Captain Sensible – Gameweek 3

Our pre-Gameweek members article, which focuses on the main captaincy contenders arrives once again this afternoon. As always, we take a three-part approach – the first section will be free for all visitors to the site and will analyse the chief protagonists in our Gameweek Captain Poll, though the latter two parts will be members-only, as we delve deeper into the Opta and Rate My Team projections.

The Captain Poll

Sergio Aguero claims the lion’s share (35%) of the vote this Gameweek, having announced his return to Manchester City’s starting line-up with a goal against Chelsea. The Argentinian marksman already looks to be firing off all cylinders, as evidenced by the fact he sits atop the summit for goal attempts (nine) among forwards this term. Such is the strength of Aguero’s fixture-proof status, his owners are not deterred by the Sky Blues’ trip to the in-form Everton this Sunday. Given Manuel Pellegrini’s troops fashioned 18 shots on goal against last season’s stingiest rearguard, the Toffees will do well to batten down the hatches at Goodison Park.

Wayne Rooney drops down a spot the second place, with 16% of voters keeping faith in Manchester United’s premier striker in spite of back-to-back blanks. Although Rooney tallied a paltry two goal attempts across his first couple of starts, the Red Devils’ home tie against Newcastle could well serve as the catalyst that kick-starts his campaign. For that reason, it no surprise his team-mate Memphis Depay occupies the bronze medal berth with 7% of the vote. The Netherlands international bagged an eye-catching brace during United’s Champions League qualifying win over Club Brugge and looks far more suited to the left wing role after moving out of the central position last time out. Furthermore, the absence through suspension of the Magpies’ first-choice right-back, Daryl Janmmat, should further stand to benefit the Dutchman if he’s retained out wide.

Bafetimbi Gomis is backed by over 6%, while Swansea’s high-flying new boy Andre Ayew has convinced just over 2% of voters to hand him the armband. The Welsh outfit have been in sensational from an offensive standpoint over the first two Gameweeks, chalking up more big chances (seven) than any other side. Moreover, they sit joint-top – alongside Man City – for shots on target (15), demonstrating their quality in the final third. A trip to Sunderland looks certain to harvest further attacking returns, given that the Black Cats shipped three goals in their previous home encounter against Norwich City.

Inspecting the lower reaches of the list, Eden Hazard and Dimitri Payet scooped 4% of the vote each. The former has yet to deliver any attacking returns but a road tie against West Bromwich Albion – who’ve been breached three times in their first home fixture – could serve as a fertile proving ground for the dormant big-hitter. The latter, meanwhile, will fancy his chances of racking up points for the third successive Gameweek as the Hammers gear up for a home tie against winless Bournemouth.

At 3%, Alexis Sanchez – who plays at home to Liverpool this Gameweek – is starting to build some momentum as a slew of Fantasy managers draft him in with their Wildcard. Riyad Mahrez is not far behind the Chilean livewire, with his proponents expecting the goal spree to continue at home to Tottenham Hotspur. Speaking of the North London club, it’s perhaps surprising that Harry Kane attracted just 1.4% of the vote, considering he tallied four goals (including a hat-trick) against the Foxes last season.

the only way I know is if you know they have taken an early transfer and then when you next look during the week it has gone down to 0.

Yeah, if you keep an eye on your rival's team value and see that it changes, but no transfers are recorded, then they must have wildcarded.

Annoying that they've hidden the wildcard status though.

I didn't explain this well. The team value can rise/fall with price changes; the money ITB is a better indicator because that can only change with transfers/WC.

no i think its good that they hide it. in fact they should hide the number of transfers made and TV too

Yes - one or the other. They should either hide the lot or keep it all visible (because serious rivals will still find out otherwise).

    The case for Depay:

I've been dismissing Depay as a captaincy option, but I remembered during my research, I found out the following (adapted from the latest article 😉 )

    - conceded 16.5 shots a game and 19 last week.
    - Janmaat is suspended
    - 49% of Man United's play have come down the left a.k.a Depay side

Can't decide whether to build around 3-5-2 with say Payet/Ayew/Diouf or 3-4-3 with Ayew/Westwood/Giroud.

Mourinho faces counterpart Tony Pulis this weekend. A loss at The Hawthorns would be the seventh successive league game that the Chelsea boss will have been beaten by a manager whose surname begins with 'P'.

When asked about that statistic, Mourinho said: "If I was superstitious I'd say that when I start the season 2-2 I go on to win the treble.

"It was 2-2 Porto v Belenenses, 2-2 Inter v Bari and 2-2 v Swansea this season."

        Classic Jose 🙂

If either Ayew & Sakho, or the opposite Payet & Gomis get blanks this weekend, there will be scenes.

Transfers are really starting to pick up now, but Francis hasn't really moved, he may just hang on now.

This might be a stupid question, but in tables like Doosra's, when it says Chances Conceded (left zone), is that the left of the defence i.e. the left back, or the left of the opposition's attack i.e. right back?

Left of the defence, is my understanding.

It is. Alas, my players have let me down and I've shifted 12 out on a WC, but I'm keeping faith in the formation!!

What about Sagna for a WC team?
Zabaleta is injured and he is a cheap option to get into Man City def.

I've gone with him as a 5m def on my WC, I think maybe city's defence looks a bit tighter this year. Lack of attacking returns a bit of a worry though yeah...

In the last 6 seasons City have only scored more than 1 goal past Everton on 1 occasion. In that time Everton have kept 3 clean sheets against City. Can you read anything into this?

You can read plenty into it, Everton usually put in a good performance against City, however, given their respective starts to the season its hard to see City nto getting more than 1 in this fixture. Can see goals for both sides tbh.

After having a great gameweek i felt it was alright to take a hit to catch prise rises.. Do you agree tha its okay in that sense to take a hit?

Taking a hit for price rises is risky because the price needs to go up 0.2 in order for you to actually benefit.
