Suspensions

The Suspension Tightrope – Gameweek 16

Our Tightrope walkers were on their best behaviour over the weekend, with no new suspensions to report on so far in Gameweek 16. Indeed, the last 19 Premier League matches have failed to see anyone topple off, after last week also passed without incident.

There are now 23 players sitting just a single booking short of a one-match ban. Saturday and Sunday’s fixtures produced just two new entries – Sunderland’s Jack Rodwell was cautioned for a tackle on Watford midfielder Ben Watson during the Black Cats’ 1-0 home loss yesterday. Newcastle’s match-winner Ayoze Perez also accrued his fourth booking of the season after a late challenge on Jan Vertonghen in this afternoon’s 2-1 victory at the Lane.

Steve McClaren’s men now supply the Tightrope with three players – more than any other side – as Perez joins Vurnon Anita and Cheick Tiote on the naughty step.

There’s still time for a couple of protagonists to topple, though. Leicester’s Robert Huth and Chelsea’s Diego Costa are the men in question ahead of tomorrow evening’s match at the King Power, though the latter’s chances of taking part remain in question, bearing in mind that he’s failed to start the previous two matches.

With three more Gameweeks still to navigate until the limit is increased from five cautions to ten on New Year’s Day, there are, in theory, as many as 144 players still at risk of the Tightrope. West Brom are the club most affected, as they have ten players with at least two yellows to their name. Liverpool and United, meanwhile, have just four players in a similar situation.

Cautions for Tom Carroll and Danny Rose means that Tottenham remain at the summit for yellow cards accrued – Mauricio Pochettino’s men have been booked a total of 37 times in top-flight fixtures. West Brom (34), Liverpool (33), Newcastle (32) and Sunderland (31) are the next culpable, though in contrast, Arsenal have been the best behaved, with just 16 league bookings.

In terms of overall yellows, Stoke’s Erik Pieters and Newcastle’s Jack Colback now joined Norwich midfielder Alex Tettey at the summit with seven yellows apiece. Colback has now extended his record as the most booked player since the start of last season – he leads second-placed Lee Cattermole by 19 cautions to 17. That trio could yet fall foul of the ten card-limit in the current calendar year, then, should they be booked in their trio of remaining 2015 fixtures.

Elsewhere, Jurgen Klopp has defended the tackle by Craig Gardner that led to Dejan Lovren being stretchered off with a knee problem at Anfield:

“He played the ball, a millisecond before he hit Dejan. It was like the whole game: on the edge of everything. But he played the ball.”

Tony Pulis, meanwhile, went on the offensive and claimed the hosts were far more culpable:

“The two worst challenges in the game are James Milner’s challenge on Gardner and Martin Skrtel’s challenge on Salomon Rondon. Gardner has played the ball. Skrtel has gone right over the ball.”

Man United’s Bastian Schweinsteiger is the only player currently unavailable due to suspension. The midfielder was retrospectively slapped with a three-match ban in midweek following an elbowing incident involving West Ham’s Winston Reid in the Gameweek 15 goalless draw at Old Trafford. Having sat out yesterday’s loss to Bournemouth, Schweinsteiger will also miss the upcoming league encounters with Norwich and Stoke.

    My five defenders are;
    VVD - Kolarov - Moreno - Dawson - Ogbonna

Madness to use one of my FT's on Schmeichel to 4.0(or less, other keeper Butland). And saving the other transfer?

Sometimes 2 FTs are a curse rather than a blessing.

I did Dier to Toby this week as I had 2 FTs and didn't have any other moves planned. Of course, Dier scores a goal and Toby returns a 1 pointer.

Also, stick with Coutinho or punt on Ramsey?

Well I didn't have Lukaku and also got in Giroud.

I reckon the goals will dry out now for Ighalo and Vardy now that the fixtures are turning. Might of course be wrong but that's how I see it.

Have Kane too. Great player like him a lot. Remember having him for GW1. Got him again after his hat-trick. Don't want to part with him but his inconsistency is killing me. Should atleast assist for goals if not score them. Might do Kane to Kun myself

Saw comments yesterday about a Kane rest so I guess him. Lukaku and Vardy should be mainly okay I think.

Bellerin, Sagna (if Zabaleta is around?)

I think Mahrez is probably okay as is Ozil for the most part. KDB just had his rest. Moreno should be okay.

This is surely the right time to shore up defence before Xmas. looking at the same alternatives myself.

Not sure if I'm sold on Crystal Palace for clean sheets - lots of away matches coming up.

WBA fixtures much better, reckon they'll manage a couple of cleanies. They're recent slump is against the in-form teams mostly. Dawson vs. Evans is a tricky one though, just feeling one can't trust Evans. Did well while I had him earlier this season though.

Wollscheid surely a decent choice, even if fixtures a bit mixed.

Zouma - wait and see how Chelsea looks tonight. If they keep Leiecester out, I think I would jump on that train. Upcoming fixtures really good for clean sheets if they get their act together. Maybe even take a punt on Ivan, depending on how he looks.

Frimino to Wij just because vila are that bad, assuming Smalling fit that defence ok, not much point changing coz clean sheets seem a lotterty at the moment apart from stoke

    1FT, 1.1 ITB

    Butland / Myhill

    Kolarov / Monreal / Dawson / Richards / Delaney

    KDB / Ozil / Mahrez / Arnautovic / Anya

    Aguero / Lukaku / Vardy

So, this weeks transfer was't all that bad (VvD 2 -> Moreno 1)
Bugger with a benched Dawson goal.

So I have Gosling and 7m ITB.

    Ozil Mahrez KdB Coutinho Gosling
    Kane Vardy Lukaku

    A - Save this
B - Spend the Aguero fund for Wijnaldum/Ramsay (upgrading Gosling)

I have the exact same front 8. Gosling saves you the benching headache though. I'd save

Yeah, I sold Iggy as I kept benching his points, and got in Aguero. Gosling is there to keep the bench easy.

Been thinking recently that I NEED to get Aguero in for Sunderland (h) on Boxing Day. But even though I can do it in two simple moves with no hits required, it feels like a risk I'm not prepared to take. It wrecks the whole balance of my team.

Anyone else shying away from Kun this Christmas? Think KDB/Silva is the way to go.

As a Newcastle fan I've studiously avoided looking at the league table for quite a while. Afforded myself a peek this morning and can't believe where Watford are! I knew Ighalo and their defence had been gathering an irritating amount of fantasy points but I somehow assumed they were still low mid-table!

I don't dare allow myself to consider any scenario where we don't royally balls up the next fixtures so I'll be steering clear but I applaud your bravery. I don't think we've been playing well so much as the last couple of opponents have slipped up. Wijnaldum is an obvious talent though.

If anyone's gonna take those games by the scruff of the neck, he'll probably have something to do with it.. Mitrovic is a decent option too, especially with Kane looking suspect as hell..

I think Villa + Everton's defences are bad enough for me to punt 🙂

Go for it then. He's a cracking player and on paper we should score in both games, I've just learnt from 30 years of watching Newcastle not to rely on anything being straightforward!

Well this season has not been my best. Too many transfers definitely. However, I look around and I see very good players with seasoned records still struggling too. This season is a freak of nature so far. Can't wait for 2016 to come around. I think we will see "normality" return for the second half of the season..........I hope........ 😉

Due to the 'big' teams weakening this is by far the greatest season in the PL imo. Anyone can beat anyone, the title race will be as exciting as the relegation battle 🙂 Horrible season for FPL but as a product the PL doesnt have the quality but it sure has drama

Agreed and I would want to be watching Spanish, German or Italian football instead. It's boring watching the same old, same old week in week out. At least it is interesting albeit annoying unpredictable for FPL.
