Scout Report – Kevin de Bruyne

Yesterday afternoon, Kevin De Bruyne became the second most expensive signing in Premier League history after joining Manchester City in a £54m deal from German outfit Wolfsburg.

The former Chelsea winger – who arrives at the Etihad on a six-year contract – spoke of his desire to improve with the Sky Blues while claiming silverware in the process:

“I want to reach the highest level possible as a player and I think the most important thing is that at the end of the season we can be happy and maybe have some titles. I think this is the most important for the club, the players and for the fans of course.”

After seeing his side soar to the top of the Premier League without a single goal conceded, City boss Manuel Pellegrini reckons the new boy’s addition will only strengthen their attacking potential:

“We are very happy to have added Kevin to our team and I have no doubt that he will be a big success on his return to the Premier League. It takes a special footballer to improve our squad and I have no doubt that Kevin is certainly one of those – he has all of the mental, physical, tactical and technical attributes required to fit straight in. We like to play attractive, attacking football and bringing in a player like De Bruyne will only aid us as we fight on four fronts.”

The History

Born in Belgium, De Bruyne started out at local club KVV Drongen, before spending six years at Gent from 1999. A move to fellow Belgian Pro League outfit Genk followed in 2005, where he would spend four years cutting his teeth at the youth academy before earning a senior call-up.

De Bruyne made his competitive bow for Genk in May 2009, recording two brief cameos at the back end of the campaign. His involvement blossomed in the following season, when he featured in all but three (11 starts) of 30 league ties, bagging his debut goal along the way. Injuries permitting, De Bruyne established himself as a regular starter in the next two terms, chalking up 12 goals and 19 assists across 44 outings.

As a reward for his eye-catching displays in Belgium’s top tier, De Bruyne made the switch to Chelsea in January 2012. He was then sent out to Werder Bremen on a loan basis for the 2012/13 Bundesliga campaign. The Belgium international flourished during his stay at the Weserstadion, recording ten goals and nine assists over 33 appearances.

De Bruyne returned to Chelsea for the start of the 2013/14 Premier League season but started just two matches leading into the New Year. Frustrated by a lack of first-team opportunities, he elected to join Wolfsburg halfway through the January transfer window.

In 16 starts for the German outfit during the second half of their season, De Bruyne tallied three goals and six assists. The subsequent campaign harvested a staggering ten goals and 20 assists, rendering the former Genk starlet the top assist-maker across the top five European leagues. As a reward for his exploits, De Bruyne was honoured as the Footballer of the Year in Germany.

De Bruyne made his maiden senior appearance for Belgium in August 2010 against Finland, having carded caps for the U18s, U19s and U21s. Since late 2012, the midfield architect has been a mainstay for the Red Devils, notching eight goals in 33 appearances – which included the opening strike against USA in the last-16 round of the 2014 World Cup.

The Prospects

Although he was predominantly deployed as a number ten in a 4-2-3-1 set-up throughout his stint at Wolfsburg, De Bruyne is also capable of excelling on either flank. The ex-Chelsea recruit played across that supporting trio last term and has been fielded on the right in his most recent three starts for Belgium. Furthermore, De Bruyne occupied the left wing for the majority of his swansong season at Genk, highlighting a versatility that should enhance his security of starts.

Assuming that head coach Manuel Pellegrini chooses to retain a 4-2-3-1 formation, De Bruyne is expected to displace Jesus Navas on the right flank, given that the Spanish winger lacks the end product to nail a starting berth. Alternatively, he could also tuck in behind Sergio Aguero should Pellegrini choose to move David Silva out of the central playmaker role and onto the right. Navas will likely be utilised as an impact player for the time being, entering the fray in the latter stages to stretch the game and provide more traditional width.

Whilst 4-2-3-1 is expected to remain City’s default system, Pellegrini has certainly shown a willingness to alter his team’s shape when necessary. The Chilean moved to 4-4-2 for the second-half against Watford last weekend, with Raheem Sterling joining Aguero up front – this saw Samir Nasri replaced the ineffective Navas at half-time, with Silva moving out to the flank.

Delving into De Bruyne’s underlying statistics, he amassed 111 key passes last term, which far surpassed the output of the Sky Blues’ most creative midfielder, David Silva (93). His key-pass frequency (one every 27.45 minutes) was unmatched by any midfield starter around the Premier League, underlining his playmaking prowess.

In terms of goal threat, De Bruyne posted a shot accuracy of 42.7% and conversion rate of 10.4%. While the accuracy would have ranked top among his Man City counterparts, Silva (18.8%) proved far more clinical with his finishing.

In appreciation of Aguero’s potential for explosive returns and Man City’s four consecutive clean sheets, many Fantasy managers will be sourcing triple coverage comprised of Aguero, one defender and one midfielder. Silva (four assists) and Yaya Toure (two goals and assists) have both started the season in fine form, with the latter boasting the largest ownership by virtue of his cheaper price tag, while Sterling’s weekend goal indicates he will also have a part to play in our Fantasy seasons – particularly if he’s utilised centrally up top whenever Pellegrini switches systems.

As opposed to the Pedro/Eden Hazard conundrum at Chelsea, City’s strong start means that those already holding the likes of Silva, Toure or Sterling will surely be prepared to hold for now, though those Fantasy managers currently without Pellegrini’s midfielders will undoubtedly be tempted by the new boy’s arrival.

Given how kind the upcoming fixtures (cry, WHU, tot, NEW, BOU) are, De Bruyne – who has today been priced at 10.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) – is instantly afforded the perfect platform to showcase his talents and make a claim for a slot in Fantasy managers’ five-man midfields.

so are united fans willing to accept that they, like Chelsea and City, are trying to buy the league?

Not until we successfully buy it. And by then, I won't care because we'll have won.

        fair, honest answer.

I reckon the only way you could differentiate it is that United's money has been earned through years of expansion and shrewd sponsorship agreements. Chelsea's initially was bankrolled, but they have become quite a decent business model themselves now. City are still on the purse strings or their owner. Essentially, United can spend huge, because such deals have allowed it to happen, but the money is taken from the club. City can spend huge, and if it messes up, they can spend even more, up to whatever the owner wants to throw at them.

It is buying the PL regardless, but perhaps different ways of doing it.

agreed, and a valid point on source of money, but the hypocrisy of some to say that utd aren't doing what others have (buying the league) is laughable. (not you btw)

Ah it is. In reality, aside from the odd fairytale, who isn't doing it in football these days? At least in the big leagues. Money equals power these days, so I find it odd that it is such a big issue.

What really bugs me is how nobody appreciates what lower clubs/fans feel about it. I mean, to watch say United pump £100 million into a squad while their team can only afford a fraction of it, and then complain about someone else buying the league.

As a Cardiff fan we have spent, cost cut, spent etc it is mad to see. Honestly, the best run club appear to be the Jacks, and good on em 🙁

Aye, you lads have been through the mill a bit so it is hard to watch. Would have liked Cardiff to still be in the prem. True enough, they are a very well run side, with some of the best purchases I can recall in recent seasons.

Norwich annual revenue 2014 was 94m £ according to their financial statement. Profit excluding player trades was 26.1m.

According to a quick googling session

                Martial 36.0m
                Memphis 31.0m
                Scheiderlin 25.0m
                Schweinsteiger 14.4m
                Darmian 12.7m
                totalling about 120m in signings.

That's rubbing the money in the opposing fans' faces.

i think united fans would argue that buying it through the money made by themselves on the back of unprecedneted success over the last 30 years in particular is alot more noble than being bankrolled by some oil rich owner.. not so much to do with the old tat u refer to

Not sure what you are on about really. No team has ever won the league with 11 homegrown youth squad players.
Players don't appear magically. Every player is purchased. Utd fans are aware of this as much as anyone. I think you have an over active imagination

It's a moot point. You know a Utd fan who criticise others for trying to buy the league, I know a Celtic fan who thinks they'd win the premier league every year. That doesn't make all Celtic fans deluded.

Which GKs and Defs are people bringing in on WC? Aside from Kolarov, noone really stands out.

Was set on Romero until yesterday. West Brom situation also unclear. And Palace. I needed 4 more weeks really to see what was going on.

    Butland, Schmeichel
    Kolarov, Bellerin, Shaw, Gomez, Prodl

    Feels expensive somehow.

I'm keeping Butland and wondering what the best pairing is. Currently thinking one of Krul, McCarthy, or Gomes.

Among your defenders, I think that Gomez and Bellerin will be rotated a little. I'd go for more nailed on options.

For defenders I like 1 MCI, 1 SOU, 1 5.0, 2 4.5. Which currently is working out as Kolarov, Targett, Alderweireld, Ward, and Francis. But I'm sure this can be improved -- maybe with a Swansea defender for Alderweireld.

Personally I think ayew is much better value and the stats are pretty similar. Hes playing as a second d striker and seems to get plenty of headed chances.

Pedro has defensive responsibility with ivanovic bombing forward whereas hazard has more freedom with azpili minding the house. Hazard will come good and I think we'll all want him at some point, meaning you might have to double up on Chelsea milfs, when they don't appear as reliable attacking wise on current evidence.

Net spend of transfers out is way more than transfers in.

      This old conundrum again 🙄

City had a Sheikh who payed for transfers
United had sponsorships who payed for transfers

At the end of the day, both clubs are spending far too much. I'm sure clubs like Stoke and Norwich look at both Manchester clubs in the same light.

I've found a lot of United fans trying to justify it now that the shoe is on the other foot. At least when City spent £300mil they had a league to show for it, United's transfer policy has been dreadful imo.

I'm a neutral btw, just my opinion.

I just think the priorities are all over the place lately.

2 years waiting on a CB still, and three strikers have left this summer without a replacement. 20 hours to go with a 19-year-old being put forward as the saviour for £37mil?

Personally I would like to see a proven striker in their prime like Benzema or Higuain in addition to another striker like Austin. It'snot like United to leave these things until the last minute and splash millions out on potential when they need instant impact.

      2. Wilshere Knowledge

I wonder whether it's actually good for other clubs, because City's and United's huge resources trickle down the league. Wolfsburg selling KDB for such a massive fee, for example, means they have lots of money to reinvest.

In a way, but then it just seems to reflect businesses in real life.

Almost like big corporations buying out smaller ones; they might get a nice lump sum but their ability to compete is practically nullified. Football has moved waaaaay too much from being a sport and faaaar too much to being a business.

In fact I would call it a business.

              • 10 Years

True, but they have also created domination through smart signings like Alonso, Bernat, Thiago and even Douglas Costa (in this day and age).

Gotze was a sneaky one, but Lewy was a no brainer as he was free.

They make good signings of course but there's more to it. Look at when Gotze was announced to be leaving Dortmund for them, in the CL before they played each other right? Lewandowski again was a case of offering him insane wages Dortmund couldn't manage, simple as that. Even Klopp, before their Pokal match with Bayern I think it was Beckenbauer who came out and said they wanted Klopp to manage Bayern one day. It is all tactical, not just towards Dortmund.

For example, I believe they were huge supporters of Financial Fair Play. Why? Because they could go out and spend triple what any other club could and not face consequences, thus safeguarding their dominance.

Absolutely, I'm just saying that their domination isn't a case of just nullifying threats, they are a very well run club. And in every league, clubs often buy within because they are proven in the country.

As for Beckenbauer, I've seen him talk a load of nonsense, a lot of which very harmful to Bayern. He's one I really try to avoid now.

Of course, and I'd hate to think it comes off as I'm saying that is the sole reason for their success. It is just that, like any business that wants to establish a monopoly, the make sure to drive down competitors as best they can. You can see it in the league now, its over a month or two early these days.

Aye, an absolute BS spouter, but serves a purpose to sow seeds of doubt in other minds.

Exactly, that's basically what title-contending teams like Chelsea/ City and now United are trying to do.

Trying to remove the competition by outspending and establishing a platform for themselves to dominate from. But when you have two mega-rich owners with a hunger for success and power, you can see where things get out of control with stubbornness and expenditure.

Chelsea's purchase of youth players over the last 4/5 years for example. The likes of Marin, Thorgan, Kakuta, Atsu, etc. that stop other teams from developing them for themselves.

In theory, I'd love to see every team get £50mil per season and see how they get on. Would certainly put an incentive towards youth investment. But it would probably end up being crap.

Coca-Cola don'tneed to advertise at all, everybody knows who they bloody are. But if they don't, the likes of RC, Dr. Pepper, Pepsi, etc. buy that airtime and slowly get more customers.

Exact same for these clubs, buy up the window and you buy up the success (in theory)

If prices are inflated by the sheikhs and the Romans , what other choices do you have?
19 y.o @ 35 quids would seem like a bargain in the face of 50 plus quids spent by the sheikh on a player.

It's easy to blame it all on price inflation from the likes of Chelsea and City, but what have United done to try and counter this?

How many youth players do you see starting in their lineup compared to the Class of 92. United could've taken a hit in the league and dropped to 4th/5th under Ferguson whilemore youth players played and developed but they didn't want to do that.

Now they are selling/ losing all of their youth products; the likes of Pogba, Henriquez, Shawcross, Welbeck, Pique. (just to name a few off hand)

Anyone considering Mata, seems to be under the radar but I suppose United's attack is poor.
