Sky Sports Analysis – The Man of The Match Awards

In our latest pre-season article on the Sky Sports game, we turn attention to the most arbitrary of scoring methods – the Man of the The Match (MoTM) award.

While it’s often easy to overlook the significance of this accolade, it should be noted that MoTM is worth five points in the Sky Sports game – the same amount as a goal or clean sheet.

As the award is dished out by the Sky Sports match reporter, and can sometimes differ from the televised opinion, it is far more difficult to predict and quantify than likely goals or clean sheets.

Using the last couple of season’s data, however, we can look to highlight certain players and positions and their potential chances of securing future accolades.

TOP OVERALL RECIPIENTS

Let’s take a look at the players who gained five or more MoTM awards last season.

NameStartsMoTMStarts – MOTM %(MoTM 13/14)
Eden Hazard381232%9
Sergio Aguero30827%3
Harry Kane28829%n/a
David Silva32722%6
Yannick Bolasie31723%6
Sadio Mane24625%n/a
Philippe Coutinho32619%2
Alexis Sanchez34618%n/a
Jamie Vardy26623%n/a
Danny Ings35617%n/a
Raheem Sterling34515%5
Stewart Downing37514%2
Papiss Cisse11545%0
Gabriel Agbonlahor30517%2

Here are a few points to note:

  • Seven forwards and midfielders make up the top players here, with not a defender or goalkeeper in sight.
  • As a generalisation, it appears that creative midfielders with good dribbling skills and hardworking forwards (who can also score) look the most likely to receive the award.
  • Eden Hazard’s 12 awards was the highest amount ever awarded in a single season by Sky Sports – nine was the previous record, also set by the Belgian and a few others.
  • Papiss Cisse had the highest overall starts to MoTM percentage with 45%, although many of those came via appearances from the bench.
  • Yannick Bolasie, David Silva, Raheem Sterling and Eden Hazard are the only four players to have achieved over five MoTM awards in back-to-back seasons.
  • Sadio Mane and Harry Kane were awarded many MoTM awards in a relatively small window of time suggesting when they hit form they are likely to continue to rack up the five extra points.

AWARDS BY POSITION

Let’s now assess the entire player list broken down by position…

PositionTotal awards% of total MOTMTotal awards (13/14)% of total MOTM (13/14)
Goalkeeper308%236%
Defender5013%5715%
Midfielder19952%19952%
Forward10127%10127%

These stats help to back up our findings in our previous article on formations. The numbers underline that, once again, midfielders come out on top, followed by forwards, then defenders, and, finally, the lowly goalkeeper. In addition, these percentages mirror the previous season’s breakdown by position almost exactly – confirming that there is a trend at play.

LOOKING FORWARD

As MOTM awards are harder to predict than goals or clean sheets, we shouldn’t get too carried away and start picking players on the basis that they are MOTM “darlings”.

However, the allure of the extra five points really comes into its own when you combine it with the captain’s armband: if you’re torn between two candidates in any given Gameweek, then targeting the player a strong track record for the MoTM award is clearly the most sensible route.

Given the data on show, it’s fair to assume that we’re likely to see the trends continue. The top team midfielders, who play a big part in the final third should regularly receive MOTM gongs, along with forwards who not only score goals but put a good shift in, hassling the opposition’s defence.

For the lesser sides, it appears centre forwards are even more likely to receive MoTM if they win their side the points: Jamie Vardy, Danny Ings, Papiss Cisse, Gabriel Agbonlahor, Charlie Austin and Saido Berahino all secured the most MoTM’s for their individual sides last season.

THIS SEASON’S BENEFACTORS

So let’s try to predict a few of the likely benefactors for this season.

The table below lists my view on the key MoTM candidates by team:

TeamPlayer
ArsenalAlexis Sanchez
Aston VillaJack Grealish
BournemouthMatt Ritchie
ChelseaEden Hazard
Crystal PalaceYannick Bolasie
EvertonJames McCarthy/Romelu Lukaku
LeicesterJamie Vardy
LiverpoolPhilippe Coutinho/Jordan Henderson
Man CitySergio Aguero/David Silva
Man UnitedWayne Rooney
NewcastleGeorginio Wijnaldum
NorwichNathan Redmond
SouthamptonSadio Mane
StokeBojan Krkic
SunderlandCostel Pantilimon/Jeremain Lens
SwanseaGylfi Sigurdsson
TottenhamHarry Kane
WatfordTroy Deeney
West BromSaido Berahino
West HamDimitri Payet

Hopefully some of the above will repay my faith, although, with the ever-changing dynamics of the Premier League and the whims of the Sky Sports reporters dictating matters, I’m sure I’ll be reassessing my thinking as the Gameweeks roll by.

As always, I’ll be tracking the allocation of the MoTM awards and offering an updated view in my weekly Sky Sports article each and every Friday.

Ighalo is the type of player you'd get in after the first few weeks if he's starting/playing well. I'd start safe.

Because he is benched quite a lot. Also guess too many people have seen players go well pre-season to then either not play or forget how to kick a ball. Young (man utd) last season is a prime example of this.

Nice team, do you have an outline plan to bring in Aguero? I don't see an obvious two tranny route.

I basically have the same team and dropped Huth to a 4.0 to allow Walcott to 7.0 and Rooney to Aggers, but I'm not 100% on it.

Azpi / Cedric / Jenks rotating with Mings looks fine for the first 6 or so to me, not sure I need an additional playing defender.

Massive rotation risk makes him a very punty 4th mid, and an expensive flakey 5th.

Normally I don't give a stuff about the Community Shield but this one looks like it could have some real fpl significance for a change: lots of potential picks in both sides and a bit of needle between the managers, should be competitive I reckon!

For those looking at Gomez and Mama Sakho, here's what Rodgers had to say.

Gomez looks likely to start. Lots of doubt over Sakho.

On Gomez - "I wouldn't have any issues [with playing him against Stoke]. You've seen from my time here that irrespective of the age of a player, it's about the quality and personality. Whether they are 17 or 27, if I think they are ready, I'll play them."

On his first choice center back pairing -"It's not something I've totally decided upon yet. I'll sit down with the staff and we'll look at it next week. The key is getting consistency in that area of the field," Liverpool manager said.

"Your two centre-halves are critical. They are the tactical decision makers in the game. That balance is important for us this season. We had too many defensive changes last year and that's not something that I like. Hopefully this season we'll be more consistent as a back four."

Both left sided though. Lovren was a really bizarre signing when they already had Sakho.

Sakho should be our first pick at CB at any cost. I'm not sure what Brendan sees in Lovren, to give him infinite second chances. Just his stubbornness to prove that his wonder blunder signing was after all a genius one.

As for Sakho + Lovren, I don't think BR likes the idea of 2, left footed CB pairing.

        1. Klopp's Kids
          • 10 Years

Lovren can play either side. I just think Sakho has to be in there. Skrtel and Lovren are awful together.

Hmm. To me that seems that there will be less rotation for CB's, and thus Sakho, as by far the best CB with and without the ball, should be nailed on. Of course, you never know with BR, it may be that he sticks to Lovren-Skrtel.

Anyone else struggling with their third striker?

Like most got Rooney and Sakho, but then....

    Giroud - meh
    Lukaku - poor fixtures
    Costa - rather have Hazard
Pelle - still don't trust him, rather have Mane
    Kane - too pricey

The one I feel keenest on is Deeney, which makes me think 352 may be the way to go?

What do you think? (Obviously will get Aguero in GW 4 latest)

    Hazard Walcott Sterling Mane Milner/Chadli/Siggy
    Rooney Sakho 4.5m.

    All opinions welcome.

Ha ha ok. Basically, if I do an article which includes member stats can / will it be made member only?

Very unlikely. Very occasionally a community piece will make it onto the front page and then it would be possible, but the ones on the tag won't be members only. If you use only a couple of key member stats in the piece then Joe and Paul might pass it for publication anyway - I used to use a few members stats here and there when I was writing pieces and as long as I didn't go mad with it they'd usually make it to the published article.

Hmm OK thanks. So, do I go full on stats and aim for a front page article or go easy on the stats and resign myself to Community?

Whatever you do, just don't share members stats with the non members.

Well, this is my point you see. I need to use some stats for the article I have in mind. And I think it will be a very useful article.

I wouldn't think about it in quite those terms, we're entering a very busy period and the article schedule will be pretty well planned already so if your piece doesn't make the front page it may not necessarily be an indictment of its quality!

I think they've played a blinder on the pricing this year, such a wide variation of strong teams possible.

I think that will wear off a few weeks into the season when the standouts in each bracket emerge and the best team is so affordable.

Same every season IMO. I think everyone just gets used to being able to have a great team (for the reason you said) and then it seems hard when they realign the prices for the new season.

But that's the thing, I don't think it's hard to have a good team this season as outside of the elite scorers from last season everyone is priced so cheap. Well besides the lack of 4m defenders that is.

It's tough this season is deciding which players to choose and which ones to leave out as there's so many affordable options.

I agree - I think my team is very good.

Only problem is that it hard to have Hazard, Sanchez and Aguero right now - even just Hazard and Aguero is tough IMO.

Really? Struggling to find budget defenders and midfielders. Needs more research probably.

Aguero Costa Hazard Sanchez and half the budget is gone.

Answer to the question might be that PL is loaded with silly amounts of money, especially compared to other big leagues, so just about every team is able to by top quality players and therefore we have too much choices.

True, lots of options will make it interesting. Coupled the massive rule changes, it's almost as if it's a new game altogether this year.

Meanwhile, this is super annoying trend of development. I'm a big fan of teams building mainly on their own youth and making as few transfers as possible, and hate to see PL clubs just buying all the other leagues empty of young talent. Many of these players will ruin their careers, for sure. It's hard to say already who, but I'd say that some who have joined Aston Villa or Swans are good guesses. Can't wait for the new home grown rules to come in force! It will just be very annoying for the crop of talented foreign players who just signed for big money this summer and can't fit the teams next year with new restrictions and have difficulties in finding new clubs that can afford their wages and end up playing in China or Russia for that. So much talent will be wasted...
