Hating university right now; miss home and my family so much. Not use to this change; been crying for about 20 mins and I honestly am probably going to drop out in the next week or so. Spoke to my mum and she said to stay put but I really don't want to.

    Any help please?

        ^this too.

Working hard on your studies takes your mind away from your worries, try that. Use Skype to keep contact with your relatives. Go to parties, openminded, and you'll get new friends and soon won't want to go back home at all.

Mate, it always take time to adjust.

Stay for a bit longer. Join a few social clubs (what sports do you play? Or even join a new one, like Ultimate Frisbee). I'm sure you'll feel better once you have a few people who you can relate to and socialise with.

Give it a few more months to get settled would be my advice, if you can stand that.

. You will miss your family and friends but thats normal. Give it a chance. Can you go home on the odd weekend? Can you invite your family or friends down for a weekend? That will help with the transition.

      been there, done that.

A lot of people find it really tough initially so don't worry about that.

Are you in shared accomodation and have your classes started yet?

My advice would be simply do as much as you can and meet as many as you can. Sports clubs, warhammer, whatever you are into. Eventually you will meet people you really get on with and then it gets easier and easier.

Ok, but i see above you are actually enjoying your course part of it which is a really good start.

How long have you been there now? It sounds like you are homesick which is totally natural and really common.

Have a look at some of these suggestions:
          http://www.counselling.cam.ac.uk/selfhelp/leaflets/homesickness

Skype is theobvious solution in terms of speaking to your family though.

As others have said, if you are really down, go and try speaking to your university advisors or anyone else you trust.

Alternatively, if you are feeling nervous or embarrassed (you shouldn't be) I'm happy to give you my email as well if you want to talk (as HoH as offered as well).

Exactly. It's a short time. That will get better the longer you are there. Any change like this, if you suffer it, the first weeks are the worst. If you continue to suffer after some half a year, then see a doctor and discuss the issue, and maybe then drop out.

Try to look it the other way round: this is your chance to live a life out of your home, without your family, explore a bit and find the world.

I might not understand this well, though, I was extremely eager to leave home back in the day and never looked back.

Well I had couple of tough weeks (nothing like you though) as well as I was one of the very few ones not from that state. However, made some friends, focused a bit in studies and yeah, kept talking to family - these helped a lot.

Also, if you take initiative and reach out to people to befriend them, rather than waiting for them to rach out to you - that will be helpful

Don't listen to anyone giving you crap on here. University isn't for everyone. Speak to a career advisor and assess your options. There are alternatives, such as apprenticeships. Get in touch with an advisor, you won't be the only person going through this.

if you need a chat just say.
i've experience with the above in work and home lives and talking to people is a start. it doesn't have to be "deep", but just don't bottle things up.
if it still is hard tomorrow allow yourself a designated 15 minutes to release the upsetness (not a word). small steps. day after do 10 minutes.etc

      What is it you hate?

Personally I adored university and wouldn't trade that time for anything but I know my wife didn't adapt and dropped out after a couple of months. I don't think either of us regret our decisions. I would try to ride it out but this has to be your decision.

Stick it out mate, I went through the same. It was the hardest thing ever but it really does get better. When people say it's the best time of your life that just makes you feel twice as bad when you're not enjoying it. Every aspect of your life has suddenly changed overnight - it's totally normal to feel like you do. It's just a shock to the system at first. Small steps, don't get overwhelmed with everything. You can do it.

It can be a big adjustment especially if it's your first time living away from home. You may miss your family, friends and home comforts, combined with coming to terms with new surroundings and new places etc. My advice is to try as many new things as possible, clubs and societies I mean. See what clubs there are and what interest you and join them. Some you may drop out of after a couple of weeks while others you may really enjoy over the next couple of years. This will be a good way to get to know people. If there are class parties go to them and meet new people. Even if you don't want to do that make yourself do it, you will make friends that will last a life time. Also consider your career, is this something you want to work at, if so then don't give up on it lightly. Also you are not alone, others will be having similar problems and the university will be use to it and will offer support. Talk to anyone you are missing on Skype so as to not feel you are missing them. If after all that you are still unhappy then perhaps it's not for you and there is nothing wrong with that either. Best of luck.

Now for a more productive response.

As many have said leaving home for the first time is very difficult for many. I remember a guy in his 20s who kept crying when he left his family. Most people eventually get used to it. What really helps is getting yourself occupied with stuff (hobbies, friends etc.) so you don't have time to get upset. There will come a point when you'll think this is actually quite good and years later thank yourself for making the decision to stick it out.

This is provided homesickness is your only worry which seems the case as you said you enjoy your studies. We all love our families, home and ultimately our comfort zone but you grow and develop immensely as an individual once you're out of your comfort zone. Keep at it and there come a time when uni will feel like a second home

So many insecure dudes in here playing the tough card 😆

I know how that feels pal as I'm also in college, really the best advice I can give is to go out & meet people. Join a club you're interested, play a sport, tutor, etc, But be proactive & make it a conscious effort, there's nothing like a good group of friends to chill with & talk to about shite like this.

Was so close to making a bad taste joke about guns

My advice, it really depends on what type of person you are, easy to say make friends but you might be a right boring git or have terrible body odour , though that may help at uni. you may well have come from a good background where your mum made all your meals and washed clothes. Give it time to get used to that stuff and once in a routine you will see how you feel then.

The first few months at Uni are terrible, especially if you're a long way from home and can't easily go back. For most it's the first time they've ever been away from soon, and almost certainly the first time it's for any extended period of time

I really urge you to try and see it out a bit longer it will get better; I promise you that you will not be the only person feeling this way. You'll meet people through your course obviously but I urge you to join a society or 2, they are really good ways to meet people who share similar interests to you

If you still feel this way in a couple of months then it may be time to reasses but please don't drop out now.

I promise you, keep an open and positive mind and after a little while when you've settled in you enjoy it. Few weeks or months of homesickness may feel like a lot now, but when you look back at it afterwards, it really is a meaninglessly short time compared to the rest of your life during which you can be happy about having gone to university.

      Do not quit.

Dude its been a week, try and ride it out. My school always gave the advice to call home as much as you like but don't even visit home in the first six weeks and I think this was great advice. You get that contact with your parents but you don't miss any spontaneous weekend events or parties that there always will be at university which are a great way of meeting people and feeling more at ease.

Are you having doubts about your subject? If you are, ask your personal tutor about switching subjects to something you really find interesting. Universities are usually very accommodating with subject changes and you wont regret it.

You've had great support & some very good advice tonight, that alone should help for now but use it for the following days and weeks as well.
Life can be tough, dark & impossible at times but getting through these challenges are what makes you in the future and you'll be a better person for it. Remember you're never alone or the only person feeling this way.
Malcolm above offers good advice (amongst many others).

Like the helpful ones said, join some clubs and give them a good go. Most of the friends you have at the end of uni probably won't be the same ones you meet in the first couple of weeks. If in a bit you really don't think uni isn't for you, it's not the end of the world to pull out. Depending on what you want to do career wise, you can make a good living without it if you work hard and you can go back again later if you feel you want to. There will be people on campus you can talk to help you make a decision.

To Every Dog has its day, my son went to the same Uni he loved it, but hated sharing a house with four strangers, I told him to come home, if he wasn't happy and he did. Worked for year, and then went back to Uni closer to home, he has just graduated, and has now moved to London as a Marketing Exec for the station were 'not all TV is the same' ps Uni is not for everyone, talk to your family. Good luck.

It's hard to adjust but lots of posters have given good advice (ignore the dicks), focus on the bits you enjoy such as the course. It's important to realise there will be many others in the same boat, but it gets easier, Skype your friends to help get you through, but do get out and about to meet people and give you the opportunity to make new friends. Lot of international matches coming up, get down the bar or local pub to watch some and experience some communal joy or pain - invite some of the flatmates to come - its a chance to start to get them out of their rooms and get to know them.
You have worked hard to get this opportunity - don't throw it away after a few days - give it a fair chance - make a deal with yourself to stick it out for a whole term and assess then - if you still hate it then then fine maybe it's not for you, but by then hopefully things will look a whole lot different. At worst you have wasted a couple of months of your life, the alternative is you could spend the rest of your time regretting a hasty decision (more so even than buying Jonny Evans!)
Join societies, see bands, drink beer, see if the university offers counselling or mentoring support to help you settle in, study hard and enjoy the course, hang in there and give it a chance.
Most importantly think of it as as chance for at least 3 years where you can delay having to do a proper job, chuck it in now and you have to join the grown ups and earn a living (and trust us that's why we say university really is the best years for most people and why we would trade places and replay them in a heartbeat)
Hope things get better for you - its at times like this you find the ffs community aren't all jerks and many of us will help you get through. Email some that have offered to talk - you will find many of us have been in similar positions and may be able to share the odd pearl of wisdom or provide a listening ear.

No worries, problem shared and all that.

It may sound glib and daunting to say get out there and make friends but remember so many other people will be in a similar position as you find youself, so there is great potential to make new friends as many others are looking to do the same to ease their own path into this big frightening new challenge. The clubs and societies bring people with similar interests together thus giving you some common ground which is half the battle to making friends (and thus more likely to connect rather than just endless comparison of your A level grades!) Maybe try one that is outside of your comfort zone - try a new sport perhaps - team bonding may be a better way to establish new friends if you lack confidence in making one to one contact (plus the odds are better if there is a group of you brought together with a common purpose) - don't worry if you have never tried the sport - University is about learning far more than just your course. Things really will improve rapidly once you establish one or two friends, before you know if it will hopefully be one long social extravaganza.

Look out for hall events to get to know people close by - suggest a curry or Chinese night with your flatmates - try and get each other out of the rooms and talking - these are your most likely initial support network - you have already found one girl who has knowledge of what you are feeling - that's a great start and I am sure she will empathise and be positive to talk to.

Give yourself something to look forwards to - any nearby Man City away trips you could secure a ticket for to meet up with some friends from home to make a day to catch up? Avoid the trap of going home though, if still finding it hard, it might be just too difficult to make the trip back at the end of the weekend - get you fix via Skype, Facebook or whatever is your thing.

You have just hit the hundred club in ff; think how hard and depressing the first few game weeks were: many on here were considering throwing in the towel and quitting - you hung in there, did some research, put in the groundwork, took some hits to remove the negative unproductive elements, and suddenly you see the rewards. Now doesn't the season suddenly look a whole lot more positive and you are starting to enjoy the game and get some positives out of it after 7 unrewarding rounds? I think there is a metaphor in there somewhere, just can't quite put my finger on it.

If all else fails, think of this weeks results for the Manc clubs - that should give you something to smile about. Think of this as your Gillingham 99 moment - don't leave the stadium too early just because it currently looks like game over (.......must resist ruining advice so far with a poor Dickov opportunity sign-off!)

Since posting earlier, one thing has been niggling away at the back of my mind.

Much like asking for advice on transfers and captain choices on here, its ultimately your decision that you have to stand by. Just wanted to say we have given you some constructive advice which hopefully may help ease the transition, but if you find it too to be hard to settle, please please talk to people: on here, your family or student councillors (but maybe not in that order!) You have taken the hardest first step by posting on here so hopefully you are able to do this.

I have bad (distant) memories of a couple of people in my first term at Uni who ultimately it was too much for them and they took the worst possible way out - such a waste. Please don't feel pressured to stay simply to meet expectations of family or others, only do what is right for YOU. If no improvement after giving it a fair crack, there really is no shame quitting - it may be you are not emotionally ready for this yet: you could discuss with your tutor if there is the opportunity to come back next year when maybe you will be better equipped to cope.

As with your transfers, don't make kneejerk decisions - back your own judgement then give it fair time to deliver positive results - things won't always come good straight away, be patient and hopefully it will improve.

Like others will be happy to offer support or a listening ear (eyeball?) if you need someone - but others will have much more recent experience, I will be happy to do so as may find myself in same situation with my son in two years time.

Hang in there - fingers crossed for you.

The question you need to ask is not whether a DGW player will out score Aguero in the game he just played, but whether you'll see him pull something close off the game you triple him in...

A double gw player might not sure score 25 but it's also very unlikely that he'll get back to back hatricks

I had a very good week, 115, and am up to rank 9254, yet am thinking of wild carding given the 2 week break. This my team, any thoughts about going wc?

    Schmeichel, Butland
    Williams, Koscielny, Kolarov, Prodl, Francis
    Sanchez, KDB, Payet, Mahrez, Westwood
    Martial, Aguero, Vardy
    1FT, WC, 0.0 itb

I would make 6 transfers now, losing Schmeichel, Williams, Kosc, Francis, Westwood and Martial, and get Hennessy, Monreal, Soare, Pelle, and Hoolahan. I'd then have two weeks to adjust based on international break injuries, etc.

    Thanks

Would Hazard + Özil + Azpilicueta --> Sanchez + KDB + 4.3 Def be an overkill for -8?

    Butland
    Kolarov | Azpilicueta | Francis
    Hazard | Özil | Payet | Mahrez | Mané
    Aguero | Ighalo

    Rudd | Diouf | Huth | Targett [1FT / 0.0m ITB]

for 5.3 and 1% ownership he looks too good to resist

Its so funny how every week after the Chelsea game , everyone starts buying the attackers from the opposing team. EVERY week. Ivanovic and his mates ,made so many wingers superstars its not even funny. Pelle is as he has always been. You'll be wondering what to do with him in 2 weeks.
