Suspensions

The Suspension Tightrope – Gameweek 13

Southampton’s Graziano Pelle is the most high profile of this week’s Suspension Tightrope protagonists after collecting a fifth yellow card of the campaign in yesterday’s home loss to Stoke.

The Italian will now miss next weekend’s trip to the Etihad and, although he will return in time for a plum home clash against Villa in Gameweek 15, it’s fair to say the exodus is picking up pace – over 120,000 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers have already parted company as we scramble to bring in the likes of Romelu Lukaku and Sergio Aguero.

Pelle earned a late caution for kicking the ball away as his barren run continued – he’s scored just once in the last five Gameweeks. Post-match, Ronaldo Koeman was unhappy over the Italian’s lack of self-restraint:

“It’s all about the frustration of the player. He was not playing well, he was not scoring and the team was not winning, but you have to control yourself always. That’s difficult, we know. But, okay, if it doesn’t happen today maybe it happens next week. It’s always a question if you are one booking from a suspension. It’s always when, when, when it happens. Okay, normally you have to control yourself. He knows. We know. We have to accept it and we will play another [number] nine next week.”

Pelle is one of six players to succumb to a one-match Tightrope ban so far. Liverpool will be devoid of Lucas’ services for their home encounter against Swansea next weekend. Swansea’s Jonjo Shelvey will also miss that Anfield encounter – handed the role in “the hole” at home to Bournemouth, the former Red bagged himself a goal and assist before earning his fifth yellow of the season.

Over at the Hawthorns, Tony Pulis has decisions to make at left-back after Chris Brunt picked up his fifth booking in the Baggies’ home win over Arsenal – the Northern Ireland international now misses next weekend’s trip to West Ham. Mark Noble will also be unavailable for that one after earning his fifth yellow in today’s loss at White Hart Lane, whilst Dele Alli will be absent as Spurs host Chelsea next weekend.

There are now 17 players on this week’s Tightrope, with Gameweek 13 handing us five new entries. Bournemouth playmaker Matt Ritchie, Leicester centre-half Robert Huth, Norwich’s Seb Bassong and Liverpool pair Emre Can and Nathaniel Clyne are the men in question.

Palace duo Wilfried Zaha and Yohan Cabaye, along with Sunderland’s Billy Jones, could yet topple of this week’s Tightrope – all three go into tomorrow’s night’s match at Slehurst Park on four yellows apiece.

In terms of newly-available players, Tottenham will welcome back Erik Lamela for next week’s trip to Stamford Bridge after the Argentine served a one-match ban at home to West Ham earlier today. West Brom will have Gareth McAuley available for their clash with the Hammers after the Irishman missed yesterday’s win over Arsenal.

Slaven Bilic’s side, meanwhile, will be without the services of James Collins once again – the Welshman serves the last of a three-match ban against the Baggies.

    Leicester final table position guesstimates?

I'd say they might actually make the top 4, although more likely around 7/8.

Reminds me a little of Soton 2 seasons ago,
      Top 10 would be wonderful.
If they lost either Vardy or Mahrez I'd fear for them.

My mate got 20-1 at the start of the season for them to be top of the Premier League (exc. the top 6). I think he's looking good for it right now.

Long way to go though. I reckon 7/8 should be realistic though.

    2 things about City,
1- I think they were jaded and complacent V Liverpool
    2- They miss Silva.

Fernandinho was a bigger miss than Silva imo. He's the true lynchpin in that midfield. Yaya and Fernando are useless against a high press.

Fantasy football is a silly game and anyone who succeeds at it is essentially just demonstrating how much of a social misfit they are.

Coincidentally I'm a little peeved at not captaining Lukaku and not owning any of Kane/Aguero/Jones/Ozil/Barkley/Ayew...

    Anyone fancy a mid-season snigger? http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2015/08/08/season-predictions-201516-the-view-from-the-scouts/

    Some highlights from my predictions:
    Chelsea to win the league
Leicester as this year's underachievers and to be relegated
Aston Villa as this year's overachievers
Eden Hazard as bonus point darling
    Oscar as best differential
Siem de Jong as top budget midfielder (admittedly that was a hail mary even at the time)

We all make mistakes 🙂 And TBH no one expected such great form from Leicester and a disaster from Chelsea. We would be laughing if someone ever predicted what we are seeing currently.

Though picking Villa as overachievers was stretching it slightly 🙂

I think even if he was fully fit he'd struggle to perform in the current environment - we've been disorganised for years which is never conducive to allowing individuals to shine.

true, and even then not sure there is a place for him in the team. He can only really play as an attacking mid (Wijnaldum's spot) or as a striker (Mitrovic's spot). He's poor everywhere else.

Not sure how nailed Simpson is, but Leicester's fixtures are turning the moment they start to keep it tight. Would rather go for Wolly, and if you could stretch 0.1m more I'll go for Ward.

The gk move looks solid though most people aren't sure whether Darlow would be No.1 once he returns. Who is your other gk?

    The forwards dilemma...

So am I right in saying we're all trying to choose 3 strikers out of:

    (A)
    Kun (13.1) -- (7 G // 1 A // 3 Bps) -- 50 pts in 609 mins
    (SOU, sto, SWA, ars)

    (B)
    Kane (9.5) -- (8 G // 0 A // 12 Bps) -- 67 pts in 1127 mins
    (CHE, wba, NEW, sou)

    (C)
    Lukaku (8.8) -- (9 G // 4 A // 14 Bps) -- 86 pts in 1131 mins
    (bou, CPL, nor, LEI)

    (D)
    Vardy (7.4) -- (13 G // 1 A // 15 Bps) -- 93 pts in 1147 mins
    (MNU, swa, CHE, eve)

    (E)
    Ighalo (5.6) -- (7 G // 3 A // 13 Bps) -- 74 pts in 1051 mins
    (avl, NOR, sun, LIV)

**Ignoring Giroud, Costa and Benteke for now

The key thing to get right is the right balance between price and explosiveness, it's extremely difficult to determine whether spending the extra mill or two will return the increased number of points..

There doesn't seem to be too much between them from the stats above, Kun looks explosive with nearly as many goals in half the minutes, but has arguably the toughest fixtures coming up.

Kane has 2 great fixtures and 2 tough ones, same goes for Vardy..

Lukaku and Ighalo seem to have the easiest short term fixtures, but are they consistent/explosive enough to keep pace with the others mentioned?

Which 3 would you go for if you were to start from scratch today?

He is a great fpl pick. Selfish as hell. He had 3 opportunities to pass to Son who was in acres of space and he decided each time, to try and go past 3-4 players. What an ass.

Lukaku, Aguero and Kane are the ones to own. I've got Kun, Vardy and Lukaku. Wont drop Vardy until he stops scoring. I have him at 6, and he is such good value for me to drop

            This!

Personally, I can resist Kane and keep Vardy over the next 2 fixtures. Because to bring Kane in, I'd have to lose Sanchez which I am not prepared to do since I can feel he's on the verge of his explosive phase (could have got 2 assists in the WBrom game and now Arsenal want a result in which I expect Sanchez to be involved)

This is top of my agenda this week.

I currently have Ighalo / Vardy and Kane. I don't know wether to hold or sell Ighalo and if so for Lukaku or Aguero.

If I go Lukaku I could have either Ozil or Coutinho.
      If I go Aguero (Which I don't think I will) I'd have a 5th non playing mid.

I rather fancy Lukaku and one of the above to outscore just Aguero.

But then do I just hold Ighalo and pocket the free transfer. But will Igo out score or match Lukaku over the next three?

KUN, because he is good and his team scores a lot.
LUKAKER, because he is improving on his form and he also has the fixtures.

Vardy and Ighalo is a close race. Actually, Deeney could join them to. However, because of fixtures, and I look more than three games ahead, I would go with BEN TRUCKER! Liverpool has a lot of nice fixtures, and he is going to be a regular from next gameweek an onwards. Sturridge, Coutinho, Firmino, Lallana, Ibe will have to fight for the three attacking midfielder seats.

I avoid Kane because he is an overrated twat, a swinger. I can never trust him to get the points, seeing that he needs help from other players or the other team to get it in. Nah, better to avoid.

That is the problem with being a Liverpool fan, you have an bias without even realising it. Liverpool's fixtures are actually fairly tricky in the medium term (apart from the next few)

Why on earth would you think I'm a Liverpool fan?

I'm not saying that Liverpool will win their games. However, their fixtures are stuffed with teams that have defensive problems, and Liverpool will most prob score relatively more goals than in the rest of the season under Klopp. Hence, Benteke is a good choice for the 5-8 next games. When January comes I have a brand new wildcard, and I do not have to think further ahead.

Or was that just a sore comment from a Spurs fan who did not fancy my sexually laden description of Hodor?

Sorry I thought you must have been a liverpool fan as their fixtures look fairly tricky to me: WBA (pulis def tough as arsenal just found out), wat (one of the best def this season), LEI (been getting some cs of late), sun (big sam is making them really tough to crack), wha (having a great season and have already done a number on some big teams where they can sit back and counter attack), ARS, MUTD.

The above is a list of their fixt after the next two and I can't see many gimmes in there?

            1. Stat Sloth

I am a Liverpool fan. It was a joke, as I thought my nick gave me away.

WBA should be defensively good. Although, ARS has their own problems with injuries and fatigue, and WBA has had three games without a CS now, so I would not judge that book by one game.

WAT are about the same as WBA. Relatively good defense, however, only 2 out of 8 previous games gave CS.

LEI, 2 CS the whole season, and one of them against poor, poor NEW.

SUN, Big Sam has given them one CS. He also gave EVE six goals. SUN defense has so many flaws that Sammy wont be getting those regular CS until after Jan shopping. However, I do agree on your point that Big Sam normally is a CS magnet.

WHU are even more swinging than Kane. Unpredictable. Could shut out, as at Anfield, or suddenly let three goals go between Adrian's legs. Adrian haven't had a CS since GW1. They are also a Jan opponent, so are ARS and MUN, but WHU is early Jan so I joined you on that one.

Also, you forgot to mention SWA and NEW the next two games, which actually makes Ben Trucker a potential cap option.

My point stands. Fan or not. Ben Trucker will outscore Ighalo/Vardy and hopefully Kane the rest of Nov and all of Dec.

Thanks for replying with reasoning and it may well come to pass that tekkers scores higher than those you mention but my point is that being a fan of an epl club that you are inherently biased when looking at the fixtures and being a Liverpool fan this bias is even worse as you probably still see your team as a "big" team.

I don't mind how you view your team but in my experience Liverpool fans tend to overestimate their teams ability due to their perceived strength which is based on historical achievements. For this reason I think that you view certain fixtures as being easier for your team than they would be for another mid table team say a Stoke or Swansea.

As an aside I think this perceived overestimation of Liverpool's abilities is one of the main reasons behind BR's sacking and it will probably be the reason for Klopps sacking in summer 2017. Nothing short of top 4 will appease the Liverpool fans but without the budget this is an unrealistic goal to have year in year out. It can ofc happen the odd season as it has for Everton, Spurs, Liverpool in recent years but it takes one of the big four to mess up royally for this to happen imo.

                  You are very welcome.

I do not view LFC as a big team. I do, however, hope that they can become one. Maybe I am one of those critical fans who look at a game and find more potential problems than things to cheer for. So this bias you talk about might be real for many fans of clubs. I do not think the bias in me is that strong, though. I already mentioned that I do not think LFC will win the games, I just think that the games will produce goal opportunities for the LFC striker. Which is why my previous comment with "reason" stands. However, I do not own LFC players, and I only had Gomez this season, as I think they performance is too irregular for my FPL tactics.

As a reply, I could also adress, due to your assessment of LFC as "another mid table team" and "Nothing short of top 4 will appease the Liverpool fans", perhaps it is you who have a bias. A negative bias towards Liverpool and Liverpool fans? Which might lead you to view them to negatively also in FPL terms?

tbf the fact you don't have Liverpool players in your team would lead me to believe that your bias is not as strong as most Liverpool fans I know (I don't think any of them would admit that Liverpool are no longer a "big" club).

I can assure you I don't have any anti Liverpool bias as I am equally critical of entitled man u and Arsenal fans. I may have a slight bias towards entitled fans who feel they have a devine right to be at the top but it is nothing against the actual clubs themselves. I actually used to support Liverpool as a kid growing up in Ireland until circa 1991 or so but luckily for fpl reasons I don't really support any team any more.

For the record a strong Liverpool would be good for the epl so I would like to see them get back to challenging at the top on a regular basis and hopefully they can do it under Klopp.

I just thought I'd add, WBA were actually very lucky in the Arsenal game. Arsenal made loads of good chances but Arsenalled it quite typically. They missed a penalty and could've had another one if Clattenburg had noticed Giroud being hauled down. A team with a better conversion rate would've scored 2-3 more.

for the next 3 (at least) i'm happy with Lukaku, Vardy, Igahlo.

Then, Igahlo is probably going to need to go, so in will come either Kane or Aguero. De Bruyne & Igahlo to Eriksen and Aguero looks very tempting, but a few weeks away so plenty of time to change my mind!

You have almost 5m to find in addition to those transfers?

Vardy & Kane then one of Lukaku and Agüero, probably Lukaku.

Ighalo doesn't have fantastic underlying stats and while Agüero did have earlier in the season he was way off the pace on the weekend.

I think I might have a slightly different opinion on this post. I think this post shows that having any 3 of these mentioned names in good enough for the short term until some of them start outscoring the others by a lot/ lose form drastically. So why not spend time trying to shore up your defense? I think Stoke, United and Kompany are great defensive picks at the moment, not to mention Watford have decent games coming up, and Liverpool as well. Also Coq's injury should really reassess our thinking about Arsenal's backline. I think getting your defense right over the next few weeks vs. figuring out which forward marginally more than the other would be a better differential.

Still a great pick. Less so without Coutinho. Waiting for news

More so without Coutinho. He becomes more nailed as the main creative outlet.

Dont agree. His best chances came yesterday because of Coutinho. We dont have much creativity outside of them two. Still going to do well because he is awesome.

      I've gone for Firmino.

I was looking for a player to knee-jerk in and let me down just like Deulofeu.

I'm playing Mahrez & Vardy this week & I also have Smalling. Would you play Ake/Richards over Smalling since Leicester probably will score.

My defence = Smalling, Bellerin, Kolorov, Richards, Ake.

    Thanks.

Just a repost from last night for a new crowd...and anybody afraid of hits...

My son's mini league from his school...He's sat on top but look at the GW history of the lad in second place.

    He started in GW2....1x (-16) 2 x (-12) and 3x (-4).....OR182k.....10 green arrows since GW2..

    It's pretty good stuff.
