Spot the Differential – Gameweek 2

Our usual look at a trio of low-ownership Fantasy assets arrives a little earlier than normal, due to this evening’s 6.45 pm deadline. We’re backing a couple of midfielders from Spurs and Sunderland, whilst Villa’s weekend match-winner comes into consideration for their home encounter with United.

Nacer Chadli

Despite tallying an impressive 11 goals and six assists last term, Nacer Chadli (7.0) is currently owned by just 7% of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers, with most preferring Liverpool duo Jordan Henderson (22%) and James Milner (10%) in that price bracket. Given Spurs’ favourable schedule beyond their season-opener at Old Trafford (STO, lei, EVE, sun, CRY), it’s perhaps surprising that the Belgian winger hasn’t attracted more substantial investment, with many looking to the likes of Dimitri Payet and Andre Ayew as alternatives.

Poring over his underlying statistics, Chadli’s goal conversion rate (20.4%) in the 2014/15 campaign far surpassed team-mate Christian Eriksen’s (10.3%) and any other Spurs midfielder. Furthermore, his goal frequency (one every 228.5 minutes) ranked fourth among the league’s full roster of midfielders, with Alexis Sanchez (192.4), Sadio Mane (204.3) and Kevin Mirallas (213.7) claiming the top three spots.

Chadli ended the previous campaign in a strong fashion, netting three goals in six starts at a time when Eriksen struggled for returns. Considering that weekend opponents Stoke carded just four clean sheets away from home last season and lack the commanding presence of Ryan Shawcross in central defence, the former FC Twente wide man could well kick start a similar run at the start of this campaign.

Jeremain Lens

In light of the news that Adam Johnson will be sidelined for two months with a shoulder injury, even greater emphasis has been placed on Jeremain Lens to provide a spark from the wings. The Netherlands international certainly got his Black Cats career off to a promising start, serving up the cross for Steven Fletcher’s strike at Leicester.

Lens chalked up five goals and ten assists across 18 starts for Dynamo Kiev last term, underlining his knack for accruing attacking returns – indeed, he has produced double figures for assists in four of his last five seasons. There are signs of his influence already beginning to emerge on Wearside, given that he ranked joint-fourth for penalty box touches (four) among all midfielders last Gameweek and posted more successful passes in the final third than any team-mate.

Priced at 6.5, Lens could profit from Sunderland’s excellent run of fixtures (NOR, SWA, avl, TOT, bou), with the home tie against Spurs representing the only top-six side on their agenda. In the short term, the fact that the Canaries placed second for big chances conceded (three) last Gameweek enhances our faith in Lens delivering attacking returns as Dick Advocaat’s side look to recover from last week’s mauling at the King Power.

Rudy Gestede

Debutant Rudy Gestede instantly endeared himself to the Aston Villa faithful, entering the fray as a second-half substitute to nod home a winner against Bournemouth. Such exploits rarely go unrewarded and manager Tim Sherwood looks inclined to agree, having alluded to the prospect of Gestede earning a start when Manchester United pay a visit on Friday.

From a statistical standpoint, the former Blackburn Rovers frontman proved far more impactful than lone striker Gabriel Agbonlahor – who lasted the distance at the Vitality Stadium. Gestede racked up more passes (16) than Agbonlahor (14) – despite clocking 59 fewer minutes – while he also mustered as many shots on goal (two) as the fleet-footed marksman.

Although Man United opened the campaign with a home shut-out against Spurs on Saturday, they registered just five clean sheets away from Old Trafford last term. It’s worth noting that since the start of 2013/14, Gestede’s total of 20 headed goals is five more than anyone else in the England’s top four divisions – given that he’s likely to be up against Daley Blind, it’s certain that Sherwood will be tasking his wide men to get plenty of crosses into the box.

Furthermore, the Villains have been bested just once in their previous quintet of home encounters under Sherwood, offering incentive to invest ahead of an enticing batch of fixtures (cry, SUN, lei, WBA).

With all this positivity out there I figured I might as well add to it.

The best thing about keeping Walcott is you get 2FT's next week instead of 1. Plus you still have Walcotts 'potential'.

I think you can argue both ways.

I actually think there's a chance he starts this weekend, but I still got rid, I don't want this headache every week. Helps with getting Aguero too.

Will be gutted if he scores 2-3 but that's just the way it is.

Having promised myself I'd not spend hours wondering about FF this season, I found myself wondering about FF for hours this week, mainly who'd be in my WC team, despite having no clear decision on when to play it.

FUBAR, so I'll be playing it right after the deadline tonight, get some risers and a city-based team in place, then get back to the vaguely controllable situation of one transfer a week

    Logical? Prob not. Healthier? Aye

Yeah I agree on that, is an even bigger risk in my opinion than keeping him.

But I do get that a price fall will become very annoying. i.e. instead of 2.5 needed for Kun, it's now 2.6. And it does look he's going to fall.

Looked alright to me. Dangerous, had a couple chances he should have done better. I expect him to improve, especially when Aguero comes back into the team.

I'm holding but if I had to choose eriksen unless the extra 1m inb helps you then payet because there's not much between them

You know you've had a bad start to the season when the best thing that's happened so far is for Walcott not to have dropped last night.

      Yep! With you here

First thing I did this morning was check Wally's price.

      What does it look like?

I tried the same this morning but with Silva as well and it wasn't great.

I've looked at one with Silva (no Haz, Oscar instead), and it looked good to me.

        Schmeichel McCarthy
        Shaw Richards Oxford Huth Delaney
        Hazard Ayew Cabaye Sanchez Surman
        Aguero Sakho Bentekkers

Defence I could and would swap around but enough budget to get a decent rotation in

probably looks like Aguero Haz Sanchez + the cheap GW1 bandwagons.

Actually not as many as you might think (no GW1 bandwagon defenders at least)

    Hi guys,

Anyone able to offer any advice on the below?

    Transfers for next week,

    A) benteke & sterling > aguero & Ibe (for free)

    B) benteke, sterling & mane > aguero, cabaye & 6.5m (-4)

    ?

Wait until they've played first would be my advice.

    Sky plans lads?

I'm captaining Mane this week (leftover from last weekend), before transferring Kane to Aguero after Spurs game and captaining Aguero.

Then Aguero shall remain captain before I transfer out Rooney (after Newcastle) to Sanchez.

Captain at least seems to work out okay over next couple of weeks but haven't really looked at other transfers! 🙂

I was just thinking of Mane (from last week) and switch to Silva (captain change)

Isn't it better to conserve transfers at this early stage?

Probably but I'd essentially be using 3 to get Aguero, Sanchez and captain Benteke this week with 2 captains every week for first 4. Still 37 transfers left.

After that I'd hope transfers will slow down as the core players will be set. I'd probably need to offload Ramsey at some point though.

    What I don't get....

Why would you not sell Walcott last night but then plan to sell him tonight?

You still won't know whether Walcott will score this weekend

You will still only have last weekend's information to base a replacement on (plus United / Villa I guess)

The player you bring in could get injured (unless a United / Villa player)

Yep. Surely most Walcott owners will keep to see the weekends games at least.

Activate wildcard after deadline. Transfer him out for potential risers, then replace with real wildcard team later in the week.

        Hoping not to wildcard yet.

Wouldn't recommend anyone wildcards purely because of the Wally situation. But for me, a GW3/GW4 wildcard was always the plan.

I don't think it's smart to WC over one player.
