Not necessarily, although you can't expect much of the promoted team, whereas Stoke have some pedigree.

In reality if Stoke haven't been scoring or Norwich have been keeping it tight then you can play the form keeper when the time comes.

I know Bellerin is doing extremely well, but we came very close to signing one of the most talented young defenders in Serge Aurier last year.

He is so imposing just at 22, and even scored a goal yesterday in PSG's Trophees de Champions win!

I have 3 4.5 defenders, thinking about upgrading one to 5.0.. but not sure who. WBA have horrible opening fixtures, NEW aren't good until GW6, SWA are ok, SUN fixtures are looking the best. Is PvA worth it?

    5th mid option:

    1. Wanyama +0.5mil
    2. Sinclair
    3. Other 4.5 + 0.5mil

Considering keeping 0.5 in the bank if I stick with a 4.5

Defence is too weak. You don't want to depend on Sunderland away. Upgrade O'Shea at the expense of a slightly cheaper (yet busier, for save points) keeper.

        • 8 Years

But you need a big club in your defence. I can't go without chelsea defence. O'shea is fine & Targett was gonna start actually. Playing Newcastle & Is playing round 1.
