Digest

The Digest – Gameweek 10

Harry Kane’s serves a timely reminder of his goal-getting credentials with a treble as Tottenham run riot at Bournemouth. Sunderland are on the ascendancy under Sam Allardyce, whilst Everton’s eye-catching schedule looks set to bring their main men under close Fantasy attention.

The Player

A weekend hat-trick at Bournemouth finally saw Harry Kane reignite his Fantasy season after a stuttering start to 2015/16.

Elevated into the premium bracket on the back of 21 goals and seven assists in a last year’s breakthrough campaign, there were fears that Kane was suffering from second-season syndrome, that top-flight defences were beginning to figure him out. A summer playing for the England Under 21s ensured he was anything but fully refreshed as domestic matters got underway and, with just a single goal to his name in the opening nine Gameweeks, his price had understandably dropped from 9.5 to 9.2.

The underlying numbers suggested otherwise, though. Kane was getting the chances – he was just struggling to tuck them away. His treble against the Cherries will no doubt be a real morale boost and with the north London side now facing four home matches in six, beginning with a weekend visit from Villa, the scramble for his signature has seen over 60,000 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers bring him on board.

Granted, Kane does square up to the likes of Arsenal, West Ham, Chelsea and West Brom over the next six but, as we witnessed on numerous occasions last season, he’s fixture-proof when firing on all cylinders. With Mauricio Pochettino’s side now unbeaten in nine, including a 4-1 home thrashing of league leaders City, their main striker could well be set to reward us further as Spurs look to maintain their momentum and improve upon their current sixth place finish.

The Team

Sam Allardyce could not have wished for a better way to endear himself to the Sunderland faithful after a 3-0 win over Newcastle clinched a sixth successive victory over their bitter north east rivals.

Handed the reins after Dick Advocaat departed on the back of three points in the first eight Gameweeks, Big Sam lost narrowly at West Brom in his first match in charge before Sunday’s win over the Magpies at the Stadium of Light.

The weekend showing will certainly boost Sunderland’s confidence at both ends of the pitch going forward. Under Advocaat, they’d conceded 18 times and failed to keep a clean sheet – with Big Sam on board, that’s two goals against in as many matches. Costel Pantilimon served up ten points with his first shut out of the campaign, whilst Allardyce’s starting back-four all came in under 4.5 in FPL, highlighting their cut-price appeal.

In midfield, the 5.0-priced Yann M’Vila’s assist sees him lead the way, though Big Sam will also be looking to get the best out of wide men Jeremain Lens and Adam Johnson in his bid to beat the drop. Up top, Steven Fletcher – at just 5.0 – has two goals and an assist in three and could be another name to consider in the budget third striker slot if he can steer clear of injury.

Allardyce’s record of having never been relegated stands the Black Cats in good stead, then, and it’s clear his impact is already taking effect. The upcoming fixtures are mixed, though with a trip to Palace and home encounters against Stoke and Watford in the next six, the Wearsiders could be back on our radars before long.

The Talking Point

With a dire run of fixtures now finally behind them, Everton’s main men seem primed for investment as the schedule starts to ease significantly for the remainder of the calendar year.

From this weekend until Gameweek 19, the Toffees embark on a nine-match streak which sees them welcome Sunderland, Villa, Palace, Leicester and Stoke to Goodison and also pay visit to West Ham, Bournemouth, Norwich and Newcastle, boosting their prospects for points at both ends of the pitch.

Encouragingly for would-be suitors, Martinez’ main attackers have flourished in the first ten Gameweeks, despite going head-to-head with all of last year’s top eight over that period. The 8.4-priced Romelu Lukaku sits fourth amongst forwards, with five goals and a pair of assists, whilst Ross Barkley, at 6.8, offers a cheaper option in the centre of the park. Already, the latter’s three goals and as many assists have bettered his output from 2014/15, underlining his improving form as a viable Fantasy asset.

At the back, there’s no doubt that Phil Jagielka’s knee injury absence could prove detrimental to Everton’s chances of bringing in the clean sheets. The Toffees have managed three so far, though with just one shut out in the last six, the centre-half’s absence may persuade many to court caution here. Nonetheless, with Seamus Coleman racking up nine goals in the last two years and Leighton Baines edging towards a first-team return, there’s no shortage of options from back to front for those keen to invest in the Toffees’ chief protagonists as Martinez looks to take advantage of the schedule and steer his side further up the table.

Looking to do Morgan to VvD, but Morgan looks like he's gonna drop before Soton's match tomorrow?

Will that drop affect you? If you are unable to buy VVD then forget it but if you still can, no point taking risks.

Yeah, and only two assists away to Arsenal and City earlier, so it clearly shows he'll regress when the fixtures take a turn for the worse.

I saw some stat about West Ham's conversion rate being unusually high. Put them in games where they'll have less chances to score and their number of goals will regress.

I've not even bleedin' owned him yet!

Always important in this game to look forwards, not back. I'm not at all saying selling Payet is wise, but if you have reasoning to your decision, then his prior points are somewhat irrelevant. Many factors make up a decision like that (form of course, but fixtures, the form and fixtures of other options, underlying stats, team stats etc.).

Yeah I'm not selling at the moment regardless of fixtures, Pulis tightens up even more against better sides. Plus, teams like Man Utd and Liverpool aren't exactly in sparkling attacking form, WBA could well shut them out fairly comfortably.

Mahrez has been very unlucky. His PPG is ridiculous.

There were 2 penalties when he wasn't on the pitch he would have taken over Vardy, that's a big point swing after BPS.

If Ranieri wasn't such a tinkerer I'd have (C) on him every game.

Got 2FTs and 0.1m in the bank. Any thoughts on transfers this week? Hazard out?..

    Begovic - Hennessey

    Bellerin - Cedric - Dawson - Moreno - B Davies

Hazard - Sanchez - De Bruyne - Payet - Mahrez

    Pelle - Vardy - Ighalo

Sterling, but I don't know. nothing working right this season. If I transfer out Haz, he might sneak a peno & assist and Sterling(who i might replace with) would be benched. Such is the luck atm.

Tied between 2 for the armband, don't see any other contender really.

    A) Bony (NOR)
    B) Mané (BOU)

Bony has a 4.1% Ownership and Mané has an 8.8% Ownership! Shocking really, they're in every team I see on here. Looks like the FFS Community will go ahead again! 🙂

Then a huge No if it is for a hit

        My current front 8 are

        HAZARD Mahrez Payet Yaya Sanchez
        Ighalo pelle Vardy

No need for a hit and just do Hazard > KDB/Mane?

No need to take a hit when you have a benching dilemma already. I'd personally do Hazard to KDB/Mané and keep Ighalo. Both KDB and Mane are good options.

What are people doing with Martial? Panicking due to blanks and reverse oop or holding steady as he he does looks pretty good and fixtures picking up? With 2 FTs Kane is looking mighty tempting.

I think it's bring in Kane now or don't bring him in until uniteds fixtures get worse which is a while yet!

    2. Doolittle
      • 11 Years

I'm doing exactly that Kane switch I think. May go Lukaku, but either way, certainly selling Martial. He's been shunted wide to accommodate a contender, on form, for the worst striker in the league. Rooney is untouchable for club and country, he's completely undroppable no matter what depths he plumbs with his performances, and Martial is the sacrificial lamb this time.

That Rooney display in the derby is one of the worst performances I've seen from a central striker at a top team in a very long time. It's not just that, he's been absolutely dreadful for 12+ months now. What does he have to do to get dropped? Shag Van Gaal's mum?

it was disheartening to watch. Martial was going past City players like they weren't there (much like the Rooney of old used to do) but because he was wide left he either had to come inside or put in a cross when there was no one in the box

Who knows what damage he might have done centrally, especially as Kompany was already on a yc for a foul on him

I think it's a matter of time before Rooney is given an extended "break" and Martial moved back to striker.

        1. Doolittle
          • 11 Years
          8 years, 6 months ago

That should be what happens, but I'm not going to hold Martial waiting for Rooney to be dropped, because I could be waiting until Rooney's contract is up.

I don't. People are blinded by fixtures sometimes, who from that attack would you want!? Rooney is absolute garbage, Martial has been stuck on the left to accommodate Rooney, Mata and Herrera are rotation risks (again because Rooney has to play). No one there appeals at all.

current mid of Sanchez, Payet, Ayew, Mahrez, Wanyama and have pretty much made the decision to bench Mahrez due to having Vardy

    Wanyama > ??

    A) KDB (uses all in bank, safe but boring)
    B) Sterling (rotation risk and unreliable)
    C) Mane (have Pelle although this doesn't really matter)
    D) Get punty (Cabaye/Wijnaldum/Barkley/Eriksen)

    Cheers

Anyone without Mahrez and Payet in their team?

I think at this stage both have established themselves as season keepers for a number of reasons, the main two being

    1) Set pieces - always a bonus

    2) Value - allow for heavy hitters such as Aguero, Sanchez, KDB elsewhere

At start of season its not a good thing to invest too much in defense. But what about now? We have so many players with good value, Vardy, Mahrez, Ighalo.
Then why not go with 3 expensive (5,5+) and 2x4,5 or even one of them 5,0.
OK, Im talking myself into Kolarov, Bellerín, Smalling or
2 of them and someone like Van Dijk better?
