Scout Scribbles -Sanchez a Doubt for Chile

Alexis Sanchez remains a doubt for Chile with a groin problem. Andre Ayew withdraws from Ghana duties, Wes Hoolahan is a worry for the Republic of Ireland, whilst Stoke skipper Ryan Shawcross steps up his recovery from a back injury.

Sanchez Concern for Chile

Alexis Sanchez is a doubt for Chile’s World Cup qualifier against Brazil due to a minor groin complaint sustained against United on Sunday, according to manager Jorge Sampaoli:

“Neither Vidal nor Alexis are confirmed for the Brazil game. Neither player has been in full training since travelling to join the Chile squad this week.”

The Scout Says: With five goals in his last two starts, Sanchez’s exceptional underlying stats are finally being translated into explosive Fantasy returns after he managed just one assist in the opening six league matches. Over the past four Gameweeks, the Chilean livewire ranks top among midfielders for attempts (21), while only Theo Walcott has tallied more shots inside the box (17 compared to 16) and attempts on target (10 to seven). Over 166,000 managers drafted in the 11.2-priced midfielder after his hat-trick against Leicester, whilst 155,000+ have acquired his services after the brace against United. Sanchez’ 22% owners will be hoping for positive news when the teamsheets are announced later tonight, then, with Chile set to face Brazil just after midnight.

Ayew withdraws from Ghana squad

Andrew Ayew is still feeling the effects of a knock he picked up during Swansea’s 2-2 draw against Tottenham Hotspur so did not travel with the Ghana squad to face off against USA on Wednesday.

The Scout Says: Much to the frustration of 110,000 owners that shipped him out in the last two rounds of fixtures, Ayew netted his first goal in four outings against Spurs. The former Marseille man registered just three key passes and one attempt on target between Gameweek 5-7 yet his return to form sees him sit fifth in the midfield standings so far. Providing he recovers in time, Ayew’s 21% ownership will be optimistic of further returns ahead of a schedule that pits the Swans against Stoke, Villa, Norwich and Bournemouth in the next five matches.

Hoolahan concern for Ireland

Wes Hoolahan is a doubt for the Republic of Ireland’s Euro 2016 qualifier against Germany later today after sitting out Tuesday’s training session. Assistant manager Roy Keane revealed that the Norwich City midfielder picked up a problem during Saturday’s home loess to Leicester:

“Wes has a knock on his heel from the weekend and it’s pretty sore. The fact he didn’t train today tells you it must be sore. I think with Wes’ injury another 24 hours will make a big difference to it.”

The Scout Says: If not for his considerable rotation risk, the 5.2-priced Hoolahan – who’s bagged one goal and five assists across 504 minutes – would surely boast an ownership that far exceeds 5.5%. Unfortunately, Alex Neil has displayed a willingness to drop one of his top attacking assets depending on the nature of the match-up, with Hoolahan most recently rooted to the bench at Liverpool in Gameweek 6. Nonetheless, those in possession of the 33-year-old playmaker will feel confident in retaining him for the next two Gameweeks (new, WBA) at least, given that the Magpies shipped 12 goals in their previous four outings, while the Baggies conceded nine across their quartet of home clashes.

Shawcross steps up recovery

Ryan Shawcross clocked 45 minutes for Stoke City’s U21 outfit as they drew 1-1 against Port Vale last night. Discussing his comeback with the local press, the Potters skipper is keen to build up more minutes over the international break:

“It was always planned to play 45 minutes. I’ve got a few niggles just from coming back so I need to let them settle down and hopefully I can kick on again next week. “I felt good. It’s just a case of building on it now. Hopefully next week I can get a 70-minute game in and then move on to a full game in the coming weeks. It’s up to the manager to see when I can get back involved. I haven’t trained with the first team yet so I’ll look forward to doing that. But I will stay with the under-21s for probably another week or so. It’s all about game time and then we’ll see after that. At the moment I’m trying to make sure I get the right minutes and the training between them is right.”

The Scout Says: Aside from Jack Butland – who’s amassed nine save points and two bonus points – and, more recently, Glen Johnson (two assists in as many starts), the Potters’ rearguard has proved to be lean on Fantasy returns. Mark Hughes’ men only claimed their first clean sheet of the campaign last time out against Aston Villa and have conceded more big chances (22) than any side, highlighting their lack of resilience in Shawcross’ absence. After three months on the sidelines, it remains to be seen whether Shawcross (priced at 4.8) will prove his fitness in time for the Gameweek 9 trip to Swansea, though the following two fixtures (WAT, new) bodes well, given that Watford and Newcastle are amongst the joint-lowest scorers in the league, with just six goals apiece.

Dummett and Haidara back in training

Defenders Paul Dummett and Massadio Haidara could return to the matchday squad for Newcastle’s home tie against Norwich next Gameweek.

The Scout Says: With Daryl Janmaat nursing a knee knock and third-choice left-back Kevin Mbabu sustaining a hamstring during the Toon’s 6-1 defeat to Manchester City, Steve McClaren will be encouraged by yesterday’s news after a poor start to the season. Newcastle’s defence as a whole have produced little for Fantasy managers to get excited about, save for Janmaat’s unparalleled goal threat – he ranks top among his counterparts shot on target (six) – despite facing six of last season’s top eight sides already. With an excellent run of fixtures (NOR, sun, STO, bou, LEI, cry, LIV, tot, AVL) now on their agenda, the likes of Janmaat could appear on our radars should the Magpies’ main men prove their fitness, as McClaren attempts to steer his side out of the bottom three.

Anya sidelined for Scotland

Ikechi Anya will play no part in Scotland’s match-up against Poland later tonight after failing to shake off a calf complaint that forced him off at Bournemouth in Saturday.

The Scout Says: Serving up zero goals and two assists, Watford’s midfield – which is comprised of six members who have clocked at least 300 minutes – has seldom generated discussion among the FFScout community this season. Certainly, Almen Abdi has looked the most likely to deliver attacking returns over the past four Gameweeks, amassing six shots and 14 key passes – only three midfielders created more chances over that period. Valued at just 4.8, the Switzerland international threatens to be a profitable budget pick-up if the Hornets can improve their scoring output.

Deulofeu impresses on Spain duty

Gerard Deulofeu bagged two assists for Spain U21s as they ran out 5-2 victors over Georgia in their European Championship qualification match.

The Scout Says: Deulofeu muscled his way into Everton’s starting line-up for their last two outings, having initially impressed during a 26-minute cameo against Swansea in Gameweek 6. In his first start of the campaign, the ex-Barcelona winger teed up Romelu Lukaku on two occasions as the Toffees came from behind to record a 3-2 win over West Bromwich Albion. Deulofeu lasted just 59 minutes in the Merseyside derby, though, with Aaron Lennon taking his spot on the flank. With Arouna Kone also in the mix and Kevin Mirallas now free from suspension, Deulofeu faces a tough task to retain the role on the Everton right, with playmaker Ross Barkley looking the most secure option as the schedule takes a turn for the better from Gameweek 11 onwards.

I've got 3 midfielders flagged (Yaya, Sanchez, Ayew), and 2 who didn't play a minute last week (Mahrez, Sako).

    5-0-3 anyone?

Yeah, Sako has got to go at some point, I've got a 0.1 buffer on a price fall.

I'm just going to get a 4.5 bench fodder who plays, I think.

Not too sure on Yaya. It depends on whether Sanchez plays for Peru which is the later match or not. Ayew will be fine as he is resting in the UK which is also a mild knock. Mahrez should be playing. Sako seems to lose his spot to Zaha and might not get a start, but playing a sub might be possible which boils down to luck.

Worry more for Yaya and Sako first. The rest will do well.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

    The Next Best Player

Let's assume Sanchez will be fit for the next match. Is he now cemented into the ideal team template? Or is Walcott or Ozil a viable alternative.

And what of Aguero. Surely he should be in every team now? But is it viable to go with his cheaper team mates like KDB who will surely benefit from his points.

What are your experiences of going with the 'next best player'? Can it work, with money free-ed up to spend elsewhere? Or, as GWK 8 showed, are the likes of Aguero and Sanchez worth every penny.

Every season there are 2 or 3 players who you can't go without. Or rather, you can, but it makes life extremely difficult.

Henry and Lampard; Ronaldo, Gerrard and Lampard; Suarez and Bale; RVP.

      Make savings elsewhere.

It's all about balance. You have to have some big hitters otherwise you get hurt when they fire (Gw8 the example). To identify the next best thing is a combination of stats, observation and pure luck. The big boys are worth every penny but the next best thing is usually the cheaper options that fill out the team to accommodate them. Building TV is extremely important in helping this so you can afford those with potential as they usually come from the mid prices bracket.

I wouldn't go without Aguero but I think this could apply to Sanchez. It certainly did last season when I swapped him for Ramsey. At the end of the day we're probably talking about the two top point scorers at the end of the season so I'm not sure it's worth the risk. Plus the fact they are two great captaincy options and in a plum fixture it'd be very nerve racking going in with second best.

Huge fortune required if you go without aguero and Sanchez. Du bruyne may be the exception and considering doubling up with aguero given what we have seen so far

Regarding Aguero and KDB, I feel much more comfortable owning Aguero, these stats for De Bruyne are very limited.

Walcott on the other hand is already showing signs that he could equal Sanchez' output for the season and plays up front, so I don't think he counts as a second best player.

Agree that you can't go without the big hitters in top teams where there are good underlying stats (Sanchez, Aguero). However with teams not expected to be in the top four I feel you can go for 'next best' in order to ensure funds for the top heavy hitters. For example Barkley instead of Lukaku for Everton's kind upcoming fixtures, also Southampton where Mane is slightly cheaper than Pele in FPL but returns won't vary drastically...

I feel that Walcott is a viable alternative to Sanchez and when he is nailed , he is more dangerous than Sanchez as shown by his superior attempts on target . Also Walcott has the best goals or assists/min ratio in the Premier League . Surely , Sanchez cant be better than that . If Giroud does not start for France in the International Break (which I don't think he will) , I expect Walcott to be nailed on

Instead of Sanchez , I am pinning my hopes on Hazard . He has been creating a lot of chances and key passes but has only 2 assists to his name (excluding FK's won) and Hazard has consistently scored 200+ in each of the last 3 seasons . I am even considering giving him the armband(quite unlikely tho) against Villa .

Ah ok - you're talking about the volume of stats. I was reading it like the quality of Theo's shots on target were better than Sanchez's - Which I don't think they are. Theo seems to have a much higher percentage of failed one-on-ones or scuffed shots straight at the keeper.

While city have such juicy fixtures I'll be captaining Aguero so not in a major rush to bring in Sanchez but will most likely do so in a few GW's time.

I have tried in the past with going for the 2nd best player in a team, you can get more coverage of the best teams but you just seem to miss out on the points! I have gone with aguero and Sanchez this year and surprise surprise in doing much better. The key is getting the right big hitter!

Its all about the bonus points magnets in each team, Kun at ~13.5m only has 3 so he's possibly not their ''best'' player, who might yet be Kolorov (10 bonus points), Silva or KDB.

I feel Aguero is different, now that he's being fed by Silva and KDB.
You could Captain Aguero every week regardless of fixture and most will. Alexis, i'm not so sure. You'd be nervous putting your Cap on Alexis, when you know near 30% of all managers have it automatically on Aguero?

Therefore if you don't captain Alexis, is he worth the extra 2.5m over Walcott. I'm not so sure.

That 2.5m can be used to upgrade other areas. At the moment, it's just a shame there's no template defence to which to divert those funds. No defensive bankers have emerged like IVA/Terry from last year.

Have you not thought about Aguero resting and getting injuries as he is usually prone to during the season?

I don't see why I should not capt Alexis against Sunderland (home) when Aguero is against Chelsea (away)?

Chelsea at home let in 3 against Southampton. (ManC > Sot)
Sunderland at home let in 2 against West Ham (Arsenal > West Ham)

Sunderland will have a new manager, which will mean they will be totally unpredictable.
          They players will be either
          a) playing out of their skin for their jobs
          b) better organised, no new manager will play an openly against arsenal on day 1
          c) a total shambles, with an arsenal rout.

Is it such a clear decision?

Man c scored bucketload sun first 7 gws, how many assist and goals did Aguero get?

And to the above regarding Chelsea, it is captain hindsight on their defensive worries. And they do have the class and quality to turn around anytime and deliver a few clean sheets in a row, you have to just guess it doesn't turn at the point you captain an attack against them.

I don't think it would work. People often say that two 8.5 attackers, in theory, are better than a pair like Aguero and a 5.0 player. But it's so hard to predict which two mid-priced players will keep pace with the best striker in the league and the latest budget bandwagon.

This is the approach I have taken with Sanchez for the time being. I have KDB, Wally and Aguero.

      Would I like Sanchez? Yes.

But I prefer being able to have Pelle up front with Kun and Vardy, with Payet/Barkley/Mahrez complementing the midfield.

Defence: Kolarov, Williams, Cameron, Richards, Targett.

With strike force of Kun, Pelle and Lukaku in mind - I can only have one 10+ mid in my squad (Silva atm).. To get another big mid will disturb my whole squad structure.. I will have to get one cheapest mid and my def will be shite.. Like for now its (Kola/Azpi/Cedr/Janmaat/Targ) and (Mahr/Ayew/Payet/Bark)... Soon i am looking to downgrade Silva to Ozil n upgrade Ayew to Mata.. 8-9m players are good alternate to 10+ mids, with no damage to whole squad structure.. And also with this I can have *Mahrez* as my 5th mid.. And Kun takes care of Captaincy most weeks, with enough options for differential captain..

Mahrez is an exception this season(or for now) like Kane was last season.. In general there are no 6m mids you be comfortable playing every week, they are 6m for a reason.. Or you just have to spend your FTs and keep switching to form 6m mid..

We should also consider the impact of Champions League, or injuries.
Alexis and Aguero will surely be rested ahead of some of the big games.

If both are rested in one week that's 25m on the bench. You team will consist of a couple non-playing 4m defenders, and wanyama coming off the bench for you.

I believe that if Walcott carries on playing up front, he'll score a similar number of goals and assists to Sanchez. The difference for me is the bps. Wally will not get any bonus based on his current baseline bps from a single goal or a pair of assists, whereas you'd expect Sanchez to consistently get 2 or 3. With Walcott also not being entirely nailed on, I think that the extra outlay for Sanchez is well justified.

With cheaper strikers firing, and decent lower priced midfield options, we can all afford to have 2 or 3 10m+ players. For me this will be Sanchez, KDB and Aguero.

Always been the ultimate FPL question, and never been resolved in my mind. I'm thinking Coleman instead of Baines, Ramsey instead of Sanchez, Fabregas instead of Hazard, etc. Most of the time the more expensive player prevails and gets more points overall than the cheaper option. But this then becomes a whole value/balance debate, as you could get Fabregas and Ramsey in your team a lot easier than Sanchez and Hazard.

Every now and then, the cheaper option get more points as well (I'm thinking Toure when he was cheaper than Silva)

I think you are very brave to go without both Aguero and Sanchez right now. Granted that will take a chunk of your budget but they are the only players right now likely to produce such spectacular returns and are clearly at the peak of their form.

The real question for me is whether to double up on City and Arsenal attacks since it's fair to assume they will be the highest scoring teams in the league. I have KDB but I'm really tempted by Walcott too.

Too many eggs in one basket? Too expensive?

It's perfectly reasonable to have Aguero, Sanchez, KDB etc all in your team. I don't think there is really a need to go for the next best alternative.

Why would you need to? To save funds?

What are you going to spend those funds on?

Heavy hitters most likely, which go by the name of Aguero, Sanchez, KDB etc.

As a Mancity supporter - just as Granville took an early gamble on Martial, so also i did on KDB.
If you look at his involvement in City games so far, you'll realise that he had progressed game by game and this is largely due to his acclimatisation and understanding more of his team mates and their movements. A few times his role overlapped with that of Silva but his workrate is in my opinion superior. And each time Silva gets substituted, KDB naturally takes that pivotal role and with time i won't be surprised before GW 18 he'll be nearing the £11m mark.... watch the space!

Alright, International Break, where the WC calms tears and storms.
Should I use it now to better this team? Or will a FT be sufficient?

    Ruddy (Butland)
    Azpi Cedric Kolarov (Nyom, Huth)
    Silva, Payet, Mahrez, Ayew (Wanyama)
    Martial, Aguero, Sakho

Silva -> KDB seems ok but meaningless. Ayew is yellow flagged, most likely he will go if out. Martial is definitely a shout, with Everton and possible goals against City. Sakho & Payet have weird fixtures, with Crystal Palace doing magnificently but against a struggling Chelsea.

Yet, "shocking"? Gibbs, has quite likely the worst pass completion rate in PL after the little he has got to play in PL, yet "has played very well given the chance". My old man said, "Follow the van, don't Delle Ali on the way!"
Off went the cart with the home packed in it,
I walked behind with me old cock linnet.
But I dillied and dallied, dallied and dillied,
Lost the van and don't know where to roam.
You can't trust the specials like the old-time coppers
When you can't find your way home.

My old man said, "Follow the van, don't Delle Ali on the way!"
Off went the cart with the home packed in it,
I walked behind with me old cock linnet.
But I dillied and dallied, dallied and dillied,
Lost the van and don't know where to roam.
Now who's going to put up the old iron bedstead
If I can't find my way home?

Would any of you guys consider doubling up on Sanchez and Walcott at some point?

If I jiggle my defence around a bit I can get:

    Myhill (4m fodder)
    Cedric - Bertrand - Evans/ Dawson - (Francis - Richards)
    Sanchez - Walcott - Silva - Mahrez - Payet
    Aguero - Vardy (Watmore...urgh)

If I wanted to do in one week it'd be a -8, but I'd do it over a few gameweeks most likely so it was free. Just a hypothetical at the moment though really - weighing up whether it's worth keeping Ayew instead...

I have both Walcott and Sanchez, but I wouldn't fancy having Watmore even if you are planning on playing 3-5-2.

Yeah, Watmore was a bench fodder thing that's sort of come round to bite me in the arse haha. He's like that chore that I keep meaning to get round to but never want to use a FT to fix! I'm also a sucker for avoiding points sat on the bench... last season that spot was taken by Bobby bloody Zamora for some of the time (!)

For those of us planning a GW11 wildcard ahead of United and Everton's excellent gw11-18 run, what United coverage do you think is important to have?

Although United haven't looked fantastic so far this season I still think that their defence + Mata+ Martial will score well over this period, however are they overpriced? Martial is probably the player out of the united selections that offers the most value, but will he outscore Lukaku over this period?

I haven't got a wildcard intact, but I am hoping to get Darmian & Lukaku and perhaps Coleman and Martial.

I'm not 100% sure getting 3 united and 3 everton players is that necessary.

If I was going down the United road I'd opt for defensive cover. Attacking wise I prefer the delights on offer from the likes of Everton and Southampton.

I have same dilemma and I think I will not take a hit.
      3 most likely cases:
      1. Richards will get 1 point - hit-guy will get 2 (not so unlikely since cs hard to get(only 3 last weekend)?)
      2. Richards will get 1 point - hit-guy will get 6 (ok, then you will not lose, but not gain much)
      3. Richards will get more points than hit-guy (unlikely)

So if you weight those cases...Play Richards

Over the summer I read a number of really interesting posts about alternative fpl strategies. Ie. not sticking to 3-4-3 / 3-5-2, allocating funds in an unusual way, VORP etc.

Now things have slowed down on here, I'd be interested to hear from anyone who had the bottle to with an alternative strategy. How's it going so far?

Most of my midfield - Sanchez, Ayew and Yaya Toure. The other two are leftovers from more major injuries (Lovren and Ward) who are less pressing concerns.
