Captain Sensible – Gameweek 3

Our pre-Gameweek members article, which focuses on the main captaincy contenders arrives once again this afternoon. As always, we take a three-part approach – the first section will be free for all visitors to the site and will analyse the chief protagonists in our Gameweek Captain Poll, though the latter two parts will be members-only, as we delve deeper into the Opta and Rate My Team projections.

The Captain Poll

Sergio Aguero claims the lion’s share (35%) of the vote this Gameweek, having announced his return to Manchester City’s starting line-up with a goal against Chelsea. The Argentinian marksman already looks to be firing off all cylinders, as evidenced by the fact he sits atop the summit for goal attempts (nine) among forwards this term. Such is the strength of Aguero’s fixture-proof status, his owners are not deterred by the Sky Blues’ trip to the in-form Everton this Sunday. Given Manuel Pellegrini’s troops fashioned 18 shots on goal against last season’s stingiest rearguard, the Toffees will do well to batten down the hatches at Goodison Park.

Wayne Rooney drops down a spot the second place, with 16% of voters keeping faith in Manchester United’s premier striker in spite of back-to-back blanks. Although Rooney tallied a paltry two goal attempts across his first couple of starts, the Red Devils’ home tie against Newcastle could well serve as the catalyst that kick-starts his campaign. For that reason, it no surprise his team-mate Memphis Depay occupies the bronze medal berth with 7% of the vote. The Netherlands international bagged an eye-catching brace during United’s Champions League qualifying win over Club Brugge and looks far more suited to the left wing role after moving out of the central position last time out. Furthermore, the absence through suspension of the Magpies’ first-choice right-back, Daryl Janmmat, should further stand to benefit the Dutchman if he’s retained out wide.

Bafetimbi Gomis is backed by over 6%, while Swansea’s high-flying new boy Andre Ayew has convinced just over 2% of voters to hand him the armband. The Welsh outfit have been in sensational from an offensive standpoint over the first two Gameweeks, chalking up more big chances (seven) than any other side. Moreover, they sit joint-top – alongside Man City – for shots on target (15), demonstrating their quality in the final third. A trip to Sunderland looks certain to harvest further attacking returns, given that the Black Cats shipped three goals in their previous home encounter against Norwich City.

Inspecting the lower reaches of the list, Eden Hazard and Dimitri Payet scooped 4% of the vote each. The former has yet to deliver any attacking returns but a road tie against West Bromwich Albion – who’ve been breached three times in their first home fixture – could serve as a fertile proving ground for the dormant big-hitter. The latter, meanwhile, will fancy his chances of racking up points for the third successive Gameweek as the Hammers gear up for a home tie against winless Bournemouth.

At 3%, Alexis Sanchez – who plays at home to Liverpool this Gameweek – is starting to build some momentum as a slew of Fantasy managers draft him in with their Wildcard. Riyad Mahrez is not far behind the Chilean livewire, with his proponents expecting the goal spree to continue at home to Tottenham Hotspur. Speaking of the North London club, it’s perhaps surprising that Harry Kane attracted just 1.4% of the vote, considering he tallied four goals (including a hat-trick) against the Foxes last season.

    Rot My Thyme

    Myhill / Schmeichel

    Azpilicueta / Darmian / Jagielka / Clark / Francis

Hazard / Ozil / Mahrez Fernandinho / Ritchie

    Aguero / Benteke / Wilson

I'm taking a 4 point hit by getting rid of Bellerin, Mane and Rooney

Jags would be the one i'd be looking to get out. How about Jags to Williams, then play Azpil / Darmian / Williams this week?

He's cheap, he's playing for Man City and he saves money if I sell Mane. I was mainly interested in making revenue so I could bring in Aguero and Darmian in if I'm honest.

Playing for Man City isn't necessarily a good thing if he's not that attacking (I know he scored the other day but that isn't generally his game).

If you've not yet made that triple transfer I'd probably look for someone else within that price bracket.

KDB looks set to sign.. Who suffers game time wise? Yaya? Guess he is no spring chicken anymore.. Or Navas? The latter is definitely the ‘weak’ link.

      Repost from Connor Calling's post!

Yup. Means death to Navas. Sterling replacing his pace. KDB can play from wide right too, pinging those crosses in. Silva, he and Sterling pretty fluid switching around like with Arsenal's front line.

Owen Hargreaves was saying on BT last week that KDB is best in the hole but won't be played there at City because of Silva, so KDB will be out wide and Hargreaves was questioning if they'll be able to get the best of him out there.

I'm worried that Diouf just looks a better option because of how amazing he was against Spurs. Caused them all sorts of bother. But no guarantee he will replicate that vs other sides, playing in more of a winger type role.

and yes, Targett seems to be the only 4.0 playing defender. Bertrand should be back soon though.

    Is Chelsea a relegation contender???

Many wildcard team appear which doesn't have HAZARD OR COSTA OR IVAN/AZPI.

How easily we forget that Chelsea is a champion of last season. And just based on opening 2 games we are completely underestimating them???

It's all about form...and at the minute Chelsea don't have it.

What if they win 3-0 vs WBA next week.
All of sudden they got all form and all?

Plus unlike actual relegation contenders, they're very expensive to have around when not performing.

Fair enough on mids and strikers but I really don't see how Ivan is worth 7m

I stuck with Fab and Ivan through those torrid two weeks. They sure do need to give me a reason to keep them.

Agree entirely....all this wildcard action is surely knee-jerk?.....that said, if hazard fails this week will prob swap him for Sanchez... .keeping azpi tho

I have also wildcard but just to avoid price changes. Other wise i think I had nice team.

Too expensive, there are better and cheaper option and might wait until their price is dropped. And also they are off form at the moment.

    Hazard or Sanchez?

I'm a Chelsea fan on wildcard and it's heartbreaking not to have one Chelsea player in my team.

      no time for club allegiances.

I am also a Chelsea fan and my wildcard team currently has no chelsea players in it. Would have a defender but its all a bit up in the air at the moment with new LB and Terry and Ivan looking way short.

if u had to bet on either kolarov or yaya rising twice this week who would u have picked?

i went kolarv as i think im going kolarov over yaya for the 3rd mci player...seems like yaya will go double tonite and earn that 1 to those who bet on him. and thn drop him for kolarov if need be.
