Scout Picks

The Scout Picks Squad – Gameweek 3

This season, we’re rolling out a Scout Picks squad in the middle of each week in order to give you a heads-up over our thinking for the Gameweek ahead. This list of players also includes some names in contention for a place in our Spot the Differential article, though will, of course, be subject to change, depending on the injury situation as the days progress.

For Gameweek 3, here’s our current thinking…

Goalkeepers

Having served his one-match suspension, Thibaut Courtois (5.4) comes back onto our radar as Chelsea look to bounce back against a West Brom side that’s yet to net this term. With David de Gea sidelined amid speculation on his future, Sergio Romero (5.1) targets a third consecutive clean sheet when Newcastle United pay visit. In the budget bracket, Palace’s Alex McCarthy (4.0) is pitted against an Aston Villa outfit that’s racked up the second-least attempts inside the box (seven).

Defenders

Manchester United’s back-to-back clean sheets encourage us to invest in their steady rearguard. Matteo Darmian (5.6) presents the strongest cast for inclusion, having notched two bonus points in both matches.

Joel Ward (4.5) bagged his second ever Premier League goal in the Eagles’ 2-1 defeat to Arsenal. Among the league’s full roster of defenders, the Palace centre-back ranks fourth for penalty box touches (six) and second for goal attempts (three) this term, underlining his enhanced goal threat.

Notwithstanding the threat of rotation now Gael Clichy’s returned to the bench, Aleksandar Kolarov’s (5.5) marauding wing play could well harvest attacking returns when the Sky Blues visit Goodison Park. Aside from boasting a share of set-piece duty, the Serbian full-back has executed four more key passes (seven) than any defender this campaign.

Swansea’s attacking contingent are understandably garnering the bulk of the plaudits for their fast start, yet Ashley Williams’ (5.0) contribution shouldn’t be ignored. The imposing Welshman scooped all three bonus points last time out and will fancy his chances of rebuffing Sunderland’s lacklustre forward line.

Aaron Creswell (5.5) retains a spot in our Scout Picks by virtue of West Ham’s favourable home tie against Bournemouth. The Cherries failed to net in the opening two Gameweeks, increasing our faith in the Hammers’ back line.

Midfielders

Alexis Sanchez looked in ominous form against Palace – tallying more attempts inside the box (six) than any midfielder in Gameweek 2 – which bodes well for the Gunners’ home clash against Liverpool. Elsewhere in London, Yohan Cabaye (6.6) reiterated his Fantasy potential with a 10-point haul in Gameweek 1 and will be looking to pull the strings when the Villains come to town, while Dimitri Payet (7.6) should find pockets of space between Bournemouth’s banks of four.

David Silva (10.0) is more than justifying his top-tier price tag in these early stages, having bagged three assists in two starts. Everton will certainly do well to stymie the twinkle-toed Spaniard’s captivating start to the campaign. Conversely, Sadio Mane (8.0) has yet to set alight but should cause all sorts of problems for Watford’s new-look defence.

With three goals to his name already this season, Riyad Mahrez (5.7) could enjoy further success against Tottenahm’s mistake-laden rearguard. Meanwhile, Andre Ayew (7.1)  seeks a third strike in as many starts as the Swans roll up to the Stadium of Light.

Juan Mata (8.5) has piqued our interested as a mid-priced differential, given that the Spain international recorded nine points against Villa and could be the chief architect of the Magpies’ downfall. Nathan Redmond (5.5) clearly has his shooting boots on in the wake of back-to-back goals on the Canaries’ return to the Premier League.

Forwards

Sergio Aguero (13.1) tested the nerve of all non-owners on his return to the starting line-up last Gameweek. Aside from gracing the scoresheet, last season’s Golden Boot victor fashioned a wealth of shooting opportunities (seven) against Chelsea’s typically resilient back four, auguring another strong display against everton.

A home fixture against Newcastle United presents Wayne Rooney (10.5) with the perfect platform to kick-start his season. On a similar note, Diafro Sakho (6.5) possesses the pace and movement to trouble Bournemouth’s defence.

Troy Deeney (5.5) looks the pick of the promoted forwards this Gameweek, as Watford welcome Southampton to Vicarage Road. The Saints shipped five goals in their opening two clashes, with the Hornets lone frontman primed to capitalise on their defensive vulnerabilities.

Bafetimbi Gomis (7.1) looks to have filled the void left upon Wilfried Bony’s departure; the in-form marksman will doubtless be licking his lips as he prepares to face off against a Black Cats defence that’s been breached seven times already.

Community Champion

For the second week in a row the Community Champion beat the Scout Picks. Gameweek 2 Champion Daniel Levy – Not the Spurs Chairman racked up an impressive tally of 52 thanks to Liverpool’s Christian Benteke. The Scouts’ faith in Wayne Rooney proved their undoing, with their Gameweek 2 picks mustering just 44 points.

The community member who beats the Scout Picks by the biggest margin over the campaign will win a £100 Amazon Voucher and a place in our Contributors and Moderators League for the following season. Gameweek 1 Champion Fuzzy Warble beat us by a 12-point margin and remains the champion to beat.

Patch has been named Gameweek 3 Community Champion following this week’s lottery.

After that useful little hot topic about Norwich, as a Bournemouth follower (not fan), I thought I'd return the favour...

I'm sure many of you will have watched, and been impressed with, Bournemouth last night. But here's how I see it:
    _____

    Goalkeeper:
    - Artur Boruc - In possession until he makes a mistake, but better options in defence.
    _____

    Defence:

Simon Francis - My recommendation. Hard to know how AFCB will do defensively, but he'll provide plenty of threat. He's worth a go with the fixtures.

Left back - Charlie Daniels / Tyrone Mings
Eddie has spoken about this - Mings had a knock and he was keeping faith in players who served him well... e.g. Daniels. After last night, he'll keep his place. But watch out for Mings at a bargain £4.3m soon enough.

Centre back - Tommy Elphick and Steve Cook
Last night was their 50th consecutive game together and that'll continue for now. Elphick had a goal disallowed, but Cook outscored him by 5 to 1 last season. Better options.
    _____

    Midfield:

    - Andrew Surman - Impressive start to the season, with impressive numbers. Very good 5th mid.

    - The other CM spot is one to avoid. Arter back soon, with O'Kane and Gosling scrapping until then.

    - Matt Ritchie - Eye-catching display last night. Expect the shooting to continue, and the goals to come with more liberating defences.

    - Max Gradel - Looked off the pace last night. When he's fit, I think he'll push Ritchie FPL-wise.

    - Josh King - Looked lively in spells, but his place is the one Tomlin, Kermorgant and Atsu want.
    _____

    Forwards:

    - Callum Wilson - Still the only proper striker AFCB have, which surprises me. Last night wasn't his sort of game. Wilson needs lots of chances, but I'm sure he'll get goals and scare defences.
    ______

    Potential: Francis, Surman, Ritchie

    Monitor: Mings, Arter, Gradel, Wilson

    Avoid: The rest

    🙂

yea, he didn't look 100%. His passing was off and he had to do a lot of tracking back. I thought Clyne was very good though. He did improve with both his defensive work and distribution in the 2nd half. Will be one to keep an eye on.

Never seen him play and don´t know much about him tbh. Agree Clyne is not the easiest to be up against. Impressed by Ritchie though, at a better team he colud be gold. Not sure I can afford to keep him on my WC though..

Would you call Francis barely leaving his own half last night a one-off then?

All the talk on here has been about Francis since pre-season but Daniels on the other side was far more impressive, best Bournemouth player on the pitch by a distance last night for me.

There's enough stats that you can argue opposite points using the same stats half the time.

A lot depends on individual match situation which isn't transferable across games. For instance, a player who fires in loads of shots from miles away in the last 20 mins of a game when chasing but had no clear chance to score will look favourable with stats but never really had a chance to score any points.

        • 10 Years
        8 years, 8 months ago

Daniels did have a great game, but he's not nailed. Mings will at the very least rotate with him soon enough.

When Bournemouth play well, you'll see much more of Francis.

        1. CABAYE4
          • 12 Years
          8 years, 8 months ago

Yeah with the Mings fee I'd imagine that's the case.

Obviously it's only one game but I was expecting to see Francis bombing on but the only real action on his side was Ritchie cutting in and shooting every time. Daniels was the much more attacking full back on last night's showing, even if his end product was slightly lacking.

            • 10 Years
            8 years, 8 months ago

If you'd have watched the Villa game, you'd have seen what will happen with Francis.

Bournemouth didn't have the space last night, so Ritchie feeding Francis wasn't an option most of the time. In the easier games, of which there'll be many, I'd expect normal service to be resumed. Don't judge them on a tough away game.

            1. CABAYE4
              • 12 Years
              8 years, 8 months ago

Yeah fair point, as I said just one game.

I imagine the fact the Clyne bombed forward all the time but Gomez didn't get forward left more space to exploit on the Bournemouth left rather than the right too.

Arter would've come close to my initial picks if he was fit. And he's a key man.. but has had another injury setback. Very much in the 'monitor' category.

    Hi,

    My current WC team is...

    Butland / McCarthy
    Kolarov / Williams / Darmian / Gomez / Richards
    Payet / Mahrez / SILVA / Westwood / Sanchez
    Aguero / Gomis / DIOUF

    (1.2 ITB)

Possible changes... This is to enable me to switch Diouf > Kane in a few games as i need 0.4m to make the change which i am hoping to make through price increases over then next week. It would also mean i need to switch Silva > Yaya..

    good plan or not?

Planning on price increases always risky but good if it pays off I suppose! Who are you planning on making 0.4m off in 3 games?? Remember that you only get half of the total increase so you are looking for somebody to rise 0.8m in 3 GWs... in which case they'll be doing so well you probabaly won;t want to sell them haha

Have to agree, wouldn't really sell a prolific riser unless they got injured or some circumstance meant they'd suddenly lose performance like new system/personel.

My worst ever start to a season 🙁 guess only way is up I hope

    Ruddy (butland)
Shaw Coates holebas -- huth Francis
    Hazard sterling wally mata mane
    Rooney Deene --- Wilson

Have 2ft so not keen to WC just yet plus I missed some of the price rises

A: Wally + sterling >> ozil + yaya....will upgrade roon and downgrade mane gw to get kun
B: wally + holebas >> mahrez + ward...leaves cash to upgrade rooney next week to kun
C: wally + Wilson >> westwood (as bench) + sakho...leaves cash to upgrade rooney next gw

All have merits imo. Wally/wilson/holebas are priorities to get rid off

happy to take other options 🙂

Rooney on thin ice among Scout Pickers

Thought I'd open this up to the community.

Rooney is currently in the Scout Picks squad under consideration. Remember though this is just a long list of those in our thoughts.

As I type a discussion and vote is taking place as to whether Rooney makes the final picks.

So far Andy85wsm, myself and D1sable say drop him

The Professor and Granville say put him in the Scout Picks

What say you? Are we mad for dropping him? Or mad for sticking with him and his 0 shots on target this season?

Although after the last two weeks we can take all the help we can get. 🙂

He has to go. Utd aren't facing Carver's Newcastle.

If it was say Wilson or Deeney with those stats they'd be in the bin.

He's got nearly 18% of the captaincy poll so far.

But this is THE prime example of form over fixtures.

To be fair there isn't too many standout strikers. Almost all WC teams I've seen have Aguero and Gomis in them. Perhaps that third spot is open for Rooney's last chance.

He's having one of his dreadful spells and Utd still look pretty slow and ponderous going forward (stop sticking Mata on the right please LvG). He's getting a stay of execution in my team since I had more pressing concerns and already have Aguero so I hope I'm wrong but I'd say drop him.

His home record under LVG is still excellent, even when he was playing in central midfield. Look no further than his two goals and an assist at home to Newcastle last season...

Have a look in the Comparison Tool - his goal threat being non-existent at Villa is nothing new, but at home he's very rarely blanked.

He's no longer in my team, but if he was, I'd probably give him the armband, as contrary as that sounds.

I've dropped him, all the stats are against him, and long term I think he looks a terrible option. However, if I was picking a side for this week only, would I choose him? I think I probably would. Home to Newcastle is as good a fixture as is possible, and other than Aguero, if I had to put money on it, I'd probably back Rooney to score more than any other striker this week.

I think the question is who you put in for him instead. Under normal conditions as a team with a 100m budget and a need to get Aguero asap ... the verdict is simple = DROP.

If we are talking about whether he is a viable pick next week. I think he is bound to score one at home. Don't see him getting more than 6 points though, defenders getting the bonuses as usual.

I'm one of the wild carders who are past Rooney, but there is some logic to keeping him, ignoring the price drops/increases against Aguero.

first half of the season = form over fixtures
second half = fixtures over form

given you can largely pick any three strikers for your scout picks, I'm not sure how rooney would get near that three even if they were home to bath city

he will come good again, he often starts slowly and he's one of many big players I've noticed who seems to have come back well... just a bit bigger. Early start has not helped some teams. But he looks half a stone and five or six games away from full fitness at the moment. Rooney isn't a player who just turns on form like a tap, he takes a while to build up to it then has superb purple patches before fading again. He's actually quite consistent like that.

just to repeat. Home to bath city, would still not pick above Calum Wilson that is how off the pace he currently looks

    Ward 4.5

anyone pickin him up or avoiding him until later gameweeks as he has tough fixtures?

obviously could go for the other 4.5 (richards francis, muniesa, etc) , but not as much potential as Ward.

I've got him in. We get one wildcard in the first half of the season, and I'm using mine now - I don't want to be messing around with transfers on cheap defenders if I can help it. He has a great fixture this week, then three tough fixtures, then the fixtures are very good again. Just find a rotation that lets you bench him for three weeks, and he's a very good choice imo.

Ludo. well put. key sentence being "don't want to be messing around with transfers on cheap defenders". that is what is holding me back. given i kno i will want to do other FT

so youre doing it, prob you will bench ward those 3 tough fixt and play francis/richards etc.
        hows your def looking like?

        mine so far:
kolarov - williams - francis - gomez - ward if i go fr him. kolarov/gomes both risk obv.

Darmian is playing because he is playing brilliant. He really has been extremely impressive thus far, and looks very assured in defence.

Shaw is the same case, strong start to the season, very fast on the ball and looks confident.

Smalling is playing brilliant stuff, strong and commanding.

Blind played very well the last day, but not so well in GW1. He is more of a stop gap CB.

As for now I see Smalling racking the most points for the next few weeks, due to united not being able to produce many chances, assists will be tough for shaw and darmian.

But I reckon the three will be in the top 10 defenders for the year. All viable options

      B) Diouf is the pick of the lot for me

      C) 4.5 F and a 5th mid such as Chadli, Shaqiri

B is more flexible moving forward if strikers start to come good consistently (sakho, benteke, pelle, kane, deeney) which is likely somewhere in the near future.
