Scout Picks

The Scout Picks – New for 2015/16

Having experimented with a new system for the Scout Picks last season, once again, we’re tweaking the setup for the forthcoming season – hopefully for the better.

We’re still giving you, the Fantasy Football Scout community, the opportunity to get involved and take on our lineup.

We have, however, decided to scrap the weekly vote which, at times, could sometimes result in spam comment posting and the occasional exploit.

Instead, we’re turning to a lottery to select a community member to select their picks in each Gameweek.

If you wish to submit a Scout Picks squad and be the community’s champion in the forthcoming Gameweek, you’ll need to submit your details via this form.

Twenty-four hours later we’ll announce the selected champion and he/she will then have until Thursday afternoon to submit their picks.

This will then go head-to-head with our squad, which will be selected using the old traditional method of argument and discussion behind the scenes – at which point I’ll put my foot down and pick Leighton Baines regardless. So there will only be one set of Scout Picks from us this season.

We’re also planning a couple of new articles, centred around the Scout Picks.

We’ll bring you a Provisional Scout Picks selection on Tuesday detailing our early thinking. This article will also be used to announce the community champion for that week.

We’re also planning a new ad-hoc article that will reveal some of the discussion and tension going on behind the scenes, as a way of letting you get a view of our own selection process and any particular dilemmas in a given Gameweek.

Then, on Friday, you’ll get the final Scout Picks from us and your champion.

We’re still offering a prize alongside this process. The community member who beats our picks by the biggest margin over the campaign will win a £100 Amazon Voucher and a place in our Contributors and Moderators League for the following season.

How Do I Get Involved?

Would-be community “Champions” must put themselves forward by submitting their details on the Scout Picks Champion Entry form.

We will create a community article on Monday each week to announce that applications are open and link to the form.

An applicant will be chosen at random the following day and announced in our Provisional Picks article.

The successful community “Champion” must supply their final Scout Picks XI to Jonty (jonty@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk) by 3pm on Thursday of that week. They have the option to tweak their Picks until 3pm on Friday.

Community Champions may seek the help and advice of others on the site once announced.

Should the community “Champion” fail to provide an initial or final Scout Pick selection, then an “Assistant Manager”, chosen by us, will gain control of the selection to represent the community for the Gameweek in question.

What do I need to do if I become the Community Champion?

You must select an Fantasy Premier League squad of 11 players in any valid FPL formation and using the regular FPL rules – eg: only three players per team permitted.

We will set a budget for your XI. Initially, this will be 82.5 and will increase as the season progresses and prices rise.

You may consult with the community in order to gain advice on building your Scout Picks for the Gameweek.

You do not need to submit any test to accompany your Picks but we may use a contribution should you wish to submit up to 200 words.

How Will the Scout Picks Be Scored?

We will total up the FPL points for both our Scout Picks and the community’s Picks.

No captain will be applied.

No chips will be applied.

Are there any other rules?

Yes there are. Plus, we reserve the right to make up some more along the way once we get started.

For now, we’re stipulating the following:

  • Community Champion Nominations must be registered users on Fantasy Football Scout and must not be under moderation at the time.
  • Scout Picks cannot be posted as a nomination on behalf of another user.
  • Nominees must be willing to supply a valid email address for contact throughout the selection process.
  • Any nominee or Champion voted by the community, who is later put under moderation, will not be considered for that Gameweek.
  • We reserve the right to change and overrule the selection of the chosen Community Champion at anytime.

We are now accepting applications for Gameweek 1 so head over to the entry form if you fancy getting your name in the hat.

You have until 2pm on Tuesday to get your application submitted.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

I wish the scout picks didn't go with an extra striker in the sub position (when already including 3 strikers). Wonder whats that about?

Also don't understand the lack of captain choice.

That's one that has had some serious debate but the lack of captain is here to stay (for a least one more season)

True, also the captain poll doesn't often include the likes of Kolorov, Ivan much, defenders can be good picks.

An alternative selection. If we get an alternative for DEFs and MIDs we should get one for FWDs as well. More flexibility.

They're not strictly speaking meant to be subs - more just an insight into the players who almost made the cut.

Funny how often their 4th striker pick is a good one. There possibly should be a 1st sub slot in the team; can be significant as we saw with Boyd last year.

Can someone help me out. I'm a bit clueless on the best 4.5m defender options. I'm hearing Mings and Huth and Yoshida but who would you go for if needed three 4.5m defenders?

Predicting goals (or assists) for defenders is pretty much impossible. Of course it's possible to get lucky, but it's never a good idea ante post.

Nice - but pick a different 4.5m midfielder, because with Wanyama's ownership %, there's a strong possibility of him losing value.

Anyone thinks Romero is an absolute gem for 5.0 ? Since Marca has published on the front page that DDG is going to Real before this week ends. Not sure if there was a discussion about this earlier

We don't know if the United team itself is a gem this year, so I'd wait

If he goes, pretty sure a new 1st choice keeper will be bought. Think Romero's only a Valdes' replacement

Hmmm, tbh i really think Romero is the new number one. He is not class as DDG, but i think will be a decent option. Valdes wont be between the posts due to the issues he had with LVG.

Well, im not a Man U fan by any means, but i think for 5.0 is a good bet if DDG goes before the first week instead of Panti / Stekelenburg or someone who is doing 5.0/4.0 . Opening fixtures are really nice tho

Also like the changes to the Scout Picks, Mark. I preferred the old method of one pick from the scout rather than the multiple ones and think the Tuesday early thinking article is a great addition.

Why do we hate rotating attackers? Considering rotating Sakho and Wilson in a 3-5-2. Views?

I think at this stage of the season, you want as much money in your 1st XI as possible. When it gets to Xmas / New Year, then you want some depth on your bench. You also have more money then.

I captained a defender one time. It was Evra 2 seasons ago, and he got injured in the warm up, didn't play and my Vice Captain scored. Good times.

If anyone's interested in the RMT tool and trying to compare goalkeeper combinations:

Currently same club combinations are undervalued by RMT. For example if you have Ruddy/Rudd i.e. both Norwich goalkeepers:

The advantage of doing same club combination this is that if Ruddy doesn't play, Rudd's probability of playing goes up massively. Compare this to if you had Schmeichel/Rudd. If Schemichel doesn't play, Rudd's probability of playing stays very low and having him on your bench is not very useful.

RMT currently isn't programmed to realise that if Ruddy doesn't play, then Rudd is a shoe-in to play.

For now, if you have a pair of same club keepers and you want to compare that GK combo to another, I would add around 90% of the back-up keepers score to your weekly predicted score. (assuming you have a situation with one GK is big favourite to play over the backup and there's not a 3rd keeper who's just as likely to play!)

This is also true of combos like Kolarov and Clichy, which I don't think many FPL managers actually go for. If one player misses out, the other one is much more likely to play. It's slightly more complicated however because you may have the situation that you should play of them, play one of them and bench the other or bench both.

We'll let you know if and when we manage to incorporate this into the model.

This doesn't make much sense to me.

1.) Goalkeepers are rarely rotated, therefore the variance in relation to selection probability is likely to be very low in terms of first choice keepers.

2.) The second choice goalkeeper only has any value if the first choice keeper IS injured. You could just as easily say that the same club strategy is overvalued by 100% of the back-up keepers score.

      1. Pinturicchio
        • 11 Years

RMT gives a predicted score value for both keepers, but what it predicts for the second-choice goalkeeper is too low, because it's predicated on the fact that he is second-choice in the present. It doesn't account for the future possibility that he would be first choice. As a result, it doesn't capture the potential rotation value properly.

Conversely it also assumes that the first choice goalkeeper will remain first choice though, right?

          Pr1 + Pr2 = 1
Being total probability that either goalkeeper will play (materially equal to one)

          Po1 = Po2
Being that there is not a significant variance of points each GK for same team would obtain in the same fixture.

          Pr1Po1 + Pr2Po2 = Pr1Po2 + Pr2Po1

          Or am I missing something?

Yes, you are missing something! 🙂 The points given on RMT take into account each player's probability of playing. Thus, Rudd's expected score is much lower than Ruddy's.

If you were a member you would understand! 😉

I understand what you're saying but can't figure the logic out in my head yet. Unless the probabilities of Rudd and Ruddy playing do not total one...

Maybe I'll have to become a member to see things written down.

          Well explained! I'll add this:

What you need to realise is that the strength of the bench is taken into account in RMT. The stronger your bench, the better your weekly scores. You'd much rather have a stronger bench than a weak bench. If you've got Ruddy in goal, you'd much rather Rudd on your bench than Schwarzer and currently RMT doesn't see any difference, but it should.

I had thought about this before (I went with all West Brom keepers at the end of last year). Interesting to see what would happen if it were taken into account.

Trying to save myself the -4 here

Wanted to bring Aguero in this way: Rooney + Sterling --> Aguero + 7.0
Because there are many good options in the 7.0 bracket

As it turn out I am 0.5 short to do that
Should I do Williams --> Coates already or start with Williams and get a nailed on Sunderland defender later in the game?
