Digest

The Digest – Gameweek 3

Our final look back at Gameweek 3 assesses Bournemouth’s hat-trick hero, City’s perfect combination of form and fixtures, and the growing competition for our attention in the Chelsea midfield…

The Player

Callum Wilson’s clinically taken hat-trick at Upton Park earned Bournemouth their first ever win in the Premier league and has sparked a major bandwagon across the Fantasy games.

With many wildcards being wielded, the Cherries lone frontman picked the perfect time to announce himself as a value candidate for our three-man frontlines, with over 166,000 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers snapping up his services. As Fantasy managers search for this year’s Charlie Austin, who scored 18 times for promoted QPR last term, Wilson has subsequently risen from 5.4 to his original 5.5 starting price.

Delving into the data further, Wilson’s displays suggest he’s a viable option both home and away. Thanks to his weekend showing, the Bournemouth frontman has now scored more away goals than any other player in the top four tiers since the start of last season (15), with Eddie Howe’s team tailor-made to utilise his pace and movement on the counter. The Cherries, meanwhile, have won 17 penalties since the start of last season – three more than any other club in the top four leagues.

With the Upton Park result handing them a major morale boost, Bournemouth can approach their upcoming fixtures with renewed confidence. Eddie Howe’s side racked up 98 goals on their way to winning the Championship last season and with the likes of Simon Francis, Matt Ritchie and Max Gradel all supplying the creativity, Wilson’s growing band of owners have every reason for optimism ahead of four very strong showdowns in the next five (LEI, nor, SUN, WAT).

The Team

After three rounds of fixtures, Manchester City look in ominous form after a 2-0 win at Everton continued their 100% start to the season.

Manuel Pellegrini’s men sit at the top of the table, with nine goals scored and a trio of clean sheets accrued, and with an outstanding schedule to follow, many Fantasy managers are scrambling to load up on their main men.

Up next for the Etihad side are four home matches (WAT, WHM, NEW, BOU) allied with trips to Palace and Spurs in the next six Gameweeks which should allow Sergio Aguero the chance to run riot as a captaincy option.

Whilst few will be willing to go into that period without the Argentine on board, the battle is on for our attentions further back. Yaya Toure and David Silva look the chief midfield protagonists, though Raheem Sterling threw his hat in the ring with an assist at Goodison – for those who cannot stretch to Silva’s 10.1 price tag, Sterling is now just 0.1 more expensive than the Ivorian (8.9 to 8.8).

At the back, Aleksandar Kolarov’s 15-point haul against the Toffees moved the left-back to joint-second in the overall FPL standings along with team-mate Vincent Kompany. Although the Belgian is, overall, the more secure pick, Kolarov’s raids down the left and understanding with Sterling have proven a key weapon in the opening three outings. With Gael Clichy still building up his sharpness, there’s a growing belief that Pellegrini will tinker as little as possible as he looks to maintain momentum and move further away from the chasing pack.

The Talking Point

It took Pedro just 20 minutes to announce himself to Fantasy managers after opening the scoring in Chelsea’s 3-2 win at West Brom on Sunday afternoon.

By the time the final whistle went at the Hawthorns, the Spaniard had also bagged an assist and maximum bonus points, serving up a 13-point haul on his debut for the defending champions. Given that Eden Hazard has managed just eight points in his first three appearances, it’s easy to see why over 190,000 FPL managers have already snapped up his new team-mate.

Coming in at 9.5 to Hazard’s 11.5, Pedro offers an obvious alternative to the pricier Belgian as a route into Chelsea’s attack. Whilst there’s no questioning Hazard’s Fantasy potential – 14 goals and ten assists in each of the last two seasons says it all – Pedro’s acquisition perhaps indicates that the former Lille man may not be quite as “essential” in many managers’ eyes.

Whilst Hazard ultimately saw off the challenge of Cesc Fabregas as the prime Chelsea midfield pick last year, Pedro brings a far greater goal threat than his compatriot, having chalked up a 15.7% conversion rate in La Liga last term.

Certainly, the weekend showing has had an effect. Although he still sits in over 42% of FPL teams, Hazard has been sold by 404,000 FPL managers since the start of the season – over 110,000 more than any midfielder – and, along with Wayne Rooney, has been identified as the prime source of freeing up cash for our 15-man squads.

Whether Pedro can rival Hazard overall remains to be seen but with a 2.0 difference in cost, the Spaniard’s value for money is clearly set to play a part in how many assess the Chelsea attack from here on in.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

No not for Wilson, I am in the dilemma to whether ship Gomis out for Costa or not. I expect Chelsea to explode in terms of goals and have no cover for them and that worries me :/

Yep against palace.. I am not too sure about their either of Pedro or Hazard. Pedro had a confusing debue. His goal was a deflected one, he took a chance at goal that was so wayward that it assisted Costa to his goal and when he finally cleanly set it all up for Willian he somehow shot it wide! Hazard is not going inside the box much. Costa is what I would prefer even if that's means taking a hit to bring him in. But in my case I would have to ship out Sanchez to accommodate Costa and its holding me back so far!

I believe he could go for the low 20's, he has a lot of seasons ahead of himself and many promising characteristics.

Your talking to a man that would play Nani in the hole, I have never proclaimed my managerial style is logical.

Matic the better DM, but Morgan can play with another defensive midfielder.

Depends on whether you have another good DM, but I'll say Matic.

          • 10 Years
          8 years, 8 months ago

Yes, but in a lesser team where you'd expect the numbers to be higher. Morgan also played with Wanyama and now Schweini and Carrick, as opposed to the lone DM. And if we going by stats, that would make Coquelin the best... 4.25 interceptions per 90 last season, compared to Morgan's 2.59.

I think Matic's form hasn't been at the best in the last 6 months, but he is still the best DM in the league, imo.

            • 10 Years

No significant difference in possession between Southampton and Chelsea. Manchester United has way more possession than either, and Schneiderlin still has way more tackles + interceptions than Matic (7.3/90 v 5/90).

            1. Wilshere Knowledge
              • 10 Years

Similar possession doesn't mean they come under similar pressure.

Tackles and interceptions don't make on player better than another.

However, if you prefer Morgan, that's preference.

I'm saying that you should have that in mind but not at the cost of what you really want.
If you have a 50/50 situation between 2 players, that might sway you in the direction of the one you think stand a good chance to rise considerably in the international break.

For example. Shaq has only 90k ownership and a favourable fixture coming up gw4.
If you think hewill do well in gw4 and he does, he might rise a couple of times in the interantional break.
Though he might not be the best example as he then has Ars in gw5.

Seriously considering taking a -4 to do Rooney to Costa this week. Have Defoe and Aguero (C) already (already did Kosc to Sagna)

    Team would be:

    Butland
    Gomez/Cedric/Sagna/Azpil
    Depay/Mane/Mahrez
    Costa/Defoe/Aguero(C)

    Ruddy/Ritchie/Payet/Morgan

    Any thoughts?

Allow me the indulgence of a post, my compatriots. I am one of you, if not in contribution, in spirit at least. Consider this my first comment or post, although I have posted all of once before. (some of you might remember a seemingly inebriated soliloquy)

There are a number of contributors and posters, little and large, the scouts, the regulars, the known and frequent, and the unknown and infrequent.

There are seemingly always debates about learnings from previous seasons of FPL, don’t WC early, WC early; don’t take hits, take hits; form over fixtures, quality over form; fixtures over quality. All seemingly coherent and contradictory at the same time taken as a whole. One size does not fit all and many other such platitudes.

My learnings from FPL have been as below –
      1) There is no learning
      2) At times WCs work, at times hits work, at times they don’t. At times drafting in players work, at times sticking to quality works. There are no rules

HOWEVER, I have serious views on how a large number of folks seemingly manage their transfers and expectations. Read on:

A football match is a series of discrete events. Frequently decided by one discrete event or another, eg: a Raheem sterling outstretched leg connecting with the ball, or a linesman ruling offside incorrectly when Aaron Ramsey scores. Entire matches, player evaluations can swing on some fairly unique circumstances.

Unlike say basketball or cricket, where the runs or points are high and therefore more predictable, a particular football match is more difficult to predict. Some might say arsenal at home against west ham is a 3-0 scoreline waiting to happen. But what they forget is that west ham will play on the counter attack, and have chances to score, the way bournemoth did against west ham away. Or how west brom against man.u away is an opportunity to not play a west brom keeper, forgetting that west brom would park the bus and the goalkeeper may make up in save points, and heaven knows what happens if a penalty save also ensues!

What’s the point of all the above? Knee jerk transfers have to be avoided; points one week does not mean points the next; folks who say I took a -8 hit to bring in silva and aguero, (but drop say hazard and sterling) forget that sterling and haz are as likely to score based on the points above, of an inherently unpredictable game.

I hear you ask me, but then if it’s purely a game of luck, how do mark, ville ronka, triggerlips et al manage to score well season after season? The answer is – the longer the set of events, the less random they become and more predictable. It is likely that over the course of a season, Chelsea will concede the fewest goals and man city score the highest. Therefore ask yourselves when you transfer out an azpi or ivan because of chelsea’s weakness thus far, three games in, is that really a measured short term, mid term or long term approach? Probably not. Therefore over the course of a season, you maximize your opportunity to win by playing the best possible way, i.e, almost like a poker player, playing the odds correctly. Limited or no knee jerking. Examples:

Wilson has scored a hat trick this week. Has great fixtures. Bring him in? Okay, maybe, but don’t sack off after two goalless performances in the next two games; because he might very well score in the third.

City three attackers: YES! If you can afford it. They always score goals, they’re in form and have fixtures. Removing sterling after a game AFTER having brought him in two games back? Knee jerk. Saving a transfer and making two free to upgrade to silva and coutinho, from sterling and chadli? Much better… Play the odds. Play logically, have patience, and remember: there are no rules.

The most important thing that I want to end on: when all other things are equal: go quality. This is the most important factor IMO. That people miss. Silva is the darling now, where Hazard isn’t. The point is both are outstanding quality who are guaranteed starters for nailed on teams in attacking roles. Keeping hazard is a quality decision, the way keeping sanchez is, or aguero, or costa when fit. Keeping Walcott: that’s an example of a poor decision: middling quality, explosive finishing, but lack of guaranteed playing time: any serious arsenal fan could have told you this at the season beginning. A lot of FPL success is only about logic, intelligence and football understanding, not to mention patience.

Good lessons learned. In your next chapter, you can perhaps add in the strategy of team value accumulation, which makes some of these judgments a little more complex (e.g. knee jerking is sometimes appropriate to make a quick buck -- but at what "cost" in points?!?).

        My fave part:

..."Unlike say basketball or cricket, where the runs or points are high and therefore more predictable, a particular football match is more difficult to predict...."

So true. This sport has so few goals that it is a tricky fit into the typical world of fantasy sports. In the US, baseball, basketball, hockey and even American football have more scoring, measurable player stats, and predictable outcomes. This makes FPL quite tricky and interesting, and it does require more patience given how the average number of goals in a game is like 2 (2.5?).

I don't agree with this entirely, I think that knee jerking is unavoidable in order to get form players in( the most important thing in fantasy football IMO). Yes Chelsea might concede the fewest goals in the league this season but they are clearly out of sorts atm so going by form and Chelsea's slow defensive start to the season in the past few years can you really say that Ivanovic > Kolarov isn't a logical move? No such thing as a season keeper IMO the secret to a good rank is having the right players at the right times and not depending on their quality irrespective of their form/fixtures.

Seems sensible on the surface however if this was true, it would be possible to win with a basically static team varying only because of injuries and maybe fixture trends (like long series of fixtures). As we all know it is not the case.
This is forgetting that this game rests on mainly one thing which is the money constraint (give 200m to everyone on GW1 and this game is irrelevant as you would just buy the quality players for the reasons listed above). What makes or break a season is the selection of the right player for the right budget. For high budget it is probably qualityplayer but for low value player it is about form and mainly form and at this end of the day this is about knee jerking (think ulloa, naismith last year)
Money it is always about money. If for no other reason knee jerking builds value...

Rediculous theory and I do wish some of those reinforcing this bull would do so with some solid facts like team value of top 10k v team value of 10k to 20k come the end of the season. Even this wouldn't prove that knee jerk in and taking hits is required to do well but to me it seems mostly poorer playersthat play like this.

A wonderful post, with the slight caveat that sometimes price rises can dictate transfers. Which is another post entirely, but still a relevant point. If price changes didn't exist, knee jerk transfers would be insane. As opposed to merely daft.

There is no way the arsenal midfield are going to continue scoring an average of 0.33 goals per match between them, as a case in point. Yet I have already seen countless get shot of them now posts. Playing three city is fine, but if you've got no Chelsea, arsenal or united to do so you've going to get found out.

Great post, love the "no rules" approach.
The only thing i disagree on is "Keeping hazard is a quality decision." The way i see it: i get 100m to get as many points as i can, i have to bench a minimum of 16.5m which leaves me with 83.5m to score me points. Let's say Hazard will repeat his previous season point tally(i'd say this would be a good guidline), an average of 6.1ppg. For 11.5m that's 1.88m/point. If i were to invest 83.5m in similar value players i'll end up with an average of 44.3 pts+6.1 (Hazard captain)= 50.4pts on average each GW. I'm pretty sure that wouldn't be enough for a top 10k finish.

What i'm trying to say is that Hazard is not good value and unless a high % of the players that matter are captaining him i won't get him. Did okay last season hardly owning him while he was cheaper and wasn't bothered much about his high ownership(~50% if i recall correctly and a lot more amongst the active teams)

That said i'm doing worse than 50pts/GW so far. My team is not yet set up for value because i was completely out of loop preason and i just picked who i thought was the best attacking option from the top teams and got what i could in defence.

P.S. If it wasn't for Hazard being top of captain poll in GW1 i would've been the extremly happy owner of Fabregas(6pts),Kolarov(31pts) and one of Skrtel(18pts) or Darmian(20pts) (was undecided between the two) instead of Mings(0), Coates(1) and Hazard whom i sold in the meantime. Only a small regret cause it's easy to be wise now. Hazardless in GW1 when most are captaining him could've gone really bad.

There's also potential slow down in older players, and sell on value.

And let's not forget that he's not a 16 year old wonderkid - he's 22. It's still young, but he's nowhere near the level to suggest he's going to become anything special.

He had a streak of good scoring last season, which probably makes most of the price, but has not yet provided any proof that it wasn't an anomaly as he has not been able to replicate that form. And even that "form" was partly penalties.

He's decent, but not worth that much. I'd rather have Austin and he's available for £15m, which is high.

      How's this team looking chaps?

      Butland

      Azpi / Mert / Cedric

      Hazard / Yaya / Ozil / Mahrez

      Aguero (c) Benteke Wilson

All set to go or do I need to throw in a -4 somewhere?

      Thanks a lot

I know i can not have them all but Benteke is really good and have a excellent home fix.
My front 3 is Aguero - Gomis - Diouf , so it would be crazy to dump 1 off them?

        Swansea regularly score against United.

But agree that Benteke has more potential over the four.

      Does my team need surgery?
Currently on 145 points. I know that's good so far, but my lack of Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool players worries me.

      Butland / Ruddy
      Kompany / Fonte / Cresswell / Coates / Elphick
      Wijnaldum / Depay / Silva / Chadli / Ayew
      Defoe / Kane / Pelle

      Does it need changing guys?

      Thank you.

Still early to judge Depay and Wijnaldum
