Fiffsa 5-a-side World Cup Qualifying Week 6

Gameweek 5 of the FIFFSA 5-a-side tournament saw our first confirmed qualifications and exits. However, for the vast majority of the teams, there is everything still left to play for.

We would like to remind everyone of the deadline for submitting in your substitutes. This week, it will be 23:00 GMT on Monday, Jan 11th. We are still receiving some emails after this time and those teams had their 6th player benched as stated in the article. Please email as early as possible as we have limited time to organise the team spreadsheets and update the score centre during Monday night/Tuesday.

Any teamsheets sent to us after 2300 GMT will not be accepted and your 6th player will be benched. No Exceptions!

Gameweek 5 Review

The average team score for this week was 340 points  and as with previous rounds there were some close ties. In particular, the ties between USA v Cayman Islands and Iran v Sri Lanka were decided by a single point.

The biggest win of the week was for Bosnia and Herzegovina, which defeated Russia by a massive 71 points in a match that ended 366 to 295.

With five games having being played, Tahiti remain the sole side with a 100% record and are secure for qualification. Thirteen other sides have won four of their first five matches and will expect to qualify although some still remain at risk depending on certain scenarios. In contrast, UAE and Ivory Coast, still maintain a 100% record of losing. Qualification may no longer be possible but I’m sure they will be looking to avoid a whitewash over the next two games.

The luckiest team award goes to France, who scraped a win with only 324 points (16 points below average).

The unluckiest team award goes to the Cayman Islands, who lost their tie against the USA despite scoring 357 points (17 points above average). This would have been enough to win all but 10 ties this week.

The worst benching decision goes to Iceland who benched Gilli Gold who scored 88 its, although it didn’t matter with Iceland edging out the Republic of Ireland.

The presser award for Gameweek 5 goes to Il Consiglieri Wasabi 196 of San Marino for getting the tournament into the christmas spirit. Keep the pressers up! There are so many excellent contributors which have yet to win awards. If you haven’t submitted one before why not submit one this week?

Gameweek 6 Preview

There are lots of exciting ties coming up this week and some teams should be able to secure their spots in the first round proper of the tournament.

A top of the table clash in AFC group B finds New Caledonia taking on Singapore. Both sides are level on 12 points at the top of the table along with Australia and will be crucial in deciding who tops this group. The winner will guarantee qualification while the loser may need a result in the final game depending on other results.

In the CAF group, four teams are currently on 12 points. Two of these, Zambia and Djibouti go head to head, again, the loser of the tie will then need a win in the final game to secure qualification.

A more detailed summary of this can be found on the player history tab which includes the rank history of every player in the tournament at our team sheets and tables spreadsheet.

Further Information

A quick reminder of the format. Each gameweek, teams will pick a team of five players to go head to head with their opposite nation. The match will then be decided by the aggregate score of each teams’ gameweek scores after hits have been accounted for. This week’s games can be found here.

Captains are required to submit their team sheets to fiffsa.exec@gmail.com by 2300 (GMT) of Monday, Jan 11th otherwise their sixth player will be automatically benched.

Live scorecards will be up shortly before the kick-off on Tuesday evening at our score centre spreadsheet.

If you have any further queries, feel free to ask below in the comments or email us at: fiffsa.exec@gmail.com

UEFA Group A is surely better? In A, no team is guaranteed to qualify and any team can still progress.

That would be the highest scoring group (congrats for being in a qualifying position in the second highest scoring one) but not necessarily the most interesting to keep track of for this last round of fixtures in terms of what's left to play for!

The total scores for each qualifying group are as follows:

              1. 13,843 - CAF
              2. 13,786 - CONBEMOL
              3. 13,767 - UEFA A
              4. 13,677 - UEFA B
              5. 13,634 - AFC/OFC B
              6. 13,628 - CONCACAF
              7. 13,548 - AFC/OFC B
              8. 13,517 - UEFA C

So in the highest scoring group (CAF) there are no qualifying spots up for grabs, four teams have only pride to play for, the remaining four teams are only playing to determine their seeding.

Whatever way one looks at it, though UEFA C can't be the best group. There is more undecided in UEFA A and it is the lowest scoring group (in terms of FPL points) in the competition!

The top scoring teams in the competition so far going into the final week:

              1. 1,852 - Egypt
              2. 1,835 - Costa Rica
              3. 1,833 - Djibouti
              4. 1,800 - Uruguay
              5. 1,791 - Portugal

We're hoping to have a good week and finish in the top three!

    EPIC [potential] COMEBACK ALERT!!

At the end of gameweek 16, Sri Lanka were staring at the barrel with four defeats in four games. We had no points to show for our efforts and our chances of qualification were next to none. The goal wasn't to qualify anymore, but to put some points on the board. Our heroic captain (none other than myself) rallied the young Lions and kept them motivated. We were playing for our pride (pun intended of course).

We were triumphant against Iran by ONE point in gw 17 thanks to Lord Sagna taking 3 baps. Then we butchered the Aussies and had some Kangaroo curry in gw 21.

0 points after four games. Odds stacked against us. Can we do it?

Boring boring transfer window. Most transfers are just unused players getting loaned, released on free or sold to smaller clubs, and in England PL clubs paying big money for players from lower English divisions. But the only interest in these transfers are the ridiculous sums the clubs pay.

It says it all that the most interesting thing has been Arsenal signing a young Egyptian DM from Switzerland. And that's interesting, because they're making exactly the signing we've waited them to make: a backup DM/CM, who seems decent too.

Folks, all of us FIFFSA guys are a bit caught up with work/short gameweek turnaround and I haven't been able to get in contact with any of them.

Deadline for this week will be the usual 11pm GMT tonight as the gameweek deadline is tomorrow.

In terms of the article, I think we will just run with this one unless one of the others has secretly submitted one but I don't believe so.

Hi guys, this is just a quick rundown of the situation in each group as we go into the final round of qualifiers. For those of you who have already qualified, remember that there will be seeding at the World Cup based on your placing in qualifying so there’s still something to play for on top of bragging rights of winning the group so please still get your teamsheets in!

      CONMEBOL

Uruguay, Peru, Argentina – 12 pts
All 3 are qualified but each has the chance to win the group or they could come as low as 4th

      Colombia – 10 pts
Need a draw or better to qualify as a loss to Bolivia will see Bolivia overtake them on FPL Points For. If Colombia win however they can still top the group if Argentina vs Uruguay is a draw and Peru lose.

Bolivia – 7 pts, 1785 FPL Points For
Need to beat Colombia and not get outscored by Ecuador by 79 points to finish 4th and qualify. If results go catastrophically badly, they could still finish 8th.

Ecuador - 7 pts, 1707 FPL Points For
Need to beat Brazil and outscore Bolivia by 79 points while Bolivia still beat Colombia to qualify. A big loss to Brazil could see them come last

      Chile – 6 pts, Brazil 4pts
Both teams are out but each can still lift themselves off the bottom of the table with good wins.

      CONCACAF

      Costa Rica – 15 pts
Guaranteed top two seeding and not getting outscored by Cuba by 96 points guarantees the group win

      Cuba – 12pts
A point sees them finish second while a loss may see them relying on FPL points scored to qualify. A big win outscoring Costa Rica by 96 points would see them top the group

Cayman Islands, USA, Mexico, Jamaica – 9ts
All realistically need a win to have a shot at qualifying. The Cayman Islands and the USA are in the driving seat on FPL points for.

      Barbados – 6pts
Still have an outside shot of qualifying after losing their first 4 matches! As a minimum they need to win and outscore the USA by 118 points. Bench Boost anyone?

      Canada – 3 pts
Need a win, Barbados to lose, and to outscore Barbados by 65 points to come 7th.

      AFC/OFC A
4 teams already qualified, seedings still to play for.

      Malaysia, Tahiti - 15 pts
Tahiti need to win and outscore Malaysia by 26 to top the group, otherwise a Malaysia win sees them top the group. Both teams are qualified but can finish as low as 4th with losses.

      Indonesia, India – 12pts
Both teams are qualified but have outside shots of topping the group.

      Japan – 6, Bhutan, North Korea – 4, UAE – 3pts
Are all out but can finish as high as 5th.

      AFC/OFC B
3 teams qualified, 5 teams fighting for the last spot.

      New Caledonia - 15, Australia, Singapore - 12 pts
All are qualified and can win the group. New Caledonia top the group with a draw or better.

      Iran – 9 pts
Can finish as high as 2nd or as low as 7th. Sat in the middle of the group a draw guarantees 4th.

NZ, Sri Lanka, Solomon Islands, Thailand – 6pts
Each team still has a chance to qualify with a big win if Iran lose and they outscore the other three here by enough.

      UEFA A
      Nobody safe, nobody out.

      Wales, Norway – 12 pts
Either team can top the group with a win. Wales lead on FPL points for by 6 points as it stands. However neither team is safe with a heavy loss.

Croatia, Montenegro, Northern Ireland, Spain – 9pts
Realistically each team here needs a win to qualify, but even then it could go down to FPL points scored. But If 3 of them lose then one can still qualify on 9 pts.

      Liechtenstein, France – 6pts
Need wins and teams on 9pts to lose to have a chance at qualification. Liechtenstein currently lead the group in points scored so still have a pretty good chance from only 6 points.

      • 10 Years
      8 years, 4 months ago

      UEFA B
      4 teams on 9 points

      Portugal – 15 pts
Need to avoid being outscored by B&H by 74 points to win the group.

      Bosnia & Herzegovina – 12 pts
A draw sees them come second, Could get knocked out if they lose to Finland and get outscored by Germany by 66 points.

Finland, Poland vs Scotland, Germany – 9 pts
Realistically each team here needs a win to qualify, but even then it could go down to FPL points scored. But If 3 of them lose then one can still qualify on 9 pts.

      Greece – 6 pts
Have an outside chance to qualify with a win but would also need to outscore Scotland by 65 as a minimum.

      Russia – 3 pts
Need to beat Portugal and outscore Greece by 77pts to finish 7th

      UEFA C
      Nobody qualified yet. ROI out.

      Italy, Iceland – 12 pts
A head to head draw sees both teams qualified in the top 3. The losers could still be out. A draw in Belgium vs Israel sees both teams qualified regardless of their result.

      Israel – 10 pts
A win should see them through in 2nd. A loss means they could finish anywhere between 4th and 6th.

Belgium, England, Netherlands – 9 pts
Need wins and other results to fall their way to qualify. Each can finish between 2nd and 7th.

      San Marino – 6 pts
A win and 3 losses for Belgium, England and The Netherlands should see them through with a superior FPL Points For.

      Ireland – 4 pts
Need a win and San Marino to lose to finish 7th.

      CAF
      4 teams qualified

      Egypt, Djibouti – 15 pts
Comfortably beating Seychelles and Zambia on FPL Points For, both teams should finish in the top 2. Bettering the other team’s result will see them win the group. If both win, Djibouti need 20 more FPL points to top the group.

Seychelles vs Zambia – 12 pts
Both teams are qualified, Seychelles need a draw or a win to finish 3rd. Zambia need to win to finish 3rd.

Zimbabwe, Tanzania – 6pts, Ivory Coast, South Africa – 3 pts
Each team can finish as high as 5th or as low as 8th depending on results. No team can finish last with a win.

    Scotland, oooh
    [x2]

Oooh! Looks like another Kun banger,
They better hang on, armbands on Sergio-o
Get a little drink on, they gonna flip
    For this Sergio sh!!t,
    You can bank on it...

    Abdennour, manicure, Everton draws
They way we manage and get these scores
Looking at the Scots and searching for goals
Trying to get Giroud back and maybe sell Rose

Spurs do chase - don't think they saw
Leicester behind them and they like: "Oooh"
Huth's like "I know, let's cut to the chase"
"No time to waste, back to 2nd place"

Plus from the pub to the store it's like a mile away,
The Scots so mad, what shall I say
And plus I've got to mention you'll play away
In fact we're the ones singing the song that's playing...
    *hey, come on*

I feel you creepin', I can see you from my shadow,
It seems like you have jumped on Aguero bandwagon
Maybe you're in fourth place but that's no El Dorado
    Your BMW got stolen,
    Good luck and watch that,

    Scotland, oh liquor store
    Scotland, more whiskey? sure
    Scotland, till you get sore
    Scotland, oooh
    [x2]

    Rangers are rollin', PKWrona rollin'
Johnny and van Dijk, both of them rollin',
Debauchowski just woke up, he's also rollin'
Soon Mr. Rabbit all of them rollin'

    Group B...

    Hiddink's ex-girl is free,
    Counter attack like we
Jock I can tell you want this,
    Cause lately...

What in the name of heck is this? On the bright side, the original probably made even less sense, being an akon song

I'm pretty sure it'll read quite well to the tune of that song, and will make more sense than it does on its own, but i'm just anti-Akon. I didn't mean to belittle your effort in writing these alternative lyrics. My gripes are with Akon, not you 😀

Highly unlikely we will qualify but will give it our best shot. Quite unbelievable we have managed to bench our top scorer every gameweek. Who would have thought everyone wants to be on the bench.

      Here's what we're listening to pre-match on our DrDre's........
(to the tune of Heroes..... Bowie RIP)
It's a long shot - but we might still sneak it.

      We, we played Aguero
      And they, they played Payet
And though Italy, only just beat us
We can still qualify, just for one day
We’re San Marinos, just for one day

And they, they can buy Lens
While Klopp, can sort our defenz
'Cause we're fighters, and that is a fact
Yes we're fighters, and that is that

So Italy, won’t pull us under
We can smash England, just for one day
We’re San Marinos, forever and ever
      What'd you say?

We, we wish we’d not left
      Woy-of-the-Wovers, back on our bench
Though Italy, Italy won’t pull us under
We can still triumph, forever and ever
Oh we’re San Marinos, just for one day

      We, we’ll someday play
Our highest scorer, and not shut them away
Though Italy, have made it unlikely
We can still qualify, just for one day
We’re San Marinos, just for one day

We, we can remember (We’ll remember)
Standing on the podium (on the podium)
But Marino, will sneak through on goals (go-al diff’rence)
And we'll drive cars, as though we cannot fail (we cannot fail)
And the shame, will be on our rivals
Oh when we qualify, forever and ever
Then we we’ll be Marinos, just for one day

      We’ll be Marinos
      We’ll be Marinos
      We’ll be Marinos
      Just for one day
      We’ll be Marinos

We're fighting, and nothing will stop us
Oh yeah we're flghting, and you better not say
That we’re not Marinos, just for one day
Oh-oh-oh-ohh, oh-oh-oh-ohh, just for one day

Correct, the team with the most FPL points from the gameweeks that counted for the competition (not including those scored by the benched player each week).

If you played us mid week Scotland would have lost 168 to 142, that's what I'm on about.

We are changed from last week, because we've been unable to contact our 6th member since mid-December and we simply play as if he wasn't there.

AK: [on the radio] Mystery players? Are you still there?

John McCheeseoid: Yeah, we're still here. Unless you wanna just forfeit to us.

AK: Uh, no, I'm afraid not. But, you have me at a loss. You know our team but who are you? Just another bunch of FPL managers who saw too many Match of the Days as a child? Another orphan of a pop culture that thinks their Jack Walker? Ramsey? Anthony Martial?

Diva McClane: Was always kinda partial to Ryan Giggs actually. I really like those bad suit jackets (http://www.whoateallthepies.tv/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/giggs1-e1400510609213-500x454.jpg).

AK: Do you really think you have a chance against us, Mr. Winger?

    Jawain McClane: Yippee-ki-yay!

    ...Later...

Sergeant Al Balders: [over radio] Hey, Seychelles? Seychelles you still with us?

Blue McClion: Yeah. But all things being equal, we'd rather be in first place. Chalk up two more Zambians.

Sergeant Al Balders: Well, the boys back home will be glad to hear that. You know we got a pool going on you.

Bsloe McBadger: What kind of odds are we getting?

Sergeant Al Balders: You don't wanna know.

John McCheeseoid: Put us down for twenty, we're good for it.

Diva McClane: Hey pal, you got flat paws?

Sergeant Al Balders: What the hell you talking about, dog?

Jawain McClane: Something had to get you off the team.

Sergeant Al Balders: What's the matter? You don't think running an FPL tennis tournament is a noble effort for a Seychellian?

    Blue McClion: No...

Sergeant Al Balders: I had an accident.

Bsloe McBadger: The way you play, I can see why. What'd you do? Run over your captain's armband with the car?

Sergeant Al Balders: I bought a Gunner. Then I bought another and another. They looked real enough, some even scored points, but they weren't Ozil. You know when you're a rookie they can teach you everything about being an FPL manager, except how to live with a mistake. Anyway, I just couldn't bring myself to buy Ozil.

John McCheeseoid: ...Sorry man - that's why you're benched.
