The Community Round Up

The community got their stop watches out this week as they discussed the media storm created by the exact timing of Southampton defender Cedric Soares’s substitution last weekend. As well as Cedricgate, we also cast our eye over the key community articles and hot topics looking ahead to Gameweek 10’s matches. In addition, we’ve squeezed in an extra few minutes to focus on some of the most eye catching latest Members tables and events in our community leagues.

The Community Articles

To help get prepared for Gameweek 10, three of our regular community writers were on hand to offer advice on transfers, bench decisions and captaincy issues.

Your Mum’s Athletic’s latest What The Bookies Say looks at captaincy options, clean sheet potential and likely outcomes of the weekend’s matches based on bookmakers odds.

Elsewhere, Rodellegabomb has been casting his eye over the latest bandwagons and The Serjeant has been looking at possible shut outs, a key player to consider and team form going into Gameweek 10.

Don’t forget, if you’ve got some analysis, scout reports or features brewing, be sure to visit our community section to submit your article.

The Hottest Topics

Our Hall of Fame, featuring the best managers over a number of seasons, has been updated to take into account Gameweek 9’s event.

This prompted The Colonel to take an indepth look at the Hall of Fame top 50 and compare this bunch of ‘old pros’ with the lucky ‘casuals’ currently topping the Fantasy Premier League.

Looking ahead to the weekend, Liverpool’s first home clash in the Premier League under Jurgen Klopp is among the key matches the community is keeping an eye on. Klopp’s team ran Spurs ragged last weekend as his ‘Gegenpressing’ strategy of knackering out your own team as well as the opposition took effect. But, pondered Wakey, how can injury prone Daniel Sturridge fit into this system?

Another keenly anticipated match is between free-scoring Leicester and away specialists Crystal Palace. Despite being benched for the last two matches JazzliHD urges caution before transferring out Riyad Mahrez. He believes his display as a substitute in Gameweek 9, where he earned an assist, will be enough to convince Tinkerman Claudio Ranieri to reinstate him into the starting line up.

If Mahrez does start and produces the goods, he adds his name to an already-congested midfielder watchlist. With so many wingers and attacking midfielders vying for our attention, we asked whether it was time to return to a power five formation, with just two strikers. For Valar Mesut Ozil is among those deserving of a place amongst this elite group.

Further advice going into Gameweek 10 was on hand from Zasa, who has been trawling the latest statistics to serve up a wealth of numbers on everything from attacking potential to clean sheets. There were further names to consider for those looking to steal a march on their mini-league rivals in our hot topic on Gameweek 10’s best differentials.

We also looked back what Gameweek 9 has taught us in Rough with the Smooth, with failed early transfers during an international break of players a key lesson learned for a number of our community members.

Another key event from Gameweek 9 under discussion was Cedricgate, which sparked a national press and Twitter debate after community regular Fuzzy Warbles questioned FPL’s decision not to award Southampton defender Cedric Soares clean sheet points when substituted around the 60 minute mark.

After taking a battering from journalists and the Twitterati, as well as praise on our Scoutcast, Fuzzy returned later in the week with his views on the media storm his letter to FPL created.

Looking further ahead Gameweek 11’s shift in the fixtures, where Everton and Manchester United embark on kind runs, is set to dominate discussion next week. We covered the subject in our latest Scoutcast and also asked the community how they planned to address this change in fixtures.

The Members Tables

With Gameweek 11’s fixture shift in mind, tillster2003 has taken a look at the best Everton defenders last year as a reminder of their potential.

Knightrider’s latest table considers the attacking threat of Steve McClaren’s Newcastle – another team with good upcoming fixtures. Meanwhile, Scorcher Prime has been looking at the best and worst defences so far this season.

If you’re a member and are yet to get to grips with the custom statistics tables, you can view this movie for an explanation of how they work. Also, remember to tag them so that people can find the tables with ease.

The Community Tournaments

Colin Bothwell had quite a week in Gameweek 9. His score of 67 was enough to propel him to the top of RedLightning’s Top 10K Any Season mini-league. Colin now leads 10 mini-leagues, including AZ’s cash league, thanks to his overall FPL rank of 175.

Balders dropped by with news of a new five-a-side themed tournament set up by recently-formed FFScout community group Fédération Internationale de Fantaisie Football Scout Association( FIFFSA). Meanwhile, the latest standings from Balders’ Grand Play-Off competition can be found here.

Jaffalicious sent this update of the latest standings in his FFS UEFA Champions League competition, while in TorresMagic‘s Last Man Standing competition, Sushant hit the top score in Gameweek 9 with 105. There are now 1873 teams that have qualified for LMS, after 149 were eliminated when the safety score was set at 38.

Finally, it was business as usual in the FFScout Moderators and Contributors league with Andy extending his lead over second-placed Greenwindmill.

If you are running a community tournament and would like the latest scores included in future Community Round Ups please email me a brief summary of the current leaders and a link to your league, spread sheet or head to head competition, at jonty@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk.

Still trying to work out who to captain. Just thought I'd jot down my thinking. Feel free to point out flaws and what not.

Sanchez - He's tired after all the football he's been playing lately. I don't think he'll be as good as he has been, we need to consider future potential not past success.

Walcott - I'm convinced he will start up front and Jagielka is no spring chicken. I think he's a dark horse this week having been rested midweek

Vardy - The mans been in amazing form but I do get the sense it cant continue for another week, he'll be singled out by the Palace defence as the key threat and will be marked carefully.

Mahrez - He'll start IMO and all the play will go through him. Might be afforded more space than Vardy and will be eager to impress after two benchings.

      I'm currently on Vardy

Interested on your views on Walcott (see my Q below) - would you bring him in as well as Sanchez?

In your position I'd bring in Ozil over Walcott. Giroud could easily usurp Walcott but Wally needs to show he isn't a good enough striker first.

In other words, Mahrez (C)? 😀

Good points. I see Leicester Palace being an attacking game so it'll probably be one of the Leicester lads for me.

Another point is that Mahrez is on pens/ corners

After last weeks sub appearance and taking international duty into account Mahrez will be due to start this week. Also the palace fullbacks are nothing to be feared.

That they may be, but if ranieri's logic for benching Mahrez against Norwich was sincerely that he feared their wing play, then he's surely got to bench him against palace doesn't he? Sure, the fullbacks aren't as marauding, but the palace wingers are some of the best in the league.

Fullbacks defend wingers. Mahrez isn't a fullback so there is no issues there.

Was Walcott really 'rested'? I thought his substitution was tactical. I wouldn't captain him this week as I think there's a chance Giroud will start. The other options don't convince me either this week, it's a tricky one for sure.

Oh really? in that case I think that all but rules out Walcott for me. Although in saying that he probably doesn't expend much energy as a striker so it probably wouldn't phase him.

Yeah it was tactical and Wally was the only player who looked ineffectual vs Bayern in the whole squad, everyone else put in huuuge shifts.

Its a possibility but I think Wenger still favours Wally currently. I would be very wary of captaining Wally. I had Wal(c)ott but I've just moved to San(c)hez in case Giroud does get a start.

Wally won't get 90 of that I'm sure. Thats probably enough of a reason to avoid putting the armband on him.

Yep and with his low ownership, just owning him will be enough of a differential if he does explode.

Sanchez is a player who always gives 100% though. And Everton looked poor against United. Arsenal is still the best attacking team in the league but Sanchez does look tired and there is a 10% chance be could start from the bench.

Mahrez starting does help Vardy as I think Mahrez finds Vardy way too often. That said, Palace are a good team and great away from. vardy doesn't super convince me either but atleast hell play 90 minutes.

Alternatively I could just put on Costa. No Reid.

I expect Sanchez to start but only be at 80% performance. He'll give all he's got but unfortunately he doesn't have a full tank. Despite that though, Arsenals form could still be enough to see him do well.

I'm a little scared captaining a Leicester player because I agree that Palace will be a real challenge. Already having two assets might be enough and adding a captaincy would be putting too much faith in them getting the result.

Costa would be a good shout this week. I'd captain him if I had him.

Whenever Vardy and Mahrez have played together, Mahrez has come up with two, three more points because BAPS are always more in his favour.

On the other hand, Ozil, Giroud and Walcott all are coming into their own meaning Sanchez might not be getting more double digit hauls. These points will be shared among the offensive line.

This is the hard choice, but its between Sanchez and Vardy. I think Sanchez is the safest option, he will do well. while Palace have been very good like Leicester so it wil be a close game.

Yes Palace will see Vardy as the threat, but the real question is can they deal with Leicester right now? more importantly can they stop them from scoring? because unless they keep a clean sheet away a Leicester (can't remember when it last was anyone did that) then there's a 95% chance Vardy is involved in the points

I'm not sure I believe in that % but he will be involved for sure but perhaps only once. I'm punting on the idea that Mahrez will be more involved.

          • 8 Years

true maybe i over exaggerated the % a tad lol, but you get the point, remember it's not who will win the game, it's who's gonna get the goals. Pardew will now he will need to get a goal or 2 so I can't see him parking the bus or anything, classic palace counter attack which could chain a few goals in the game I just can't see Vardy not getting involed tomorrow, Mahrez will be just as dangerous if he starts, but on Vardys form hard to pick Mahrez over him for the armband. Look at it this way, if we are right about Sanchez/Vardy/Mahrez we are in for som good returns this weekend whoever we captain 🙂

    Repost (apologies)

Who would you pick out of Erikson / Walcott / Wij?

Rest of midfield is Sanchez / KDB / Payet / Mahrez

    a) Erikson - great fixtures and reasonable form
    b) Walcott - you said it yourself.. good form but rotation risk (plus have Sanchez)
    c) Wij - differential and New have strong fixtures..

Risky move innsie. If I had to punt in a captain this week it would be Kane (c) no doubt.

'Tis indeed LR. I like to take risks from time to time, and weeks like this where there's no standout captaincy option are the best weeks to try something different. If it backfires, I've only got myself to blame, but it'll add excitement to my weekend... After all, that is what FPL is all about.

I have Costa. Captain him as a punt?

Having him enough I feel. He got points last week but did not convince. The goal was on a platter and the assist was a fluke.

More importantly the midfield is not firing, a striker does need his midfield, unless he is named Menaldo.

A little late in finalizing my team this week and won't have time tomorrow to do it before kick-off. Good to go as is?

    Butland
    Dawson - Naughton - Haidara
Sanchez (vc) - De Bruyne - Wijnaldum - Coutinho - Mahrez
    Vardy (C) - Pelle

    Schmeichel - Sakho - Kolarov - Francis

    A. Silva 3-5-2 (if fit)
    B. Bony 3-4-3

    osta captain. Final.

Reason : West Ham have conceded 5 goals in last three matches. If a team can concede against SUN and NOR, trust me they will concede against CHE.

Currently, Willian, Costa and Hazard look the most likely goal scorers. Costa was involved in both goals last week and looks poised to get a double digit haul. I know his stats need to improve. But then again, Norwich doesn't have the best defensive stats either. Cheers !
