The Digest – Gameweek 11

Arouna Kone is the star of the show in Everton’s 6-2 thrashing of Sunderland. Liverpool heap more misery on Jose Mourinho at the Bridge, whilst United’s struggles in the final third continue ahead of some fine upcoming fixtures.

The Player

It’s fair to say that Arouna Kone stole under the radar as Fantasy managers assessed Everton’s chief protagonists ahead of their excellent run of fixtures.

Having failed to start a league match since Gameweek 6, the Ivorian was transferred out by over 17,000 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers for Sunday’s clash against Sunderland and resultantly dropped to just 4.8 in price.

Kone’s hat-trick and assist helped him earn a 20-point haul against Sam Allardyce’s side and surely places him in the driving seat for yet another start as the Toffees roll up to West Ham this weekend.

Encouragingly for Roberto Martinez, Kone has racked up five goals and three assists in just 586 minutes – that fares very well when compared with Romelu Lukaku’s six goals and four assists over 984 minutes. Indeed, despite being stationed on the flank, only four forwards with 500+ minutes under their belts have scored at a quicker pace than Kone’s 117.2 minutes per goal this term.

As evidenced by a goal and assist against Watford in Gameweek 1, Kone’s threat may prove a potent weapon when the Toffees look to go on the offensive. Let’s not forget that Everton played all of last season’s top eight teams in the first ten fixtures and it may be that Martinez has overlooked the Ivorian due to a run of tougher match-ups.

As the schedule begins to ease, Lukaku’s security of pitch time as the lone striker is not in question and the Belgian will understandably earn the bulk of Fantasy interest. With Martinez looking to take advantage of the upcoming fixtures, though, there’s a chance that Kone may yet throw his hat into the ring as a viable cheap forward if his manager rewards him for Sunday’s showing with a run of starts.

The Team

A 3-1 win over Chelsea earned Liverpool their first three points under Jurgen Klopp as the German’s “Gegenpressing” philosophy starts to make an impact.

The weekend victory maintained the Reds’ unbeaten start since Klopp was appointed – all the more impressive given that they have also faced Spurs and Southampton prior to their head-to-head with Jose Mourinho’s men.

Crucially for Fantasy managers, the Merseysiders look to have some in-form options right across the board. Philippe Coutinho’s double indicates he’s rediscovered the swagger that brought him a Player of the Year nomination last time out, whilst Roberto Firmino has now started each of the last two in all competitions and could be pivotal to their progress under the new manager.

Christian Benteke needed less than half an hour off the bench to bully the Chelsea backline into submission, grabbing a goal and assist to add to his strike against the Saints in the previous Gameweek. In two appearances under Klopp, he’s already bettered his output under Brendan Rodgers.

At the back, the Reds will be bolstered by the fact they’ve conceded just twice, given those aforementioned fixtures. Again, Klopp’s tactics will be key to how we assess the Liverpool rearguard and his penchant for attacking full-backs has seen Alberto Moreno fire six attempts in three fixtures with the German at the helm – more than any other defender.

With his side still eight points off the summit, Klopp may have laughed of title talk and played down expectations but there’s no doubt that the upcoming fixtures will turn many a Fantasy managers’ head. Over the next six Gameweeks, home encounters with Palace, Swansea and West Brom, allied with trips to Newcastle and Watford, look set to give the Merseysiders the perfect platform to continue their ascent up the table.

The Talking Point

It turns out that United’s 3-0 win over Everton in Gameweek 9 was something of a false dawn.

Having seen his side lose by a similar scoreline at Arsenal in the previous Gameweek, Louis van Gaal’s decision to move Anthony Martial wide left and shift Wayne Rooney up front again had looked inspired as the Red Devils ran riot at Goodison.

Since then, though, United have failed to score in the subsequent two league outings, drawing blanks against City and Palace, with Martial’s initial impact quickly waning due to his manager’s tactical switch. The young Frenchman, having looked so promising as a Fantasy option, has now earned more transfers out than any other player this Gameweek – that’s despite the fact that United are poised for some excellent upcoming fixtures.

The Martial exodus says everything about the Old Trafford outfit’s decline as a source of attacking options. Over the last four Gameweeks, the Red Devils sit bottom for attempts on goal, with 30 – put into perspective, the likes of Leicester, Man City, West Ham, Arsenal and Spurs have registered more than double that tally over the same period.

Perhaps, as the Dutchman suggests, it’s no more than a temporary blip but the underlying numbers do not bode well for those still holding United attackers. Nonetheless, those superb fixtures cannot be ignored and it may well be that the Red Devils’ defence – with four clean sheets in the last five – will be the main beneficiaries of the Dutchman’s philosophy over the coming weeks.

While we all don't like critism, it must be irritating for the likes of JT to get it from Robbie Savage. I admire the confidence of a very poor footballer like Savage in embracing a career as a pundit, good on him. BBC must have cut their budget when you compare with the pundits at Sky.

Surprised people are still asking about Jones and Rojo as options in the United defence.

De Gea and Smalling. That's it. If you can't get them then you're as well off investing in a different defence.

Except they're both far, far more likely to be rotated than either DDG or Smalling. Also, Jones is constantly a fitness risk.

Seems to be first choice atm, so probably. Problem is that LVG is more than capable of replacing him with either Blind or Young at any time, as a starter or in the middle of the game. With a manager as erratic as LVG I'd really want a more secure player in the long run.

The new interface of UCL fantasy is not user friendly unlike last season.

Just checking: can I change my captain choice?

For example, Griezmann(c) is playing today, but after his match ends, should I decide to change to Neymar(c), is it possible?

In light of JT calling out Robbie Savage who are the top 10 worst pundits on TV?

Robbie Savage is definitely no. 1. No debate there.

Who else winds you up when they talk rubbish?

I would put Jamie Redknapp in that bracket too. Useless.

A number of the Irish guys. Heard Dunphy on the radio the other night, supposedly doing "intensive research on the Bundesliga" yet he thought Klopp was in charge of transfers at Dortmund (he wasn't) and that Bayern have no World Class players in the team barring Lewandowski. Also said all the young players in the game worldwide are rubbish.

Just a word of caution for all the people considering Rojo...

He is a rotation risk, in so many respects...

    1. If Valencia returns, Valencia(RB), Darmian (LB) is an option.
    2. If Jones returns, Blind(LB) is possible.
    3. Even with both of them out, you can't rule out Young (LB) - not that LVG has not played him there.

Not saying he will not play, just think he is nowhere as nailed on as people think.

I don't think he is much of a risk to be honest - he has established himself as first choice left back in Shaw's absence and has actually been playing well.

I mean every player has competition is they start playing poorly but....

"Established as first choice" only means so much under LVG as he will drop a player in good form if he thinks someone else will suit a particular game more. He literally said as much regarding Herrera too. Also, Blind and Young are players he is particularly happy to bring in and out of the team in different roles, exactly the sort of players who will get deployed for specific tasks.

There is no evidence of 1 or 3 (as you say yourself).

As far as 1 is concerned there is actually evidence to the contrary. Rojo has played every minute of the last 3 games, and Darmian not even close.

Rojo has been available to start 4 pl games and has started 4 games. He came off once due to an injury.

We can say he is much more nailed than Darmian, and less injury prone than Jones.

Smelling is unquestionably the best DEF (excluding GK) but he costs substantially more

While what you're saying is true, there are other people that can play there, I'm not sure there's a massive need to be worried.

Rojo didn't play at first because he was at Copa America and took a while to get to fitness. Once he did he was only benched for one game before being put into the starting 11. He then got injured again and since returning has played the full 90 minutes 3 times. Him playing LB is of course helped by Shaw's injury.

I think he's quite nailed for now. He was a favourite last year and played nearly every game when he wasn't injured.

        LvG after the City game:

That's not really a question I want to answer 🙂 But I think he might just be.

I remember reading a quote last year from LvG that Rojo was one of only a few players guaranteed to be in his first 11 - I can't find it now.

He played a lot last year and is straight back in the team this year following injury. He can play in place of Shaw and is also left footed so fits the LCB spot well.

Smalling and DDG are the only nailed defenders but I think Rojo comes close.

Haha, no responsibility attached - I'll probably bring one in this week but I never allocate blame for my poor decisions! I was all set for it to be Jones but his absence this weekend has made me revisit things.

I'm going to be ridiculed for this (and rightly so!) but I've only just caught up on MOTD from the weekend and had no idea that Kolarov had taken and missed a penalty! My Saturday's are often spent out and about and I regularly rely upon BBC goal alerts to find out what's happening in the football - they don't include missed penalties though!

I bet Jonty will be gleeful on the Scoutcast at having got rid of him!

The first was against West Brom when it seemed every man and his dog had a West Brom defender except me. The game finished 0-0. A Baines goal would have meant a minimum 10 point swing over those managers, almost certainly more with bonus changes. But I'm not bitter.

I can't do much worse than I have with captain -- besides the Aguero haul I have 64 points in 10 game weeks. Awful.

Butland (che) and Ruddy (SWA) owner

Do Ruddy (I'm playing Ayew v him)to DDG for free this week or save 2fts for the injury(international) break?

Tough call -- the FT over the break could be worth more than the 4 points you would hope to gain with that move.

Who's your favourite pundit? I like Didi Haman, good insight and very unbiased.

Some of them on the radio like the Newstalk guys aren't bad. I tend to find those who played at a high level really struggle to remain unbiased.
