Injuries

Treatment Table – Gameweek 8

Arsene Wenger and Manuel Pellegrini confirm that Alexis Sanchez and Sergio Aguero were withdrawn for precautionary reasons ahead of the upcoming internationals. West Brom have worries in defence, whilst Liverpool’s playmaker pulls out of the Brazil squad due to injury earlier today. Here’s our round up of the weekend injury news…

Arsenal
Alexis Sanchez came off after 81 minutes against Manchester United in visible discomfort, though Arsene Wenger was quick to allay fears over any injury, confirming that the wide man is set to feature for Chile in the upcoming internationals:

“He has a little groin problem. Unfortunately he goes to Chile. You cannot stop him from going to Chile and he loves so much to play for his country and he will play against Brazil [on Friday] and Peru [next] Tuesday so the game at home against Brazil he will not want to miss. Hopefully he will come back in good shape.”

Aston Villa
Ciaran Clark sat out the Villains’ 1-0 home defeat to Stoke City after picking up a thigh strain, Tim Sherwood has confirmed.

Chelsea
Goalscorer Willian was replaced by Loic Remy at the 64-minute mark of Chelsea’s home clash against Southampton, with Jose Mourinho later explaining that he took counsel with the club doctor after the Brazilian became ill during the break:

“When the fans boo the Willian decision, I would do that too if I didn’t know he was vomiting at half-time and the doctor said it would be hard for him to carry on.”

Leicester City
Jamie Vardy received a heavy blow to the knee in the first half of Leicester’s trip to Norwich City but was able to carry on and complete the match. Claudio Ranieri sought to allay fears over the form striker’s fitness, insisting that Vardy sustained no serious damage from the collision:

“No, nothing serious. When I saw Vardy on the ground I thought it was a bad injury because Jamie never stays down. When he came close to our bench, the physio said it was his knee, but he was stable and he continued to play.”

Liverpool
Philippe Coutinho has withdrawn from Brazil’s squad ahead of their World Cup qualifiers, with Liverpool’s official site offering no details on the nature of his injury.

Danny Ings confirmed he sustained a minor injury during the Merseyside derby but expects to be fit for upcoming England duties:

”I struggled through the game – I just got my ankle caught in Phil Jagielka’s legs. As the game went on I felt that I couldn’t move as much. It will be assessed but should be fine.”

Manchester City
Following his five-goal frenzy, Sergio Aguero was substituted after 66 minutes at the Etihad. Manuel Pellegrini said that the Argentine marksman received treatment at half time after taking kicks to his back and hamstring in the first period, so the Sky Blues boss elected to exercise caution and manage Aguero’s minutes:

“He had treatment at half time, and to give him more minutes he could have scored but we must be cautious about his fitness, because he could be injured. Last season Kun finished the season without any problem. He is doing a different preparation, so I’m not worried about injuries, you can be injured by kicks of course but muscle injuries he should not have any more.”

Newcastle United
Newcastle United defender Kevin Mbabu picked up a hamstring complaint in the process of trying to prevent Aguero scoring his third goal of an eventual 6-1 thrashing. The Switzerland U19 international is now set to undergo a scan to ascertain the extent of his injury.

Norwich City
Lewis Grabban rolled his ankle during training last week so was ruled out of the Foxes clash, but Alex Neil expects him to be sidelined for longer than a week.

Stoke City
Marko Arnautovic was subbed off 21 minutes from time after scoring the only goal during the Potters’ visit to Villa Park. Mark Hughes played down the reason for the winger’s withdrawal:

“He just cramped up in his back which needed unlocking.”

Meanwhile, Mame Biram Diouf was stretchered off in the second half after damaging his hip. Hughes admitted that the striker is unlikely to team up with Senegal during the international break.

“He’s been in a bit of pain. He’s got an issue with his hip and hopefully hasn’t done anything to the capsule in the joint. But he’s struggling to walk and I’d be surprised if he meets up with his international team because he’s in a lot of pain and can’t weight bear.”

Swansea
Kyle Naughton missed yesterday’s home draw with Spurs due to personal reasons, reports in the local press have confirmed.

Watford
Jose Manuel Jurado missed Watford’s trip to Bournemouth with a hamstring injury, while Ikechi Anya has been given the go ahead to travel with Scotland despite being subbed off with a leg injury.

West Bromwich Albion
Jonny Evans lasted just 24 minutes at Crystal Palace after picking up a hamstring strain, while James Morrison took a blow to his ankle in the second half. Both players underwent scans to determine the extent of their injuries:

“We’ve got a problem with (James) Morrison – he’s felt his ankle. The home nations, we want to help them as much as we can. Me in particular, if I can. Fingers crossed they’ll be okay. If they’re anywhere near it, we’ll give them a chance to play. It will be all down to the doctor. He’ll scan them tomorrow. The scans now are fantastic so he’ll know whether they’re serious injuries or not.”

Elsewhere in the Baggies camp, Gareth McAuley suffered a recurrence of the calf injury that saw him miss the home clash with Everton last Monday. The defender is expected to recover in time to start for Northern Ireland during their World Cup qualifiers.

Darren Fletcher has trained for Scotland earlier today despite picking up a knock during West Brom’s loss at Palace.

West Ham United
Winston Reid was subbed off after 66 minutes at the Stadium of Light, whilst Victor Moses has withdrawn from international duties with Nigeria, claiming a lack of fitness.

Current options - whatcha reckon lads?

    A) Huth -> Janmaat
    B) Pedro -> Wally
    C) Targett & Pedro -> Berty & Wally (-4)

    C) sets me up quite nicely and means I can probably save a transfer in GW10 and use 2 in GW11 for the fixtures swings (rather than WCing in GW11).

    Ruddy
    Kolarov, Bellerin, Huth
    Sanchez, Pedro, Mane, Mahrez
    Aguero, Pelle, Vardy

    Rudd, Sinclair, Coates, Targett
    Bank 0.6m, 1FT

      Doing almost the same

      Gomez to Bert
      Pedro to Wally.

My one issue is Yaya, if hes back then Pedro to him may tempt me (No KDB, or Silva)

For a -4 or do you have 2 freebies?

I think Yaya will be back personally and that he is a good option. I'd still prefer Wally though. No MCY mids either here.

          would be a -4.

            *close as i have Sanchez

Just not sure on the points spread of 2 'big' mids from the same team. Maybe im being too close mined. Maybe i have to look at Wally as a forward, then it looks good

That's just it. He is a forward. And he has a HUGE goal threat.

Yeah, had a chat a few pages back about Jaanmat. I see the potential and position etc but can just see myself sitting back in 3 weeks time thinking, why the f did i bring in a defender from the worst defense in the league?

Just my opinion, totally understand why others think differently.

Indeed. Mate, like i said i understand the appeal and could be completely wrong. I m going safe with Bert as (i think) if hes still in my team around Xmas i will be happy and dont feel the same about Jaanmat. Fed up of messing around with my defense.

                    Good luck with it.

            I think I'm either:

            A)
            GW9: Huth -> Janmaat
            GW10: Pedro -> Wally
            GW11: Wildcard

            Or

            B)
            GW9: Targett & Pedro -> Berty & Wally (-4)
            GW10: Save
GW11: TBC (but likely getting some EVE/MUN in)

Given Berty's next 2 fixtures (LEI, liv) can be wait until a GW11 WC? Not sure there are any clean sheets there.

The key thing is Pedro. Same issue for me. Is it worth a -4 when hes playing, we hop, vs Villa at home?

Yep, that's it. If we knew that he starts then it's not worth a hit.

I guess I could just do Pedro -> Wally and then still save next week. Downside is playing Huth (sot) this week.

So true, i never shy from points hits if needed but yours, and i guess my, situation doesnt scream it needs one. If Pedro is dropped again and Wally scores a hatful you will find me crying.

Yeah I was, but they've shipped a few in recent weeks and isn't JEvans, McCauley and Olsson all injured? Fixtures also get tricky soon. I'm thinking Myhill is the best route in to the baggies defence. Ruddy -> Myhill coming up soon me thinks.

To be honest I'd avoid our defence until we're not reliant on Chester - look at when he's started and the lack of cleansheets compared to when he hasn't. Hopefully after the break we'll have a fit back four...

Yeah, he looks the best from the back 4. And those fixtures are excellent. But they get bad afterwards and as I mentioned, they look a little less tight at the back of late. Dawson is certainly a good option at 5.0m though given the goal threat as well.

Will this defense 5 work? to free up more funds

Dawson, Kolarov, Ward (when fit), Nyom, Morgan/ Moreno (not sure if Klopp will like him)

    currently have:

Dawson, Kolarov, Richards (such a waste thus far at 4.6), Gomez, Cedric

Agree, getting in defenders with rotation risks/ potential is just lining up a FT for later, same with injury prone one, ahem J Evans, who didnt see that coming?

    * = injured / may not play

    Butland Randolph*

@SJ, just the man I was hoping to find.

Was posting earlier about Gabriel, do you think he's first choice now?

4 CS in 5 league starts (the only one he didn't keep on was the red card incident)

Albeit one of Kos or Mert have been injured in all cases he started, you reckon he's nailed down a starting role?

Personally I see Kos - Gabriel being first choice pairing for the league, with Mert coming in for cup games.

    What says you?

      hey bud.

he's been really impressive. before the season wenger said that gabriel would get a lot of opportunities this season, and the manager's been true to his word.

would tend to think that he's 1st choice now...but you can't discount the tried and tested kos-mert combo. mert is vice-captain as well and one of the few real leaders arsenal have on the pitch.

short term I think it's worth the risk. I see gabriel starting the next few PL games. great price as well.

I share this view with you. Gabriel is first choice and playing well, great value at 4.9 But some rotation is of course possible, depending who is the opponent team. If your other defenders are nailed on, he's definately an option. But personally I'm still considering whether to choose Bellerin or Gabriel...

      Morning

Depends if you want another expensive defend in Bellerin. You already got Azpi and Kolarov. I say get a 4.5 playing def or so. Dawson is a good shout also, might catch the rise price.

As for Martial hit, fixture and form wise is the same. My problem with Martial is Rooney is the one playing number 10. If only LVG has the balls to drop Roon for Herrera.

There's gotta be some serious planning ahead for that fixture swing in GW11.

Which of the following attacks would you double up on from GW11 onwards, keeping in mind that the striker from the respective team must be a reliable partner to Aguero in a 3-5-2?

    Southampton (Mane Pelle)
    Leicester (Mahrez Vardy)
    Everton (Barkley Lukaku)

yea hoping Vardy gets a few more rises by GW11 - pencilling in Lukaku/Pelle for him that week. Currently have Mane so Southampton double is an easier target.

        • 10 Years
        8 years, 7 months ago

I've considered a double up on City but I just think it's a tad too expensive a combination seeing that KDB is the top of my wishlist while other cheaper attacking midfield options (like Ayew, Payet, Mane) have good fixtures and free up 2-2.5m for an upgrade down the line like Vardy>Pelle/Lukaku.

Tough decisions later on, on captaincy. Will you still (C) the 13.3 Aguero eventhough the other two has plum home fixtures.

          • 8 Years
          8 years, 7 months ago

I've decided to captain someone else when City play Bournemouth. Aguero's returning from an international break with a massive CL game that will guarantee he gets subbed as soon as possible. Everyone will captain him which gives a massive opportunity if you captain say Mane or Pelle. All about whether you have to balls after GW8.

            8 years, 7 months ago

      2. Shifty
        • 10 Years

That is a possibility too. Funny you should mention that, i'm currently on a 3-5-2 with front 7 of

        Sanchez Mane Payet Ayew Mahrez
        Aguero Vardy

If I downgrade Ayew to a cheap 5th, I could get Aguero-Lukaku-Pelle up front by GW11 but it would take 2 consecutive -4s

Not sure if i'll ditch the 3-5-2 yet.

If I'm not mistaken they had a horrible start last season too - then there was a month or two when they were very good.

    2FTs & 2.1 itb i'm

Sagna > VVD or Monreal or just Davies ( but i'm breaking one of my rules : don't get Spurs def )
Sakho disappointed me with just 1 goal vs Norwich & Sunderland so maybe i'll prepare my self to EVE good run and Get Lukaku now

    Thoughts & Suggestions Guys ?

Any City fans know when Clichy's back? Planning on binning Kolarov the moment he's fully fit but it's all gone completely quiet. Probably still stuck in Callum McManaman's pocket since the Cup Final.

    Kolorov Nyom Janmaat
    Payet KDB Mane Mahrez
    Aguero(c) Lukaku Pelle

    Sinclair Darmian Oxford

I love my current midfield, and have no intention of changing it... till next week when everything changes again! It's:-

Sanchez - de Bruyne - Payet - Mané - Mahrez

...but I grow increasingly worried about the impact of Walcott. Seems to be finally becoming nailed, and this was why I wanted him on GW1.

Anyone want to reassure me he's gonna troll all his buyers in the near future?

        You're right. Can't have everyone.

My front three at the moment is:

        Aguero - Vardy - Ighalo

So while he wasn't bought as such, I'm now considering Ighalo as a bench player in a 352 (most weeks)

Who would you have in mind to exchange for Walcott if I may ask?

I actually thought that immediately after posting this... Absolutely no-one! There's only Sanchez and KDB I could afford him for, and they're a no--no!

walcott will continue to troll, there is no clear cut answer as to whether walcott or giroud are first choice, so i would avoid him

I absolutely am. As per the above responses, I don't think I would be improving my midfield anyway.

    Morning all,

Am I right in thinking Ings --> Pelle for free is a no brainer, right?
