Suspensions

The Suspension Tightrope – Gameweek 17

Just one player fell off the Suspension Tightrope over the weekend’s nine fixtures. Sunderland’s Jack Rodwell was the guilty party, earning a fifth booking of the season for a foul on Pedro early in the second half of the Black Cats’ defeat at Chelsea.

Rodwell’s caution comes in just his fourth league start and with just 647 minutes under his belt this term, he has incurred the referee’s wrath every 130 minutes – in comparison, Jack Colback, who sits on seven yellows, has been booked every 157 minutes.

The midfielder will therefore miss a nostalgic trip back to the Etihad on Boxing Day before being back in contention in time for the Gameweek 19 home encounter with Liverpool.

Elsewhere, we saw a quartet of new arrivals to the Tightrope as the disciplinary halls were decked to excess in true festive fashion. Gary O’Neil and Jose Fonte were the early additions from Saturday’s 3pm kick offs – along with their respective team-mates Seb Bassong, Oriol Romeu and James Ward-Prowse, they will need to avoid another booking over the next two rounds of fixtures.

In yesterday’s late match, Aston Villa’s Ashley Westwood and goal scorer Jordan Ayew both collected a fourth caution of the campaign. This means there are now 15 clubs represented by at least one player who is a booking short of a single-match ban – they have to be on their best behaviour until New Year’s Day, when the threshold is extended to ten yellows.

Ahead of tomorrow evening’s clash between Arsenal and City, then, there are now 74 players still at risk of a one-match ban – 25 sit on the Tightrope, 41 require cards in both their remaining matches and a further eight from tomorrow’s Emirates encounter could yet succumb to suspension by earning three consecutive cautions. Essentially, then, every club still has players in danger.

In terms of further suspensions, West Brom duo James McClean and Salomon Rondon will sit out the next three Gameweeks after both were dismissed for violent conduct during Saturday’s 2-1 home loss to Bournemouth. The pair will therefore be missing the remainder of the festive programme against teams in the bottom half of the table, with a visit to Swansea on Boxing Day preceding back-to-back home clashes against Newcastle and Stoke.

Post-match, Tony Pulis was highly critical of both players, putting McClean’s challenge down to retaliation, before slamming Rondon’s altercation with the Cherries’ Dan Gosling:

“It was a reckless challenge from McClean. The disappointing thing for me was that 30 seconds before that, Smith went over the top of the ball and caught McClean on the ankle. McClean has not let that go and has gone after him with the next challenge, unfortunately, and you can’t condone that. If Mike Dean had given a free-kick for the first challenge then the sending-off would not have happened…It (Rondon’s behaviour) was crazy, absolutely stupid. Rondon can’t do things like that. We’ve never had any inkling that he’s had anything like that in him since he has joined us. That’s the first time we’ve seen him react like that.

Only one player returns from suspension this week, with Leicester’s Robert Huth available for selection again after he served a one-match ban in the 3-2 win at Everton. Bastian Schweinsteiger sits out the last of a three-match suspension this time out as United make their way to Stoke.

Those with a front 3 of Lukaku, Kane and Vardy, what are your thoughts on Ighalo and Aguero? Kane is the only one I would consider shifting current, especially after Poch saying he could be rested over Christmas.

Sure its a risky fixture but aguero is not fully fit, has unknown match form, could go down again at any time and is unlikely to play full minutes over the xmas period anyway, so not worth taking out another good striker for the sake of one possible plum fixture.

I can't see him being rested now.

United and Liverpool, the only real contenders of the 4th spot with Spurs, have been really bad in the last few weeks. I am sure Poch will see it as an opportunity, coupled with some amazing fixtures coming up and would love to wrap up all 3 points wherever possible.

I read that last week and tbh, I was planning to get rid if he blanked again. But now that he is amongst the goals again and Spurs are in form, I don't see it happening. Could be wrong and we might see him on the bench next week someday, but then again, I think it's worth keeping for this week at least.

    Bottomed out:
My Fwd's and mids doing well, would like to get in Ramsey, but no one obvious to take out, so going to hold another GW (unless he hauls tonight) and use 2FT's to improve defence that keeps letting me down.

Butland & Hennessy - no problems there
Nyom (brilliant), Bellerin AND Moreno (too many 2's and 1's), Francis (3rd bench), Smalling (ok)

Moreno defo has to go, in 17GW's he's scored more than 2 on only 3 occasions.
Francis, I should upgrade for the Xmas shuffle.

    DDG (Hennessey)

    Kol, Dier, Monreal (Zouma, Moreno)

    KDB, Ozil, Ramsey, Barkley, Mahrez

I'd bring in Ramsey or Barkley, Watson isn't a strong enough 1st sub for the festive period IMO.

Breaking the locked and loaded template?

Just done a little stock check of those in front of me in 1 ML.

    Here is the front three:

    Ighalo / Giroud / Lukaku
    Ighalo / Vardy / Lukaku
    Ighalo / Vardy / Lukaku
    Ighalo / Kane / Lukaku
    Ighalo / Vardy / Lukaku
    Martial / Vardy / Lukaku
    Ighalo / Vardy / Lukaku

Ighalo, Vardy and Lukaku feature heavily. Four teams have that exact front three! The only differentials above are Kane, Giroud and Martial.

The midfield is pretty much same problem: Mahrez / KDB / Ozil / Barkley … with the odd differential thrown in but no-one featuring heavily to break that template.

Defence is a little more mixed, but again Butland, Alders, Kolarov and Smalling all feature heavily.

This is a conundrum! And it also makes for a pretty dull GW when every team is the same.

My front three: Kane, Lukaku and Vardy

I’d like to bring Ighalo in. But that’s jumping from one template to another. In order to break the template, Kane should stay and one of either Lukaku or Vardy should go. Looking at stats it should probably be Vardy.

And so it continues into the midfield. I don’t need to go into it, you get the picture.

Just interested to know if anyone else is having a similar conundrum for our front three?

      Keep Kane!

      Sell Vardy for Ighalo.

Then Kane to Kun after Norwich

Bingo. I'm certainly considering 1 and 2. Vardy's stats have certainly dropped, but could they pick up again. Pool next looks like a good fixture to me!

I'm thinking Vardy as stats have dropped off. Selling Lukaku could be the way to go too. So heavily owned that will make leaps providing who you re[lace him with scores better that is!

There are a lot of options thus year making it harder. I agree Vardy to Ighalo and Lukaku to Aguero and keeping Kane. Allows me to have Hazard and Sanchez too but for Ozil and KdB. Maybe a bit too punty

      I have same
though I have giroud to your kane, having looked at it I don't see the worth in trying to predict a new forward going on a run. best to hold the same and if one does pop up then see if some of your rivals don't swap and maybe drop points to you.
I reckon at the moment there is better chance of finding some mid diffs

Agree with the mid diffs. But what to do with no Ighalo. I commented last week prior to this weekend that if he was playing for a top four team with a price tag of 9m+ he'd be in every team and we would be speculating that he / watford has tough fixtures.

I don't think you need to do it this week, kane is just as likely to score well.
with so many games in short period I am always hesitant about messing about too much, as it can so easily backfire with rotation

Good point. I certainly hadn't intended to sell Kane. He is the only differential I have in my front three. But possible Vardy. But maybe a save transfer situ maybe best.

Good post. I think it's only worth breaking the template if you're bringing in someone who's going to strengthen your team. Whilst Vardy, Ighalo and Lukaku (or Kane) are bringing the points you're not going to help yourself by shipping them. That being said, I think I'll be brining in Kun before too long.

Thanks. It's certainly a tricky one isn't it. I'd need to see Kun lasting a full 90 before I consider dropping anyone of those four for him. At the mo they're offering to much consistency to afford to drop either of them.

B: Save the transfer so I can get in Hazard/Sanchez if it seems like a good idea in a week or two.

The only time I've seen more red arrows was at an RAF aerobatic display...

    Here's my lot:

    Toby / Bellerin / Dawson / Moreno / Ward
    KDB / Ozil / Wijnaldum / Mahrez / Westwood
    Lukaku / Kane / Vardy

    Any obvious transfers?

    Wij > Ramsey

Keep Vardy. Too consistent to let go. Kane has NOR H so I don't know. Maybe if Aguero has a blinder tonight you could justify it.

I never really fancied Wijnaldum so I can't guide you there. It'd be biased. The prospect of constantly playing him doesn't appeal to me, when other guys will be having Ramsey/Barkley/Coutinho in that spot.

That's the problem, you can't own everyone and there aren't any arguments to drop any of my current front 3. I took a punt on Wij's fixtures, but would feel more comfortable with Ramsey in that spot. Looking for a differential to gain ground is probably going to backfire.

Wijn is not a differential. 21% ownership in top 10k.

Ramsey better player, better team and only 6% ownership in top 10k.

    Upgrade Browning or save FT?

Have this GK combo since GW8 so am sticking unless there is a threat of a snowed-out Stoke game. Front 8 is well set.

The thing with saving is that I think I'll have 11 starters for GW18 and then I can evaluate who'll play GW19 and transfer in accordingly. But then again, it could turn out I don't have 11 starters in GW18, it's a risk.

    Team is:

    Butland / Schwarzer
    Alderweireld / Moreno / Kolarov / Dawson / Browning4.0
Ozil / Ramsey / De Bruyne / Mahrez / Bolasie
    Ighalo / Vardy / Lukaku

Ok. Here's the big question for me, which strikers are going to score the most points over the next 5 Gameweeks?

    A) Aguero (SUN,lei,wat,EVE,CPL)
    B) Ighalo (che,TOT,MCI,sot,swa)
    C) Kane (NOR,wat,eve,LEI,SUN)
    D) Lukaku (new,STO,TOT,mci,che)
    E) Vardy (liv,MCI,BOU,tot,avl)

Rank them in order, highest to lowest. I'll go first: C,A,D,E,B.
