Scout Picks

Scout Picks – Gameweek 11

We turn away from a 3-5-2 and opt for a rare 4-3-3 formation in Gameweek 11’s Scout Picks. Southampton, Spurs and Everton supply our starting XI with a pair of players apiece, whilst we load up on City’s main men in anticipation of a goal haul at home to Norwich’s dire defence.

With Seamus Coleman now a real doubt due to a stomach bug, we turn to Tim Howard as coverage of the Everton defence for a home encounter against Sunderland. At 5.1, the US international has earned save points in eight of the first ten Gameweeks and faces an attack that has failed to score in each of their last three road trips.

Virgil van Dijk is our Southampton defender of choice for the visit of Bournemouth. The Dutchman racked up ten goals and six assists for Celtic last season and has already scored twice in six appearances for the St Mary’s outfit, underlining his points potential in the opponents’ box for Sunday’s clash with Eddie Howe’s strugglers.

City’s home clash with Norwich brings Aleksandar Kolarov into contention. With Vincent Kompany back in the mix, the league leaders’ prospects of a clean sheet have improved, whilst the Serbian’s raids down the left see him sit second for both attempts (14) and key passes (16) amongst defenders so far.

Tottenham’s out-of-position prospect Eric Dier is brought on board for Monday night’s visit of Villa. The youngster has already netted twice from his central midfield berth and bearing in mind that Mauricio Pochettino’s team have conceded just once in their last four at the Lane, Dier looks a viable option for points at both ends of the pitch.

We also call upon Newcastle’s raiding right-back Daryl Janmaat at home to Stoke for the final slot in our four-man defence. The Dutchman has served up a goal and assist over the Magpies’ last three matches at St James’ and has fired more attempts on target (six) than any defender this term.

Kevin de Bruyne is the first of our two big hitters in the centre of the park. The Belgian has racked up 30 points in his three home appearances and, up against a Norwich defence that lost six goals at Newcastle in their last road trip, it’s little wonder that he’s leading the way in this week’s Captain Poll.

Arsenal’s trip to Swansea hands Alexis Sanchez another chance to get amongst the goals. After a slow start to the season, the Chilean has found his top form and produced three sets of double-figure hauls in the last four Gameweeks. Having netted four times in his last two away matches, he’ll fancy his chances against a defence with just two clean sheets to their name.

Sadio Mane also makes our three-man midfield. The Senegal international has three goals and an assist in the last four Gameweeks and will be fully refreshed for the visit of Bournemouth, after serving a one-match suspension against Villa in midweek. Given that the Cherries have conceded five times in the last two, Ronald Koeman’s side will be heavily backed heading into Sunday’s match.

A hat-trick at Bournemouth last weekend suggests that Harry Kane is finally starting to rediscover the form that took the top-flight by storm last season. Furthermore, the Spurs frontman has produced more shots on target (12) than any striker in the last four and now faces a Villa defence that’s conceded at least twice in each of their previous four road trips.

We call upon Romelu Lukaku to do the business as Everton entertain Sunderland at Goodison. There’s no doubt the Belgian can frustrate as a Fantasy asset but bearing in mind the Black Cats backline has allowed their opponents more shots inside the box (103) than any side this season, he could be set to add to his five-goal tally this Sunday.

Wilfried Bony completes our three-man frontline as City prepare for the visit of Norwich. Manuel Pellegrini’s men have now racked up 16 goals in their last three home domestic matches and with two goals and an assist in his previous league appearance at the Etihad, the Ivorian is proving an able short-term deputy for Sergio Aguero.

Chelsea’s Kurt Zouma makes the bench for the visit of Liverpool. Granted, the Blues have struggled for defensive returns in recent weeks but bearing in mind their visitors have scored just three times in five road trips, a clean sheet could be on the cards for the hosts tomorrow lunchtime.

Ross Barkley completes our quota of three Everton players for the visit of Sunderland. The playmaker took his tally to three goals and as many assists with a strike at the Emirates last weekend and has already surpassed last year’s attacking output. The Merseysiders have put three past the likes of Southampton, Chelsea and West Brom this term and look strong favourites against Big Sam’s strugglers.

With five goals and as many assists to his name, Graziano Pelle has played a part in ten of Southampton’s 16 strikes this season. The Italian found the net in a midweek home cup win over Villa and with three strikes and a trio of assists in his last four league fixtures at St Mary’s, is second only to De Bruyne in this week’s Captain Poll.

THE COMMUNITY CHAMPION

Having scrapped the weekly vote idea from last season, we now operate a lottery system to pick our weekly candidates. The community member who beats our picks by the biggest margin over the campaign will win a £100 Amazon Voucher and a place in our Contributors and Moderators League for the following season.

In Gameweek 9, Community Champion Boris Bodega came close to taking the lead after beating the Scouts 49 to 34 in Gameweek 10. However, his 15-point advanatage was still one point short of Massive, who retains top spot – he beat us by 16 points in Gameweek 6 and stays in the lead to claim the £100 Amazon voucher.

This week’s Community Champion is S Kuqi. His team is as follows: Cech, Kompany, Rose, Van Dijk, Mane, Sterling, Yaya, Eriksen, Pelle, Kane, Giroud.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Actually, this is such a redundant comment. Can't a guy get excited about the thought of a talented player playing with other creative talents? Just some fun speculation. But no, there has to be a negative comment. Things like this are a really bad experience on this website.

So how do we feel about the whole playing your attackers against your defenders problem?

Especially this problem: Mahrez and Vardy vs Myhill.

Do you feel like you nhave to pick one or the other, or do you see them as hedging each other's bets?

Play your best GK for the week. You need to play one and if they play your attackers then hope for lots of saves.
Same goes for your 13 outfield players. Pick the best 10 within formation and hide the other 3.

I agree with your general point, but like everyone I don't think you quite deal with the two attackers from a single team dilemma. I reckon if you think it really makes sense to play both, then how can you risk playing the GK? You're investing two spots in a single team's attacking success, so it surely says something about the GK they oppose?

My problem, of course, is that I have no GK to play except Myhill. 😳

Just hope he doesn't get minus points.
If the 2 attackers do well, you don't really care about the GK as much.

A CS = 10 + baps etc vs conceding 1 which could be up to 20 points for 3 players.

I get this. It's an OK result, but there is a strong temptation to get in another keeper so that there is at least a chance of a win across the board.

I personally think it's picking one or another. Benching Myhill and Evans personally and playing Vardy and Mahrez.

I am inclined to think so when you have two potent attackers like in this situation. I don't think you can or should try always to avoid having players on opposite sides, but it seems mad to play two attackers from one team (meaning you are really counting on a score) against your keeper.

It's been preying on my mind all week. I actually am thinking of bench-boosting Dawson & Evans into contention, just in case Mahrez & Vardy don't bring in the points on the pitch.

Hey Reedy. I can't see this logic working with doubles. GWM's logic (below) works with single players, but if you really think it's worth using two attacking spots for players from the same team, you must not think there is much chance for the GK/Def. I think in that situation it's either/or, or at least you don't double.

        1. Reedy

It just saves me from guessing wrong. It also brings in two other players with a chance of returns, on a rare week in which I have a fully fit squad and pretty much good fixtures across the board.

It might be better saving it for a DGW but I'm unsure about that.

I mean, I'm playing my Leicester attackers as it stands but only because there's only so much damage my Brom duo can do, if it goes the other way. If Leicester come out on top the attackers could get a hatful of points each. But I'm finding it impossible to call - and I don't relish the idea of benching two cleansheets.

I definitely get the dilemma, but I would not do bench boost in this situation. If there is a chance of an either/or result, then you lose the benefit of the "perfect" bench boost. Whenever you do play it, it might fail, but what you hope for is everyone scores. You are going into is basically knowing that won't happen.

            1. Reedy

Yes, exactly - I agree. But that's something I've decided about the chip itself - I think it's almost certain to 'fail' (in that you'll always have a few players let you down whenever you play it). So you might as well use it to solve a particular problem, IMO.

Thing I realised is I've never had a 'perfect' gameweek. Not one fullhouse of good points from 11 players, in 10 seasons.

So how am I going to get 15 players to score well at the same time? 🙂

This is very good, but I don't think it entirely deals with the 2 attackers versus one GK situation. If it's worth playing both attackers, then it probably isn't worth playing the keeper.

    I don't normally take hits - maybe 2 or 3 a year but.....

    Ruddy Butland
    Cédric Monreal Ward Bellerín Naughton
    Payet Mahrez Sánchez Mané Surman
    Costa Vardy Pellè
    3.7m WC available

    Thinking Costa+Surman -> Lukaku+KDB -4

    worth it for a -4?

Surely vvd/sagna will out score Dawson the next two weeks and alderwield next week, in which case would a hit not be worth it?

    Chaps.

If you had one from Bony, Kane. Lukaku or Giroud where would you go?

    My concerns are

Bony - May not start and I think Pellegrini might want to give the young lad a run out
Kane - Would never had considered him had he not scored three last week
Lukaku - Amazing run but let me down so many time before
Giroud - Bit hit and miss

Other forward are Pelle and Vardy.

    Help

I've narrowed it down to Kane and lukaku

Kane seems to be getting back to last years form
      Lukaku has good fixtures

Not crazy given the saving and Ozil has more assists since he joined FPL than any other player. Not as explosive as Sanchez but still a good choice.

Right I know this is huge merry go round but who is really the better option?

    a) Lukaku

    b) Bony

I am put off by Bony because he could be at risk of not starting and he is only short term.

If you're happy to get Aguero as soon as he's fit then go with Bony.

If you'd rather be able to wait and see how Aguero is looking or have some breathing space to raise funds for him then go with Lukaku.

      Simples.

    Myhill / McCarthy
Bellerin, van Dijk, Janmaat / Nyom, Muniesa
de Bruyne, Sanchez, Payet, Mane / Mahrez
    Pelle, Vardy, Ighalo

    0 FT, 4.9 ITB

    A) No further transfers
    B) Ighalo ---> Bony/Lukaku -4
    C) Muniesa ---> Moreno -4 (long term move, I want him next week)

Depends on where he's played. If he's moved back up from then he'll be fine.

Of course "fine" doesn't mean he's one of the three best options for your team either though.

Deciding who to bench between Mahrez and Ighalo is hard; Ighalo has delivered more points than Mahrez lately and West Ham has conceded goals in each one of the last few games but at the same time Ighalo has only scored in one home game so far.

Leicester plays against one of the best defenses in the league, granted, but WBA has conceded 5 goals against two offensive teams like Everton and Palace and Leicester has scored in every single game. I can see it being a 2-1 game and against such a good defense Vardy is definitely going to need Mahrez.
