Dugout Discussion

The Dugout Discussion – Southampton vs Everton

Saturday’s events get underway with a clash between Southampton and Everton at St Mary’s this lunchtime. Both sides are looking for a first win of the new campaign after registering 2-2 draws with Newcastle and Watford last weekend.

The Saints proved a reliable source of defensive returns at home last year, chalking up 11 clean sheets in front of their own fans and conceding a mere 13 times – only Chelsea (nine) proved more miserly.

After netting twice at St James’ Park last week, they’ll be looking to take advantage of a Toffees backline devoid of the injured Leighton Baines. Certainly, given that the visitors managed just two clean sheets on their travels last season, those backing the Saints at both ends of the pitch will fancy their chances of getting amongst the points.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Q: Um, are fixtures really working out as being an indication of anything?

          A: Yes, of course!

Odds are players will score more Fantasy Points against Poor teams, than they will against Good teams.

I don't think he'll be able to maintain it. He did the same thing a couple of season ago, giving people false promise. Everton's upcoming fixtures are undesirable to say the least so won't be jumping on the bandwagon. Yes, I've had an awful start (21 points last week, 2 points from 2 Soton players so far) but it's so easy to kneejerk.

It depends on what Martinez does with the formation. If he carries on with a 4-1-2-1-2 I think he will carry on. He is able to work with the forwards and push forward as well as create opportunities. Lukaku likes to come wide with the ball which will allow Ross to effectively play as a striker (like his goal this weekend).

Should Martinez change back to one up front then Barkley will struggle because of the more negative style of football.
