This Much We Know – Gameweek 14

We cast an eye over some of the main topics from the weekend’s ten fixtures this Monday evening. Mesut Ozil and Kevin De Bruyne’s stars are on the rise, Sunderland’s defence and Bournemouth’s midfield continue to impress, whilst our options amongst Chelsea’s regulars are narrowing by the week.

All roads lead to Ozil….
The Alexis Sanchez hamstring scare has now accelerated Mesut Ozil’s bandwagon, with the German’s strike at Norwich meaning he’s blanked just once in the last ten Gameweeks. Sanchez’ weekend withdrawal, allied with a single assist in five, has sparked a major exodus – indeed, Ozil is now owned by more FPL managers than the Chilean for the first time this term. Despite his recent drought, any length of absence for Sanchez will likely seriously hamper Arsenal’s cutting edge – up next, it’s Sunderland and Big Sam’s parked bus at the Emirates as the Gunners look to bounce back from another miserable November.

Injury worries to others could boost De Bruyne’s bandwagon….
Sacrificed by almost 100,000 FPL managers due to Sergio Aguero’s recent return from injury, the Belgian picked a fine time to deliver his highest points haul of the season at home to Southampton. For many, De Bruyne had looked the obvious player to replace as a means to freeing up funds to draft in his team-mate but with Aguero forced off with a heel problem on Saturday, plenty will be prepared to hold onto the summer signing after his weekend goal and two assists. Although Aguero has reassured fans over his fitness earlier today, there’s no question that Manuel Pellegrini will remain cautious with the Argentine’s minutes, and with question marks hovering over Sanchez’ availability elsewhere in the premium midfield bracket, De Bruyne’s ownership could be on the up in light of the weekend’s events.

Some familiar Black Cats are back on the radar…
It’s three wins and a trio of clean sheets in just six matches for Sunderland as Big Sam brings their defence back onto our Fantasy radars. Allardyce has cited shut-outs as key to the Black Cats’ chances of survival and last weekend’s victory over Stoke saw the Wearsiders climb out of the relegation places, in what has been a remarkable turnaround in fortunes. Patrick van Aanholt looks to have re-established himself as a regular, with a weekend strike taking his tally to a goal, an assist and two clean sheets in his last three – a role as left wing-back in a 3-5-2 is clearly benefitting the Dutchman. In goal, Costel Pantilimon, has now earned 32 points since Big Sam’s arrival, compared to 17 points in eight matches beforehand, with the Wearsiders starting to mirror the displays that served up 13 clean sheets in the season gone by.

Deeney’s keeping pace with Ighalo…
Having blanked in each of the first nine Gameweeks, Troy Deeney seemed to be struggling with the step up from the Championship as strike partner Odion Ighalo ran riot. A goal and assist away to Villa means the Watford captain has now scored in four of the last five Gameweeks, though, as he finally finds his top-flight feet, and with Ighalo racking up three strikes and four assists over that period, Quique Sanchez Flores’ men now sit nine points clear of the bottom three. Whilst the 5.8-priced Ighalo has now found his way into 22% of FPL sides, Deeney, at just 5.1 and owned by 2%, is looking a ready-made differential.

We should look to Bournemouth for the cheap fifth midfielder…
The Cherries’ switch to 4-1-4-1 in Gameweek 11 continues to boost their attacking potential – Eddie Howe’s side have fired more attempts (71) than any side over the last four Gameweeks. With Dan Gosling and the out-of-position Joshua King already on our radars after netting in the previous Gameweek, Junior Stanislas was the latest to throw his name in the hat by bagging a brace in Saturday’s 3-3 draw with Everton. With all three midfielders coming in under 5.0 in FPL, Howe’s tactical tinkering has ensured there’s no shortage of cut-price options on offer at Dean Court right now.

Vardy’s looking fixture-proof…
Fourteen matches into the season and only West Ham – back in Gameweek 2 – have managed to prevent Jamie Vardy from picking up Fantasy returns. The home clash against United represented his stiffest test yet, given that the Red Devils have chalked up more clean sheets and conceded fewer goals than any other side, but the Leicester marksman passed yet again, recording an eleventh successive strike to register a new Premier League record. The Foxes still have Chelsea, Everton, Liverpool and City in the next five but judging by Saturday evening, we have to go with form over fixtures for now.

Bolasie could be worth the frustration…
Having blanked at home to Sunderland last Monday evening, Yannick Bolasie served a reminder of his goal-getting ability by netting twice in Palace’s 5-1 thrashing of Newcastle. Handed a central role behind Connor Wickham, Bolasie’s brace means he has already equalled last season’s four-goal haul as he delivered a 15-point return against the Magpies. Whilst there’s no denying his explosive potential, Bolasie’s inconsistency will test our patience – Saturday was only the third time in 13 appearances that he’s picked up the points.

Mourinho is narrowing our options..
One by one, uncertainty over Chelsea’s main Fantasy assets builds. With three plum home clashes on the horizon (BOU, SUN, WAT) Diego Costa could have been a differential but, after being dropped away to Spurs, his show of defiance doesn’t bode well. Can we really justify splashing out 10.9 on Eden Hazard, given he’s scored once all season? It may well be that the sensible option is to opt for Kurt Zouma – the goalless draw at Spurs means the Blues have three successive clean sheets in all competitions and, at 5.4, the youngster has now started 11 of the last 12 league outings.

Sturridge return is another uncertainty….
Similar to Chelsea, Liverpool have the fixtures and improving form in their favour but the situation surrounding Jurgen Klopp’s attack remains cloudy. Daniel Sturridge’s surprise return off the bench saw Christian Benteke replaced with 20 minutes to go at home to Swansea and as the Reds’ boss looks to ease the England international back into the fray, the likes of Roberto Firmino and Adam Lallana’s pitch time could also be in question. Arguably, Philippe Coutinho looks the safest option – providing he recovers from a hamstring problem – but even then, Sturridge’s return could influence Klopp’s formation and the Brazilian’s role in the final third.

I owned Hazard from GW7 to GW13. 5,5,1,2,1,2,3. (And swallowed 4 price drops I think.)

    I owned Coutinho from GW4 to GW8 -2, 0, 2, 9.

    I owned KDB from GW9 to GW12 5, 3, 5, 3.

I really one of them back now to replace Sanchez. Should I let the above influence my decision?

Considering the opponents this week, KDB would rank 3rd. Should be goals in the other 2 games so it depends on current form and getting over the injury for Coutinho vs fixtures and past glory for Hazard.

Definitely not. The latter two are on fire too. You just had bad luck. Imo if you are feeling punty go hazard. If you need funds elsewhere go Coutinho. Otherwise kdb. All good options. Assuming you have Ozil already

Currently have Lingaard, Simpson and Kolarov on bench this week. Contemplating bench boost given I don't expect to have 15 double game week players at any point and all those three have as good fixtures as one could expect from the bench

Do you think it's worth it?

Also have a non playing keeper.

Bench Boosting when you don't even have 4 on the bench sounds a massive waste.

Haz technically creating more chances on average than he was in this same period last season.

Form is temporary, class is forever. If I want Sanchez back anyways, I'm willing to take a 3-4 GW punt on Hazard with these fixtures on the basis that Mourinho HAS to turn things around and that Eden has looked better recently.

technically as in, 2.8 per game vs 2.3 per game over the opening 14 weeks 😉

which is honestly a good sign considering that Chelsea's opening form last season was brilliant and now is not but should turn soon

very, very likely. would already be if I remembered to do it before price changes yesterday when I lost .1m sell value on Sanchez..now have a buffer drop to think it over but still think I'll run with it..

at the rate Sanchez was dropping pre-injury and is now dropping post, I think I should be able to get him back at 10.9 too by the time I'm done with Hazard or move someone else on back to Alexis

Sanchez will be 11.1m by next gw so reasonable that he would drop another twice.

          I sold at 11.2m.

It's a fixtures based punt and Hazard's number have swung upwards a bit whereas there was no stats before.

People think it's crazy but I really like it and having him in there. Please be up to vs Bournemouth.

Very much so. Previously never saw the purpose of him. This season he looks all round quality. His position works well with two strong midfielders next to him aswell

He's reaching his potential that he had at Fulham, which I think was scuppered by a bad team around him and a lack of confidence. But now the Spurs camp now looks like one of the most settled teams in the league.

not sure he's a top FFS prospect though. Who would you pick him over in his price bracket? Can you really see him getting attacking points consistently enough?

No he's not quite good enough for FFS. £0.8 cheaper and he'd be great though!

    Azpi, alderweireld, monreal, moreno, Morgan
    Sanchez, cabaye, mahrez, mane, coutinho

    Template ramble...

IMO the Sanchez injury just means that all FFS users' (and those in the know) midfield becomes ever more template:
4 or 5 of these (depending on Kun) is what seems the norm:
Ozil, KDB, Mahrez, Coutinho, Mane, Ayew, Hazard, Eriksen, Barkley

The forward template is also well established - 3 out of the 5 below:
Kane, Kun, Lukaku, Vardy & Ighalo

It's only my second season here and the first where I actually gave a sh1t so forgive me if I'm wrong but this season seems a little different from others in this regard no?

Taking into account the above perhaps the real differentials can be found in Def this year?

It was arguably even more template a few weeks ago when half the world had Vardy Pelle Ighalo up front.

I agree, and there's nothing wrong with template... essentially I see it as a collective view on who the best players are so definitely worth sticking close to since the majority of users on here have a wealth of experience...

I was just trying to say that although there is a template Def this year, there seem to be a lot more options than 'pick 4/5 out of these 8/9' and wondered whether this was always the way it was?

Pretty much always been that way. Template front 7 and a bit of variety at the back.

Apart from when everyone had Carragher or Vidic or Kompany or Terry.

Thanks Roys... just genuinely interested and spotting patterns in these things for the first time this year.
I guess the main point is that although FFS users/members might have very similar teams, casuals or other ML rivals will not. Hence the reason the the FFS league is Top of the Pops right now.
Thanks to all regular poster btw

I only started playing it seriously this year so I'm not used to a RVP/Suarez style player who scores almost every game and you can have near complete confidence in captaining. Vardy kinda fits this mould but he's so cheap for his scoring rate and no Aguero or Haz or Rooney or Costa means more money to go around = more options.

        This.

Having what becomes the template is where the points are at.

As Sinik points out people are reactive and purchase once they see the form / points scored.

There's been a lot talk about Sanchez replacement, and many stressed Coutinho as an option, considering good fixtures Liverpool have.

How about Liverpool strikers? Will Sturridge be nailed once fully fit, and would you gamble with him in that case, considering his great goal scoring record? Would you ignore Benteke considering that Kane, Vardy and Lukaku are in form, and Aguero is coming back, or he can compete with them for place in the team?

Yes but Sanchez ignites Arsenal's play. He often assists the assister, Özil won't be as good without him but yes, he could assist Giroud as always.

Arsenal will still get a few free kicks within 30 yards of goal - even without Sanchez.

Did you watch Norwich game? They looked lost after Sanchez went off.

There's a bit more to FPL points than who touched it last/2nd last....

The amount of set piece goals Arsenal have scored due to Ozil have been crazy..

I have a massive benching headache for the week ahead. So many strong fixtures. Please don't slate me for my lack of Vardy/Mahrez ownership - it's painful enough!

Who should I keep on the bench out of:

Eriksen (WBA A), Willian (BOU H), KdB (STK A), Ozil (SUN H), Coutinho (NEW A).
Ighalo (NOR H), Lukaku (CRY H), Giroud (SUN H).

    Thanks in advance guys!
