Preamble

The Pre-Match Preamble – Gameweek 2

After ten seasons of Fantasy Premier League management, I’d presumed I’d experienced almost every awkward scenario.

Tomorrow, however, I’ll be willing Theo Walcott to cut through the Crystal Palace defence having shown him the door just 24 hours earlier.

It’s a bizarre and uncomfortable situation, created by this season’s disjointed beginnings.

Us Fantasy managers begun the campaign without a full set of clubs. We’ve been chipping away with the irons, having left our trusted big-hitting set of woods in the garage.

The gradual introduction of Sergio Aguero and Alexis Sanchez – obvious contenders for the top-scoring FPL player this term – may not be so gradual.

Both entered stage left in Gameweek 1 and both are expected to feature in the lead cast this weekend. Should they arrive and steal the show, there will be frenzied transfer activity beyond anything we’ve seen to this point.

Most visitors to our pages are well aware of their impending arrival.

The clamour to ship out Walcott in order to preserve a measly 0.1 is not the result of careless knee-jerk; it’s a necessary step to prepare our squads for the inclusion of more consistent heavy-hitters. For true armband candidates.

Sadly, it’s clear to this point that we can’t place Wayne Rooney in that bracket.

When it comes to form, Wayne wears his heart on his sleeve: he’s either driving forward, showing hunger for goals with every touch or wandering aimlessly, showing hunger for Greggs with every misplaced pass. Rooney’s performance at Villa Park last night clearly resembled the latter.

Without a goal on his travels since November, Rooney has confirmed that he’s simply keeping the seat warm for Aguero; his 10.5 will surely be up-scaled as soon as squad shuffles allow the acquisition of the Argentine.

Or maybe Harry Kane will blitz the Stoke defence and change our plans? Maybe Christian Benteke will spark on his home debut and force a rethink?

Such uncertainties are inevitable at this stage in the campaign, although it’s safe to say that Aguero and Sanchez, along with Eden Hazard, are as close as we get to sure bets.

With Arsenal and Chelsea stalling on day one and Rooney currently resembling a Sunday League regular, we should forgive ourselves for seeking out sure bets.

I’ll be back for you later, Theo.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Think I've sorted my captain and transfer plan for Sky for next few weeks. Anything I've missed?

GW2 - Mane (c) Transfer Kane to Benteke after the Stoke game and switch captain to him.

GW3 - Transfer Benteke to Aguero so he's captain vs Everton. Then transfer Rooney to Sanchez (after Newcastle game) and switch captain.

GW4 - Sanchez (c) vs Newcastle. Switch captain to Mane vs Norwich

    GW5 onwards - wing it.

Hmmmm good point. Knew I'd have missed something!

Maybe I need to re-think that and perhaps not worry about getting 2 captains in weekly.

My take on United and Rooney:

Watching Man United last night reminded of how England have played since the turn of the century - slow, methodical, predictable, run down the wing then pass it back, sideways, no sense of urgency, no through balls, no running behind the defence. Easy to defend against and they got lucky with a deflected shot.

Rooney in particular was woeful, he's playing in a CAM position with no first touch, no sense of awareness, how many times was he picking up the ball and you thought 'he should be in the box on the back of defenders'. Hardly any pressing around the Villa defence. He should play in a number 10 role and that's about it in this United team.

Just because he has NEW doesn't mean jack shite, form over fixtures anyday, no exception for Rooney. Under LVG they won't create many chances, R.I.P Rooney as heavy-hitter.

Can you see Rooney being explosive, in terms of points, anymore? I really don't see it. Having said that, I have Aguero and Rooney atm so maybe the decision to jump ship is slightly easier

As I said, the same thing happened last year and he killed it vs NEW. I'm not saying he will again but you just never know in FPL.

so...you want aguero and sanchez, have two free transfers, own rooney, benteke, kane, walcott, ramsey, fabregas, have 0.5m in the bank, what do you do, other than don't ask and work it out for yourself ?

I doubt Rooney woould drop in price before GW3 with his tasty home fixture next. One thing that could change that is if Aguero gets double figures tomorrow against Chelsea. This will tempt some. If Aguero doesn't go crazy on Chelsea, we should be able to keep Rooney for 1 more GW without having to worry about a 0.1-0.2 swing in price to do the swap later in GW 4.

However, is it really still worth it holding on to Rooney for GW3? Is he still your automatic captain for GW3? As a disappointed owner and captainer this week and seeing how terrible he played, I have many doubts over captaining him now. Hazard,Aguero,Mane,Sakho,Payet,Gomis all have decent fixtures in GW3 and are good alternatives. If I have Rooney and won't captain him, is there any reason he should be in my team?

Rooney is not on the up. He is still in the +ve part of the target NTI but is being sold. He will be in the -ve after today's matches probably.

LVG needs to adapt his tactics according to his players rather than vice versa. Instead of lettting them play to their strengths they must try and adapt to the filolofee

What? That would be a disaster

Its a bit of both to be fair, the manager will have his idea of how to play, and then the micro of each game too, but he has to use what he has and best utilise the players at his disposal.

I am lol'ing so hard rn. Guys like Di Maria don't need to adapt to tactics, you let them do what they want and they can win you a game single handedly.

You high bro? Mata won a CL with Chelsea and was an assist machine. Has become worse under LVG, just like Di Maria...two world class players ruined.

Indeed, its a bit like Liverpool, pass the ball around a lot really slow without ever threatening, and then win the game by some fluke or worldie of a goal, and then give the fans false hope. :/

    Classed as defender. 5M

Pens after Sinclair (who is looking quite likely to lose his place when full squad is fit).

If Everton still look shaky at the back today, it'll be difficult to look past Aguero (C) next GW.

Conceding 2 at home to Watford was a shock. They were quite tight at Goodison last season:

    Everton 14/15 CSs: Home: 8, Away: 2
