Captain Sensible – Gameweek 3

Our pre-Gameweek members article, which focuses on the main captaincy contenders arrives once again this afternoon. As always, we take a three-part approach – the first section will be free for all visitors to the site and will analyse the chief protagonists in our Gameweek Captain Poll, though the latter two parts will be members-only, as we delve deeper into the Opta and Rate My Team projections.

The Captain Poll

Sergio Aguero claims the lion’s share (35%) of the vote this Gameweek, having announced his return to Manchester City’s starting line-up with a goal against Chelsea. The Argentinian marksman already looks to be firing off all cylinders, as evidenced by the fact he sits atop the summit for goal attempts (nine) among forwards this term. Such is the strength of Aguero’s fixture-proof status, his owners are not deterred by the Sky Blues’ trip to the in-form Everton this Sunday. Given Manuel Pellegrini’s troops fashioned 18 shots on goal against last season’s stingiest rearguard, the Toffees will do well to batten down the hatches at Goodison Park.

Wayne Rooney drops down a spot the second place, with 16% of voters keeping faith in Manchester United’s premier striker in spite of back-to-back blanks. Although Rooney tallied a paltry two goal attempts across his first couple of starts, the Red Devils’ home tie against Newcastle could well serve as the catalyst that kick-starts his campaign. For that reason, it no surprise his team-mate Memphis Depay occupies the bronze medal berth with 7% of the vote. The Netherlands international bagged an eye-catching brace during United’s Champions League qualifying win over Club Brugge and looks far more suited to the left wing role after moving out of the central position last time out. Furthermore, the absence through suspension of the Magpies’ first-choice right-back, Daryl Janmmat, should further stand to benefit the Dutchman if he’s retained out wide.

Bafetimbi Gomis is backed by over 6%, while Swansea’s high-flying new boy Andre Ayew has convinced just over 2% of voters to hand him the armband. The Welsh outfit have been in sensational from an offensive standpoint over the first two Gameweeks, chalking up more big chances (seven) than any other side. Moreover, they sit joint-top – alongside Man City – for shots on target (15), demonstrating their quality in the final third. A trip to Sunderland looks certain to harvest further attacking returns, given that the Black Cats shipped three goals in their previous home encounter against Norwich City.

Inspecting the lower reaches of the list, Eden Hazard and Dimitri Payet scooped 4% of the vote each. The former has yet to deliver any attacking returns but a road tie against West Bromwich Albion – who’ve been breached three times in their first home fixture – could serve as a fertile proving ground for the dormant big-hitter. The latter, meanwhile, will fancy his chances of racking up points for the third successive Gameweek as the Hammers gear up for a home tie against winless Bournemouth.

At 3%, Alexis Sanchez – who plays at home to Liverpool this Gameweek – is starting to build some momentum as a slew of Fantasy managers draft him in with their Wildcard. Riyad Mahrez is not far behind the Chilean livewire, with his proponents expecting the goal spree to continue at home to Tottenham Hotspur. Speaking of the North London club, it’s perhaps surprising that Harry Kane attracted just 1.4% of the vote, considering he tallied four goals (including a hat-trick) against the Foxes last season.

After a disastrous start which has yet to see any of my players register a single goal I've taking the plunge and begrudgingly played my wildcard already. Any advice on this team would be very much welcome!

    Courtois, Butland
    Kolarov, Cameron, Ogbonna, Daniels, Gomez
    Mahrez, Silva, Depay, Chadli, Barkley
    Aguero, Gomis, Diouf

I dont usually go for an expensive goalie but thought with Courtois' slight price drop it would be worth it. Defenders rota for fixtures reasonably nicely, and the front 8 should hopefully finally see my team score some goals haha. Opinions?

    1. DaisyDaisyDaisyDaisy
      • 10 Years
      8 years, 8 months ago

I like the front 8 but Id spend less on the keepers and make sure you have some regular defenders if kolarov or Gomez get rotated..

    2. PurpleCobras
      • 9 Years
      8 years, 8 months ago

Surely if you're plumping for Courtois you want to pair him with him a cheaper keeper? I'm not sure how nailed Daniels is. And no Sanchez/other Arsenal cover may hurt.

      1. mat_a
        • 8 Years
        8 years, 8 months ago

Currently have 1.7m in the bank to add Arsenal cover later on if need be. Or would it be better spent upgrading Daniels/Gomez do you reckon?

        1. PurpleCobras
          • 9 Years
          8 years, 8 months ago

          Ah, good to know.

As Ki-yser Soze said above, you're running a risk of rotation with Kolarov and Gomez (and Daniels in my view). It's fine for one but you probably don't want that for both.

Bournemouth's Francis may drop in price tonight - you could swap Daniels for him tomorrow morning.

And as I say, I'd want some Arsenal in there.

          1. mat_a
            • 8 Years

Forgot to mention the bank in the opening post sorry haha.

I only kept Gomez in as I had him from the start and his value has since increased but I might upgrade him. Didnt know about a potential change in Francis' value, I'll keep an eye on that cheers!

              • 9 Years

In that case, Gomez may rise tonight too (see fplstatistics - http://www.fplstatistics.co.uk/) so hold for now and swap him tomorrow if you still want to. That way you'll have made a bit of money.

I'm not on wildcard but thought crossed my mind last night of:

      Clyne Coleman Gomez Galloway 4.0

Play Clyne and Coleman every week, doubling down with Gomez/Galloway for whoever has the best home fixture.

I think that could bring some pretty special returns, but it does mean missing out on Lord Aleks.

I wouldn't say that the price is too much, but the threat of rotation should be. Your 5th mid should be a stable player to prevent any nasty surprises

Sky Sports in Germany are saying that de Bruyne's transfer to Man City is well advanced and should be settled by Monday. Probable fee would be over €70 million.

What's the best way to use 3-5-2 in regards to benching 3rd striker? Do you rotate with 5th mid or buy a 4.5 bench sitter?

    1. iCon

You want someone who plays, to cover and possible benchings/unexpected injuries/etc.

Is 5.5 (Deeney) too expensive then if I plan on using 3-5-2?

I don't like Diouf, Sakho or Gomis though. I feel that there is more consistent points potential in midfield.

There wasn't a chance of him being 5.5 due to reputation and great goal threat. 6.0 maybe, yeah fair enough.

I won't be at all surprised if we realise a month down the line that he's worth it. By then Kompany will also be 6.5 and we'll have a dilemma.

So with a KDB fee apparently agreed, where do people think he's going to fit in to the current set up?

Move into the middle, with Silva shifting out wide to take Navas' place? Would dent Silva's prospects a little no?

    Altho a front 4 of:

    Aguero
    Sterling KDB Silva

    looks pretty ace...

Yup. Means death to Navas. Sterling replacing his pace. KDB can play from wide right too, pinging those crosses in. Silva, he and Sterling pretty fluid switching around like with Arsenal's front line.
