Fixtures

Frisking the Fixtures – Gameweek 3 – The Weak

After assessing the teams with the strongest upcoming schedule yesterday, we now shift our focus to assess those sides we should be trying to avoid for the next six Gameweeks.

This should be a particular interest to those Fantasy managers keen to make amends for an inauspicious start to the campaign, and certainly those with Wildcards active.

We find that, while Everton were mightily impressive in their 3-0 victory over Southampton on Saturday, their fixtures suggest goals and clean sheets will be hard earned in the coming weeks. The Toffees are joined in our group of unfortunates by Steve McClaren’s Newcastle who are on a collision course with all of last season’s top four over their next six matches.

EVERTON

frisking

Roberto Martinez’ side have taken four points from their two matches so far, but with home matches against last season’s top two, and a Merseyside derby also to play at Goodison Park, it could be more difficult for the Toffees in the coming weeks. Away trips to Swansea and West Brom, two of the stronger defensive units outside of the regular top six challengers, could also prove to be tricky assignments.

There have been a number of stand-out performers so far, with Romelu Lukaku (8.1) and Ross Barkley (6.6) both scoring twice and registering an assist in the first two Gameweeks. The Belgian has thrived playing against the top four sides in the past, but with the likes of Swansea’s Bafetimbi Gomis (7.1) and Stoke’s Mame Biram Diouf (6.5) providing strong options at a slightly cheaper price, it may be too much of a risk to back Lukaku to keep delivering. Barkley is more friendly on the budget, and like his team-mate, is among the top ten players transferred in this week in Fantasy Premier League (FPL).

At the back, Phil Jagielka (5.5) and Seamus Coleman (6.0) have ownerships of 21.6% and 13.7% in FPL respectively, and look unlikely to justify their hefty price tags given the quality of attacks heading their way in the upcoming period, while Coleman may also have to be more cautious with his raiding runs from right-back.

NEWCASTLE

frisking

After a promising performance in the 2-2 draw against Southampton, Steve McClaren’s men fell to a lacklustre 2-0 defeat at Swansea last weekend, making it seven consecutive Premier League away defeats for the Magpies, with just one goal scored. Given they have to travel to Man United, West Ham and Man City in the next six, the prospects for Newcastle’s Fantasy assets are severely hampered, particularly bearing in mind that they also face home clashes against Arsenal and Chelsea in the same spell.

Papiss Cisse (6,5) scored in that opening weekend draw and also bagged full bonus points but with difficult opponents and the possibility of Aleksandar Mitrovic taking minutes away or even being handed a chance to start, it’s unlikely he’ll be able to significantly add to his tally in the next six Gameweeks. Georginio Wijnaldum was another to find the back of the net against Southampton, but priced at 7.0 in FPL, the likes of West Ham’s Dimitri Payet (7.6) and Swansea’s Andre Ayew (7.1) have both form and fixtures in their favour and look far more appealing mid-price options.

Newcastle have only kept one clean sheet in their last 13 league matches, so while Tim Krul (4.5) and Massadio Haidara (4.5) are kind on the budget, the chances of them registering shut-outs in over the next six appear slim.

CRYSTAL PALACE

frisking

With just two clean sheets from 20 matches under the stewardship of Alan Pardew, the Eagles backline can’t be trusted to provide defensive returns, particularly with clashes against Chelsea, City and Tottenham in the coming weeks.

Joel Ward (4.5) may have collected a ten-point haul against Arsenal thanks to his long-range strike and maximum bonus, but with just two goals from 105 top flight appearances, we can hardly rely upon further attacking returns. Goalkeeper Alex McCarthy (4.0), like Ward, has seen plenty of investment this week, with over 78,000 transfers in, but with uncertainty surrounding the pecking order at Selhurst Park among the goalkeepers until Julian Speroni returns from his hand injury in the next few weeks, the former QPR stopper represents a risk.

Further forward, Yohan Cabaye’s 12.7% ownership may be looking elsewhere once this weekend’s favourable home clash against Aston Villa is out of the way, while owners of Jason Puncheon and Yannick Bolasie will hold similar concerns. With Connor Wickham, Glenn Murray and Patrick Bamford all vying for the lone striker role in the 4-2-3-1 formation, few will be looking at the Eagles frontline options for now.

ARSENAL

frisking

While it’s difficult to back against the likes of Alexis Sanchez, there’s no doubt Arsenal face some tricky fixtures in the next few weeks. The Gunners entertain Liverpool and Man United at the Emirates, two sides that have yet to concede a goal, while they also have to travel to champions Chelsea and the in-form Leicester.

With Man City’s attackers facing such kind fixtures, there appears to be no need to own more than one Arsenal attacking option over the coming period, with Sanchez and Mesut Ozil looking the leading contenders for that spot. Santi Cazorla and Aaron Ramsey (both 8.5) have failed to register attacking returns so far and could find their way out of many Fantasy managers’ 15-man squads, while with Sergio Aguero a “must have” for many FPL bosses, the 9.0-priced Olivier Giroud seems unlikely to attract many suitors, despite his well-taken volley against Palace.

Arsene Wenger’s side have conceded three goals in their two matches so far, and with some tricky fixtures in the next six Gameweeks, the likes of Laurent Koscielny (6.0) and Per Mertesacker (5.5), with ownerships of 16.2% and 15% respectively, may struggle to justify their price tags. Likewise, Petr Cech (5.5) has shown some weaknesses early in his Gunners career and may struggle to accumulate clean sheets in the coming weeks.

BE WARY OF…

Man United
Louis van Gaal’s side have struggled in front of goal so far this term, and with three tricky away fixtures (swa, sot, ars) on the horizon, it’s not a great surprise to see Wayne Rooney topping the transfers out this week, with over 197,000 FPL managers shedding the United skipper. Memphis Depay certainly earned a stay of execution following his shift against Club Brugge on Tuesday, but while both players could deliver against struggling Newcastle this weekend, the need to adequately cover the Man City frontline for their favourable run of fixtures may see United assets sacrificed.

Van Gaal’s men do appear to offer a far tighter unit in defence this season, with back-to-back clean sheets registered against Tottenham and Aston Villa. At this point, it’s looks far safer to back the Red Devils rearguard rather than their attack through this tricky run of fixtures. Matteo Darmian (5.7), who has racked up four bonus points so far, continues to present a worthy target: the Magpies visit, plus the home fixture against Sunderland in Gameweek 7 should prove profitable for the Italian and his defensive team-mate.

Chelsea
Many Fantasy managers put their faith in “big hitters” Branislav Ivanovic (7.0) and Eden Hazard (11.5) at the start of the season, but with a meagre four FPL points between the pair, and some difficult match-ups over the next six Gameweeks, it appears the sizeable funds tied up in the duo could really be better spent elsewhere.

Jose Mourinho’s team sheet will be closely monitored on Sunday given his shock decision to withdraw John Terry at half-time at the Etihad. The Chelsea skipper’s 9.8% ownership are facing an anxious wait to see if he’ll start at the Hawthorns, while there is an outside chance Cesar Azpilicueta could shift to right-back instead of the struggling Ivanovic, with new signing Baba Rahman (6.0) an outside bet to make his debut at left-back.

Diego Costa and Cesc Fabregas are other big names at Stamford Bridge enduring tough starts to the new campaign, so until we see the Blues conjure up some stronger performances, it may be best to avoid their expensive Fantasy options for the time being, with their schedule easing from Gameweek 9 onwards.

Well it depends doesn't it - I have swapped him for Sanchez - current form Sanchez looks more involved / more a threat.

Sanchez and Hazard will battle it out for the top scoring mids in my eyes - only 1 of the two is no loss.

Anyone's guess. Depends how much McClaren rates Williamson Pardew loved him (even though he's one of the worst defenders I've ever seen). I'd hopefully say Taylor as Williamson wasn't even in the squad the first two games.

    Morning all!
With injuries and and players not starting, I've pressed the big red button and wild carded.

    Would appreciate peoples views....

    McCarthy / Myhill
    Francis / Morgan / Richards / Williams / Gomez
    Mahrez / Silva / Hazard / Sterling / Sanchez
    Gomis / Benteke / Deeney

Hoping my strong midfield can make up for no Aguero

I'd be surprised if it brings real quality to be honest. There may be one or two surprises (someone like a Benzema/Muller, unlikely tho) but nothing a 1/2 transfer couldn't sort out.

Is it time to drop Hazard for Silva ?

Note : Post is a bit long. But I believe it's worth a read.. So I request patience.

Hazard's overall ownership is the problem, right ? But think about it, if you drop him Silva, what you've got to lose really ? Hazard scores a haul and your OR will fall like a stone.

But rather than making any decision (or not making) out of fear, let's analyse the scenario a bit more logically (based on form and upcoming fixtures) and then decide. I think most of us here does that more often than not.

So we'll be considering the next three fixtures for both the teams (the next after that is a bit long term, so I'll let you decide on that yourself, but even in those, City's fixtures are better than that of Chelsea as I have mentioned in the last part of this post). Anyways, in the next three, for Chelsea it's (wba-CPL-eve) and for City it's (eve-WAT-cpl).

To me, the fixture in which Hazard looks the most likely to score big is CPL one, given Palace's defensive record, say in the worst case scenario he does score a 15 pointer and many will captain him and will get 30, that's terrifying, right ? You'll fall like a stone.

    But, will you really ?

City will be up against WAT that same week and most will be captaining Aguero and only a very few are likely to captain Hazard, so it's basically a 15 point haul for the most part and not a 30, like I scared you earlier and it's very much likely, Silva albeit not 15 but will probably make an assist at least if he is not very unlucky, so a probable 7-9 point. So you lose about 7 points.

But now consider the other two fixtures, for Chelsea-City.

This week it's (wba-eve) and even though I rate Everton's defence higher than that of West Brom (despite Everton shipping 2 goals against Watford at home) it still looks very much likely that by virtue of being in better form as a team, City's attacking output will be better and that of Silva too. So that 7 point deficit is pretty much or at least partly covered even in the worst case scenario.

Two weeks from then, (eve-cpl) and in all certainty, City's attacking output again looks like will be more than that of Chelsea's, given Palace's defensive record (which earlier lead Hazard to earn a 15 point haul and put our OR in jeopardy), so that 7 point deficit is recovered and we are in two or more points ahead.

So, overall, even in the worst case scenario if we ditch Hazard, Silva stills makes up for it and puts up into even terms. If considered more realistically (that is Hazard will not be hitting a 15 point haul), Silva in the next three in all possibility looks like will outscore Hazard.

This in turn will mean that the same percentage ownership that you were worried about earlier will basically work for you and help you climb OR and more importantly help you score points in the immediate future.

In fact even after 3 weeks from now the fixtures for Chelsea and City looks like this (ARS - new - SOT) vs (WHM - tot - NEW) and as we can see, City's fixtures are still way better than that of Chelsea's, but probably things will change here and there and decisions would have to be made accordingly, so leaving that up to you.

    Conclusion :

I think a case can certainly be made for ditching Hazard for Silva and ride the form and fixtures, and bring Hazard back later as and when it feels necessary.

Suggestions, opinions and criticisms are all welcome.

        Yea absolutely..

I saw someone saying this earlier, that there is no such thing as a season keeper and I believe it's true.

Even though Hazard will still score 200+ points this season like the previous ones, but when he is blanking and someone else is scoring (not bandwagon ones) and is looking likely to continue to do so, we should definitely swap him in, in this case that's Silva.

Even though Yaya is also an option here, but I think if one takes in Yaya for Hazard, that extra 3m will probably be spread over and it'll be hard to arrange it and swap Hazard in when required, hence Silva).

Do apologize for the post getting a bit long.

Didn't realize it while writing actually. So now submitted it for a community article (my first one ever) I hope they find it worthwhile..

        Cheers! 😀 😀

Silva has the form and fixtures on his side, Hazard has neither. Silva rising, Hazard falling. Relatively straightforward decision IMO

      1. A-VB
        • 9 Years

The main issue is Hazard's ownership of 48%.

If it was less at say even 30%, it would have definitely been a rather easy decision to make.

One point that must be considered here, that Silva's value is rising and that is also very important when deciding between him and Hazard or the time being other than the points potential.

So, those who are on wildcard should find it a rather easy decision I believe and people like me who aren't on a wildcard still can and probably should go for it with a FT and reserving the extra cash in case shipping in Hazard again is felt necessary in the near future, maybe for Silva or someone else.

Great post. By my reckoning there are only 4 GWs all season where Hazard is a clear captaincy choice over Aguero or Sanchez. The latter two rotate as captain options much better and can essentially cancel out Hazard.

I still think Hazard will score around 200 but to justify 11.5m you need to be captaining him regularly and if you have Aguero (which you must) then you will not be maximizing Hazard's very expensive points.

Excellent post, there was a time hen we had to make a call on ditching Rvp as he lost his 'essential' status, I'm not saying Hazard is anywhere near that but for 11.5 I expect to b able to (c) you most weeks but as you say Aguero is the comfort blanket in the next 10 or so,
It's time to make a call again.

Your post is based on assumptions and find it a bit complicated.
Case for Silva: he is in form and has great fixtures
Case against him: he could share points with other City mids.
Case for Haz: despite a bad start, he has 2 relatively easy fixtures incoming, he is on pens and he could explode. His high ownership is key.
Case against him: Chelsea as a whole look out of sorts, they are not great going forward... This impacts Haz.

Wowzers, good post, the exact problem that keeps me up at night. I'm still split, my heart says Sillva (one of my fav players) but also logically backed up by good form/stats/fixtures but as I will already have Aguero for Man City cover my head says share the love. I am also swayed by Hazard on pens and not being able to easily maneuver him back in if he starts firing. Mainly I think it's the team balance though. If City blank that will be 3 players and a capt down for me where as of they score there's plenty of options in the City team to score points where as Hazard is much more of a main source or at least has been. Kompany won't get on the end of Silvas corners every week. I for one will be taking this decision to Saturday morning I'm sure. One other point is though...... Silva is cheaper and would allow me to have a more balanced midfield. I still have non idea, either way I'll be hiding behind the sofa and no doubt regretting my last minute decision.

The key is to not spend the 1.5m extra and to keep it, and I think that easily eliminates the problem of finding funds to bring in Hazard again.

As for sharing the love as you say it, I also don't like to put all my eggs in one basket as the saying goes and I do agree that Hazard is the more often than not the main source for Chelsea's goals, either directly or via assist, so it's risk to go without him no doubt.

However, the point I am making is to take that risk for a week (this week looks the best as Chelsea is down in form and up against wba) and if it pays off that is, Hazard blanks and Silva yield say 7-9 points by virtue of an assist at the very least, the upside of that huge due to Hazard's high ownership and then there is a week after that and so on.

If it doesn't however and you immediately feel scared and want to ship Hazard in against CPL, it's always a FT away.

I agree with assessing the fixtures, although guessing what points each player will get in each game specifically is somewhat ludicrous.

I am sticking without Hazard, but might not even get Silva. Got Aguero and Kompany and considering my options for that midfield slot, Toure is still on the cards...

        1. A-VB

Yea, I agree, trying to estimate the points that players will score is a bit brave in itself.

But, to show the potential downside in the worst case scenario, some yardstick was required, so tried to measure it up as the way above.. 😀

Anyways, if you've got Aguero and Kompany or any other city player as your 2nd City cover I think that's enough.

But for those who are deliberating still, who to take as their 2nd City cover alongside Aguero (myself included), Silva looks good over Yaya if midfield is the place to go, because he offers straight swap if the cash if conserved.

That's a good reason to get him. Might also want to swap with Sanchez if he turns to gold. Can Yaya keep it up, though? If he does it again this week I'll be tempted

Unfortunately for Hazard, Chelsea's fixtures perfectly mirror Man City's. As a result, I'd never captain him over Aguero in the next 10 gameweeks.

        Chelsea's fixtures:

        wba/CPL/eve/ARS/new/SOU/AVL/whm/LIV/sto

        Man City's fixtures:

        eve/WAT/cpl/WHM/tot/NEW/BOU/mun/NOR/avl

Sanchez, however, has the advantage of offering a captaincy alternative to Aguero in certain gameweeks.

        Arsenal's fixtures:

        LIV/new/STO/che/lei/MUN/wat/EVE/swa/TOT

Sanchez has LIV to Aguero's eve, STO to his cpl, lei to his tot, EVE to his mun and TOT to his avl. I'm not saying that you're going to captain Sanchez for all or most of these, but he at least gives you another option, which can help maximise your score.

Sanchez and Silva also matched Hazard for Points Per Start last season:

        Hazard - 6.1 PPS
        Sanchez - 6.1 PPS
        Silva - 6.0 PPS

Hazard's higher pricing is a result of his playing all 38 matches last season, which took his overall score past Sanchez and Silva's. Basically, I'm saying that if you're not going to captain Hazard, you might as well get Silva for 1.5m less, who you also wouldn't captain over Aguero - based on last season, he can more or less match his points scoring.

What if Hazard explodes, you say, with his 50% ownership? I'm not saying I don't think he'll score points - I expect he'll be at the very top come the end of the season, and him and Chelsea will turn it round soon enough. I simply recognise that you can't have them all, and think I'll score more points without him in my team.

In any case, Hazard only managed multiple attacking returns on two occasions last season, grabbing a goal and an assist on both occasions. On that evidence, you're not likely to miss out on Hazard's points by not owning him for one big haul - his appeal lay in his incredible consistency over the season. In GW13, from when his fixtures read NOR/tot/BOU/lei/SUN/WAT, I'm fairly sure I'll get him back in. For now, though, unless you see Sanchez or Silva failing to match last season's performance, or Hazard stepping up his game, I think owning him is a move driven purely out of fear of his ownership.

Silva is also cheaper so its Silva + 1.5m v Hazard.

        That 1.5 makes a huge difference in defence upgrading a 4.5 def to a 5.5 and a 4.5 to a 5.0

Why dont you include their price tag????
Hazard is 11.5m and Silva only 10m

        It is a no brainer...

I didn't include the price of these two players because I personally think it's better off conserving that extra 1.5m than spreading it out.

Because it lets you make an easy swap (without hits) to Hazard as and when felt necessary.

When you keep 1.5mil itb just for that transfer, you are effectively spending 11.5 mil on silva!

Then comparing silva to hazard there's no advantage in value...

You are missing on the fact that Silva will most probably be rising a couple of times, if not more in the next few weeks.

While Hazard won't, at least not with his current form and in view of Chelsea's upcoming fixtures. Probably gonna fall it seems, so it's 0.3m profit hands down.

Besides, it's not a must to keep the extra cash conserved, it's just what I would like to do personally, you can very well spread it if you wish to.

I think Chelsea will be out to prove a point against West Brom having started poorly. So I am saving hazard for this fixture.
It will be the gameweek after when city have watford i ditch hazard for silva. I agree city will beat Everton but think it will be closer than people think, as they will be on a high from the southampton game.

Sanchez, Payet, Ayew and Silva. Is my mid good enough? I was planning to get Memphis instead of Sanchez and get Sanchez in the next following week. I dunno if it's worth it or no.

        A) Mahrez

        B) Redmond

        C) Pelle

Easy. Redmond.I dunno why you have Redmond as well. Too expensive for 5th choice mid. Giving headache as well to choose your bench

If you had to choose one 4.5 keeper to play every week for the foreseeable future, who would it be?

Looking through last year's stats, there is a high correlation between goals scored and shots in the box, unsurprisingly. I tell you what though, Pelle is probably the least clinical striker in the league.

Likewise, for those next three fixtures? Then an upgrade to Tekkers?

            Reasons:

            - High on confidence
            - Direct player, bit like Sanchez
            - Good shot
            - On direct free kicks
            - On some corners
            - Nailed on for now
            - Newcastle at home

            - And it is fun

I haven't looked at chances, but I've seen the shots stats and they are good. However, I prefer to look at Shots on Target and Shots in Box.

Just from watching him last 3 games. He got a lot closer to the goal vs Brugge whereas he tended to shoot a lot from distance in games against Spurs and Villa. He seems an exciting player to own and is on a lot of set pieces. I'd be tempted if on wildcard for a midfield of Sanchez, Silva, Depay, Ayew, Mahrez with Pelle and Aguero up top.

He does. Goals are king though, and i trust Depay and United to score more for the rest of the seaso. Payet may be more consistent, especially with his assists but think Depay will prove better value

yeah, i may wait and see on Depay and keep Payet for now, if Depay starts to get consistent and/or Depay drops off i'll swap. Have Redmond as a 5th mid so that gives me a few options

Posted this in the dz, but reposting for the u.k massiv:

With Thauvin moving to Newcastle for 17M€ and Cabella coming to Marseille on season-long loan with a sign-on option (8M€), Marseille are the clear winners in the Thauvin - Cabella deal.

Florian Thauvin was a life-long Marseille supporter and in 2013 he forced a move from Bastia. Having signed for a large sum (15M€), the 20 year old arrived with a lot of hype and promise. Playing on the right side of an attacking quartet (with Andre Ayew on the left, Gignac up front and Payet in the hole), he demonstrated pace and dribbling qualities. However, he never made a strong impression on the Marseille faithful. What let him down was poor finishing and woeful decision making.

In 2013/14, he scored 8 goals at an average of 1 goal per every 260 minutes played. This was coupled with 3 assists. Under a new coach (Bielsa) and system in 2014/15, he struggled to match the statistics of the previous season. In 36 games, he managed only 5 goals (7% of the team's total goals) at an average of a goal every 501 minutes played. Again, he only delivered 3 assists.

This season, Marcelo Bielsa was planning to convert Thauvin from a winger to a playmaker. He was given the No.10 shirt and started the season in Payet's role. He even took over set piece duties. With Bielsa's sudden departure, two losses on the trot, an inability to properly link up with Michy Batshuayi and two seasons of disappointment with Thauvin, the Marseille president decided to take NUFC's 17M€ and run. Even with our decimated line-up and shortage of attacking players, Marseille supporters have applauded the decision to sell him.

In the other direction comes Cabella, a proven star of the French league who propelled Montpellier to a Ligue 1 title. In his last season at Montpellier, he scored 14 goals (31% of the team's goals) and 5 assists. Although it didn't work out at Newcastle, he a proven star of Ligue 1 and will provide some excitment and hope for a season already buried deep in the rough.

For the Marseille faithful, it's all smiles on the Canebière.

Heard a lot of people saying he's not worth the money but he is still young. Hopefully McClaren can coach him to be a better player.
