The ScoutCast – Episode 179 – Resolutions

New Year, new aspirations, same old voices.

The first ScoutCast of 2016 is brimming with determined talk of banishing old habits which, in all honesty, will likely evaporate in the weeks to come. That’s particularly true of my no-Aguero policy, which feels even more flimsy after taking in the musings of Jonty and Andy in this episode.

Man City’s hitman and faltering away form comes under the microscope via another batch of community questions, along with an assessment of Dele Alli, Kane without Dembele and the allure of the French fancy that is Dimitri Payet.

We rinse through that little lot, before looking ahead to the floodlit excitement that awaits us in Gameweek 21.

This episode was first aired live on our YouTube channel on Wednesday evening.

You can view the ScoutCast in full via the larger player below (with a minor edit due to a technical hitch mid-cast).

Those who prefer the distilled audio version can treat their ears via this link or the smaller player below.

Don’t forget to subscribe to our YouTube channel for updates on new episodes.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

        Hey IM!

Wanted to ask how many days are sufficient to Visit/Cover Ireland both North and South?

Hmm... Not sure if I would divide them by North and South, there's more of a distinction between East and West.

Dublin and Belfast contain the "cosmopolitan, more modern" areas of Ireland as they're the two capitals, both on the East coast about 2 hours drive from each other.

One day for Belfast, at least 2 for Dublin City.

But my favourite parts of Ireland are over the West.
The counties of Clare, Kerry, Galway, Mayo.. that's where you'll see the real Ireland.

Lots of fields, small old pubs with small old men, fantastic music, great scenery, it's beautiful along the Wild Atlantic Way. I could spend up to a month down the west 😛

I might be biased and any northerners that see this may not agree.. But I'd argue that there's lots more to see down South rather than up North in general..
Belfast vs County Donegal is a bit like Dublin vs County Clare, but I'd prefer the latter.

              Belfast + Giant's Causeway maybe?

But yeah Galway is the place to come! 🙂

That's pretty much it up north.. Donegal has some amazing sights and cliff walks, it's battered up there and with any kind of good weather it's stunning, but yeah Galway / Clare / Kerry would be my recommendations.

Especially the Cliffs of Moher, they're unreal.

IM might be better placed to answer as I haven't travelled as much as I should have done (and never been to the North) but I would give yourself at least 2 weeks if you can to do it comfortably.

A week might be okay but you'll be rushing to get from place to place.

Two weeks should be good - you'll want more than 1 day in certain places - Dublin, Galway etc.

    Butland
    Smalling Ward Bertrand
    Ozil Mahrez Ramsey KDB Payet
    Kane Lukaku*
    Schmeichel Vardy* Bellerín Dawson
    1ft, 0,1m itb
Lukaku probably fine so just save? Im not sure I wanna lose Vardy, might be a good differential in a few weeks since everyone getting rid...

    Ivanovic vs Azpilicueta?

There is a lot of love for Ivanovic on here. Is that just the Hiddink factor or is there more to it? Seems that foregoing a solid nailed bap player like Azpilicueta could be a fool's errand when it is for a player whom this season at least has blown hot and cold to say the least.

This would happen to be my analysis. I'm not a stats guy (so I am unaware if the underlying information betrays me), but surely the fact that much of the praise for Ivanovic requires a significant and continued turnaround in Chelsea's attacking form, let alone Ivanovic's personal contributions, when compared Azpilicueta's continued and consistent abilities.

A dullard decision if ever one existed, but as the Jonty etc have been saying, it feels like a dullard's season.

Agreed totally. Azpi over Ivan right now easily. Ivan has the more chances due to his heading ability but Azpi is no slouch and is constantly overlapping the LW to get into scoring positions. On one or two occasions, he has been running onto through passes being ahead of everyone else of his teammates.

Is the love for Ivanovic more likely to be due to the age old dullard vs maverick conversation then?

Ivanovic is a sexy selection who offers gains at both ends of the field (on his day...), whilst Azpilicueta is merely a solid fullback who attracts bonus points and the occasional (very occasional) assist.

I'll just chuck a few thoughts into the pot re these DGW's and folk contemplating their WC's.

Whilst there's no doubt that IF a DGW works out well it can give you a boost it's seldom on the scale we convince ourselves it will be.

Reading this forum any potential WC's may be put off by the seemingly overwhelming advice to WC ahead of the DGW in order to get a healthy boost in rank...and you might do....but....bear in mind that this forum is not the norm for that tactic and that the game at large will simply go with the four or five DGW picks that simply fall into their lap through the regular playing of the game, and that your rank will rise or fall (mainly) within the fortunes of those players.

As above...It's easy to convince ourselves that by playing our WC for a DGW we will end up with a nice healthy eight players or so for those two matches whilst everybody else has none...obviously this is not the case. It will simply mean you will have two or three players above the norm....not quite such a jamboree. In short just because you have eight DGW players it doesn't mean everybody else has none.

One caveat is that most on here will have bench boost to go along with the WC there. So that is one more advantage allowing us higher returns.

        1. Dr Dream
          • 11 Years
          8 years, 3 months ago

That would depend entirely upon how brave you are at ditching the top picks in the game and who the teams are.

Having been stung with Kompany Silva and Aguero a couple of years ago (all rested for the second game of a DGW) I'm more than a little wary of chucking too ,any eggs in the DGW basket.

All I'm saying is the difference across the game between how many good DGW picks we have through a WC and how many DGW picks that regular play yields is not quite as large as we think.

          1. Ziro Becomes One
            • 9 Years

Understand your point about expectations being too high maybe.

But the BB allows us to have the most of DGWers than others.

One instance would be keeping the Leic/WB/Watford/Palace defenders on the bench for example. In such a scenario where they can nab 2-3 CS among them, our more number of DGWers due to the WC just before gives us that much more probability of cashing in.

Or you could argue the reverse way by saying if we use the WC now or in a few weeks, it could all still fall apart (Doolittle can testify here). Doing it with the DGWs gives us that extra chance with extra matches.

Oh aye BB adds another dimension for sure.

In years pat the general gain has been a bit underwhelming at times. I'll make the figures up but it usually has GWavg of about 75 pts whilst we post scores of about 90 pts...something of that order anyway. It's never the enormous boost we hope for.

BB and triple captain may help though.

Good tactic. The blank that goes hand in hand with a DGW can become a really big problem depending upon when it happens. I've sat several times after a DGW wondering "why the hell did I get all this rubbish"...

        3. Gizzachance
          • 9 Years

thats my thoughts to, problem is when you have the blanks{depends on how quick blank games come around} then you have to many players not having game, defeats the object of having them for dgw as maybe not enough time to replace them, as the dr said having to change your team on w/c to accomodate them, and transferring out players you want,as they only have single gw, thus disrupts your team, then is harder to get it back into shape
my plan is to get the dgw players in using transfers{bit of guesswork/luck as to who it will be if it gw25} , most will already have some dgw players in team anyway, then triple captain or b boost depending on amount of dgw games,,then w/c to get my team back in shape again ! good luck to everyone

Well my thinking is to save my WC and BB chops for end of the season...if i'm not wrong there is a DGW every year aroung gameweeks 36-37. Thats when i wanna load up on DGW players and also on players from teams that are fighting for CL or to stay up in the league. Remember last years Laicester run or Sunderland DGW when i think they got 2 CS.

i dont think it's worth keeping the wildcard that late. you're essentially limiting its use to 2-3 GWs which is nothing compared to the weeks and weeks of pain and surgery you could be suffering leading up to it. maybe you'll be lucky and not have any crisis, but in my experience there's always a few of those crisis situations which can drag you down for a long time if not addressed

Good points. My mind is very short term and remembering how well people did last year when they saved their initial wildcard for the double game week, it actually worked out really well.

I used mine back in GW3 last year though and still finished top 10k so perhaps overall it worked out better to not save for the double.

That is half my thinking now - the quicker you use it the longer you have to make use from it - potentially anyway.

      1. Dr Dream
        • 11 Years
        8 years, 3 months ago

Yea, whether we use it for a DGW or not, who we pick, whether it works out well, BB or Triple captain...all that stuff...isn't really my point.

The real point of the post is that through regular play we can easily end up with five or even six DGW players by doing very little whilst playing the WC might mean you have eight (probably get more but would you want them, or even worse who would you lose).

So realistically playing you WC for a DGW probably means two or three players more than just playing the normal game...Ir's not that big a differnce really.

I used my WC for last seasons DGW and picked up on a few Hull players who ended up being the stars of the GW.

The majority who didn't WC were Hull-less.

In other words, lets say Norwich have a DGW. Most would ignore there assets, but those on a WC are unlikely too. Obviously it's different if it were just big teams who had DGW's.

      1. Dr Dream
        • 11 Years
        8 years, 3 months ago

Yep. You did well. Hull and Leicester were gold.

However. The previous year we all sold or Lallanas and Snodgrasses and we were left bitterly disappointed as the SGWers actually did better than the ones we got in.

Nonetheless even with Lei and Hull picks, if that's how it works out again, the regular play doesn't exclude them, or some of them, being bought, or already part of existing teams.

A little planning will still see teams with DGWers and not solely the property of those using a WC. So the same thing applies really...two or three DGW picks more than regular play.

Very good point. Also most of the legendary DGW hauls have actually just been one big game that is very well timed. Yaya and Suarez both got DGW hat tricks; BAE and Walker both scored in one and got a cleanie in the other. Once everyone captained Sess and he got his only goal in the last minute of the second game.

The only real exception I can think of is VDV, which was even better because a lot of people didn't have him, or anyone who actually went with a Hull defender last year. But mostly DGWs just mean everyone has the same player when he gets a big haul.

Same as above though really. Even when we have done well by putting in somebody like Yaya with our WC doesn't mean that SGW players didn't...or didn't already have him.

A good point. I'll be holding my WC for use in DGWs but won't be afraid to use it if pressing matters come up beforehand. DGWs can often blind us to other opportunities in the weeks running up to them and you can lose good points in those weeks as well as if the DGW fails.

A while back a community member (possible Jarvish?) did a great summary of the DGW permutations, with the different teams and weeks that are likely to come up. Anyone have a link to that handy? I've trawled for it but can't find it.

      Cheers!

      don't entirely agree
basing it on my regular ML players who are a mixture of WC holders and WC users then the norm is for holders to have 8-10 DGW players on good DGW week and users to have 6-7 at best without hits. so the difference is usually 3-4 players, add those who have kept BB you then could have up to 8 extra players playing, injuries and rest aside.

      1. Anathallo
        • 14 Years
        8 years, 3 months ago

Yeah, I see your point but I'd say maybe we overestimate that advantage. Basically 3-4 players is not all that many (especially if say 2/3 of them are small team players with a difficult away fixture as part of their DGW, which is quite likely) and potentially picking the right SGW players may be more advantageous. I agree that there is a possible advantage to be had, and I'm going to gamble on that, but the advantage is not so great that it is worth ruining the weeks running up to the DGW. IMO.

Good points. But something to consider is that this season has been very strange, a lot of FFSers have poor ranks and even some veterans are really struggling. This means a lot of casuals are doing well, and I remember a recent stat about the Top 10K that only 50% of them have even played FPL before.

So my point is with DGW's, it gives us FFSers and advantage over the casuals who are less experienced or have never played the game before. For example, they may not even realise that a team has two games in the same gameweek and will not have time to adjust their team.

So essentially, DGW's could be a great differential for us experienced FPL managers who are used to planning for them against the casuals (that happen to have higher ranks than us) that are not 🙂

Toby worth the price tag though? Walker averages more BAP's and has some attacking threat. I'm looking at bringing in a Spurs defender this week too.

Toby is worth it. Walker doesn't get forward as much as he used to, imo. Toby has huge goal threat from set pieces.

Dier is more of a goal threat.

Toby has gotten a few lucky long ball assists.

Should disagree here. Toby has at least double the goal threat of Dier if we could quantify it. Haven't looked at stats but whenever I watch a Spurs match, Toby looks like scoring in every set-piece situation. Reminds me of Terry in his attacking prime.

After their next two (pretty bad) fixtures, Everton have got a really nice block of 4:

      SWA, NEW, sto, WBA

And the worse one there, (sto), might well end up being a DGW, too. Is anyone else planning to be tripling up for those games? Thinking Lukaku, Barkley and maybe Jagielka here, think it could be a sound strategy.

SWA - Solid defensively and resurging under there new manger.
NEW - Lukaku/Barkley blanked last time they played them
sto - Butland away from home.
        WBA - Pulis

Good enough reasons for me not to get any Everton in 😉

This would be the double up of choice imo.
Not sure I'd fancy their defence for a triple up, especially when other teams also have reasonable fixtures through that period: Liverpool, Arsenal, City, Tottenham to name a few.
Might just go for Lukaku thinking about it...

I suppose it depends upon how your team is constructed and your requirements for differentials. DGW would be tempting, but he could easily blank in both given current team and individual form, whilst a more in-form player in an in-form defence may be a better choice.

I'm not sure it's as simple as people like to make it. Liverpool after the next 2 fixtures go on a very good run of games and whilst defenders are out at the moment, they are likely to return in a couple of weeks (I believe) and Klopp has to solidify that defence at some point...

I personally have a very similar defence (kind of) and I am keeping moreno (benching him the next 2) and getting rid of Kolarov (finally biting the bullet, kept him in all season...i think...). He is just too inconsistent within a frail and frustrating defence, I will be getting Kompany in when he returns and has a game or two.

I would chance it with Dawson. Moreno for all his attacking potential has next to no chance of CS against Arsenal due to the depleted defence, imo. Dawson at least still has the attacking threat along with the bus that Pulis will come up with against Chelsea.
